Iam so glad that I received a large number of responses

from members that want to be on a committee. In the next couple weeks I will have every one in place. A lot of members want to

serve on the Standards Committee, and that is great, so it is taking just a little longer than I expected.

You all should have received your Guidebook by now. It looks great. The crew did a great job, lots of good articles, pictures, and nice ads. If you didn’t received one please contact John Neff, he will get one to you.

Putting that book together is a lot of work, and lots of members putting in extra hours on the committee to produce such a great book, so make sure you thank them for all there hard work.

Don’t forget about the National New Zealand show in the spring. It will be a great show, so start planning on making this show, and bring lots of good New Zealands of all varieties. These clubs go out of their way to make the show a success, and they do this for you the Members, so don’t disappoint them. Lets show up with an entry. I know that it is costing more and more to get to the shows, But the National New Zealand show only comes once a year, so it is time to shine our breed, and support one another and have a great time. So lets see you all there with some of that excellent show stock and make this a great show with lots of New Zealands. Who knows this may be your time to shine.

I will be looking for donations for ads and specials for the National New Zealand show be held in Wisconsin in 2013, so show your support. It will be history, as there has never been a National New Zealand show held in the State of Wisconsin. Be a part of this history. We’d like to invite all to come and show your rabbits and have fun.

Sue Borden is helping Larry with the banquet for the ARBA Convention, so any one who would like to help out, that would be great. We will use the Drury Hotel for the Host hotel this year, so make your reservation if you have not done so, as they fi ll up fast.

This year old man winter gave lots of us a break with limited cold days and snow. Everyone is getting into breeding a little earlier than normal. so Kansas might have a large number of New Zealands entered, which would be great. So keep those nest box’s full and I will see you in the spring

Remember youth members.... get your youth scholarship applications and get them fi lled out before August 1st. Time will fl y by before you know it.

I would like to ask our membership to please sit down and write aritcles for our times as we can use more knowlege to help other members

See you all in the spring.

Dave

I sounds like some goodIInews in the making. Sarah IIKlindt is talking about startinga club in Iowa and Jean Harris had a note on face book about

a national in Reno, Nevada. You certainly haveour support girls. John Neff, Tony Fortney, DonnieHornbach and Sue Borden are putting a club togetherfor a National in Louisville, Kentucky for 2014. Whata GREAT deal!

Before I go any further with my report I have some more

“BIG” Convention News to report… Congratulations to Terry Grubb for winning “Best Meat Pen”. This is

another great win for our favorite breed…I trust by the time you read this that you have

received & enjoyed the new Guidebook? Thank-you to all that worked so hard on this, especially Dick Gehr. Dick worked tirelessly laying out this latest great edition. Thank-you Dick for all that you do for the Federation…

I would like to discuss our Sweepstakes system again. Please remember it can take as much as 60+ days before you may see your points recorded. If you do have any questions about your points, it is best to contact us by email, that way Julie can just look up the answers and get back to you quicker. The club email is [email protected] , please do not send emails to my business email address…

Julie & Dick continue to make improvements to the Club Program. Whoever does take over for us, will have it much easier when that time comes. We have a few of the membership’s email addresses, but want to make sure we have all the current email addresses for all the members. Please send us an email with your name so we can be sure that we have the latest information. In the future we should be able to send out membership renewals via email. This will save the Federation so much money…

It’s time to focus on The Texas National. This group continues to work hard & this will be another Great National. Please do all that you can to support this club and their hard working members. We all know how expensive it is to travel to these Nationals, but this group has worked very hard and they deserve our support. They did a great job in 2008 and 2012 will be no different. I look forward to seeing you ALL in Fort Worth on April 20-22nd… Have a safe trip…

I don’t have much news about Wichita, other than Larry Snavely & Sue Borden have been working with the Drury, our Host Hotel and our Banquet facility. Watch for more details as they become available.

I do have some exciting news… The SENZRBA has reformed and received our ARBA Charter. At the Spring National we will be submitting a bid for the 2014 NZ National to be held in Louisville KY in conjunction with the KY State Convention. At this time, they will also host the Californian National and are working on

5 January - February - March 2012.

Greetings from the greatGGState of Ohio. So far we GGhad a pretty mild winter here. GG

We only had fi ve or six spells ofsub-zero weather. When we did have the cold spellit only lasted a couple of days at a time. Sure madeit nice on thawing crocks. Last fall we had so muchrain that the farmers did not get all of their crops off. They had to wait until it froze to get into the fi elds. With the mild temperatures there still is a little bit ofthe crops in the fi elds in mid February.

Show season has already started in Indiana andis about to start in Ohio. It will be good to see ourrabbit friends again. It may have only been a coupleof months since we showed, but it seems like forever. In two months it will be time for the 2012 NewZealand National in Fort Worth, Texas. The older youget the faster the time fl ies.

Rick, Dick and John and whoever else that helpedwith the New Zealand Guidebook did a wonderful job.I think this is the nicest guidebook we ever received. Thanks for a job well done.

See you all at the upcoming shows. Remember tokeep all our ailing members in your prayers.

Larry

Greetings from South GGDakota.GGThe fi rst shows of the new

year were held on January 28 in Sioux Falls. There wereabout50 New Zealands in each show

with all varieties represented. In show A a brokenblack Senior doe was chosen BOB and in show B awhite 6-8 buck was picked. The next show will be inWatertown, SD on February 18th. Hopefully we willhave as good a turn out as in Sioux Falls. Our springshows start the last weekend in March and and runthrough the second weekend in June. Then it willbe lockup time for the summer heat. The way ourwinter has been it could be a very hot dry summer.Sure hope I’m wrong.

At the present time I have lots of young reds andjust a few of the other colors. However I have severaldoes of each color in the “maternity ward” so I’mhoping that there will be enough of each for the fallshows and the ARBA convention. I will have severalreds (I hope as I have been getting lots of callsfor them--just this evening I got a call for 9 youngdoes and a young buck). and only token numbers ofthe other colors at the Spring Nationals I’m lookingforward to a great time in Ft. Worth. It appears atthis time that there will be four of us coming and twoof them will be new exhibitors on the National scene.Maybe they will catch on and become a Fibber orHarry in the future. We need these grass roots typesto get involved and become future leaders for ourgreat breed.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in Texas.

By now everyone should BBhave a copy of the new Guidebook. A lot of hard workwent into this guidebook and unexpected glitches, but it is now a reality. We had 4 mistakes that I know of and we are very sorry about them. Asidefrom that, I am very pleased with the fi nal productand hope everyone enjoys this guidebook. A specialthanks to Dick Gehr for his endless hours of work inmaking this guidebook one of the very best in therabbit world.

We had our Pa State convention a few weeks ago,and had great weather for a change. Had a greatturnout of New Zealand’s both days. Looking forwardto the upcoming shows this spring. Unfortunately Iwill not be able to attend the National NZ show in FtWorth, TX in April. From the sound of things, theyare going to put a great show for all NZ breeders andhope they have a great show. It is getting tougherfor our State Specialty clubs to host a National andthis is something our Board will have to address atsome point in time.

I had many positive comments about our lastTimes issue. The larger size and much better clarityand color were the main comments. Thanks Dick formaking our Times great!!!

Breeders in our area are still feeling the effects oflast year’s heat. There are many 4H and FFA leaderslooking for good breeding stock as the breedingtime nears for each of these local shows. It is goodto see that more of these local shows seem to behaving the breeding show for show stock. Let us allcontinue to help the youth breeders as they are ourfuture.

llo from northernHH l. It has been a mildHHwinter so far but at this writing it is suppose to let us know thatwinter is still here.

Spring shows will be starting soon, we hope to go to more this year, Sues timeand money permitting. I hope everyone has a lotof potential winners coming up to go to Texas. Asof this time we plan on going, we will be travelingwith Lavern Ritzma, Max Reeser, and Arnold Meyer( he raises Florida Whites, but we won’t hold thatagainst him) they are all from our area. It suremakes for a nicer trip when you have other peoplethat yourselves to talk to and it gives Sue someoneto help drive as I won’t drive. We had made up our minds that we were not going to go until they askedwe said didn’t think so and they said they wanted togo so we are going.

It wasn’t that we didn’t want to go it is just tofar for 1 person to drive by themselves. Don’t likemissing out on all the friends we would not see.

Don’t forget to send us your nominations forOutstanding Member of the Year and for Hall of Fame, you will fi nd those requirements and formsin the NZ Guide book on pages 32-33. Please followthose guidelines so that we don’t have to rejectsomeone because they weren’t followed.

Would like to wish Al Esterline the best of luckwith his COD for the Blues.

Would like to thank everyone for the prayers andthoughts during my time of sorrow and now pleaseextend the same to Paul Borden and his family withhis mothers passing.

I am closing so Sue can get this to Dick, hope tosee you down the road.

Before we know it the BBspring nationals will be BBhere. The word spring soundsreally good to me, because I cannot take the cold weather like I did in my younger years. I will be looking forward to seeing everyone at the FortWorth, TX Spring NZ Nationals.

We are working hard on the blues and spending alot of time on them, getting ready for our presentationin Kansas. Our group is in the process of rewritingthe blue standards.

I have some very positive information on our newSINZRB club, in Indiana. The club completed a verysuccessful year, by having 3 very successful NewZealand specialty shows, thanks to Kim and CarolynnShaffer. Our membership has doubled, picking upa lot of young and energetic members and youthbreeders.

This year we have all ready had our fi rst successfulshow.

Brent Hadley is setting up our State of IndianNew Zealand Rabbit Breeders (SINZRB) website, toget information to breeders outside of the state ofIndiana; also, this will be a great service to our clubmembers.

Nichole Mudrack has started a Facebook page for,(Indiana New Zealand Rabbit Breeders). We are alsolooking into a youth program. We have a long way togo with our club, but we are making great progress.

See you all at the Spring Nationals in Texas

H llo from the Pacifi cHH orth WestHHWhat a different winter. Our

rabbits haven’t figured out whether to put on their winter fur coats or start molting for

their spring coat. We have been fortunate not havingany extreme cold times and only a couple weeks ofsnow. And I have noticed everyone has had a “upsidedown” winter.

Our fi rst Washington show was held in mid Januarywith a nice turnout of New Zealands. The interest inNew Zealands is very strong in the northwest. I amgetting calls all the time for breeding stock. Most ofus have sold out our available rabbits , all we can dois to tell people to contact us later in the spring.

This past month I have been laid up with a kneereplacement. I have been cooped up long enoughtime to head to a show soon. Our New Zealandmentor “Dale Wilcox” has been under the weather. But from all reports he is doing much better.

Please note that my e-mail address has changed. In early January my account was hacked. New e-mailaddress: [email protected].

I am looking forward to Texas. I have my planeand motel reservations made. It will be great to seeeveryone.

A big pat on the back to Rick and Dick for a greatjob with our new “Guide Book”. It is very nice.

Jean

Well it sure has beenWWa mild winter here in WWIowa with very little snow. After the last 2 or 3 winters we hadthis is a welcome break to have a mild winter once. I think thisis the least amount of frozen water bowls I have everhad. The does that have had litters this winter havedone a good job raising them but the problem is Ididn’t get many does bred. Anyway looking forwardto the spring show season which is getting ready tostart in Iowa and Illinois now. I am very excitedabout the spring national in Ft. Worth. It sounds likewe are going to a very nice place so I hope thier willbe a good showing of New Zealands

Teddy Dixon, 74, passed away suddenly from astroke on May 15, 2011 at Davis County Hospital inBloomfi eld, IA. Teddy was a lifetime member of both the ARBA (since 1962) and the New ZealandRabbit Breeders Association. He raised and showedNew Zealand Whites and Dutch rabbits earning manyribbons, trophies, and plaques over the years at boththe local and state levels in Missouri & Iowa. Hevolunteered his time judging local 4-H fairs in Iowa,Illinois, and Missouri and helped many young peopleget their start in raising rabbits. He was known bymany for his love of the hobby and his cheerful, generous spirit. He was known for bringing his ownfarm-produced honey to rabbit shows for his friendsto enjoy.

Ted had a love for the outdoors and worked forthe Soil Conservation Service of NE Missouri andthe U.S. Forestry Service of Poplar Bluff, MO andwas honored for 30+ years of service. He laterretired to the family farm in Iowa overseeing itsoperation and continuing the hobby he enjoyed somuch. As well as producing and selling honey, Tedalso made walnut furniture using lumber from hisown farm and sold the nuts his trees produced. Healso enjoyed for many years being actively involvedin the local Farm Bureau Agency as well as being aDistrict Representative in Des Moines. He was a fanof Southern Gospel Quartet Music and traveled farand wide to enjoy many a concert and the annualSouthern Gospel Quartet Convention in Louisville,Ky. He was a faithful and active member of BibleBaptist Church, in Ottumwa, IA. He loved life andhis Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Ted is survived by his wife, Josephine Dixon, of55 years and his two children Kim (Clint) Neal ofQuincy, IL and Cletus (Jody) Dixon of Laurel, IA.“PaPa’s” big smile and warm hugs will also be dearlymissed by his four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He will be sorely missed.

The following article was submitted by Kim Neal, daughter of Teddy Dixon. Those that knew Teddywill no doubt recognize that familiar smile that hehad at all times. Teddy will be missed by those ofus that knew him. (He had just won BIS at the 2010Missouri State Fair when this picture was taken).

AsAA with all accomplishments in our lives there slies the undisputable truth that our legacy AA

must be passed on. We as rabbit breeders work sohard to study the genetics for just the right breeding, the best conditioning, best grooming techniques forthe ultimate purpose of producing “show winningrabbits”. It takes years of dedication and hardwork. Who are we going to pass this informationon to? You might make the difference in a youngkid’s life by helping them become the best rabbitbreeder they can be. Mentoring a youth and helpingthem enjoy our hobby as much as we do is a veryfulfilling endeavor. They can win competitions thatcan help pay for college and trade schools. Sure, they may stray away from the hobby while goingto college but, they may come back and becomejudges or breeders in the future. All we can do isencourage them in the best way we can by impartingthe knowledge that we have to them.

Our kids started to show before my husbandand I did. Now most of our kids are grown and incollege and Pete and I show New Zealand whitesand brokens in the open. It has been a long journeywith our kids showing pigs, turkeys, broilers, goats, and rabbits. Now, all we do is rabbits. Three of ourfour kids showed through 4-H and FFA to get collegemonies and scholarships. It brought our familycloser together and provided good work ethics toour kids.

I am the President of an all breed club nearHouston, Texas. Texas has many kids who show meatpens in their local fairs and rodeos. Our club putson a workshop to teach kids how to raise meat pens.We have it in the early fall right after school starts. Each year our attendance increases. Last year wehad over 60 kids plus their parents. Not only do wetalk about the commercial breeds but many of thefancy breeds as well. Our club members bring theirrabbits up for the kids to hold and pet. It is a “handson experience”. Many of these kids never have theopportunity to see all the different breeds of rabbitsand get a kick out of it. We have information in abooklet which we provide about diseases, husbandry, choosing breed stock, disqualifi cations in judging, etc. We also give out rabbit related door prizeswhich our club provides. It is very gratifying whenthe kids ask raise their hands and asks questions. That is when you know that they are interested.

I encourage you to help the kids in your arealearn about our hobby. You never know what kindof infl uence you may have on their lives. It is veryrewarding when you get a phone call from a kid youhelped telling you about their win at their fair. Iget cards from kids thanking me for my help and itbrings a smile to my face. It is worth it!

15 January - February - March 2012.

T s issue of the Times has several goodTTarticles. I have reprinted a couple from 2010TTthat should be good with the spring breeding seasonupon us.

John Neff also has a Treasurer’s report for 2010-2011, so if you have any questions regarding clubfi nances, contact John.

The AFNZRB Guidebook has been distributed, andshy of a couple ads that did not appear exactly asthey were submitted to me, we have received manygood comments on the publication.

Congratulations (and a great big THANKS) go out toall those advertising in the Guidebook, as it is thoseads that allows the publication to show the qualityit does. I feel having all ads in color is a major plus, and makes the publication look very impressive.

To those whose ads didn’t appear as they should, you have my humble apology. Unfortunately Isuffered some hardware problems just prior toputting the Guidebook together, and I was unable torecover some of the materials I had previously beensent. We have had good, positive communicationwith each person affected, and an agreeable solutionto the situation has been reached. I would like toexpress my Thanks to each of those individuals.

Rick Shipe deserves a huge Thank you for hisrole in the publication of the new Guidebook. Rickcoordinated the ads and articles, and was able tosupply me with almost all of the materials I had lostdue to the hardware problem. Without Rick havingthose materials stored in a safe place, you Guidebookmay have only had 8 or 10 pages !! THANKS, Rick!!

Your Board had agreed at the ARBA Conventionin Indianapolis to permit me to switch printers forthe Times. I believe the new look of the magazinehas been very well accepted by those that havecontacted me and remarked on it. The quality ofthe magazine is improved greatly. Pictures are muchmore distinguishable, which makes the publicationmore enjoyable.

With the National Show coming up April 20 - 22, Iam certain a number of you will be making the trekto Ft Worth. There is no better time to get some goodpictures of animals, breeders, groups, etc. PLEASE,if you do take some pictures at the National, sharethem with me. I try to keep a pool of pictures takenat the Nationals and ARBA Conventions, which canbe used at any time. If I am unable to use all of thepictures I receive after one of these events, thosenot used are “pooled” for possible use at a latertime. I can use the pics as fillers in future issues,

or possibly if a future article refl ects on one of theevents. At any rate, SEND ME PICTURES.

The best pictures for me to use are those takenwith digital cameras of 3 mega pixels or higher.I would simply as that if you have a number ofpictures you wish to submit, please send only 1 or 2per email (if submitting them electronically). Withthe higher mega pixel cameras, the size of someof the pictures is very large. My email server onlyallows me so much space in my “In Box”, so if I amunable to download the pictures right away, the boxhas a tendency to become full, and emails are thenreturned.

If you receive a message that an email to me isbeing returned due to the box being full, pleasetry to resend the pictures again at a later time, after I have had a chance to empty my box. I tryto do this several times a day, but if I am out doingsomething in my “real life”, I may not get to it fora day. Especially if I am off judging someplace for aday or weekend.

If you have a lot of pictures you wish to send, it ismuch easier on this end if you can drop them all on aCD or fl ash drive and send it to me via conventionalmail. You are welcome to also just pull the memorycard out of your camera (if that is how you have thepictures stored) and send that to me. I am happy toreturn any media type that you send to me if youwant it back. I am able to read and download picturesfrom just about any type of storage vessel.

I do several National Specialty Club magazines, and I must say that the advertisements in the Timesfar outweigh any of the other clubs. The AFNZRBmembership takes advantage of the magazine toadvertise, and hopefully the results are rewarding.Considering the exposure, the cost of an ad is veryreasonable. If you don’t already have an ad in theTimes or on the website, give it some consideration.I think you will be happy you did.

Remember that the Federation has an awesomelooking patch. These are available with the rabbitin the center either in Black, Broken, Red, or White.Cost of the patches is $6.00 plus $2.00 shipping. Justthink, for the cost of 2 people eating at McDonaldsjust 1 time, you could be sporting one of thesepatches on your show coat. Such a deal !!

The patches are advertised on page 34.If you have ANY questions or comments regarding

the Times, please feel free to contact me directlyand voice your concerns or opinions. Fresh ideas orsuggestions are greatly appreciated.

You can email me at: [email protected] your day, and have a great 2012 !

My Pro’s & Con’s OfNest Box Bedding

by Tony Fortney(Reprint from 2010)

Using the phrase of my good friend DonnieHornback. In search or pursuit of the perfect rabbit.I’m kinda like that with nest box bedding. I keeplooking for the perfect bedding material. We all usedifferent types of materials for this purpose. Woodshavings (pine-aspen) straw, grasses (wheat-orchard)hay (timothy-alfalfa) coconut fibers, chopped corncobs, shredded paper, wood pulp and even manmade fiber mesh. The two most commonly used areprobably wood shavings and straw. Here’s a few pro’sand con’s I have experienced with each one.

(PRO’S) Wood shavings make a soft warm insulatednest. The way it packs down makes for agood denselayer which keeps the cold out.It absorbs moistureand odor well.Easy removal from nest box whencleaning.Used shavings can be spread over wet or damp areas in your rabbitry.Widely available topurchase at pet and farm supply stores.Comingtightly compressed from manufacturer makes foreasy storage and space.Has a endless shelf life andreasonably priced.

(CON’S) As the young grow and move around morethey tend to pulverize the bedding making it morelike sawdust which may or may not cause respiratoryproblems for them.In sawdust form it packs tighterwhich makes it not dry out as quick. It stays damplonger which makes a ideal place for bacteria togrow.

(PRO’S) Straw makes a nice dry nest. Its goodat absorbing moisture.Being hollow it dries outquicker and does’nt stay damp as long.It also makesfor easy nest box cleaning.Fairly easy to fi nd atplant nurseries or from local farmers.Storage lifeis good,One of the delights of using straw to me iswatching the doe make her nest with it.Jumping inand out of the box with a mouth full of straw.Seemsto make them happy.

(CON’S) Some bales of straw could be infestedwith fur mites according to my local veternarian. They live inside the hollow blades. You will have toreplenish it more often.Seems like they eat half ofwhat you put in.It makes manure harder to shovelup.A little messy during storage unless kept incontainers or large garbage bags.Left loose micetend to make their homes in it.

Sometimes no matter which type of bedding weuse or how hard you try to keep your boxes cleanevery so often one or two babies will end up withnest box eye which is very disheartening.I like to usea mixture of both shavings and straw myself. If anyone has any good info or suggestions on this topicgive me a call or better yet put it in the NZ TIMES sowe all can gain a little knowledge.Whichever typeyou prefer keep those babies warm and dry.

Is Your RabbitryProperly Ventilated?

by David Mangione(Reprint from 2010)

Properly ventilated rabbitries will enhancehealth, growth, reproduction and overall conditionof rabbits. Conversely, rabbitries that are notproperly ventilated will cause deterioration of theaforementioned traits.

The temperature for optimum rabbit performanceis about 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Summer heat stress isa severe problem with rabbits. Continuous exposureto temperatures greater than 85 degrees Fahrenheitfor 4-5 days can cause sterility for up to 60 days inmature bucks (bucks usually older than one year). All rabbits are vulnerable to heat prostration whencage temperatures exceed 92 degrees Fahrenheit.

During the winter, naturally ventilated housingis adequate for mature rabbits provided thereare no drafts. Supplemental heat can minimizefrozen water, water lines and maintain growth &performance.

Relative humidity below 35 % dries the respiratorytract which can lead to respiratory problems (i.e.Snuffl es). The same issues can occur when humiditylevels exceed 65 % where too much moisture ispresent in the air.

Insulating walls and roofs of buildings will reduceor moderate summer temperatures in the buildingand reduce winter supplemental heat loss. Insulatingroofs of outside structures can also help to moderatethe affect of summer heat on rabbits.

A healthy air environment in the rabbitry can onlybe achieved through proper ventilation. Maintaininga healthy air environment in a building is morediffi cult verse an outside structure (hutch and/oropen front shed).

Manure buildup as well as excessive hair oncages will reduce air quality and airfl ow. Removingmanure and excessive hair in the rabbitry is criticalto maintaining a healthy air environment.

So where does one go to fi nd out:What size fan do I need? How many fans do I need? What type of fan is best?Where do I locate the fans? What other types of devices are available? What size building is best for natural

ventilation? How much air do I need to move through the

building?

The answer to these questions and others relevantto ventilation can be found through the MidwestPlan Service. The Midwest Plan Service containsdetailed ventilation publications with informationfor rabbits! YES I SAID RABBITS!!!!!!! You can accessthese for sale publications on-line at www.mwps.org.

Properly ventilated rabbitries are synonymous withsuccessful breeding and show stock programs. Askyour self this question, is the air they are breathingthe air you want to breathe? Ventilation providesfresh air and fresh air is what a bunny needs.
