The City of Monona has often been called the “best kept secret in Dane County.” Monona offers residents and businesses an excellent loca-tion, outstanding schools, quality recreational and community programming, an award-winning li-brary, and great places to shop and work. Fully surrounded by the City of Madison, in the heart of Dane County, Monona stands out as an oasis

of civic pride, strong community institutions, and generations of families who cherish this special place. Our stunning lakefront and numerous parks, inland and along the shore, provide ample

opportunities for leisure and recreation. Busi-ness and industry thrive along our award-winning commercial corridors, and many businesses large and small are proud to call Monona home. Close to downtown Madison by bike, bus, or car, Mono-na is an ideal place to live, work, and raise a family.

Monona has a well-established campus of amenities in our City Centre, which is located at the western end of Nichols Road. This area in-cludes our largest park, Winnequah Park, which covers 44.3 acres. The Library, which was sub-stantially expanded in 2003, was awarded the Best Library in Wisconsin in 2010. Our Community Center and Senior center provide great program-ming, community events, and space for private functions. The Monona Community Pool is a popular spot all summer long, surrounded by athletic fields, park shelters, tennis courts, and a skateboard park. Our Dreampark, built in 1997, remains a popular destination for kids of all ages, and it is located in the center of Winnequah Park. The Winnequah Park Shelter was rebuilt in 2008.

Ahuska Park is located at the south end of Monona, providing excellent athletic fields for baseball, soccer, and football, plus eight tennis courts. All facilities have lighting. With a Veter-ans Memorial, park shelter and playground, there is plenty to do here as well. Ahuska is also the location of the Monona Farmers Market, which happens every Sunday from May to October, from 9am to 1pm.

Monona is host to many popular annual events in Dane County. Our Memorial Day Pa-rade on Monona Drive is the largest annual parade in Dane County. The Fourth of July Festival pro-vides three days of fun, with food, activities, car-nival rides, and live bands, culminating in the July 4th fireworks. The Fall Festival provides many fun activities for kids and their families, including mu-sic, crafts, food, animal rides, and a pumpkin hunt. The Recreation department offers extensive pro-gramming throughout the year for people of all ages. Please consult the Recreation Department Guide or website for current program offerings.

Monona has excellent schools, thanks in part to our long-standing partnership with Cottage Grove. The Monona Grove School District has neighborhood elementary schools through fifth

grade, and then all the kids come together for secondary education at Gla-cial Drumlin Middle School ( built in 2008), and Monona Grove High School (rebuilt in 2000). The District has excellent academic programs, excellent music and fine arts programs, and a wide range of athletic and extra-curricu-lar opportunities. Serving a population of about 16,000, our district is large enough to offer a wide range of program-ming, while still being small enough to enable most kids to participate in the activities which they choose. Immacu-late Heart of Mary School is also located in Monona.

Monona sits at the southeastern edge of the Madison urban landscape, in an ideal location for commuting. We are 10 minutes from the Isthmus by car; 20 minutes by bus; and 30 minutes by bi-

cycle. Monona is a one hour drive to Milwaukee Brewers games, and just two hours from O’hare. We are 15 minutes from Dane County Regional Airport, and 5 min-utes from the Dutch Mill transportation hub. Monona has its own Commuter service, the Monona Express, to down-town; with general and para-transit services during the day on the Monona Lift. Madison Metro bus service is also avail-able on the edge of town. The Capital City Recreation Trail passes through our southern tip, and the Lake Loop Bike Trail passes through the heart of Monona.

History Monona


of

The City of Monona, an Indian word for “beautiful,” was inhabited by Native Americans as early as 7,000 B.C., according to the dated arti-facts found in the area. However, most of the In-dian artifacts that have been found date from the Woodland Culture period, which extended from 500 B.C. until the arrival of the Europeans.

Builders of effigy mounds lived in the area during this period. They buried their dead and ac-companying artifacts in earthen mounds that were in the shape of animals as well as other shapes, usu-ally conical and linear. In all, there are at least ten such burial mounds in Monona.

The first white settler to the area, Abraham Wood, arrived about 1837, just as many of the Winnebagos were leaving. Mr. Wood was hired to build a home for the first white family to live in Madison, which had been named the territorial capital in 1836.

Wood married the daughter of the Winneba-go Chief DeKaury and built a permanent wood structure for his wife and himself. This building became a landmark in the area and was known as the “Winnebago Squaw’s home.” After repeated usage, “Winnebago Squaw” became “Winnequah.” Today there is a road, park, and two schools named after the first white settler’s wife.

Originally part of the Town of Blooming Grove, Monona was incorporated as a village on August 29, 1938. By that time the area had changed from consisting of farmland and sum-mer homes to include more permanent homes and small businesses. Over the years the village developed many public services, including police and fire protection, street maintenance and the provision of sewer and water utilities. During the

1950’s the village grew from 2,544 to 8,178, which was the largest percentage increase (231%) of any community in the state during this decade.

The population increase led to a need for ex-panded Village facilities and services, and in 1963 the Village built a community center and adjacent swimming pool near the intersection of Nichols Road and Healy Lane. In 1967 the Village built a public library at the corner of Nichols Road and Schluter Road, and after changing to City status in 1969, a city hall was built on Nichols Road across from the library. This building housed all the other operations of the city (including the Fire and Police Departments).

During 1989 a new public works facil-ity was built at 851 Femrite Drive. In 1993 extensive remodeling of the City Hall and Community Center took place. Also dur-ing 1993 a new community swimming pool was opened to the public. A major renovation and addition was made to the Monona Public Library in 2001.

The City of Monona operates under the laws of the State of Wisconsin as a city of the fourth class and uses a mayor-council form of government. The City Council appoints a full-time City Administrator who directs and coordinates the City’s operations and services on a day-to-day basis.

The Mayor, elected at-large for a two year term of office, together with six Alderpersons, elected at-large for two year staggered terms, comprise the Monona City Council. The Council serves as the legislative branch of City Government, enacting ordinances and resolutions, approving the annual bud-get, setting policies and taking other actions to guide the operations of the City. Elections are held on a non-partisan basis in April; one Alderperson is elected Council President, functioning as “acting mayor” whenever necessary.

The council regularly meets on the first and third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Monona Library Community Media Room. All meetings are open to the general public.

The City of Monona has many beau-tiful, established parks where families can enjoy a picnic, take in views of Lake Mono-na, or enjoy the open space to get in some exercise. These parks host many annual events and programs that provide fun-filled opportunities throughout the year. Winnequah Park, located next to City Hall, the Community Center and the Library, is home to the Dream Park Play-ground, a destination for kids and groups from all over the area. The Dream Park Shelter, new in 2007, hosts many special events including the Monona 4th of July Festival, the Lake Monona Run, the Fall Family Festival, and Concerts in the Park. The Shelter is also a popular site to rent for graduation and birthday parties, family re-

unions, and wedding receptions. The Park is home to a beautiful gazebo that is featured in marketing banners across the city, with landscaping main-tained by the Ladies’ Improvement Society. The new “Blue” Park Playground equipment was installed in 2010 and is a fun play structure in a quieter, less busy area of Winnequah Park. The Skate Park is wildly popular for kids of all ages. A lagoon runs through the middle of the park and empties into Lake Monona. During the cold, winter months, ice skating can be enjoyed on this lagoon. There are two tennis courts located next to the pool which are home to lessons when weather permits. Many recreation programs including Youth Baseball and Softball, Youth Soccer, and Summer Camps take place at this park. Win-nequah Park is also home to the Monona Community Pool, a great place to spend a hot summer day or night. Winnequah Park is a fun active park that is enjoyed throughout the year.

Ahuska Park is home to athletic teams such as the Monona Grove Youth Football, Monona Home Talent, Monona Warriors, US Tennis Association and various Monona Grove High School sports teams. The lighted athletic field was recently renamed “Haukereid Field” after Pee Wee Football organizer Mor-rie Haukereid. Ahuska is also the home of the Dane County Veteran’s Memorial and hosts the Monona Farmer’s Market and the Monona Grove Businessmen’s Association Chili Cook-Off.

Lake Monona is a boater-friendly lake. There are three access points to launch from in the City of Monona. Boat-owners have the ability to purchase an annual pass to launch from any public launch in Dane County. The Lake Access Permit is a 15-month permit (January 1 through March 31 of the follow-ing year). It is required year-round at all launch sites in the City of Monona, City of Madison and Dane County Parks. The City of Monona also offers three locations to store a canoe or kayak for the summer enabling paddlers to enjoy the lake with ease. From Graham Park, Frost Woods Beach, Birch Haven Park, Schluter Beach and Stone Bridge Park, you can sit and enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Monona and the Madison skyline.

Recreation activities are abundant in the City of Monona. The Parks & Recreation Department offers programs for children and adults and also manages several special events throughout the year. The Youth Programs include Youth Dance, Soccer, Flag Football, Basketball, Baseball/Softball, Wrestling and Tennis, Field Trips to Great America, Noah’s Ark and local area attractions. The Monona Community Pool is a 300,000 gallon pool that has a waterslide, two diving boards, six 25-meter lap lanes, shallow end, and baby pool. We are proud to offer a safe, affordable swimming experience. Look no further than the Monona Community Pool for a summer of cool and refreshing fun!

Built in 1993, the Pool attracts over 50,000 people annually with our open swim, adult lap swim, swim lessons, and private rentals including the Monona Swim & Dive Team. Different pack-ages are available for using the pool including daily admission, season pass or multiple day passes. A concession stand is also available to recharge our swimmers.

The pool is located at 1013 Nichols Rd and is in the heart of the Monona city campus. The pool opens Memorial Day weekend and typically stays open until the last Sunday in August. Chamber Programs ServicesandAmbassadors The Chamber of Ambassadors are the welcoming arm of the Monona Cham-ber of Commerce. They visit new businesses and answer their questions about the business community. These 20 Ambassadors are representatives of the business community, they volun-teer their time to share information, welcome new businesses and provide direct member to member communication between the chamber, community and its businesses.

Annual Holiday Food Drive The annual holiday food drive provides turkey dinners to needy families in our area. The dinners are provided to families in November and December, through our local food pantry and via the Monona Grove High School’s holiday gift packages.

Business Seminars Business Seminars are held twice per year and are co-sponsored by Monona State Bank and Oak Park Place. These seminars provide excellent insights and strate-gies for our members and are available at no charge.

Business and Community Guide The Business Guide is published annually and distrib-uted to every resident and business in the community. Additional copies are available through the Chamber Office, Monona City Hall, the Library and distributed through our newcomers packages. The guide is produced locally.

ChamberCare The ChamberCare Health Insurance Program is an insurance program offered through Group Health Cooperative (GHC), Wisconsin Physicians Service (WPS) and Dean Health Care. ChamberCare focuses service in Dane County and is sold through local insurance agents to small businesses with one to 99 employees. An optional Dental Health plan is also available.

Holiday Decorating Contest The holiday decorating contest encourages businesses and residents to brighten Monona with holiday lights.

Memorial Day Parade The Annual Monona Memorial Day Parade honors all living and deceased who have or are serving our country. This event is hosted by the Monona Chamber of Commerce through the efforts of dedicated volunteers. It is sponsored entirely by contributions of time, talent and dollars from local busi-nesses and residents.

Monona Business Watch Program The Monona Business Watch Program is endorsed by the Chamber of Commerce as a cooperative effort between the business community, chamber and police depart-ment. This independent organization creates a network of instant crime alerts, provides training, creates awareness and opens two-way communication between the business community and police department. Monona Drive Reconstruction Project

Gold Winner The American Concrete Pave-ment Association (ACPA) has named the Monona Drive Reconstruction Project its Gold Winner in the Municipal Streets and Intersections (>30,000 SY) Category. The award was part of the 22nd annual “Excellence in Concrete Pavement” awards which recognize quality concrete pavements constructed in the United States and Canada.

“It was very evident from the beginning of the construction of the Monona Drive project that it was going to be a special one. The businesses, City of Monona, the Department and the con-tractors were all so well prepared for the project”, said Kevin McMullen, President of the Wisconsin Concrete Pavement Association.

Monona Drive (County BB) carries up to 32,000 vehicles per day and is the city’s main busi-ness roadway. Constructed in 1967 as a four-lane undivided concrete roadway, this one-mile sec-tion had many issues, including a crash rate three times the state average; deteriorating pavement with severe spalling and joint failure; no bike ac-commodations; and incomplete pedestrian accom-modation. The Cities of Monona and Madison, Dane County, area business owners, residents, and consultant, and the contractor worked together to create a functional, durable, and attractive con-crete roadway. The project called for 35,000 square yards of concrete pavement with bike lanes; 1,000 square yards of colored and textured concrete for crosswalks, median treatments, and truck aprons; a raised median that incorporated both stamped col-ored concrete and landscaping; 25,000 lineal feet of curb and gutter; and 60,000 square feet of sidewalk. Another hallmark of the project was the reduction in the number of driveways by almost 50 percent, a key factor in the goal to reduce accidents. Aes-thetics were improved through landscape easements, landscaped terraces, decorative lighting, stone walls, street furniture, and more than 3,400 plantings. (information from mymonona.com)

Golden Seagull: Lindsay Weisensel The Golden Seagull was established for the people who had the greatest impact on the Monona Chamber of Commerce this year; honoring their outstanding dedication to the Monona Community and the Monona Chamber of

Commerce. Lindsay has served on the Parade committee and Sting Auction committee. She provides input and active involvement on all projects. Lindsay is great at looking at our activities from another perspective and suggesting changes to improve them and make them more effective.

Chamber Member of the Year Jim Imhoff Memorial Award: Bobette Handel Introduced in memory of Jim Imhoff Sr. the award is in tribute to his non-stop active promotion of the Chamber. Given any oppor-tunity Tim would convince you of the impor-tance of joining the organization and becom-ing an active participant in Chamber activities. Bobette is our past President; she has served on the Sting Auction & Parade Committees and also is a member of the Marketing Commit-tee. Bobette was very involved and proactive with the reconstruction of Monona Drive. She clearly reminded everyone involved that the focus must be on helping effected busi-nesses. She actively marketed and supported the Monona Moola program.

Community Attraction Award: Monona Drive Reconstruction The Community Attraction Award was designed to bring recognition to the event or public facility that creates a draw to the Monona community in the form of tourist dollars or community recognition. Monona Drive is not just another street project. The redevelopment has become a showcase for how our communities “main street” can improve traffic flow while generat-ing a sense of community.
