The look today is sleek, sexy and classy and can be worn a number of ways. No longer opting for the tight ballerina bun, its presented with texture, curls, and even adorned with braids. Who thought something so simple would hit this big? For crying out loud there is even a television show named Bun-heads. Let's just say this up do is no longer just for cutesy balleri-nas.

To add your own unique flare, add some hair jewelry or head bands to spice things up. So next time you’re in a hair jam grab your utensils brush that hair up and put your bun in place. No one would ever know that your day started out grey!

One of the many questions I’m met with by another that’s crazed with the natural hair trend. Exactly, a trend. My answer, as always, is “since birth.” Here is usually where I’m met with that “yeah, right” face.

As of late, natural hair has been the talk of the town. Numerous pictures of Solange are everywhere followed by a caption describing her on a scene sport-ing her natural tresses. Even Vogue has jumped on the bandwagon, giving a full spread to those of a “Nappier Root”. By the way, Kudos to new Covergirl Janelle Monae, holding it down for the natural sisters.

Now, am I mad that it’s a trend? No, of course not. My only hope is that this trend, turns into a movement until it has morphed into a way of life. The beauty of your natural tresses is beyond explana-tion. Sporting your natural hair sends the signal, I know who I am and I know I am beautiful, naturally.

Quite honestly, I have been natural since birth, no relaxers or texturizers of any sort, but I have not always been happy about it. In my adolescent years, I cried for a relaxer, I cried to have hair like

“Oh my goodness, how long have you been natural?!”

my older sister and best friend. So, my mom pressed my hair and I knew I was the hottest little lady walking the halls, that was until after P.E. class. This continued through junior high. It wasn’t until high school, one day my best friend and I were washing my hair, after towel-ing it. She pointed out my curl pattern. I had been doing this for years but had never took the time to actually take a look at my hair and behold what I had. Instead I whined and cried to have my “nappy hair” beat into submission. However, that day sparked a change in my view of my hair and in my attitude. From there, the presses became less often and I focused more on finding the right routine to make my curls more definitive, not as frizzy and dry but shini-er and springier.

My mom was happy that I’d finally embraced my natural curls as she is natural as well. She made it clear that she wasn’t budging on her decision for my hair. Her response to my re-curring question regarding a relaxer had al-ways been, “yes you can have one, as soon as you get out my house.”

Well, its five years later, I’m out her house with a couple bills in my name, so I guess that makes me grown. However, I am still natural and loving it as we all should. Join the move-ment, embrace your beauty, get in touch with your roots and maintain your natural. It’s more than a trend; it’s a way of life.

HowdidAlopeciaAffectMeBy Cayla Staples

“How did Alopecia affect my life”? Every time I hear that it makes me think of fewer friends, being depressed all the time, feeling weird or covering up what I don’t want to but have to.

When I was first diagnosed with Alopecia I was in the 2nd grade and really didn’t care a lot because I was so young and not thinking about what people thought of me. The doctors said it was caused by stressed but the only thing I stressed about was my family because then we always fought and my sister wasn’t really there. Then it went away for 4 years. I thought it was gone but in 6th grade it came back, it wasn’t as serious but I was losing a great amount of my hair. That was really a tough time for me because I was mak-ing new friends and it was hard to balance family, school and my hair loss but luckily I still had enough hair to cover up my bald spots. So my parents put me in counseling. I was there for 6 months then I stopped because I thought I was better. When the alopecia went away I was ecstat-ic. So my whole 7th grade year it was good, I had no problems and no worries until……..8th grade. I remember how sad and

hurt I was when I saw that bald spot in the middle of my hair. I wanted to die, I felt like somebody told me that I was dying. All I could think about was “I’m in 8th grade, I’ve been look-ing forward to this since 5th grade and now this. What am I going to do”? I was hurt and felt sick in the heart. Everybody I knew felt sorry for me. They kept telling me “Inner beauty never falls out” or “you’ll get through this its ok”. My parents put me in counseling again but now I like it a lot.

Somebody once told me “Alopecia isn’t you, it’s happening to you; you are Cayla Nicole Staples not Alopecia”. So because of that I have a little more confidence than usual because she was right and those words were the most helpful words that I’ve ever heard since this journey. In school, I finally got the cour-age to tell some of my classmates abut Alopecia. In my AVID class, my teacher told us that we were going to

Page 37: 2012 September Issue - Midwest Black Hair Magazine

37

do a passion project, where you pick some-thing that you are passionate about and want people to know about. I decided my passion would be to make my class aware of Alope-cia. During my presentation, I was able to answer questions and tell the class that I had alopecia. I was so happy to get that off of my chest. I have even done an interview and photos shoot for Encore HD Hair Magazine. Because of that, even more people ask me about my condition. I believe that maybe if I make people aware, they won’t be afraid, think I am sick, or just stare so much.

Alopecia Awareness Month

So how has alopecia affected my life? It’s taking me on a Journey of Wisdom...and Courage. This journey is so hard sometimes, but even though I have really hard days, I keep trying to stick with the journey, knowing that things will get better.
