WHAT IS THE OKLAHOMA STATE CHARITABLE CAMPAIGN?The Oklahoma State Charitable Campaign (SCC) is an annual, unified fundraising effort that provides state employees with the opportunity to make donations to their favorite charitable organizations through the convenience of payroll deduction or one-time gifts. The SCC is governed by the Oversight Committee for State Employee Charitable Contributions (OCSECC), which is comprised of seven state employee appointees.

FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT SCC DIRECTOR:Mike SlackP.O. Box 837Oklahoma City, OK 73101p. 405.523.3548e. [email protected]/scc

Frequently Asked Questions

HOW DO I GIVE?During the annual campaign, all state employees have the opportunity to make charitable contributions via a provided pledge card. All donations, large or small, are welcomed and greatly appreciated. We encourage you to consider the many needs in your community and make the most generous gift possible. Through payroll deductions, employees may divide the annual contribution into smaller, regular amounts which are deducted each pay period during the coming calendar

WHO CAN I GIVE TO?This charity guide lists all of the eligible charitable federations and their member charities. Through the SCC you may designate your gift to federations or member charities by indicating choices on the pledge card. Each federation and charity is listed separately, with an assigned four-digit charity code (e.g. 1234) that must be used when making a selection to ensure that your contribution reaches the charity or charities you wish to support.

To support a federation and have your gift shared among all of its charities, choose the federation code as it appears preceding the federation name and description. To support an individual charity within a federation, select that charity’s code as it appears preceding the charity name and description. Pledge cards returned with donations but without charity

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE UNDESIGNATED DONATIONS?According to Oklahoma Statutes, undesignated money shall be distributed in the same proportion as designated dollars within the state of Oklahoma.

WHAT IS THE ADMINISTRATIVE RATE FOR THE SCC?Administrative costs for the 2011 campaign were 10 percent of funds received. These funds provide for campaign materials creation and printing, postage and supplies, Loaned Executive support, coordinator training, campaign recognition and professional staff. All federations share in the administrative costs proportionate to their designations in the campaign.

HOW DO I CONNECT WITH THE CHARITIES?Throughout the charity guide, you will find the charities’ websites and Twitter names.

year. One dollar per pay period is the minimum deduction for payroll deductions. While payroll deduction is the preferred method, contributions may also be made by check or cash.

code numbers will be counted as undesignated donations.

A Letter from the Governor

A Letter from the SCC Chair

Dear Friend:

Each year, we work together to raise money for the State Charitable Campaign and make our contribution to a better Oklahoma. Your donations support over 260 organizations that provide food for the hungry, education for children in poverty, relief to those who are sick, and daily care for seniors to help them lead active and independent lives. These important agencies touch each and every community in Oklahoma by providing critical services to our friends and neighbors, as well as endless volunteer opportunities.

Oklahomans are generous people who are eager to help their neighbors and willing to serve. This campaign helps connect generous people to those who are truly in need. When you support the campaign you contribute to a stronger Oklahoma. Please join me in making a pledge to support the State Charitable Campaign and thank you for all you do for the people of our great state!

Sincerely,

Mary FallinGovernor

As state employees, we make important choices every day that affect the Oklahoma citizens we serve. Each fall, through the State Charitable Campaign (SCC), we can make a different set of choices that impact others. By contributing to the SCC and designating our gifts to charities, we have an opportunity to support a variety of health and human services programs that improve the quality of life for Oklahomans served by international charities.

Thank you for your ongoing generosity in supporting the State Charitable Campaign. In 2011, central Oklahoma state employees contributed more than $522,000!

We applaud your tremendous job and look forward to great results this year as well. Please join me in making a pledge to support the SCC. Together, we can continue to make Oklahoma an even better place to live, work and grow.

Sincerely,

Dave LopezSecretary of Commerce2012 State Charitable Campaign Chair

Jessica, who volunteers at her local food pantry, enjoys helping her hungry neighbors because she truly understands how they feel – the frustration and fear of not being able to make ends meet, the hesitation to ask for help, and the relief of taking home enough food to get through the month. Jessica’s husband Levi was laid off from his job as a contractor in the United States Air Force. Before that, Levi spent nearly a decade serving hiscountry. When he left the service,he wanted nothing more than to take care of hisyoung family.

Levi has been receiving unemployment, but the assistance ran out in June. Since Jessica stays home full-time with their three young children, the family is now struggling to make ends meet without a steady source of income. Because of gifts to a State Charitable Campaign Charity, Jessica has been able to take home nutritious groceries like canned vegetables, pasta, bread and other important staples from her SCC Charity. She’s thankful that friends like you have given to help families in their times of need. “Thank you!” she says. “It really helps and it’s nice to know that people care.”

SCC volunteer, Debbie Taiser, was driving her regular weekly delivery route and as usual saved her favorite visit for the last stop. Gertie always looked forward to Thursday meal because she knew she would have a delightful visit with Debbie.

The day was no different from any other. Debbie knocked on the door and called out to Gertie but there was no answer. Debbie made her way to the living room and found Gertie in such a weakened state that she was unable to reach the telephone. Debbie immediately sprang into action and called 911 and then Gertie’s family. She stayed by Gertie’s side duringthe ambulance trip and remained with her until her family arrived. Debbie’s friendly visit turned into a life-saving event! This SCC Charity provides needed daily nutrition, friendly visitation, and often life-saving interaction.

When I was 11 years old I had a traumatic incident happen that changed my life. At age 12 I found substances helped numb all thoughts and feelings. I believe this is when my mental health issues started to develop. As time went on all I knew to relieve these symptoms was to use substances. I went through four suicide attempts because I hated myself and my life.

When I got to an SCC Charity, I was a broken man. My life changed at this SCC Charity. The people there believed in me when I did not believe in myself. They gave me the tools to use in my new journey of recovery. I have a wonderful job at a hospital today where

I work with others who are new in their recovery. The reason I have this job is because the SCC Charity believed I was qualified for the position and supported me through the job search process. Today, I am living a life I never would have dreamed possible. I use the tools the SCC Charity gave me to make each day the best it can be.

After her second birthday, Audriwas learning to walk and talk just like any other toddler. In December 2009, her childhood took a turn when she started running low grade fevers, complaining of back pain, limping and suffering from night terrors.

On April 15, 2010, after fourweeks of local doctor visits, shewas referred to a doctor supported by a State Charitable Campaign Charity. She began treatment for Stage 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of tissue cancer, and immediately began aggressive chemotherapy under the watchful eye of Dr. Meyer’s team.

Audri is truly an amazing fouryear old who is an inspiration toeveryone around her. She loves arts and crafts, playing with her sisters and doing anything outside. Her family is very thankful for the care she received from her doctor and the entire cancer team at the hospital which houses many doctors supported by this SCC Charity.

Francisco and Fabian were referred to this SCC Charity for new school uniforms and supplies. Francisco is 10 and in the 5th grade. His brother Fabian, age 9, is in 4th grade. Many schools require student uniforms however the cost is often out of reach for lowincome families. School uniforms, backpacks andschool supplies are provided at no cost to students who are referred by their school. Students personally shop for and select uniforms and supplies they need along with seasonal clothing and shoes.

Francisco and Fabian had outgrown their uniforms. Their mom, Ana, was struggling to patch the worn khaki pants and navy shirts to keep the boys in school. They were down to one uniform a piece that was too small and well worn. After their visit, each of the boys had two new uniforms plus shoes and school supplies. Some schools now follow a year-round school calendar which increases the need for uniforms. For families living in poverty, the choice is often between food and clothing. The students served are able to remain in school as a result of support from this SCC Charity.

Sarah* grew up in a domestic abuse home, and in her adulthood, she found herself continuing the cycle.

Her abuser would put holes in her tires, drain her gas tank so she couldn’t leave, and repeatedly physically and emotionally abuse her. After years of experiencing the abuse, Sarah and her four youngest children were finally able to escape.

“When I came here I was broken, bruised and stripped completely of myself,” Sarah said. “When I left, I was renewed, my life had been saved and I feel like a survivor; I really do.”

Since she escaped the abuse, Sarah has started writing a book, enrolled in GED classes and has dreams of going to college. She is also finalizing her divorce from her abuser.

“Love is not supposed to hurt,” Sarah said. “No one is supposed to live in fear, and because of my renewed life, my children don’t have to live in fear.”

*Sarah’s name has been changed for her safety.
