John Jez is in his sixth season as head men’s lacrosse coach
at C.W. Post. Jez is only the eighth head coach in the 53-year
history of the program. Th e Pioneers have reestablished the
strong winning tradition and perennial national dominance of
the men’s program at the Long Island University.
Team and individual success have gone hand in hand dur-
ing Jez’s tenure. Two national titles and three conference cham-
pionships have come under the watch of Jez. Th irty four players
have earned East Coast Conference year end honors, including
Mike Messina, who was named 2008 Rookie of the Year honors
and capped off his career with ECC Player of the Year honors in
2011. Greg Cerar earned USILA Most Outstanding Player and
Attackman as well as ECC and ECAC Player of the Year distinc-
tion in 2009. Jez has also helped his players to earn a combined
34 All-America distinctions, including 12 First Team, 14 Second
Team and eight Honorable Mention selections.
Under his tutelage, Messina, Cerar and Michael Cama
were honored as top players in their respective positions by the
USILA. Messina was named the 2011 Outstanding Player of the
Year as well as the Lt. Donald McLaughlin Jr. Award for Most
Outstanding Midfi elder. In 2009, Cerar was honored as the
Lt. Col. J Turnbull Award winner for Outstanding Attackman
of the Year and received the Lt. Raymond Jenners award for

cluding Erik Boyd (2011), Dan DaCosta (2011), Mike Giordano
(2011), Matt Dimler (2008), Greg Cerar (2009), David Loftus

letes who have achieved a 3.25 or better were named to the ECC
Commissioner Honor Roll.

mark in 2011 and fell one game shy of the national champion-
ship game. Th e Pioneers led the conference in points per game
(19.17), ground balls per game (39.50) and goals against average
(5.28). Th ey also played tight defense on penalty kills, allowing
17 goals on 82 chances. Messina was named the InsideLacrosse
as well as the ECC and ECAC Player of the Year and 10 Pioneers
received All-America and All-Conference mention.
In 2010, C.W. Post captured its second straight and third
overall national title in a rematch over LeMoyne at M&T
Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. Th e Pioneers bounced
back from a halftime defi cit to defeat the Dolphins, 14-9, and
fi nished the season as the top-ranked team in the fi nal USILA
national poll. Th e Pioneers led the national in man-up scoring
percentage and had the highest winning percentage among all
Division II teams with a program-best 16-1 record.
Th e 2009 team fi nished as NCAA Division II National
Champions after defeating LeMoyne, 8-7, in front of more than
24,000 fans at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

A veteran lacrosse coach at the high school, collegiate and professional levels, Frank Vitolo enters his sixth season as the program’s top assistant and defensive coordinator. “Frank is one of the top defensive coaches in the nation,” says head coach John Jez. “His hard work and dedication has continued our program’s winning tradition and without him we would not be at the level of competitiveness we are at today. His game preparation is unmatched. C.W. Post lacrosse is blessed to have his guidance and leadership. I do not know what we would do without him.” Prior to joining Jez’s staff , Vitolo was an assistant with the New Jersey Pride of the Major League Lacrosse from 2002-05 and also spent eight seasons on the coaching staff at North-east-10 member Pace University. Vitolo served as the Setters’ head coach from 2000-02 and his team was nationally ranked during that time. In 2011, Vitolo’s defense posted a 5.28 goals against aver-age, which was the highest in the program’s history. Erik Boyd (Second Team), Dan DaCosta (Second Team), Jason Cranmer (Second Team) and John Wood (Honorable Mention) each earned USILA All-America recognition. In 2010, Vitolo was the architect of a defensive unit that posted a 5.88 goals against average (second-best nationally) and the best mark for a Pioneer defense in over 39 years (1972 - 5.75 goals against average). Under Vitolo’s guidance, defensemen Bryan Leonard (First Team), Joe Blount (Second Team) and Jon Kology (Honorable Mention) were named to USILA All-America teams. His 2008 defense was fi fth in scoring defense (6.79 goals per game) and eighth in man-down (75 percent stoppage). In the last fi ve seasons, Vitolo has coached nine defensive All-Americans at C.W. Post. Among those honored are four First Team selections Rob Blount (2007), Chase Safarowic (2007), Bryan Leonard (2009) and Joe Blount (2010); six Sec-ond Team selections Bryan Leonard (2008, 2010), Joe Blount (2009), Dan DaCosta (2011), Erik Boyd (2011), Jason Cranmer (2011) and Honorable Mention selections, Jon Kology (2009) and John Wood (2011). Jerry DeLorenzo joins the Pioneers coaching staff after coaching at the high school and college level over the past eight years. Prior to joining C.W. Post, DeLo-renzo spent the 2011 season coaching goalkeepers and defense at Molloy
College. In 2009 and 2010 DeLorenzo returned to his alma mater, Division Avenue, in Levittown, where he was an assistant coach for the Blue Dragons who went 28-8. In 2008 Delorenzo served as an assistant goalkeeper and defense coach for the 2008 National Champion NYIT Bears. From 2004-07, Delorenzo spent time as assistant defense and goalkeeper coach at Long Beach High School. DeLorenzo was a three-year player at Syracuse University and was a member of the 1989 National Championship team. He transferred to Towson State and played one year in 1992. He helped lead the Tigers to an NCAA appearance and was named the team’s MVP. He fi nished his coursework at Syracuse and graduated with a degree in Political Science in 1996. DeLorenzo played for Division Avenue, where he was named an All-American and was selected to play in the North-South in 1987 following graduation. C.W. Post enters the season with a diff erent look to its roster. With the graduation of 20 se-niors, including eight All-Americans last season, the Pioneers welcome 25 newcomers to its 45-man roster and head coach John Jez is confi dent that this is a reloading year and this team will lay the ground work for future success. Picked to fi nish second in the East Coast Con-ference, the Pioneers are a solid built team but will have their work cut out for them this season. An athletic defense is quicker than years past, but will have to learn quickly on the job. Th e attack will be a strength and the midfi eld will be a solid compo-nent.
Attack Th e attack unit returns last season’s leading scorer, Eddie Plompen (West Islip, N.Y.). A First Team All-America selection last season, the senior racked up 72 points (54g, 18) last season and is described by Jez as a great fi nisher. Junior Justin Patterson (Corning, N.Y.) scored 23 goals last season and is looking to step into a bigger role this season. Patterson sees the fi eld well and serves as the quarterback on off ense. Senior Doug Hoch (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) makes his return back to the squad this year. Hoch, who scored 18 goals for the Pioneers in 2010, is a sharp shooter and can be a valuable off ensive weapon. Sophomore Connor Mackay (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) saw limited time on the fi eld last season but still scored three goals with an assist. He played well during the fall season and will be fi ghting for a starting spot this season. Also adding to the mix
are freshmen Nicco Vella (Orlando, Fla.) and Gary Watson (St. James, N.Y.). Both Vella and Wat-son were standout scorers at their respective high schools and played hard during the fall and will be called upon for opportunities this spring.
Off ensive Midfi eld Th e graduation of USILA Player of the Year Mike Messina leaves a void in the midfi eld but Jez has nu-merous players to rely on, including senior captain Keith Rodriguez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.). Rodri-guez, who was named an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American, tallied 18 goals and 14 assists last season. He is athletic and a good dodger and also provides leadership on and off the fi eld. Sophomore Octavio Bernabo (Mahopac, N.Y.) and junior Chris Ruhlig (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) are also
expected to see playing time in the middle. Bernabo played in played in 15 games and scored one goal with two assists last season. He is a tough player who can play both ways. Ruhlig saw action in seven games last season and a goal with an assist in 2011.

He is also athletic and is looking to break out this year. Freshmen Brendon Walker (North Palm Beach, Fla.) and Connor Drost (Wading River, N.Y.) were standouts in high school and will be expected to con-tribute right away. Walker is strong and can shoot with both hands and Drost has the tools necessary to be a produc-tive midfi elder. Junior Dennis Gan-non (Huntington, N.Y.), a transfer from Sacred Heart, will push for playing time this season.
Short Stick Midfi eld Senior Wade Ungar (Middle Island, N.Y.) has been a key member of the defensive middie unit for the last three years and knows the system well. He registered 10 caused turnovers with 32 ground balls and added a goal and three assists.
Face-Off Th e graduation of Ronnie Irving opens another spot in the Pioneers’ lineup but senior James Kozlakowski (Lynbrook, N.Y.) and sophomore Bran-don Bertone (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) are strong candidates for the job. Kozlakowski played in 11 games last season and took some reps as the face-off specialist. He is a strong player who is ready to step into a bigger role this season. Bertone saw limited action in two games last season, including Mesa State where he won all four of his face-off attempts.
Long-Stick Midfi eld Incoming junior transfers Brandon Burke (West Islip, N.Y.) and T.J. McAn-drew (Randolph, N.J.) each possess the athleticism needed for the position and both were All-Americans at their re-spective JUCO schools. Burke is quick and can also take face-off s while McAn-drew brings good size and speed. Freshman Robert Chiocco (Mass-apequa, N.Y.) is a hard-working and determined player who needs college experience to continue improving.
Defense Th e defensive squad took a hit due to graduation but Jez is hopeful that returners Ryan Carroll (Babylon, N.Y.) and Bennett Dee (Charlotte, Vt.) can step up this season. Both played in the system last season and are vocal leaders on the fi eld. Incoming transfers Scott Mattera (West Islip, N.Y.) and J.D. Skura (Clarence, N.Y.) each bring more experience to a relatively new group. Freshman Justin Woodley (Bloom-ington, Minn.) has the skills to be a standout player with his athleticism and hard work.
Goal Currently, the front runners are junior Tim Bradley (Wantagh, N.Y.) and freshman Sam Price (Glenville, Pa.). Both have quick hands and are very good at stopping the ball plus Bradley brings experi-ence having played at Nassau.
Schedule C.W. Post is playing a more abbreviated sched-ule than in year’s past with a 12-game slate. Th e Pioneers open the season at home against ECC foe, Wheeling Jesuit, on Feb. 18 and follows that with another home date against Seton Hill on Feb. 25. Th e Pioneers will play non-conference games against Southern New Hampshire (March 3) and Bentley (March 10). Th ey will close out the regular season with a pair of games on the road at Molloy (April 28) and Chest-nut Hill (May 5). Th e semifi nal round of the NCAA Champion-ships begins May 20-21 with the championship game to be played on May 27 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

Th e son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees.
He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis Uni-versity as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977.
Th e author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His fi rst book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “Th e Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place,” now in its third edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author “Th e Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addi-tion, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” which was published in 2005.
Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others.
He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. Th e couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accom-plishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow.
