On behalf of the Consejo Regulador de la Denominacion de Origen Calificada (DOCa) Rioja, the wineries of Rioja and the Vibrant Rioja U.s. campaign, we are grateful you have joined us today. Thank you for taking the time to experience a taste of our wonderful wine region!
We are proud to report that Rioja wine sales in the U.s. are still on the rise, despite the challenging economy. named “Wine Region of the Year” by snooth, the world’s largest wine website, Rioja is unmatched in offering wines at an incredible value, with both excellent aging potential and a broad diversity in style. THE RIOJA WINE REGION
nestled between the mountain ranges in north-central spain, surrounding the fertile course of the ebro River lies Rioja. Of all the great wine regions, Rioja is the most varied in terroir, offering an extraordinary range of wines. you’ll find luscious reds, fruity young wines, refreshing rosés and crisp whites. The wines of the alta, alavesa and Baja sub-regions match every style, taste and price-point.
Wine is food and great wines are ones that both highlight the taste of your meal and are enhanced by it. The rich, mature soil of Rioja gives birth to some of the finest grape varieties in the world, granting Rioja wines a sophisticated and subtle blend of flavors.

WINE TYPES: CLASSIFICATION AND SEALS OF AUTHENTICITY To simplify the wine buying experience, Rioja wines are clearly marked on every bottle with a “Denominación de Origen Calificada,” or DOCa seal. The DOCa seal ensures that each wine meets the strict qualifications required to be an authentic Rioja wine. Think of it as a guarantee of quality and authenticity. additionally, each label describes exactly what a wine lover can expect to taste, using Rioja’s classification system based on aging in oak barrels and bottles.
CosechaGenerally speaking, these are young wines in their first or second year, which maintain their primary freshness and fruitiness. This label is also used in a minority of wines which fall outside of the Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva categories. young Cosecha wines are generally great sipping wines, and also pair well with cheeses and simple pasta dishes. new wave or “alta expresión” Cosecha wines stand up nicely to richer meat-based dishes.
CrianzaThis category describes wines which are at least in their third year, having spent a minimum of 1 year in cask and several months in bottle. for white wines, the minimum cask aging period is 6 months. Red Crianza wines are typically a Riojan’s wine of choice on a daily basis. With a distinctive Tempranillo character of cherry and spice, these wines pair beautifully with most foods.
Reservaaged for a minimum of 3 years, with at least 1 year in cask, these wines are selected from the best vintages with excellent aging potential. for white wines, the minimum aging period is 2 years with at least 6 months in cask. Reserva wines are known for their deep and complex flavors – from cherries and wild berries to hints of vanilla. Reservas are exceptional when paired with braised dishes, grilled foods and game.
Gran Reservaselected wines from exceptional vintages, these fine wines have spent at least 2 years in oak casks and 3 years in bottle. for white wines, the minimum aging period is 4 years with at least 1 year in cask. made only in exceptional vintages, Gran Reserva wines offer an exquisite and intense depth of flavor, offering hints of cedar and wild berries. Roasted meats and game, and richly flavored stews are choice pairings for Gran Reservas.
