2012 Sports Report
In late 2011, the UNE Law Students’ Society (LSS) and the UNE
Economics’ Society (UES) initiated a sports competition series. The aim
was to bring together the two student societies in the spirit of friendly
rivalry and to provide EBL students a fun alternative to their degree. The
LSS vs. UES sports competitions has continued running throughout
2012.
Although the LSS vs. UES sports competition has been the most
important competition in the sporting affairs of the LSS, it has not been
the only one. The LSS initiated a sports competition series with the UNE
Medical Students’ Association (UNEMSA), with one game having been
played so far in the LSS vs. UNEMSA sports competition.
Term 1, 2012 (30th of March)
Volleyball was the first sport to be played in the 2012 LSS vs.
UES sports competition. Despite the unfortunate delay from the
EBL fire alarm, it was a good day for the LSS.
The volleyball game went on for three rounds. In every round,
the LSS won by an overwhelming margin.
Term 2, 2012 - 24th of May:
Basketball was the second sport in the 2012 LSS vs. UES sports competition.
Each team scored alternately in rapid succession, with each side losing their lead within minutes of
gaining one. In many instances, the UES basketball team held the lead. But in the end the LSS
basketball team achieved a hard-won victory. The score at the end of the game was 41-36 in favour of
the LSS.
Every player on the LSS basketball team was instrumental in bringing about an LSS victory.
As a result of the hard-won basketball victory, the LSS had racked up its third sports victory. The LSS
also become the first of the two societies to gain possession of the LSS vs. UES trophy cup.
27th of July:
During 2012, the LSS has sought to go beyond the UES and challenge UNEMSA. Both societies agreed
to hold touch football as the first game in the series.
Not only was this the first time that the LSS played against UNEMSA, but it was also the LSS’ first
defeat in a sporting competition. The UNEMSA football team proved themselves to be a difficult
opponent and the saturated footy ground did not help the LSS.
So often were the LSS’ defences breached that some of UNEMSA’s surplus substitutes offered to play
for the LSS (which had very few substitutes for the game). In the end, the UNEMSA football team
scored so often that their score was no longer kept. As for the LSS, it scored two tries.
The medical students who played for the LSS should also be thanked for their generosity and for
somewhat leveling the overwhelming odds against the LSS touch football team. The UNEMSA football
team should also be thanked for playing, without whom there would have been no game.
Term 4 (20th of September)
It was unfortunate that Term 3 was a busier-than-normal term for law students. As a result, the third game in the
LSS vs. UES sports competition was postponed to Term 4. It was decided that the 3rd & 4th games in the 2012
LSS vs. UES sports competition would be held on the 20th of September.
However, it is important to note that the UES held an AGM on the previous night. It was at this AGM that that
the UES changed their name to the University of New England Economics and Business Society or UNEEBS.
In consideration of the upcoming end-of-year exams and the fact that most participants were not sports
professionals, LSS and the UES agreed to play a more relaxing sport for the third game. The sport chosen was
lawn balls.
It was on that Thursday afternoon on the flat-greens of the Armidale Bowling Club that the LSS faced off
against the UES. Despite the heat of the afternoon sun and the determination of the UES bowling team, the LSS
achieved its third victory over the UES. The final score was 3-2 in favour of the LSS.
Not so long after the conclusion of lawn bowls, the LSS faced off against the UES in boat racing. This game
would be the final game in the LSS vs. UES sports competition for 2012.
Not so long after the conclusion of lawn bowls, the LSS faced off against the UES in boat racing. This game
would be the final game in the LSS vs. UES sports competition for 2012.
It was decided that Ishmam Ahmed would serve as the judge, since he was the only one present who was not
biased against either society as he was a member of both. After that, the game went for three rounds.
In the first round, the UES won a clear victory. In the second round, the judge declared a draw. Although there
are strong reasons to believe that the UES had in fact won, the judge’s poor choice with regard to selecting his
point-of-view for the second round prevented him from making a clear determination. For the third round, the
UES sealed its victory in boat racing.
However, through winning volleyball, basketball and lawn bowls the LSS sealed victory overall in the 2012
LSS v UES Sporting Competition.
