FLAGLER Adult & Community Education | Summer 2012

ADULT & COMMUNITY EDUCATION / FLAGLER TECHNICAL INSTITUTE

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends!Since its inception, over 25 year ago, Adult & Community Education has been continually working to provide a safe, fun, and educational camp environment to Flagler County children during the summer months.

Our RAD Camp for 6th-8th graders and a multi-themed camp for children in grades Kindergarten– 5th grade provides security for parents and excitement for children all summer long, and the generous support of individuals and organizations like you help make it all happen!

Last year over 1,000 children registered and attended the summer camp program. We would like to offer you several opportunities to advertise or to help a child participate in the summer camp experience.

For as little as $300 your name can appear on 500 t-shirts given to each camper free of charge (as seen on the front page of this magazine). As part of the registration in the program, children are provided these colorful tees to be worn on field trips as an added safety measure and throughout the year, which many children do. To show our gratitude, all contributions will be listed in our Fall Schedule newspaper which is mailed to over 50,000 households in Flagler County in August, posted on our website, and sent out as an e-newsletter.

Additionally, we have a tremendous need for scholarships for children. For a generous donation of $85.00 for a Kindergarten - 5th grade camper or $90 for a 6th- 8th grade camper, you will provide one week of camp to a child who would not otherwise have this opportunity. This fee includes all costs associated with our camp program, including:• Swimming• Arts and crafts supplies• Exciting field trips, and more!• A food program provides children with a free breakfast and lunchAnd this is not the end of our vision. In the coming years we plan to continue to offer these educational camps, keeping children safe and happy all summer long, with the belief that thoughtful support from donors like you will continue. To those who have contributed in the past, thank you again for the selfless interest that you have shown in providing a happy summer experience for children. To those who choose to donate for the first time, please know how much your gift will be appreciated!

To learn more, please call 386-446-7612, or mail your donation to Adult and Community Education, 1 Corporate Drive, Palm Coast, FL 32137.

Sincerely,

Virginia Giaramita

Distance Learning OptionsSometimes our lives seem just too busy to fit one more thing in. But, if you need to obtain your GED® diploma, improve basic academic skills, or increase your English language skills, these improvements to your life are just too important to set aside. Now, the availability of Adult Education has become even more convenient. Imagine having access to learning 24 hours a day/7 days a week/52 weeks a year! Great for stay-at-home moms, employees with long and/or non-traditional hours, and others who may prefer learning in an on-line environment. If you have ac-cess to an Internet-connected computer and an e-mail address, you could be on your way to online learning! While students will complete coursework on-line, they must first register in-person at Flagler Technical Institute, and take an assessment test to evaluate their current academic or language skill level.

> Adult LearningStudents in the ESOL program are taught the funda-mentals of English—reading and writing—along with the communication skills necessary to carry on day-to-day activities. Many of these students leave skilled occupations behind along with various edu-cational degrees. They are thrust into a new environ-ment completely foreign to their own. Now, they must learn a new language and assimilate into a new culture. Here are a few examples of the progress achieved in the ESOL classes.

Within a few weeks, under the teaching of Eugene Zaitseff, Mrs. Cavallo Dorejan was able to find a full-time, well-paying job in a local medical center. As soon as she enrolled in the advanced ESOL class, she immersed herself into the materials taught. Her in-satiable desire to learn and motivation to improve her English language skills were the reasons for her quick success. Without industry, diligence and per-severance—the American values—Dorejan could not have achieved this success so quickly.

Our newest United States’ citizens are also students of Mr. Zaitseff. Luz Kelly (Columbia), Erika Baldwin (Hungary), Villarino Belen (Venezuela) and Edith Plaza (Chile) all passed the citizen’s test this month. They had studied the material in class and felt that they were well prepared—they were able to answer all the questions correctly.

A holiday recipe book is completed every year by Mrs. Eleanor Milberg’s class.

Fluency—the spontaneity to communicate in Eng-lish in a variety of everyday life situations. Evidence of this statement is seen in the Adult Basic Education ESOL class. This class is open to ESOL students who have graduated from the ESOL program. Grace and Marie were helped with their grammar and passed their GED tests. Mira is going to be interviewed by the Wall Street Journal regarding the skills she ac-quired in using English in a natural way.

A class, led by Mrs. Vicki Stanton, has gone on many field trips. A field trip opens opportunities to illus-trate actual interpretations of the many new words learned. Students are able to have a hands-on learn-ing experience. The areas covered may be of natural, cultural or educational encounters.

Each of the ESOL classes is unique. Our students are eager to learn and eager to succeed. Some students have very little English communication skills—oth-ers need to refine those skills. In any case, their needs are met. Their teachers welcome each class with the same enthusiasm to teach as the students have to learn.

WRITING

Creative WritingThis class has introduced many new students to a most exciting form of creative self-expression that has allowed them to discover their voice—their own personal style, their unique rhythm and flow of ideas—in an atmosphere that encourages freedom of expression, experimentation, and the joy of writ-ing.    If you love to write, need a muse to inspire you, or want to explore writing for the first time, this is the class for you.  This class will nurture your style, help sharpen your skills, and inspire your creative self to grow no matter what style or genre you choose to develop or explore.

How To Write A Book in 30 Days

NEW To begin, we will discuss what defines a book and a little background on print and ebook

formats. The class will learn how to finalize a topic, idea, working title and subtitle for their book. Then the class will learn how to line out chapters (non fic-tion) or scenes (fiction) for their book as the begin-ning of an outline. We will work on developing a minimum of 10 chapters/scenes. Once the chap-ters/scenes are lined out with simple bullet point phrases, the class will learn how to break down the information into bullet point subheads which will be the backbone of their book. Once the outline is fleshed out, the instructor will use his experience in writing seven books as well as having published 17 books by various authors. He will be encouraging class attendees to make a mockup of a cover for their book as well to help keep their motivation level up. The finished product will entail an unedit-ed, first-draft manuscript.

Yoga - KundaliniAll yoga aims to unite the body, mind, and spirit. Pa-tanjali, author of the Yoga Suturas, wrote that the Kundalini energy can be “awakened” by physical ex-ercises, (Hatha Yoga), breath control, (pranayama), visualization, (Raja Yoga), and chanting, (Bhakti Yo-ga). Kundalini yoga as taught by Fred Welter consists of a combination of these four practices. Fred Welter has been studying Yoga for thirty years and loves to share the information gathered over the years. Fred will give you a deep understanding and insight into the practice of Yoga.

Balance, Stretch, & Strengthening For Seniors

NEW Join our gentle exercise class for aging bones and muscles. As we age, we all lose some of our

sense of balance; it can be regained through specific exercises; what a great way to reduce the possibility of tripping and falling! We also begin to lose bone density which can be regained by working with weights. Weights (resistance training) can actually begin to reverse loss of bone mass, therefore reduc-ing the risk of osteoporosis, stress fractures…And, great news! Recent research has proven that women involved in weight training versus just balance & toning exercises do better at cognitive and memory function. The exercises are gentle and can be adapt-ed to your particular needs. Standing, sitting, floor work, what works for you! Please wear comfortable clothing and bring 2 bottles of water and light weights if you have them.

SWIMMING

Synchronized SwimmingBallet in the water! Synchronized swimming is not only beautiful but is a great way for your child to make friends, tone their entire body, and learn fun dance moves in the water. The Synchro Belles Team is a nationally ranked synchronized swimming team and 6 time State Champions. The only pre-requisite for the beginners level is to possess the ability to float on their backs and swim one length of the pool - above or under water. It is also helpful if the child has any dance, gymnastic, tumbling or swimming background, but these are not mandatory. Swim-mers not only learn to set and achieve athletic goals but also focus on maintaining high academic stan-dards. The Synchro Belles welcome your child to be a part of this growing sport.

TENNIS

Tennis Fun & FundamentalsOnce again, we will be teaching Tennis for children ages of 5-16 years! This sport builds physical endur-ance, hand-to-eye coordination and sportsmanship. Our classes have been so popular that we have ex-panded the program to include a new Friday after-noon class at the A1A Center and a very special ad-vanced class that children must try out for and pass a rigorous skills test! This group will eventually be-come a competitive team and play in local tourna-ments. Coach Smith makes learning Tennis fun and exciting.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

QuickStart Tennis is the USTA format for children ages 5–10 years old. QuickStart Tennis appropri-ately scales down all aspects of regulation ten-nis—including equipment, court dimensions, and scoring—so that the game becomes specifically tailored to the age and size of the child. Children “play to learn” rather than “learn to play”.

North East Florida Dance AcademyThe Art of Dance

Introducing your child to the art of dance at a young age sets the scene for a future that includes creative movement, flex-ibility, physical fitness, performance skills, and cultural ap-preciation. With classes for children as young as two years old through teens and adults, the North East Florida Dance Academy (NEFDA), through the Flagler County Schools’ Adult and Community Education Department, offers a wide variety of dance genres to interest students of all ages. NEF-DA is dedicated to providing classical dance training with instructors who hold Bachelor’s Degrees in Education, teach-ing certificates from Dance Masters of America and Dance Educators of America, and who conduct classes with the ut-

most professionalism. All instructors are employed by the Flagler County School District and are fin-gerprinted and background checked to ensure student safety.

The North East Florida Dance Academy has been operated by Adult and Community Education for over eleven years. Well organized and smooth running daily classes are offered year round. Classes are held in ballet, tap, and acrobatics at progressive levels. Children ages 2 to 3 ½ also have fun with Creative Dance, those ages 4 to 5 ½ may participate in a special Pre-School Dance class. As children get older they may join classes in jazz, musical theatre, lyrical, and hip hop styles of dance. Children 12 and older may advance to Ballet on Pointe. Class fees are very reasonable and discounts are offered for multiple and combination classes.

Students enjoy the excitement of performing at the annual end of year recital, and other dance per-formance experiences. Participation in recitals is not mandatory for students, but all NEFDA students are welcome. Encourage your children in the arts and let them experience the joy of dance and performance.

SHARE YOUR WISDOMJosie C. Garcia, an owner of Spa Floridian in Palm Coast and a technical

advisor of the Cosmetology Technical Advisory Committee, took the time to “Share Her Wisdom” on Professionalism with the Cosmetology and Facial

Specialty students at Flagler Technical Institute.

Professionalism is the key to success not only in the beauty industry but also in any business. It doesn’t matter if we are the owner or the worker. Everyone is equal when it comes to the reputation of the business. Physical AppearanceWe should be a reflection of how our client wants to appear. We have to take the time to put ourselves together; showing enthusiasm, cheerfulness, and interest. AttitudeGreet every client with warmth and sincerity. If you are not a people person, now is the time to change your attitude, otherwise you are in the wrong business. The most precious time is NOW. You don’t have to wait until you graduate to change your attitudes. These phrases can help you keep a good attitude: • First and foremost - The Golden Rule -”Do unto others as we would have others do unto us”.• Second - The secret for happiness is to show compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness and

above all, LOVE. Without love, we cannot show all of the above. And be thankful, ALWAYS, for our blessings. • Third - The power of now for a worry-free life. Face the situation NOW and act on it. Let go of the past. The future

is yet to come.• Fourth - On giving. We do not neglect to do good and to share what we have. We do not have to wait to get rich.

We have time and talent to share.• Fifth - Attitude about ourselves. We take care of ourselves, we forgive ourselves. Good health is everyone’s major

source of wealth. Without it, we cannot do any of the above. CommunicationThe fastest way to accomplish what we want to do is through communication. We should focus on the person’s words by being attentive. By listening, we would be aware of the needs of others and be able to communicate our needs. Tips on good communication: • Paraphrasing: put into our own words what the other person has said by using fewer words.• Reflecting: focus on feelings, emotions and experience.• Summarizing: sum up what the other person has said.• Questioning: to ensure our understanding in a conversation, never be afraid to ask questions. Being an Expert in our FieldBecome an authority in our field by educating ourselves. Watch videos on skin care which I am donating to FTI library. Go to beauty conferences. Get on the internet. Read spa and salon magazines. Goals Be goal oriented. I wish you good health, happiness and above all, love!

THANK YOU, JOSIE, FOR SHARING YOUR WISDOM.
