I am beyond thrilled to welcome you all as we celebrate our 35th Season in historic Lenox, MA. As a founding member of Shakespeare & Company, it has been a very nostalgic past few months for me. With preparations for the season taking hold, I found myself reflecting on the early days of the Company and how time has molded it into the vibrant, dynamic, and revolutionary institution it is today.

When our merry band first came to the Berkshires, there was a convention in theatre that we all sought to change. Thirty-five years later, the influence of our founders has shaped the very fabric of American theatre, and Shakespeare & Company was—and continues to be—at the roots of that rebellion. I am so pleased to celebrate the legacy of Tina Packer and to welcome back many of those founding members, including Kristin Linklater, B.H. Barry and Susan Dibble (representing the work of the late John Broome), as we honor their careers and contributions.

To continue the festivities, I am elated to be working with a dear friend and mentor, Academy Award-winning actress Olympia Dukakis, whom I will direct in The Tempest. Founders’ Theatre will also feature founding member Dennis Krausnick in the title role of King Lear, a time warp from the Split Knuckle Theatre Company called Endurance, and the New England premiere of Terry Teachout’s one-man play about Louis Armstrong, Satchmo at the Waldorf, starring John Douglas Thompson. But that’s not all. Down the hill in our Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre we’ll be offering more daring and provocative new work, including Mark Roberts’ profound and dark comedy Parasite Drag, the very funny Tale of the Allergist’s Wife, and the late Norman Plotkin’s brilliant one-woman show, Cassandra Speaks.

On the Rose Footprint Theatre, we’ll revisit the work of Molière by staging Tartuffe, his hilarious commentary on hypocrisy. We also have a thrilling host of new programming, including the weekly Studio Series of staged readings, a special literary series Author! Author!, and some enthralling lectures from our founding members who will share the talents they began to refine at Shakespeare & Company.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t thank Managing Director Nicholas J. Puma Jr., our Board Chairman Richard A. Mescon, and our stellar Boards of Directors and Overseers for helping Shakespeare & Company weather the doldrums of a tough economy. Because of their tireless work, our 35th Season will truly be a season for celebration.
