2012 POSITION PREVIEWS

With a bevy of young, talented players joining an experienced core, Ohio Dominican’s volleyball team looks poised to continue its develop-ment from 2011 as the Panthers enter year three of GLIAC and Division II competition.ODU’s season begins Friday at 4:30 p.m. as the Panthers take on Caldwell (N.J.) in the Gannon Invitational, the fi rst of three matches for the squad this weekend. Head coach Sandy Rowley, now in her 24th season guiding Ohio Do-minican, has some challenges to face in replacing all-conference players Rachel Billing and Stacy Rogg, but believes the Panthers will be up to the task this fall. “The biggest things we’ve noticed is that we’re faster and more athletic than we have been in the past,” she said. “The upperclassmen have re-ally stepped up their work off the fl oor and came back in the best shape we’ve ever seen. The recruits we’ve brought in are tall and fast and ready to play right away. They’ve played at a higher level and have a quicker learning curve.” Despite fi nishing the 2011 season with a 12-17 record (5-14 GLIAC), the Panthers’ play on the court be-lied a team that could have fi nished with more victories. ODU scored 130 more points than its opponents and averaged more kills per set (12.38 to 11.53) than its opposition. The Pan-thers’ .209 attack percentage also ranked third in the GLIAC. The biggest question mark for ODU this year will be in its ball con-trol and serve receive, as those were the two areas that Billing and Rogg handled almost exclusively in the past.“Those are two huge positions for us,” Rowley said. “We have a lot of players that are competing to fi ll those roles, though, and we’ll be able to put our best six players out on the fl oor.” Ohio Dominican played several close matches against some of the top competition in the GLIAC last season, notably a fi ve-set loss against nationally ranked Hillsdale, and the Panthers have one goal in mind en-tering the 2012 campaign. “We think we have enough talent to compete for a GLIAC Tournament bid,” Rowley said. “This is our third year and we’re no longer the new kids on the block. We’re seasoned now and have a great chance to get into the tournament.”

SENIORS ODU returns a trio of seniors in Kristy Birkemeier (Columbus Grove, Ohio), Shannon Nadler (Leipsic, Ohio) and Meredith Shifl ey (Galion, Ohio). Birkemeier was fourth on the team with 190 kills in 2011, and Shi-fl ey, a transfer last year, played in 94 sets, registering 487 assists as one of the team’s setters. Nadler has plenty of experience herself as the middle hitter has appeared in 206 career sets. “This a good group of leaders for us,” Rowley said. “They are tremen-

dous role models who give everything they can. Shannon works hard for us every day, as does Meredith. Kristy is a competitor who can have a role for us offensively and defensively.”

JUNIORS The Panthers have three juniors with a lot of experience returning to the squad, with Bailey Barker (Muncie, Ind.), Emily Post (St. Henry, Ohio) and Tara Winner (Versailles, Ohio) back on the team this season. Post, a middle hitter, was amongst the league’s best with her 95 blocks.

Winner ranked second on the team with 235 kills and a .265 hitting percentage, while Barker appeared in 54 sets last season. “We’re going to move Bailey from the outside to a defensive specialist role this season,” Rowley said. “We’re excited to have Emily back and her offense is real-ly coming around to match her blocking. Tara has been rehabbing from an injury but she is a proven player for us over the past few years.”

SOPHOMORES A quartet of second-year players all gained valuable experience on the fl oor last season for ODU and will be ex-pected to step up again in their sopho-more campaign. Caitlin Kusan (Wester-ville, Ohio), Brianna Reder (Maineville, Ohio), Lauren Rindler (Rossburg, Ohio) and Kelsey Snyder (Macomb, Mich.) each saw time and their growth will be key this season. Kusan fi nished amongst the confer-ence’s best in hitting percentage with her .311 clip as ODU’s top middle hitter. She also tallied a team-high 95 blocks. Reder came on strong to tally 145 kills, while Snyder led the team with 636 as-sists. Despite her limited playing time, Rindler was a bright spot on defense, tallying 44 digs in 15 sets. “Caitlin in the middle is extremely athletic and offensively gifted,” Rowley said. “Kelsey brings a lot of experience as a setter and has really improved. Bri-anna can be a force for us on the right side and has worked extremely hard. Lauren is a great athlete who competes hard and we’ve seen a lot of improve-ment from her as well.”

FRESHMEN The Panthers brought in six freshmen to the squad, a group that is one of the most talented classes to walk into Alumni Hall. The question is how quickly they will get up to speed and adjust to playing in one of the country’s toughest conferences. “This is a really good group of players we brought in,” Rowley said. “They have a chance to make an immediate impact, and some might start for us right away. They have a lot of volleyball savvy and know how to play the game.”

Sandy RowleyHead Coach

A former Ohio Dominican student, assistant coach, and now in her 24th season as head coach of the Panther volleyball team, Sandy Rowley embodies the Panther persona.

Rowley has been a fi xture in the Panther athletic department for more than 25 years. As part of the Panthers’ transition to the NCAA Division II, Rowley also serves as the Senior Women’s Administrator and Assistant Athletic Director for the ODU Athletic Department. As the SWA, Rowley will oversee the Panther Student Athletic Advisor Committee (SAAC) along with other administrative duties.

Since her fi rst season in 1989, Rowley has been a staple on the Panther bench and in the ODU community. A friendly and demanding coach, Rowley has guided the Panthers to 13 winning seasons, including seven straight from 1994-2000, and 18 conference tournament appearances. In 1995, Rowley directed ODU to a program-record 35 victories, including 18 in conference play, which is also a program record. The team has won at least 20 matches 12 times during her tenure, including two of the past three years.

Rowley’s tremendous dedication and hard work of developing young student-athletes over the years culminated with her 400th win on Oct. 4, 2008, as the Panthers defeated Grace College, 3-1, in Winona Lake, Indiana.

In her 23 seasons at the helm of the ODU volleyball team, Rowley has coached 17 NAIA Academic All-Americans, 36 All-Conference Academic performers, 67 All-Conference selections and 15 All-Freshman Team players. Her dedication to the collegiate athlete has been proven time-and-time again on and off the court.

Rowley and her husband Jeff live in New Albany, Ohio, with their three daughters, Lyndsay, Jennifer and Kelsey.

David Franklin enters his second season as an assistant coach with Ohio Dominican’s volleyball team.

Franklin spent six years as a high school varsity coach, directing Lima Cen-tral Catholic to the Division III state title in 2007, the fi rst in program his-tory. In 2008, he led the Thunderbirds to a No. 1 ranking in the state and won the regional championship while being voted the Division III State Coach of the Year by the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association.

In his six-year varsity coaching career, Franklin compiled a 118-35 career record, was named conference coach of the year three times and captured four district crowns in addition to the state and regional championships. Franklin also helped guide the Team Atlantis 17 National Team to a third-place effort at Nationals in the National Division.

Franklin played volleyball at the University of Findlay for four seasons and left as the career hitting percentage leader in school history. He was named to the 2004 Golden Dome All-Tournament Team at Rutgers Univer-sity.

A native of Kettering, Ohio, Franklin resides in Westerville with his wife Alisa. Franklin is pursuing his master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Dayton.

COACHES

Lyndsay Rowley enters her third season with the ODU volleyball program, joining her mother, head coach Sandy Rowley, on the bench for the up-coming season.

A recent graduate from High Point University in North Carolina, Rowley brings four years of valuable NCAA Division I volleyball experience and insight to ODU. At HPU, Rowley was a four-year letterwinner for the Pan-thers squad as a defensive specialist and was named team captain her senior year.

Despite the rigors of being a Division I athlete, Rowley double majored at HPU, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications and a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing.

Rowley attended New Albany High School before HPU. She was a four-year member of both the volleyball and basketball teams and was also a mem-ber of the Eagles track team for two seasons.

Rowley will work at obtaining her Master of Business Administration while at ODU.

University OverviewOhio Dominican University is an accredited four-year liberal arts institution, founded in 1911 in the Catholic and Dominican traditions. The university has more than 3,100 students and offers undergraduate degrees in over 50 ma-jors as well as six graduate degree programs. Ohio Dominican uses a student-centered approach, with a commitment to quality teaching and learning and a number of academic programs of distinction.

Academics are at the heart of everything done at Ohio Dominican University. Institutions of higher learning exist to provide education for their students, and that education starts in the classroom. It continues, of course, on athletic fi elds and in residence halls, in rehearsals and clubs, in the library and the lab, but it begins with the relationship between students and their instruc-tors.

ODU’s mission is grounded in our identity as a Catholic and Dominican liberal arts institution. The University’s motto - “To contemplate truth and share the fruits of that contemplation with others” - serves as our guiding principle of teaching and learning. ODU’s core curriculum, taken by all students, focuses on seven learning outcomes that collectively identify the institution’s expec-tations for what all students will be able to be and do as Ohio Dominican graduates. Additionally, students complete a sequence of courses in one of

50 undergraduate major areas of study including those in the arts, sciences, and professions.

Led by a talented faculty dedicated to excellence in teaching and committed to helping students learn, ODU’s student engagement model focuses on serv-ing the whole student through personal attention and assistance in collabo-ration with the institution’s Division of Student Development. Ohio Dominican is fully accredited and offers academic programs at the baccalaureate and masters degree levels through fi ve divisions: Arts and Letters; Social and Behavioral Sciences; Mathematics, Computer and Natural Sciences; Business; and Education.

The University is signifi cantly expanding the level of on-campus student ex-tracurricular activities and improving residential life. At the same time, Ohio Dominican has expanded its extracurricular offerings, providing a greater number of on-campus activities for both residential and commuter students. A central focus has been the addition of a new Student Center and expansion of athletic programs, which attract student athletes and non-athletes alike, and foster alumni participation.

Student organizations and activities at ODU offer events and activities that re-late to areas of academic interest, student government, artistic performance, multicultural identity, media, athletic, social, honorary, religious and service organizations. Ohio Dominican student activities and events are open to all students.

Over the past 10 years, Ohio Dominican has followed an aggressive expansion plan for its facilities which include three new residence halls; additional sports and recreation facilities; development of Sunbury Road as a gateway to the campus; the new Bishop James A Griffi n Student Center and a new science facility, Battelle Hall.

The 2010 - 2011 academic year was a special time for the institution as its students, faculty, staff, alumni, community leaders and friends celebrated the University’s Centennial anniversary.

The Centennial theme, A Century of Transforming Lives, refl ects ODU’s Do-minican heritage, history and tradition. This celebration encourages the University community to refl ect upon the transformative effect that Ohio Dominican has had on the lives its faculty, students, alumni, staff and friends.

Ohio Dominican is focused on becoming the preeminent Catholic institution of higher learning, providing quality programs in both the liberal arts and the professions, committed to the fundamental value of liberal education, and deeply rooted in its Dominican tradition. Ohio Dominican is known for its student-centered and innovative approaches to teaching and learning; its commitment to excellence in academic and co-curricular programs; its com-mitment to service and community responsibility; its outstanding campus facilities and resources; its global outreach in response to educational needs; and its reputation for distinction in values-based higher education.

Panther FieldFootball, Men’s and Women’s Soccer

Ohio Dominican University continues to demonstrate progressive improvement to its athletic facilities with the addition of Panther Field. Built in 2004, our newest athletic facility is home to our football team and men’s and women’s soccer teams as well as our club level lacrosse team. To withstand the wear and tear of constant use, Panther Field is equipped with the latest in artifi cial surfaces, SprinTurf®. The fi eld has a seating capacity of 1,750 with a 42-foot press box located at the top of the home bleachers. Recent additions to Panther Field include bleachers on the guest side of the fi eld with a capacity of 500 and a building that houses a ticket offi ce, concession stand and restrooms. Lights were also recently added to the facility, an addition that makes Panther Field one of the fi ner facilities of its size in the Midwest. The new facility replaced ODU’s former natural grass soccer complex and is located next to Alumni Hall on the west side of campus.

Alumni HallMen’s and Women’s Basketball, Volleyball

Opened in 1989, Alumni Hall has a seating capacity of 3,000 and is the home of the women’s volleyball and the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Alumni Hall was given a much needed renovation and expansion in 2009-10. One full-length basketball court was added, the hardwood was resurfaced, and bleach-ers were added to the far side of the court.

After the renovation all of the coaches now have an offi ce on the second fl oor of Alumni. There are also several rooms that coaches may utilize to review game tape, hold team meetings and meet with future and current Panthers. Some of the other amenities in Alumni Hall are four locker rooms, the Black and Gold Room, a spacious conference room, a refurbished weight room that is available to both students and student-athletes, and an athletic training room. Alumni Hall has the capability of accommodating three regulation size basketball and volleyball courts.

Panther CourtsMen’s and Women’s Tennis

Also on the grounds of the Ohio Dominican Sports Complex west side location are six regulation size tennis courts complete with lights. The courts were recently resurfaced with a blue Latex-ite® coating that resembles the courts that host the U.S. Open Championship. The tennis courts are enclosed with a green chain link fence to accommodate the Panther men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Panther Valley/Frank Damian FieldBaseball

First time visitors are pleasantly surprised by the hidden beauty of Panther Val-ley as they descend upon ODU’s prized baseball diamond. Sunken well below street-level and masked by plentiful trees, the only evidence of what awaits below is the echoing “ping” of aluminum bats meeting baseballs. The fi eld is complete with a batting cage, home bullpen beyond the left fi eld line and a visitor bullpen along the right fi eld line. A recent addition to Panther Valley is a state-of-the-art scoreboard complete graphics and animatronics. Panther

Valley has developed year-by-year to the point that it is now considered one of the fi nest college baseball facilities in the country.

Panther Softball Field

Over the years Panther Softball Field has evolved into one of the nicest facili-ties in the state of Ohio. The brick dust fi eld is routinely praised by Panther opponents as the epitome of what a fi eld should be. With its dimensions of 210 to the corners and 225 to straight away center, this softball complex features enclosed dugouts, a scoreboard, bullpens beyond the left fi eld line, and an underground irrigation system.

Hitting Facility

Located next to the softball fi eld is the hitting facility for both the baseball and softball teams. The hitting facility provides a place for both teams to refi ne their skills through the harsh Central Ohio weather. With the retractable nets, the hitting facility contains three batting cages complete with pitching mounds and pitching machines.

Panther Training Facility

Along with the addition of the new stadium in 2004, the Panthers added a 7,500 square foot training facility west of the main parking lot. The facility is equipped with the latest in hammer strength weight training equipment and ODU’s second athletic training room. Offi ces for athletic training personal are also located in the new facility.

Cumberland Trail Golf Club

The Panthers are fortunate to call Cumberland Trail Golf Club their home. The course, designed by Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry, opened in 1999 and measures up to 7,205 yards from the back tees. Known for its excellent con-ditioning and diffi cult design, Cumberland Trail ranks fourth in Central Ohio among public golf courses, according to Mid Ohio Golfer, and received 3.5 stars from Golf Digest. The greens at Cumberland Trail are considered by many to be the fi nest in the Columbus area and challenge even the best putters. The ODU golf team has unlimited access to the facility which includes a driving range and large practice green.

Golf Practice Facilities

ODU golfers have the ability to practice year round at one of two practice facili-ties. Bridgeview Driving Range, located just 6 minutes from campus, serves as the outdoor practice facility during the Spring and Fall Grass tees, a large putting green, and an excellent short game practice area are just a few of the benefi ts available to our teams.

When the weather turns cold, ODU players practice at “The Dome”, the largest indoor driving range in Ohio. “The Dome” measures a full 90 yards from front to back and the indoor temperature is kept around 60 degrees. It provides the perfect environment for the golfers to improve during the cold winter months.
