CONDITIONS OF CONTEST
i. All rules of the NBCA and TBL will be strictly enforced.
ii. Bandspersons must appear in band uniform. iii. The official entry form must state whether or not competitors require the
official accompanist. If this is not done it will be assumed that the competitors will supply their own accompanist.
iv. Competitors will be permitted to use their own accompanist in any class
provided that the chosen accompanist is available when the competitor is due to perform. Otherwise, the competitor must use an official accompanist.
v. All Own Choice music must be handed to the appropriate official at least
30 minutes prior to the commencement of the class. All bars must be numbered.
vi. Competitors must report to the Contest Co-ordinator at least 20 minutes
before commencement of their class. vii. For all Own Choice music classes, the following time limits will be adhered
to:

viii. Music for Champion of Champions will be Own Choice. Competitors may
use a Test Solo if they wish. ix. If a competitor is entering in more than one class they must play a different
piece of music in each class. x. Only the starting times for the sessions will be provided. Competitors must
ensure that they are available to perform when, and as, required. PLEASE NOTE:
Notification of scratchings assists with the smooth running of the contest.
A novice is a person who has not gained a first place at any NBCA, TBL or affiliated solo contest.
Please ensure that any trophies held by you or your band members are returned in good condition on or before the day of the contest.
A competitor may only enter in one novice section.

Victoria
Mark Ford is currently employed as a Music
Teacher at Wesley College Melbourne, a position
he has held since 2006. He has been a music
teacher in Victorian Schools for over 20 years.
His previous teaching appointments include;
Head of Brass and Band Studies at Westbourne Grammar School
and brass teacher at Bendigo Senior Secondary, Eaglehawk and
Golden Square Secondary Colleges prior to joining the Royal
Australian Navy Band – Melbourne Detachment as a full-time
professional musician in 2001.
Mark is a well-regarded educationalist and many schools and
students have benefited from his services. In addition to his regular
teaching, managerial and administrative duties, he has assisted a
large number of students to prepare for examinations and musical
competitions. A number of school music directors have sought his
counsel (through workshops) in preparations for major festival,
eisteddfod and competition performances. He is regarded as a
senior teacher who regularly mentors new teachers in schools.
He has also taught and educated in tertiary institutions. In 1997 he
was lecturer/conductor of large brass ensemble at The Victorian
College of the Arts. He was lecturer in Brass at The University of
Melbourne in 1999. He is teacher of euphonium at the Australian
Defence Force School of Music.
Mark is an internationally renowned conductor of bands. Since
1996, he has been Principal Conductor with Kew Band Melbourne,
one of Australasia’s premier bands and with that band won three
Australian National A Grade Championship titles in 1998, 2000 &
2011. In 2009, Mark directed Kew Band Melbourne to its first FABB
Australasian Open Championship title. He has been used as a
guest professional conductor with a number of bands in Australia. In
2011, he directed North Shore Brass Auckland in the New Zealand
National Championships.
He was associate Musical Director of the Victorian State Youth
Band from 1987-1993 and was Director of Music and Musical
Advisor to the Queensland State Youth Band for its 1998 and 1999
seasons. In 2008, Mark was awarded Life Membership of the
Victorian Bands’ League for his services to brass bands and the
VBL.
In 1999, Mark directed Kew Band Melbourne on a ground-breaking
tour of Japan as guests of the All Japan Brass Band Festival. In
2001, Mark accepted an invitation to travel to the Netherlands to
conduct Brass Band de Waldsang in the Survento contest. Brass
Band de Waldsang won the Championship Section of this
prestigious contest under his baton. His reputation as one of
Australia’s finest directors of bands was acknowledged in 2001,
when he was appointed Principal Conductor of ‘Australian Brass’
(National Band of Australia) for its 2001 season. More recently, Kew
Band Melbourne have accepted an invite to represent Australia in
the World Band Championships and Conference in Kerkrade,
Holland in July 2013.
Mark is one of Australia’s most sought after brass adjudicators.
Over the years, Mark has been Chief adjudicator in the
Queensland, New South Wales, Victorian, South Australian and
Tasmanian State Championships. He has also officiated at the
prestigious Melbourne Schools’ Band Festival and National
Eisteddfod in Canberra.
He is also a renowned soloist who has won many Local, State and
National Championship titles. His skills as a multi-instrumentalist
have seen him win major solo titles on a number of brass
instruments. He was principal trumpet/cornet in The University of
Melbourne Wind Ensemble from 1994-1999.
Mark Ford is widely known as an energetic, innovative and
passionate musician with vision and flair, who has considerable
experience at a high level as a professional musician, administrator,
motivator and educator.
Glenn Schultz – B. Mus (Perf.), B. Ed (Music)
Tasmania
Glenn Schultz is Head of Music at Taroona High
School and also lectures in Trumpet & Brass
pedagogy at The Hutchins School and the
Conservatorium of Music. He is a highly sort after
Band Director/Conductor with an international reputation for
excellence in music education & performance. He has lead master
classes and workshops in Australia and overseas and is co-founder
of the Island Brass Academy; an organisation dedicated to the
education of talented and gifted Tasmanian brass players. Glenn is
also Artistic Director of the Elizabeth College Stage Band Summer
School.
Glenn’s ability to perform across all styles makes him a highly sort
after Trumpet player. His theatre credits include Principal Trumpet
for the musicals; West side Story, Fame, Les Misérables, Big River,
Sound of Music, Anything Goes, Sweet Charity, Annie, Guys and
Dolls, Into the Woods, Thoroughly Modern Milly, 42nd Street, Jesus
Christ superstar, Miss Saigon, Spamalot and Copacabana to name
a few. He has performed with many big names including Natalie
Cole, Anthony Warlow, Tommy Tico, Rhonda Burchmore, Marty
Rhone, Tom Burlinson, The Whitlams and jazz legend James
Morrison.
Glenn has been performing with the Tasmanian Symphony
Orchestra since the age of 19 and has toured and recorded with the
Australian Youth Orchestra. He has appeared on numerous ABC
recordings, live broadcasts, film scores and advertisements. Glenn
is co-founder of the Island Brass Quintet who performs regular
concerts, master classes and education concerts as part of the
Island Brass Academy program.
