PAGE 2 NOBLE STREET FESTIVAL APRIL, 2012

The Northeast Alabama Bicycle Association (NEABA) is pleased to again bring you the Noble Street Festival and Cheaha Challenge, April 21 and 22. We are an IMBA/SORBA club comprised of individuals and families who are passionate about active lifestyles and promoting cycling and the outdoors. We not only produce this weekend’s events, but we also are working to bring mountain bike trails to Coldwater Mountain. Visit us at www.neaba.net for more information and to join our organization. Your membership supports our efforts!

We not only welcome locals to the events, but we welcome several thousand out of town guests, as well.More than 500 competitors from across the U.S. and several foreign countries will race in the Sunny King Criterium on Saturday April 21. Sunday, April 22 will feature the Cheaha Challenge presented by Wells Fargo Advisors—a ride that begins in Piedmont and traverses

Cheaha Mountain, showcasing our area’s natural beauty. It is for recreational cyclists of all ages and abilities and attracts more than 600 participants from over 25 states.Sunday will also feature the 3nd Annual Foothills Classic Road Race, a competitive long distance race staged in Piedmont that will attract an additional 350 cyclists from across the country. Most all of these cyclists bring other travelers with them to our community, thereby boosting tourism and providing us the opportunity to show our Southern hospitality! The Anniston Orthopedics YMCA 5K will kick things off early Saturday morning, hosting a run for kids and adults on a course that will take participants on a tour of downtown Anniston.

In addition to the bike and running races, don’t miss the great food in the Red Diamond Restaurant Tour. Serving from tents and dining tables in the street, twelve restaurants will

offer lunch and dinner from 11am to 8pm. The Scion KidZone is larger this year than in any of the previous 9 years and this year includes an amazing “two-wheeled stunt show” that Wig’s Wheels is bringing you throughout the day. Check out the schedule for attractions, like Alien Laser Tag, Copter Twirl, Star Wars characters and more. By popular demand.....Oscar the Robot is back this year thanks to the Anniston Waterworks and Sewer Board! Andthe “just for fun” bike race for kids will be a major hit again this year.

The Hot Blast Music Café provides a diverse mix of music from various artists all day, and the Mellow Mushroom Mad Dash provides kids a chance to run one lap around the .7-mile bike race course. Add art vendors, Relay for Life booths, and sponsor booths for a full day of fun on Saturday!

Sunday’s Cheaha Challenge presented by Wells Fargo Advisors

in Piedmont will offer route options from 26 miles (with very few hills), to 102 miles and a climb over Cheaha Mountain—twice! We hope you will cheer for these cyclists as they travel Hwy 9 and the Scenic Drive, but we especially hope you will be courteous and safe as you encounter them on the roadways.

These events are made possible by our sponsors and the tireless efforts of hundreds of volunteers. The Noble Street Festival benefits CalhounCounty Relay for Life. More than $70,000 has been donated since 2005, and the 2012 goal is $10,000. The Cheaha Challenge benefitsthe Chief Ladiga Trail. More than $23,000 has been donated to this community project.

Meals on Wheels has been serving disabled and homebound residents of our county for over 30 years. Seventy-five hot wholesome meals are delivered five days a week to individuals who wouldn’t otherwise have access to one. The meals are prepared by Stringfellow Hospital Food Service with each client’s specific dietary needs considered.

The meals are delivered by volunteers. Please contact MEALS ON WHEELS, and volunteer to drive a route. If twenty people would volunteer, we could start a new route in the Saks, Weaver, and Alexandria area where there is a real need. You would only have to drive every other week. We do prefer two people to drive a route in order to cover the area quicker and safer.

Just one hour of your time will mean so much to others.256-237-4538

As part of the entire week-end of events at the Noble Street Festival, the Sunny King Criterium, sponsored by the Sunny King Automo-tive Group, is definitely ahighlight for sports fans of any ilk. The criterium draws an international field ofathletes, from junior racers all the way up to elite pros. For the past several years, the criterium—along with several other key philan-thropic events around the area—has been made pos-sible through this crucial sponsorship.

“This must go back to my late husband Sunny and to his father. It’s a tradition that they’ve passed on. Our helping in the community is part of our history,” says Patty King of the decision to sponsor this event. “Mike Poe came to visit me several years ago about helping with the event, and it just sounded like something that could be great for both Sunny King and for downtown Anniston. It’s been successful be-yond my wildest expectations. It goes back to the in-

credible leadership and vision of the event, and of course, the volun-teers. It’s long-term suc-cess will be something that we’ll keep building on for this community.”

This year’s event holds a special place for the Sunny King Automotive Group as a family, as April 22, 2012 marks the 90th anniversary of the en-tire company.

“We’ve been here forever. We’re celebrating our 90th anniversary literally during the Festival down-town. The longevity in the community shows we’re a good brand in Calhoun County. We love being good citizens in this community. We employ about 140 people and we all live here. We’re involved in dif-ferent facets in the surrounding area and the great people in our dealerships want to be great citizens to this community.”

Before there was a Noble Street Festival, before there was a Red Diamond Restaurant Tour or a Kid-zone, there was a small-town event that was working hard to make a name for itself in the world of cy-cling by pairing the existing Cheaha Challenge Century Ride with some criterium racing in downtown An-niston.

Luckily, Sherman Pitts, Chief Fi-nancial Officer of Red DiamondCo, is an avid cyclist who decided to make the trek in 2005 from Bir-mingham to the area for the Chal-

lenge and decided to have dinner at what was then referred to as the Taste of Noble. This buffet-style meal was intended to bring more people downtown to watch the cri-terium races as well as offer a pre-ride meal for the century.

“We were gearing up for Red Diamond’s 100th anniversary,” says Pitts, “and we were trying to plan community events to celebrate it, so I contacted Mike Poe. The res-taurant tour was right down our al-ley because we have restaurants as customers. We started in 2006 and have been doing it every year since. It just seems to get smoother every

year.”

This year, the Red Diamond Res-taurant Tour has been chosen as a Top 10 event in Alabama, as this year’s statewide theme will focus on food.

“We’re thrilled to see that it’s a top 10 event, but that’s not why we do it. People appreciate us being in-volved in the community and that’s really all that matters to us. And besides, I just enjoy it. It’s a lot of fun for me and the company likes to support events like that. We get a lot of satisfaction out of that.”
