Welcome to another exciting season of Hillcat Soccer!

As Oklahoma’s fastest growing regional university during the past 10 years, RSU has enjoyed dynamic growth across its entireenterprise, such as:

• Increasing its student population by 75 percent while still maintaining a personalized attention to service that’s become RSU’s hallmark; • Adding new academic programs to meet the needs of Oklahoma’s business and industry;• Constructing two student apartment communities to provide the Tulsa metropolitan area’s only residential, public university; • Expanding and remodeling academic facilities to provide students with up-to-date academic resources; and • Developing strong ties with the communities we serve in order to fulfill our mission of education and service.

RSU’s rapid growth also extends to our intercollegiate athletics, which are a relatively new addition after being reintroduced to campus in 2005. In only a fewshort years, our Hillcat teams have become a vital component of the university’s DNA providing an infectious campus spirit and a strong connection to the com-munity. The university has invested in athletic facilities, including the new baseball/softball complex, Bushyhead Fieldhouse renovations, expansion and turfinstallation at Soldier Field and construction of soccer and cross country facilities on campus.

We appreciate our entire student body for their support of these campus initiatives, including the student fees that funded the recently completed $4 millionrenovations of the soccer facilities and baseball/softball complex. Their support signals a strong vote of confidence in our athletic programs, but also representstheir investment in the quality of life at Rogers State.

As RSU begins its first year as a NCAA Division II candidate, this season marks our last as a member of the Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) and the NationalAssociation of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). We have appreciated the high priority these two organizations have placed on promoting healthy values, devel-oping strong character traits, and encouraging academic achievement among all student-athletes. These are core values for RSU’s programs, and we work dailyto impress them upon our student-athletes. We appreciate your interest in RSU athletics, and we look forward to another great season on the pitch. Go Hillcats!

Dr. Larry Rice

President, Rogers State University

Letter from the President

Greetings from the Hill and welcome to the fifth edition of Hillcat Soccer.

The RSU men’s and women’s soccer teams have enjoyed tremendous success since their inaugural seasons in 2007. Bothprograms have boasted double-digit win totals each and every year while also qualifying for the Sooner Athletic Conferencepostseason tournament.

Coach Larkin and his staff have built a solid foundation for the program while also emphasizing the importance of academ-ic success. Eleven members of the men’s and women’s soccer teams earned bachelor’s degrees last spring.

We are excited to dedicate $2.5 million worth of facility enhancements for the soccer programs this fall. During the off sea-son, Soldier Field was converted to artificial turf and a 9,000 square-foot fieldhouse for the soccer and cross country teams

was built in the north end zone of Soldier Field, adjacent to Blue Starr Drive. The facility features spacious locker rooms for the men’s and women’s soc-cer teams as well as the men’s and women’s cross country teams. Coaches’ offices, an athletic training room, and storage areas for athletics and intra-murals is located in the central area of the building. The facility also includes permanent concessions and restrooms for patrons and a paved concoursearea with sightlines to the field.

We are very proud of our soccer teams and excited to see what the future holds for these fledging programs. The outpouring of community support hasplayed a huge role in our early success and will remain vital to Hillcat Athletics as we strive to raise the bar once again in 2012-2013. Thank you for allyou do in support of the Hillcats!

Rogers State University: A Great Oklahoma Higher Education Success StoryRogers State University holds a historic position in the annals of Oklahoma higher education.

Since RSU was accredited as a four-year university in 2000, enrollment has increased by more than 75 percent, earningRSU the title of Oklahoma's fastest-growing regional university

A dynamic, progressive university with more than 4,600 students, RSU is widely recognized for its high-quality academicprograms, distance learning options and high-technology learning environment. RSU is the only public four-year, residen-tial university in the Tulsa metropolitan area.

RSU offers a wide variety of bachelor's and associate degrees. Innovative new bachelor's degrees include applied technol-ogy, environmental conservation, military history, sport management and game development.

Many students from northeast Oklahoma who plan to attend medical school complete their undergraduate studiesthrough RSU's program in medical/molecular biology. And RSU enjoys a statewide reputation for academic excellence inits nursing program.

Distinguished Academic Achievements RSU received continued accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Collegesand Schools without further required evaluation for 10 years - a rarity in higher education in Oklahoma and a majoraccomplishment achieved by few universities. This is truly a testament to the high academic quality of RSU.

RSU participates in The Washington Center Internship Program, a nationally recognized program placing students with pri-vate, public, and nonprofit organizations in Washington, D.C. Students participating in the semester-long internship earncollege credit while they gain "real world" experience within their field of interest and interact with influential leaders andpolicymakers. RSU is one of only three universities in Oklahoma to participate in this prestigious program.

Most RSU faculty members hold doctoral degrees or thehighest degrees available in their fields from esteemed insti-tutions across the nation, including Princeton University,Duke University and the University of Oklahoma.

The university’s Honors Program provides an atmospherewhere scholars can challenge themselves academicallyto maximize their college experience through specializedcourses, student/faculty joint research projects, and astrong emphasis on service learning in the community.

The President's Leadership Class (PLC), a four-year schol-arship program that fosters personal and professionaldevelopment, was designed for RSU students who havedemonstrated leadership abilities.

RSU also offers study abroad programs in Italy and Walesthrough the University's Studies-at-Large Program. Theinternational study programs provide students withopportunities to see the world, learn about other cul-tures, and enrich their educational experience.

Growth in Learning Facilities The Centennial Center, which opened in 2009, hasbecome the centerpiece of the main campus inClaremore. This two-level, 50,000-square-foot facilitycombines student development programs under oneroof, serves as a central location for students to study andsocialize and provides a focal point for the RSU campusin Claremore. The facility also offers ballrooms, confer-ence centers, and meeting rooms for the community.

A major expansion and renovation of Baird Hall on theClaremore campus was completed in 2010. The newBaird Hall has doubled in size and contains many of theleading-edge features associated with higher learningtoday, including classrooms equipped with SmartBoards, a performance studio, an art gallery and an out-door classroom for learning outdoors on sunny days.

RSU opened in September 2011 a new student apartmentcommunity that doubles the number of students living onthe main campus in Claremore. The $11.5 million projectaccommodates up to 255 students in a three-level facility, located across the street from the present university apart-ments. The new 87,118-square-foot complex is locatedjust west of Soldier Field.

A Brief History of RSURSU was founded in 1909 as Eastern University Preparatory School in Claremore. The school prepared the daughters andsons of area residents to attend college. Historic Preparatory Hall, known for its iconic gold dome, was the first buildingon the school's campus.

However, the school closed only a few years after it opened. Taking its place was the storied Oklahoma Military Academy(OMA), which operated on the Hill from 1919 to 1971.

Known as the “West Point of the Southwest,” OMA has an extensive register of graduates who became great leaders, bothin military and civilian life. More than 2,500 OMA graduates served in the Armed Forces of the United States during WorldWar II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. More than 100 graduates gave their lives in service to their country.

In 1971, OMA closed and Claremore Junior College opened on the Hill, serving more than 400 students. The junior col-lege grew rapidly in the 1970s, and by the time it was renamed Rogers State College in 1982, the institution boasted avariety of associate degree programs, distance learning capabilities, a new radio and television station and intercollegiateathletics.

In 1999, the Oklahoma Legislature renamed the institution Rogers State University and charged it with seeking accredita-tion as a four-year university. Accreditation at the baccalaureate level was granted in 2000.

Today, RSU is one of Oklahoma's fastest-growing universities, offering a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs tomore than 4,600 students on campuses in Claremore, Bartlesville, Pryor and online.

Academic DevelopmentThe Rogers State University Student-Athlete Academic Development (SAAD) program is designed to support Hillcat ath-letes as they strive for success in the classroom and reach their educational and career goals. The program provides aca-demic support such as advisement, subject tutors, and learning groups for each RSU student-athlete.

Study sessions are designed specifically for each athletic program, and student-athletes are given the opportunity to workwith tutors trained in their particular area of academic study. The goal of the SAAD program is to help all athletes growinto responsible adults as they become upperclassmen and take initiative to be personally responsible for their educationand their future.

The Student-Athlete Academic Development program, led by Dr. Brian Andrews, is there every step of the way for all ath-letes, to ensure they are pursuing a degree that will support their personal goals and prepare them for life after college.

Hillcat LIFE ProgramsThe Hillcat LIFE programs are designed to promote student-athletes’ success off the field or court. Each year, RSU intro-duces a variety of programs to enrich the college experience of its student-athletes, helping them avoid potential pitfallsand giving them information useful when making important life decisions. The following are some examples of Hillcat LIFEprograms:

Etiquette training: Student-athletes are instructed on proper dining habits, dating manners and courtesies. Each athleteis given a demonstration on the proper etiquette at formal meals.

Drug and Alcohol Counseling: Student-athletes are made aware of the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. They are givenexamples of athletes with promising futures who failed to reach their potential due to drug/alcohol abuse.

“It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time…” Seminar: This presentation attempts to enlighten student-athletes aboutthe existing legal realities associated with various acts they likely deem benign and provokes introspection that will leadto more careful decision making.

Hillcat LIFE Programs

u The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed in the Champions of Character program.

6

Nutrition Counseling: A nutritionist meets with student-athletes to discuss healthy meal choices and life styles. Athletesare given an overview of different types of foods and how they affect the human body.

Dangers of Gambling: Student-athletes are warned about the dangers of gambling addictions and also are warnedagainst gambling on collegiate athletics, which is a violation of NAIA and NCAA rules.

RSU athletics continues to expand its programs in order to provide a well-rounded education for all Hillcat athletes.

Champions of CharacterThe National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program isdesigned to instill an understanding of character values in sport, and provide practical tools for stu-dent-athletes, coaches and parents to use in modeling exemplary character traits.

Launched by the NAIA in 2000, the Champions of Character program addresses character issuesmore comprehensively than any other national program for youth. The program currently reacheshundreds of thousands of students on nearly 300 college and university campuses in NorthAmerica and extends into their surrounding communities.

The NAIA has been informally teaching character development through athletics for decades. The core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship are addressed comprehensively in the Champions ofCharacter program.

The NAIA Champions of Character program is an educational outreach initiative that emphasizes the tenets of characterand integrity, not only for NAIA college students, but for younger students, coaches and parents in our communities.

Coaches, parents, administrators and community partners all have a role in developing students of character. The NAIAChampions of Character program brings them training, guidelines and behavior models to create positive environmentsthat promote personal growth and fun sport activity.

OutlookThe 2012 season brings about several new faces to theRSU men’s soccer team as the Hillcats lost nine startersfrom a year ago. Head Soccer Coach Derek Larkin hasbrought in several newcomers to fill the void and cometogether with the returners. RSU made tremendousstrides during the 2011 season as they work to becomeone of the primer programs in the region.

“It’s always a challenge when you lose such great playersall at once,” Larkin said. “We lost a large number of kidslast year and it is an obstacle we had to overcome. Weworked very hard in the off season, bringing in a lot of newplayers and good talent. We are really, really excited aboutthe level of play. Some international flair and some verygood local players that have come together great. Sofar, they have been much better than we hadexpected, the talent is there it’s just a matter ofputting it all together. “

The Hillcats have pro-duced a 10 or morewin season over the pastfive years and they are looking to take thenext step as a program.

“Obviously our expectations are the nationaltournament and we are capable,” Larkin said.“We are just a game away every year. By ourconference only taking one team eachyear it’s a hurdle we have to over-come. We feel we have the talent todo it but a lot of things have to fallinto place for that to happen. Wehave to be peaking at the righttime and you have to have luckon your side but we hope thisis the year. The great thingabout the whole team is forthe first time in a long timewe have a lot of depth. Wehave 28 guys right now andevery one of them can con-tribute. It will be fun to seeit play out this year.”

Men’s Soccer OutlookForwardsWith the loss of seniors Henrique Sousa and T.J. Martin,Mohammad Shaban is the lone returner on the front line. The Tulsa, Okla. native had a standout freshman seasonwhere he led the Hillcat offense with eight goals and twoassists. Coach Larkin has brought in several new faceswho could be immediate contributors to the offense.

“The exciting thing is we didn’t really have ago-to-guy on the front line last year,” Larkinsaid. “This year Mohammad is comingback after a very big freshman year andwe have high expectations for him. Butnot only do we have high hopes forMohammad but also Division I transferfrom Jamaica Necas Collins who can addexplosiveness to our front line. DillionBeaird from Union High School is a verytalented player as a freshman. Wehave four or five really good playersthat I think will be really fun towatch.”

MidfieldersSenior Gary Arauz is the lonestarting midfielder left fromthe 2011 season. Heplayed in 18 games, start-ing in 16, controlling theRSU midfield.

“We are completely startingover in the midfield,” Larkin

said. “We’ve got Gary Arauz com-ing back who is a senior that transferred

from Oral Roberts last season and AdamHarmon was a freshman that started inthere last year. Matt Levenson, a transferfrom Northern Junior College, along withNiall Masterson who transferred in fromCoffeyville are really good players who willbe impact players in the midfield. We arereally excited about our midfielders this year. There are so many players that can help us sowe’re excited to see how it all plays out.”

DefendersBryan Jones returns for his senior campaign and willanchor the RSU defense. The Tulsa, Okla. product has beena mainstay for the Hillcats on the back line for the last twoseasons and Coach Larkin is expecting him to do the samein 2012.

“We are excited for Bryan Jones,” Larkin said. “It’s his sen-ior year and he looks better than he ever has. I think we’resurrounding him with really good players. He’s a seniorand we expect big things. He can definitely be an anchorback there. We have a lot of new, young players that wehope will be solid additions. Kaspars Kokis, who is a localplayer from Owasso, will step in and help us along withtransfers Adam Young and Kevin Howard. English center-back Mitchell Sowerby will also be an immediate impactplayer. We just have a whole plethora of backs that we feelwill help us.”

GoalkeepersWith the loss of goalkeeper Jeremy Swift, the Hillcats willput the bulk of the weight on senior Nathan Inger’s shoul-ders. Inger started in six of the eight contests he played induring his first season on the Hill in 2011. He transferredto RSU after playing at Northern Oklahoma College.Redshirt freshman Mitchell Penton will also be vying fortime in goal.

“It’ll be a battle between Nathan Inger and Mitchell Pentonfor the starting spot,” Larkin said. “Nate spent a lot of timein the off season playing in the professional developmentleague. He’s fit, he’s ready to go, and he’s true leader as asenior. We really feel like he’s the guy we can count on.We’re excited to see how he plays.”

ScheduleCoach Larkin has put together a challenging schedule forthe Hillcats as they prepare for the rigors of Sooner AthleticConference play. The Hillcats have three teams on theirschedule who are ranked in the top 10 of the NAIACoaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll.

“Our conference is so tough top to bottom,” Larkin said. But our non-conference schedule is just as tough. Our sec-ond road game of the season is against regional rivalOklahoma Wesleyan who received a lot of votes and isranked No. 23. We will play them along with some reallytough opponents like Southwestern Christian, FriendsUniversity, No.8 Hannibal LaGrange, and No. 10 MissouriValley. Our non-conference is strong enough that if we dowell we’ll be able to move into the top 25.”

Men’s Soccer OutlookThe Rogers State men’s soccer team was ranked No.6 inthe Sooner Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Coaches’Preseason Poll. Coach Larkin’s squad finished fifth in theleague in 2011, going 5-4-1 in the SAC with an 11-8-1overall record. The University of Science and Arts ofOklahoma was the unanimous No. 1 pick of the SACmen’s soccer coaches to win the 2012 conference title. The Drovers have won two of the last three league titlesand captured the 2011 crown by seven points.

Sophomore Tara Garrett made a big impact on the field lastseason but moving to the forward position will be a little dif-ferent look for her than a year ago. The team’s defensive play-er of the year might be making a move to the front line.Veteran Lauren Hager also returns to the lineup for her seniorcampaign.

“With the addition of some newcomers who can fill the voidon the back line, we are hoping to move Tara Garrett to thefront line,” Larkin said. “I think she can be an added spark toour offense. Redshirt freshman Rachel Coen could come inand contribute along with Lauren Hager who has scoredmany goals for us over the last three years. We have a lot ofgirls we can go to this year to score for us.”

MidfieldersRSU’s midfield will provide the teamwith a diverse set of talents that willmake them assets all over the field.

The youthful group features one seniorand should be a strength for years tocome. Blair Thomas started all 20 games inthe midfield for the Hillcats as a true fresh-

man in 2011. Junior Melissa Subu started in 13of the team’s 20 games last year and finishedsecond in goals scored, netting seven on theseason. Veronica Subu is the lone senior in themidfield, having started in all 20 games in

her first season on the Hill in 2011.

“Blair Thomas, MelissaSubu, and Veronica Subuwill all return in the mid-

field but we have several new-comers that will contribute as well,” Larkin said.“Freshman Carly Johnson is a very good player andcould contribute immediately along with RaquelChavez who redshirted last season after trans-ferring from Drury.”

Johnson was a four-year varsity letter-winner atBixby High School. As a senior she was the teamcaptain and named to the 6A All-State team.Chavez came to RSU after one season at DruryUniversity (Mo.). In high school she helpedBishop Kelly earn three state titles.

The Rogers State women’s soccer team looks to build uponthe program’s success from the 2011 season and make a runat both a Sooner Athletic Conference title and a bid to theNAIA Tournament in 2012. The Hillcats closed out last seasonwith a 10-7-3 overall record, and went 6-4-1 in SAC action.

Head Coach Derek Larkin and his staff are integrating ten newfaces with their talented returning veterans. The Hillcats return17 players from the squad that advanced to the SAC semifi-nals in 2011, losing just four starters.

“Anytime you have as many returners as we do your expecta-tions go up,” Larkin said. “We have a lot of good solidplayers coming back and with the addition of someof the new talent coming in it should be a greatyear. We have high expectations. We weresemifinalist in the conference last year andwith the players coming back and the newplayers great things can happen.”

The Hillcats have compiled 10 or morewins in a season in each of the last fiveyears and are looking to take the nextstep in 2012: a bid to the nationaltournament.

“Make no bones about it; wewant to be at the national tour-nament,” Larkin said. “That iswhere the bar is set. We havehad a team win the confer-ence championship, been tothe regional finals and wehave been just a game or twoaway, so the national tournament iswhat we are trying to achieve.”

ForwardsWith one season under her belt, sopho-more Jordan Beasley will be lookedupon by the Hillcat coaching staff tohave a big season. The Lafayette, La.native started in all 20 games for theHillcats as a freshman in 2011. Shescored a team-high eight goals, notchedtwo assists and was named second teamAll-Sooner Athletic Conference.

“We hope to see Jordan have a breakout sea-son,” Larkin said. “She had a solid freshmanyear, scoring several goals for us and she is avery talented player. We hope that with a lit-tle bit of maturity she will be able to producea little more for us.”

DefendersReturning a number of talented and experienced defensiveplayers from last year should prove to be beneficial for theHillcats.

“We have several upperclassman that we expect big thingsfrom on our back line this season,” Larkin said. “Jessica Turner,Lauren LaForce and Cierra Lohaus are all versed in our system.Jianna Piela is coming back from a great freshman year whereshe started every game. These players with the addition ofORU transfer Mikella Schexnider and Santiago CommunityCollege transfer Haley Wenlock are upperclassmen thatplayed at a high level and should be very solid on the backline.”

A transfer from Oral Roberts (Okla.), Schexnider had animpressive prep career at Charles Page High School in SandSprings, Okla. As a Sandite she was a three-time all-districtperformer while earning all-conference and all-state acco-lades her senior year.

GoalkeepersPossibly the most difficult position to replace will be in thenet. Coach Larkin must find someone to replace two-yearstarter and Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player ofthe Year, Chelsea McMullin.

“There is no doubt the loss of Chelsea McMullin is a hurdlethat we must overcome but we are extremely confident in theplayers that we have,” Larkin said. “Jordan Harris is fromClaremore and played at UMKC as a freshman. She playedseveral games last season and is going to be someone thatwe really look to lead this team and there is no doubt she can,she is an outstanding goalkeeper. Freshman Rebekah Meekswill also be in the mix to help Jordan out at the goalkeeperposition.”

SchedulePicked to finish fifth in the Sooner Athletic Conference by theleague’s coaches, Larkin has put together a challengingschedule for the Hillcats in 2012.

“To make the national tournament you need to play a reallygood non-conference schedule and we have really beefed upours this year,” Larkin said. “We are playing NCAA Division Iopponent ORU along with Oklahoma Wesleyan and Ottawawho are both receiving vote. Those games lead to our firsttwo conference games against Oklahoma City and USAOwho are both in the Top 25. Our first seven or eight gamesare going to be true battles for us.”

What Is A Hillcat? The university’s official mascot, the “Hillcat,” is a unique blueand red animal that serves as a source of campus pride andprovides a visual identity for the university’s Athletic, StudentActivities, and other school spirit programs. The Hillcat embod-ies the enthusiastic, determined and bold spirit of the universi-ty’s athletic programs and the pride our students and alumnifeel for the institution.

The “Hillcat” is a fictitious cousin of the bobcat, which is indige-nous to northeast Oklahoma. The “Hillcat” also draws its namefrom “College Hill,” a traditional nickname for RSU. The univer-sity sits atop a hill overlooking the city of Claremore.

The name “Hillcat” was conceived independently by a group ofRSU students in spring 2005, and approved by the UniversityMascot Committee, Student Government Association,President, and Administration.

Soldier Field: Home of Hillcat Soccer

Soldier Field is located in the heart of the RSU campus. The facility was originally constructed as a venue for the OklahomaMilitary Academy's football games. The field has been widened and resurfaced and a new digital scoreboard has beenadded in the south end zone. Soldier Field also features a large press box, lights, a public address system and stadiumseating for a great view of the action.

The durability of artificial turf will permit the university to utilize Soldier Field for athletic training andcompetition, intramural sports, and other student activities and community events.

The Soccer/Cross Country Fieldhouse for the RSU soccer and cross country teams began construction in October 2011 andwas completed prior to the 2012-13 academic year. The facility features spacious locker rooms for the men’s and women’s soccerteams as well as the men’s and women’s cross country teams. “I was looking for a university where I would be more than a face in the crowd. At Rogers State University, I’m a member of the Honors Program and the varsity cheerleading squad, all while pursuing my degree in medical/molecular biology. I don’t know for sure where I’ll be ten years from now but I do know I’ll be working in the medical !eld and my education will have prepared me to be successful. RSU has given me so many opportunities that I would not have gotten at other schools. For that, I’ll always be grateful.”
