.B2B. - PLASTIC PROCESSING PLANTDEGREE PROJECT - PROFESSOR ADRIAN LUCHINI

B2B (Bottle to Bottle Recycling) is a recyclable plas-tic processing plant. Located adjacent to a barge port, railway, and highway along the waterfront in St. Louis, B2B is poised to maximize the most effi cent methods for receiving and ship-ping raw material for the industry. The plant buildings follow along the fl uid path of people, material, vehicle and river from point of entry to exit. The building tectonic celebrates indus-try and infrastructure. On the other hand, like the Mississippi River which responds to the geology beneath it by cutting a sinuous path in the earth, the roofscape and plan celebrate the adaptive irregularity of nature by transforming to the needs of the program. At one point the structure even lifts off the ground to span overtop the levee wall.

HOW DO DIFFERENT MODES OF TRANS-PORT COMPARE IN THEIR USE OF FUEL?

River Barges are by far the most efficient.

WHAT IF ALL MODES OF TRANSPORT COULD BE MADE AVAILABLE?THERE ARE SPOTS NORTH & SOUTH OF THE ARCH THAT ACCESS TO TRAIN, RIVER BARGE,LOCAL ROADS, AND INTERSTATE HIGHWAY.

. WHERE DOES YOUR RECYCLING GO.After a brief trial period the City of St. Louis has decided to move forward with a Single Stream Recycling Program. In addition to a the feeling of goodwill that comes from an eff ort that works toward more sustainable practices, the City of St. Louis has been able to increase revenue by charging for reycling service while avoiding the cost for “tipping” at landfi lls.

45

Single Stream Recycling takes all the eff ort out of recycling. The consumer places all of their recyclables into a single bin or takes their recyclables to a collections center. There is no need to separate. A recycling truck comes and collects the recyclables and brings them to Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The MRF is responsible for separating all of the recyclables from one another. Althought most everything is recyclable the city of St. Louis accepts only bottled glass, steel cans, aluminum cans, card-board, newspaper & scrap paper, and plastics #1-5 & 7.

RIVER’S EDGE URBAN STRATEGY

INHABITING THE SKY

When considering the water as an edge another edge needs to be addressed the sky. Spanning the sky is not possible but reaching into and inhabiting it is possible. This architecture is diff using the hard edge of the city, the edge is beginning to feel more like a city fringe.

RIVER CITY ECOLOGY analyzed the interaction between nature and industry on the St. Louis riverfront. The analysis informed my decision to select a site and program that endorsed symbioitic contact between the river and the city. A design strategy emphasized a weaving of discrete programmatic elements. The primary program is a plastics processing plant. The site is adjacent to the river south of the McKinley bridge. Proximity to industry trans-port and resources and accessibility to the river were important for site selection.

Plan of Visitor Center Program

A (above) | Entry Procession

The TALLGRASS RETREAT consists of lodging and a visitor center for the National Tallgrass Prairie Preserve in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Emphasis was placed on the continuance of the National Park tradition of a lodge as a park amenity that enriches the park experience. The project took two focuses, fi rst, using the public program to draw visitors out into the prairie to explore its natural beauty, the second, was to give visitors staying overnight a relaxing stay that capitalizes on the quiet vastness of the prairie. Simultaneously, an ecological responsibility to the preserve motivated a focus on sustainability in the developemnt of the project.

B

ATALLGRASS RETREAT

This site was selected because it is adjacent to the preserve; It is located beside an existing road therefore it does not require creating a road and developing new infrastructure; It is remote; south facing; the quickest route to the site is through Strongy City and then throught the preserve, rather than coming from the West and avoiding the small towns.

city WORKSHOP was designed for a neglected infi ll site near the old city center of São Paulo, Brazil. The purpose was to create a new program that would give back more than it took from the city. The project introduced a sustainable wood workshop and educational facilities for promoting resource management in the Mata Atlântica to an area of the city with few public amenities. Pocket parks within the campus bring tropical greenspace back into the uban landscape. All ar-chitectural drawings were produced with Revit Architecture 2010.

318 Studio was driven by climate and form making studies. The complex ge-ometry was developed from observations of portabello mushrooms gills. The result-ing geometry was employed to passively re-spond to solar radiation and prevailing winds diff erently in the summer and the winter.

The program was a research facility. The site was a steep hill in the Tyson Research Center.
