In just five years, Radford Softball has enjoyed a multitude of success under head coach Mickey Dean. During his ten-ure, the Highlanders have won over 200 contests, claimed their first two Big South Championships, reached an NCAA regional final and received national attention in NCAA polls on more than one occasion. And that is just a microscopic look into what the program has accomplished on the field.

With the continued success on the field, the Highlanders have been recognized for their hard work in the classroom and in the community. The past two seasons, Radford has been ranked in the top 50 in GPA amongst Division I pro-grams, including 25th in 2010.

Academics and community service have been a staple during Dean’s tenure. According to Dean, these are founda-tions for success, not only to achieve as a student-athlete at Radford, but for them to be well-rounded individual and prepared for the future once they graduate.

Stephanie Ballein, Chelsea & Coach Dean

Pre-CeremonyChelsea Kelley was named the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS win-ner for Softball. Awarded one of the most prestigious accolades in collegiate athletics, Chelsea was presented the trophy on July 2 at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in front of a sold out crowd during the Women’s College World Series.

Kelley, who has made an impact on the field, in the classroom and the com-munity during her four years wearing the red and white, is the first Radford and Big South student-athlete to earn this honor. She joins fellow Cave Spring High School alumnus and current Orlando Magic guard JJ Redick (Duke Men’s Basketball) as a recipient (2005-06) of this award.

It marked the fifth year of the award for softball and Kelley will have her name beside previous winners; Caitlin Lowe (Arizona), Angela Tincher (Virginia Tech), Stacy Nelson (Florida) and Charlotte Morgan (Alabama).

In addition to this prestigious honor, Chelsea was named the Big South’s 2010-11 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a NCAA Woman of the Year finalist.

Chelsea maintained a 3.94 GPA during her four years and graduated summa cum laude in May of 2011 with a degree in sports medicine.

On the field, the 2009 Big South Pitcher of the Year’s exploits played a major role in the Highlanders winning three consecutive regular-season Big South Championships as well as their first two tournament titles in 2009 and 2010. In doing so, the left twirler helped Radford reach its first two NCAA Tournaments, including the 2010 Regional final against Georgia.

Even though her career on the field is finished, Chelsea is continuing her edu-cation with the aspiration of working in sports rehab or spinal therapy. She is studying at the Jefferson College of Health Sciences as a member of Radford’s first physical therapy doctoral class.

The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I head coaches, national media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I softball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encour-ages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as lead-ers in their communities.

“I feel truly blessed to have been a part of

the Radford community for the last four years

and just want to thank everyone who has led

me to where I am today.”

Trophy Presentation

“I am very honored to be the recipient of the 2011 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The entire Lowe’s journey this year has been so great for me. This experience has allowed me to get out in the community and try to make a positive impact on those I meet.”

“Although Radford is in a smaller community, every person I have met during my collegiate career has positively influenced the person that I am today.”

hiGhlandeRS in The pRoS Over the past eight years, Radford Softball has seen significant improvement to its program both on and off the field with championships, NCAA appearances, national attention, record-book chart toppers and individual accomplishments. But none have been clearer in the past three years than the Highlanders making an impact professionally. In 2011, recent graduate Kristen Shifflett became the first Radford female student-athlete to be drafted by a professional organization. Three summers earlier, 2008 graduate Ashley Carlson was the first player in program history to compete profes-sionally in the summer of 2008. Both Highlanders played key roles in their rookie seasons helping the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro Fastpitch League (NPF) to a pair of NPF Championships. On March 21, 2011, Shifflett, a four-year starter at shortstop, was selected by Chicago with the 16th pick overall. Shifflett, who just completed her rookie season, came off the bench the majority of the season. Seeing time at second and shortstop, she registered two hits, scored four runs and stole two bases as the Bandits won their organization’s second Cowles Cup in four seasons. Shifflett made her first professional start at shortstop on June 11 in a Bandits victo-ry over the USSSA Pride and recorded her first hit, a fifth-inning single against Akron on June 26. A four-year starter at shortstop, Shifflett left Radford as its most prolific player in program history. The 2009-10 Big South Female Student-Athlete of the Year owns five career records (home runs, doubles, runs, total bases and hit by pitches), ranks second in four more (hits, batting, slugging and on base percentage and is in the top five in four more categories. She was tabbed the Big South and State Player of the Year in 2010 and was a first-team all-league selection three times. A two-time Big South Tournament MVP, Shifflett keyed Radford to its first two Big South Championships (2009 & 2010) and NCAA Tournament appearances, which included a NCAA Regional Finals appear-ance in 2010. Carlson, a four-year starter in the Highlander outfield, landed a roster spot on May 25, 2008 with the Bandits. Carlson, a two-year member of the Bandits, came off the bench as Chicago won its first NPF Championship in 2008. The Bandits made their magical run from worst to first, winning their final 15 games, culminating with a 6-4 victory over the Washington Glory in the championship game to win the Cowles Cup Trophy on Aug. 24. In her first professional start on June 9, Carlson helped the Bandits in a 14-1 victo-ry over the Akron Racers with three singles and a sacrifice bunt. She also scored a pair of runs and had an RBI. She finished her rookie season batting .286 (4-14) with 12 runs scored and an RBI. She tied for third on the team with eight stolen bases. Carlson, a two-time All-Big South performer, was a key factor in the success of Radford softball from 2005 to 2008. The Highlanders won 169 games during her time roaming the outfield. Carlson’s speed and quick hands contributed to her breaking both the career hits and steals records at Radford, while landing in the top five in the Big South in both those categories. She played 257 games, making 254 starts. She batted .313 with 255 hits, eight doubles, eight triples, 30 RBI and 139 runs scored. She also stole 98 career bases, leading the Big South in that category her final three seasons.

Since taking his spot in the coaches’ box in 2007, Mickey Dean has lifted Radford softball to successes never before seen by the program, or any Highlander team. Dean, whose championship pedigree extends from high school to the professional ranks, led the Highlanders to three straight Big South regular season titles, back-to-back tournament championships (2009 & 2010) as well as the program’s first-ever NCAA tournament win (2009) and NCAA Regional Final appearance (2010) for any Radford athletic team. The program’s remarkable year-by-year improvement under the three-time Big South (league record) and two-time VaSID State Coach of the Year culminated with a NCAA Regional runner-up finish in 2010, but was clearly a model of consistency: Since 2005, Radford is the winningest pro-gram (286-142) in the state of Virginia and from 2006-09, the Highlanders were just one of 10 Division I programs to win 40 contests each season. Under the guidance of the winningest coach in program history, Radford has won 207 games (three 40-plus win seasons), an average of 41 victo-

ries the past five years. In just five short seasons, the program has produced a NPF draft pick (Kristen Shifflett ‘11), Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award winner (Chelsea Kelley ‘11), Big South Woman of the Year (Hope Creasy ’10), Big South Female Student-Athlete of the Year, Big South Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, 12 Big South individual awards (4 Pitchers, 3 Coaches, 2 Players, 2 Freshmen, Scholar-Ath-lete), 12 all-region accolades (8 first team), 31 all-conference selections (22 first team) and 30 all-state honors (16 first team) On the field, the Highlanders have been dominant in Big South play over the past five seasons. Along with three straight regular season and two tournament championships (2009 & 2010), Radford has posted a 68-16 mark in regular season play, which included a league-record 21 consecutive conference series’ wins and an 18-game regular season winning streak over the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Add to that a 163-68 (.706) mark the past four seasons, which is the best four-year run for any Big South program. In 2011, Radford reached its fifth (fourth under Dean) Big South Championship game in the past six seasons. And even before the season got started, Radford earned preseason recognition never seen before. The High-landers received seven votes in the both national preseason polls and Kristen Shifflett was named to the USA Softball Preseason Player of the Year Top 50 Watchlist. Despite the runner-up finish, Radford posted 38 victories and set team marks in double plays (38) and steals (131). The victory total was the seventh straight season with 38-plus wins. Strong defense and aggressive base running have always been a staple under Dean. Since his arrival the Highlanders have recorded 114 doubles plays, including an average of 28 the past three seasons. The 38 twin-killings in 2011 were tops in the nation and tied for the eighth best season in NCAA history. The 131 thefts was the fifth best total in the NCAA as the Highlanders also set a new single-game mark with eight versus Toledo. Averaging 117 steals the past five years, Dean’s squads own four of the top five single-season marks in the program’s annals. 2010 saw the Highlanders advance all the way to the NCAA Regional final against host and even-tual national semifinalist Georgia. However, the day before Radford was to clash with Georgia, the Highlanders picked up their most important victory in program history when they came from behind and defeated then-No. 24 Florida State, 3-2. The victory over the Seminoles was the highest ranked team the Highlanders have defeated and gave them two wins over nationally ranked programs the past two seasons. Continuing the trend of record-breaking seasons in 2010, the Highlanders improved on school marks set in 2009 in home runs

(74), batting average (.318), slugging percentage (.541) and conference wins (16). The 74 long balls also broke Liberty’s Big South mark of 73 accomplished in 2007. They also set new records with 270 RBI and a .971 fielding percentage and defended their home turf. Radford recorded an undefeated 16-0 mark at RU Softball Field, the first perfect home season in program history. The squad also recorded the program’s highest RPI (40) in 2010, and earned their second recognition in national polls, which included a vote in the final 2010 USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll. After hosting and winning the 2009 Big South tournament, Dean and the Highlanders appeared in the tough Chapel Hill regional. Radford was edged by eventual national semifinalist Georgia, defeated Campbell and fell to the host and 15th-ranked Tar Heels. The 9-5 come-from-behind win over the Camels was the first NCAA team victory for a Radford University athletic program in school history. Radford’s showing in the Chapel Hill regional, along with its 41-15 (16-2, Big South) campaign in 2009 earned the Highlander coaching staff NFCA Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors. The success, however, extends beyond the box scores. The hard work in the classroom and the commu-nity has led to team and individual accomplishments. In the classroom the past two seasons, Radford has recorded top-50 GPAs amongst Division I programs, including 25th in 2010. The achievement culminated in 2011 when Chelsea Kelley was named the Lowes Senior CLASS Award winner for Softball, an award that embodies a student-athletes entire career on and off the field over their time with the program. To go along with Radford’s accolades, Dean also guided the Chicago Bandits of the National Pro FastPitch League to a 2008 championship, the first in franchise history. During his six years as the head coach, the Bandits claimed five NPF regular season championships. Along with coaching duties, he moved to the front office in 2009, serving at the organization’s general manager. A three-time NPF Manager of the Year, Dean became the sole manager of the Bandits in 2007 and after the 2008 championship he was named general manager. Prior to that, he along with co-manager Eugene Lenti led the Bandits to regular season championships in 2005 and 2006, including a 30-12 finish in 2006. The championships by the Bandits and Highlanders added to Dean’s stellar accomplishments. He has won a championship at the high school, junior college, NCAA, professional and Olympic levels. On the recruiting trail, Dean has reaped the benefits early on as his first two recruiting classes have made immediate impacts on the field. In 2008, Shannon Keefe was named the Big South and VaSID state Fresh-man of the Year and just a season later Leigh Godfrey garnered both those honors. Keefe was the first Highlander rookie to be recognized by the Big South since 1995. It has come full circle the past two seasons as Kristen Shifflett, a member of his first recruiting class, was named the 2010 Big South and VaSID State Player of the Year, a first for any Highlander since 1996. A sea-son later, Nichole Beall garnered Big South Co-Player of the Year honors. Shifflett would also go on to be the 2009-10 Big South Female Student-Athlete of the Year and a year later be the first Radford female to be drafted by a professional team (Chicago Bandits). Dean’s first recruiting class, which finished it’s career has produced 10 all-conference and nine all-state selections, two Big South Tournament MVP’s and five all-region honorees. Turning to the circle, Dean’s pitchers have been successful under his tutelage being named Big South Pitcher of the Year four times (first three seasons) and first team all-conference in all five. In 2009, Chelsea Kelley followed in Ashley Taylor’s footsteps as the conference’s top pitcher as well as being one of the first four Highlanders to be named a first team all-region selection. Most recently, Jackie Jenkins took home the honor in 2011. Following a strong coaching debut in 2007, Radford softball under Dean completed one of its most suc-cessful campaigns in school history in 2008. The Highlanders posted a school-best 46-15 mark that included a record 16-game winning streak. Those were just two of several marks obtained that season. Along with the wins and winning streak, new

records were set for winning percentage (.754), road/neutral site wins (34), hit by pitches (26) and road winning streak (eight games). As with 2007, several hitting records were set, only to be broken a season later. On a national scale, Radford received its first vote in a NCAA poll, ranking at 34th and 37th nationally. The Highlanders earned their first top-50 RPI (44th) ranking and finished the season there (49th) for the first time as well. They also garnered a Big South record seven first team all-conference selections and eight overall. Dean was hired as the program’s fifth head coach on Sept. 7, 2006. He joined Radford after two seasons as an assistant and associate head coach at Longwood University. In his first season, Dean guided the Highlanders to a then-school record 44-27 mark and second straight appearance in the Big South Championship game. Under his guidance, RU athletes earned six all-conference awards and four all-state accolades. Ashley Taylor was named Big South Pitcher of the Year and earned Southeast region honors, while becoming the first Highlander to obtain all-conference accolades as a pitcher and hitter. The Highlanders also broke several team and individual records in 2007. Dean’s pitchers struck out a school-record 492 batters, while the base runners swiped a then-program-best 128 bases. Several hitting records also fell, only to be broken again in 2008. Dean, who was on the staff of the Venezuelan National team from 2002-08, helped lead the squad to the Gold Medal at the Central American Olympic Games in his first season and a Bronze Medal at the 2006 Pan American Games in Guatemala. He was also on the coach-ing staff in 2003 when Venezuela played in the Olympic qualifying tournament. In 2008, Venezuela qualified for its first-ever Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Before coming to Radford, Dean became a member of Longwood’s coaching staff as an assistant in 2005 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2006. During his two sea-sons, he served as the pitching coach, recruiting coordinator and defense strategy coach. Prior to the Bandits, Dean spent two seasons (2002-2004) as an assistant coach at Indi-ana University, helping guide the Hoosiers to their first winning season since 1997, finishing 2004 with a 32-31 record. The 2004 pitching staff also ranks second all-time in strikeouts in a season at Indiana. Before joining the staff at Indiana, Dean was an assistant at the University of Akron from 2001-2002, where the Zips won the Mid-American Conference (East Division) Championship in 2002. While at Akron, he coached the 2002 MAC Pitcher of the Year. He was also an assistant coach for Lake City Community College (Fla.) (LCCC) in the spring of 2000, before being promoted to head coach in the fall of the same year. As head coach of LCCC, he led the team to a NJCAA National Championship with a 65-5 record, earning him NJCAA Tournament Coach of the Year. Dean began coaching softball in 1996, taking over the head coaching position at Orange County High School in Orange, Va. He was at the helm of the Hornets from 1996-1999, win-ning two Virginia AA State Titles (1998-99) and reaching the state semifinals in 1997. During his stint at OCHS, Dean was named Group AA Coach of the Year in 1998 and 1999 and co-coach of the year in 1997. He was also selected to coach in the 1999 and 2000 Virginia East-West All-Star Games. A 1987 graduate of Elon University, Dean holds a bachelor’s degree in public administra-tion. During his playing days, he was a four-year member of the baseball team which partici-pated in the NAIA College World Series in both 1985 and 1987. Dean and his wife Liz reside in Pulaski with their two children, Isaac and Caroline.

In August 2011, Maggie Johnson returned to the Radford softball pro-gram as an assistant coach. Johnson, who spent 2003-2008 as a High-lander assistant, returns to the New River Valley after a three-year tenure as Georgia Southern’s head softball coach. Johnson guided the Georgia Southern to an 87-80 mark and was the fastest coach to reach the 50-win plateau in program history as well as posting the highest winning percentage (.536) among GSU head coaches over the first two seasons. In three seasons, Johnson steered the Eagles to a 2009 Southern Conference Championship game appearance and a win at Georgia Tech that snapped the Yellow Jackets’ two-year home non-conference win-ning streak. Under her guidance, Nina Iduate set a Southern Conference batting average record (.450) to earn Player of the Year honors in 2010, Briana Streetmon garnered two league pitcher of the year accolades and this past season pitcher Allie Miles was tabbed freshman of the year.

Returning to the place where she began her collegiate coaching career, Johnson is familiar with Dean and Highlander program. She spent the final two seasons in the red and white under Dean after getting her start with former Radford and current St. John’s head coach Amy Kvilhaug. In her first stint with the Highlanders, the program recorded 200 wins, reached the 40-win plateau for the first time and broke the home run record in each of her final four seasons. As the team’s hitting coach, Radford slugged 40 long balls in 2006 for the first time in program history and also recorded the highest batting average in 12 seasons. Johnson was a four-year starter at first base for UNC Wilmington from 1997-2001 garnering all-conference honors in 2001. A 2001 graduate of UNCW, Johnson returned to school and earned her Master’s of Education in Counseling from Boston Uni-versity in 2003.

Loren Messick enters her third season as an assistant softball coach and first as Radford University’s recruiting coordinator. Messick, a former Roanoke College standout, joined Radford after spending the 2009 season as an assistant coach at her alma mater. She made a successful transition from player to coach, serving as the Maroons’ infield instructor and helping them to a 24-11 overall and 12-6 ODAC (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) record. Messick enjoyed a successful four-year career in a Maroon uniform. The four-time first team ODAC shortstop left Roanoke ranked in the top ten in sacrifice hits (2nd/41), batting (5th/.383), assists (5th/233), hits (7th/180) and runs (7th/135). A mainstay in the starting lineup, Messick was a key factor in Roanoke winning a pair of ODAC championships (2005 & 2006) and earning NCAA regional bids both seasons, reaching the finals in 2006. The Maroons, who finished ranked 21st nationally in 2005 and 2006, posted an impres-

sive 118-38 overall and 57-15 conference record during Messick’s four-year career. Messick is currently the ASA (Amateur Softball Association) Deputy JO Commissioner serving West Virginia and the Piedmont (Va.) regions. She has also served as an assistant coach with a pair of Virginia summer-club teams; the 2009 U-23 Renegades and the 2007 U-16 Northern Neck Rage.

Charisse Mariconda enters her second season on the Radford Softball coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. As a Highlander, Mariconda will assist in all areas, which includes working with the infielders and the day-to-day operations of the program. Mariconda, a former Virginia Tech standout, made the short trip down I-81 after spending the past five seasons in Blacksburg as a player and student assistant coach. Following a stellar playing career with the Hokies, the native of Hollywood, Fla. worked under Virginia Tech skipper Scot Thomas in 2009-10 while finishing up her coursework and graduating with a degree in sociology in May of 2010. As a four-year starter at third base and shortstop, Mari-conda was a model of consistency as she started all 249

games played from 2006-09. She batted .313 with 47 doubles, 17 home runs, eight triples, 115 runs, 136 RBI and stole 52 bases as she earned all-region honors three times. Along with the all-region accolades, she was a three-time All-ACC selection, including first-team honors in 2008 and 2009 as well as an all-state honoree in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Her 2008 breakout season, which saw her bat a team-best .340 with nine doubles, 37 RBI and 36 runs scored, helped the Hokies reach the Women’s College World Series, which included an upset of No. 4 seed Michigan in the Super Regionals. In addition to her collegiate accomplishments, Mariconda participated in the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Canada Cup in British Columbia as a member of the Puerto Rican National Team.

Located in the northeast corner of the Dedmon Center’s outdoor facilities, Radford Softball Field offers several new amenities with the most recent additions being made in 2009.

A backstop netting replaced the original fencing and a second batting cage located on the first base side are the featured upgrades.

Other improvements included a new outfield windscreen, along with lowering the fences to four feet in foul territory.

Along with the upgrades, RU Softball Field has been host to the 2009 and 2010 Jenny Finch Softball camp. This three-day event featured 400 campers and over 1,000 people descending on Radford’s softball facilities.

In the summer and fall of 2007, new grass sod was laid out in foul territory. With that, a new irrigation system was installed to cover the expanded area of grass.

Renovations on the field started prior to the 2004 season when covered dugouts that include a heating system were built.

Upgrades prior to the 2006 season included a working press box and an improve-ment in the fan seating areas, moving the primary grandstand area directly behind home plate.

These improvements allowed the Highlanders to host their first Big South Championship at RU Softball field in 2006 as well as 2009. Radford is also the host for this season’s 2012 tournament.

In addition to the conference tournaments, the Highlanders were able to show off their home field when they welcomed ESPNU on April 19, 2009 for a nationally televised contest against Winthrop. Radford upended the Eagles, 9-4, in front of a national audience and are a perfect 4-0 on the network.

The newest addition to the list of amenities for the Highlander softball team is an indoor batting and pitching facility that allows Radford to practice year-round.

The facility includes six dedicated batting cages, with the necessary equipment and amenities for either live pitching or machine pitching. Located adjacent to cam-pus, the indoor facility can serve the Radford softball team year-round, anytime the weather restricts outdoor practice. 2010 Jenny Finch Softball Camp

lSince its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a

competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, in-novative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and qual-ity athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.”

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta Presi-dent George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Caro-lina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national post-season events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the third Commissioner, and in his 14 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s vision as a distinctive athletic Confer-ence committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms.

In the last 16 years, the Big South has experienced monumental growth and suc-cess in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had three individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rank-

ings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selec-tion, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basket-ball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Champion-ship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – the highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event.

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.

Penelope Ward Kyle became Radford University’s sixth, and first female, president when she took office on June 1, 2005. She came to RU with more than 30 years of experience in state government, the corporate and legal worlds, and higher education.

Upon assuming the presidency, President Kyle im-mediately focused on leading the university’s initiative to become one of the top 50 masters universities in the nation.

The Radford University strategic plan “7-17”, com-pleted in 2007 at her direction, identifies four strategic directives -- the investment in people, programs, global and local society and the future of Radford University.

Under President Kyle’s leadership, the univer-sity also added its first doctoral program with an emphasis in rural mental health and launched an initiative to grow graduate college student enrollment by offering addi-tional doctoral and masters level programs. She hired the university’s first provost and created two new vice presidential areas of responsibility, Information Technology and University Relations.

The Radford University Board of Visitors, at President Kyle’s request, has increased its membership by four positions to provide an opportunity for more diversity and lead-ership innovation within the governing body.

A native of southwest Virginia, President Kyle is a product of the Galax public schools system. She graduated from Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina and did her postgraduate studies in English at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Since being introduced as Radford University’s Director of Athletics in the fall of 2007, Radford native Robert Line-burg has helped usher in a new era of Highlander athletics, marked by unprec-edented on-and off-field improvements and successes.

In his short time with the department, Lineburg has been the catalyst for a number of changes, particularly in areas such as facilities, personnel and strategic planning.

His most visible influences to date have been on the Dedmon Center and Radford University’s new 700-seat base-ball stadium.

Beginning in the spring of 2008, the Dedmon Center, the center-piece of Highlander athletics, underwent transformations to the arena, including a new steel-supported roof, a new basketball floor, renovated athletic offices, a new-look natatorium, and improved athletic locker, training, and medical facilities.

Along with the initial upgrades to the Dedmon Center, an improved state-of-the-art strength and conditioning room, new ticket office and Learning Enhancement Center (LEC), which houses student-athlete academic support, were completed/added in 2009.

In 2010, facility upgrades included a new high-tech videoboard / sound system to the Dedmon Center as well as a new playing surface / irrigation system and dugouts to the Radford University Baseball Field.

This past spring, Radford transformed its baseball program in April of 2011 by opening a brand-new stadium and making the first significant adjustment to its home park since opening in 1986. For the first time ever, the Highlanders have the capability to host night games. The sta-dium features lighting standards that meet the requirements of NCAA Regional host sites.

In June, Robert Lineburg introduced Mike Jones as Radford Univer-sity’s 7th head men’s basketball coach.

Lineburg has also overseen the hires of six new head coaches as well as seven new athletic administrators.

As a result of the changes, Radford achieved a banner year in 2008-09: women’s soccer, men’s basketball, men’s tennis and softball claimed Big South conference crowns and advanced to NCAA Tourna-ment play. Women’s soccer advanced to its fourth tournament, men’s basketball won the Big South regular-season and tournament title to advance to the NCAAs for the first time since 1998, men’s tennis made its third-straight appearance, and softball appeared for the first time and won Radford’s first-ever NCAA tournament game in any sport.

Lineburg and the Highlanders backed their success in 2008-09 with a men’s tennis and softball Big South regular season title in 2009-10. Mickey Dean’s softball team went on to win their second straight confer-ence tournament crown before advancing to the Athens Regional final with two more NCAA Tournament victories.

The successes on the field continued in 2010-11 as Radford cap-

tured three more Big South titles. Women’s soccer and softball claimed regular season crowns, while men’s tennis advanced to the NCAA Tour-nament with their fourth league tournament championship in five years.

Along with their competitive success, the Highlanders have defined the true meaning of “student-athlete” during Lineburg’s tenure. For the second consecutive year, Radford led all Big South institutions by placing 58.3 percent of its student-athletes on the conference’s Presi-dential Honor Roll. In 2008-09, the Highlanders had 57.9 percent of their students on the list.

He and his staff have also been responsible for creating a five-year strategic plan for the Radford athletic department and building an athlet-ics facilities master plan. Additional achievements include ushering in a new athletics Internet site, and helping implement a new ticket system. Lineburg and his staff have also hosted top-level competition, with five Big South championships taking place on the Radford campus from 2008-11.

In addition to making an impact on Radford athletics, Lineburg is also involved in a number of different organizations and committees. He is the chairman of the Big South Conference Subcommittee on Basketball Im-provement, a member of the Big South ad-hoc Committee on Basketball Issues, a member of the selection committee to select Radford Univer-sity’s Vice President for Advancement, and most recently, was selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Issues Committee

Prior to becoming Radford’s third Director of Athletics, Lineburg’s cor-porate knowledge was groomed as a marketing associate with Peloton Real Estate Partners in Dallas, Texas.

Along with his business experience, Lineburg spent 15 seasons as a college basketball coach, including time as Southern Methodist’s (Dallas, Texas) interim head coach. Prior to serving as the Mustangs interim head coach, Lineburg spent eight years as an assistant coach at SMU. Fol-lowing his interim tenure, he served two more seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Methodist.

Lineburg’s coaching resume also includes assistant coaching positions with the men’s basketball programs at James Madison University and Emory & Henry College, as well as with the Dallas Mavericks summer league team. His coaching experience also took him through the Big South, as he spent time on the sideline at UNC Greensboro.

A 1991 graduate of Roanoke College, Lineburg started his collegiate basketball career as a Radford Highlander, where he was a two-year letterman before transferring to nearby Roanoke College to play his final two years.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in political science with a minor in history. In 1995, he received a Master’s Degree in education from Virginia Tech, where he was also a graduate assistant on the men’s basketball staff.

Lineburg is the son of retired Radford High School football coach and athletic director Norman Lineburg and the brother of Dr. Mark Lineburg, the Superintendent of Bristol City Schools, Paul Lineburg, the Assistant Principal at William Byrd H.S. and Wayne Lineburg, who is the interim head football coach at the University of Richmond.

He is married to the former Mary Parish, also a native of Radford. Highlander Athletics
