ave made some great changes to the bike course(s) this year. We have chosen to return to using 7th street to exit from

tion to Highway 146. We will loop all cyclists under 146 via the underpass in North Kemah that goes under the Kemah

e (146). We also take the Olympic bike course all the way south into Texas City and use Highway 197 to extend the far

of the course instead of using 96 and League City.

l athletes will exit transition on the south side of the parking lot on Harris Street. The bike in/out chute will go from Har-

s to 7th street before athletes are allowed to mount their bike on the mount/dismount line under the big inatable.

thletes are to mount their bikes after the mount/dismount line. Those mounting by putting their leg over while not mov-

g should go past the line and pull as far to the right as possible to make way for those that run and jump onto their bike

o mount. Please be sure to have your gears set to easy so that you can effectively and quickly mount your bike.

nce on 7th athletes will then turn right into the right hand lane of Highway 146.

fter a very short distance heading north on 146 cyclists will exit (before the Kemah Bridge) so that they can follow the

ones and loop around under the bridge to rejoin Highway 146 heading south in the right hand lane.

nce heading south on Highway 146 cyclists will do so for 6 miles (Sprint) or 10 miles (Olympic) before making a turn.

ust before the Dickinson Bayou Bridge on Highway 146 sprint athletes will exit the highway and follow the cones to loop

nder the bridge (146) and rejoin heading back north towards Kemah. Olympic distance athletes will not exit but con-

nue south on 146 over the Dickinson Bayou Bridge into Texas City and to 197.

lympic distance riders will turn right on 197 and go down about 2 miles before making a u-turn and coming back to

ighway 146. The u-turn will be taken in the last media break before the light and Highway 3.

E AWARE: Be extra cautious on the 197 area of the course. There is a golf course about 1 mile down 197 before the turn-

ound. There will be plenty of police presence on the course but it never hurts for athletes to be extra careful when out there.

he intersection of the 146 feeder and 197 will be busy as well. Just be on alert and be paying extra close attention. When

turning this will be the only part of the course where cyclists will be in the left lane.ALL OLYMPIC DISTANCE CYCLISTS

RE TO USE THE LEFT LANE OF 197 AFTER THE U-TURN WHEN HEADING EAST BACK TO 146. THIS IS THE

NLY SECTION OF THE ENTIRE COURSE WHERE THE LEFT LANE IS USED BY CYCLISTS. OTHERWISE ALWAYS

SE THE RIGHT LANE. SPRINT COURSE ATHLETES ALWAYS USE THE RIGHT LANE.

nce cyclists make there way back to 146 via 197 the will have to turn left under 146 and cross 2 lanes of trafc. This

hould not be a problem as there will be Texas City ofcers there to control vehicular trafc.

urn left off 197 onto the 146 feeder. Stay in the right lane, all the way back to Kemah.

ders will remain on the feeder for about a mile before the feeder permanently merges back with the main highway.

ollow 146 all the way back to Kemah.

l athletes turn right on 7th street and dismount bikes on the line then run them through the chute into transition.

Memorial Hermann, he called Kim Gandler, a sports

omechanist on the Institutes human perormance team.

hat Almon received rom the Institute was intense physicalerapy and unexpected encouragement that allowed him to

mplete the Florida Ironman in 13 hours, 50 minutes.

hree weeks prior to Ironman, I couldnt even get on the

ke, said Almon. I could swim and run, but the physical act

    leaning over was too painul.

A visit with William Mosi Jones, M.D., a sports medicine-

trained physician afliated with the Institute and The

University o Texas Health Science Center at Houston

(UTHealth) Medical School, revealed that Almon had

several bulging discs, including one that was herniated

    15 millimeters.

Therapy with Memorial Hermann physical therapists Talal

Hariri, D.P.T., and Franz Valenzuela, D.P.T., provided exercisesto lessen Almons pain. Dr. Valenzuela also coached Almon

on how to identiy and avoid dysunctional movement patterns

    that triggered his pain.

With each session, I improved, said Almon. More than

anything, the sta at the Ironman Sports Medicine Institute at

Memorial Hermann gave me the confdence and knowledge

that I was capable o competing.

Gandler said the Institutes work with athletes covers both the

physical and mental preparation to perorm.

    Transitioning to triathlons

Years earlier, because o back problems, Almon was

encouraged by his primary care physician to lose weight and

strengthen his core muscles. As a result, he started running

marathons, completing the frst one alongside his ather. He

also biked the BP MS 150.

So in 2009 when a coworker persuaded him to participate

in a triathlon, it seemed like a logical progression. Ater that

sprint triathlon, Almon progressed to an Olympic distanceevent and then a hal Ironman beore he decided to attempt

the Florida Ironman in November 2011.

Laughing at how he swam the breaststroke rather than

reestyle in his frs t eight triathlons, the outgoing Almon said

its not his main goal to better his time with each triathlon.

    Instead, he enjoys

    participating at

    whatever speed he

    can and relishing

    the moment.

    Nothing compares

    with crossing the fnish

line o an Ironman, said Almon as he

    looks orward to racing

    in eight triathlons

    in 2012, including

    Memorial Hermann

    Ironman Texas.

    With each race, Ive

    been underprepared,

    but that has given

    me the motivation to

improve my ftness level, to do better and train more or the next

event, said the school yearbook sales representative who has

lost 60 pounds over the last fve years.

Smarter training is what led Almon to undergo perormance

testing at the Institute while preparing or the Florida Ironman.

He has recently started using the results o his lactate threshold

profle to help him train or his frst event o 2012, the Memorial

    Hermann Kemah Triathlon.

Lactate threshold is based on dierent things, but or me itsabout monitoring my heart rate so I dont burn out beore hitting

    the fnish line, he said.

When you know your lactate threshold, you can train your body

to make less lactate and clear it aster, which can increase your

    perormance, added Gandler.

Almon also underwent the Kcal/hour test at the Institu

test measures expended calories per hour while runnin

cycling, so an athlete can determine nutritional needs.

Wilson, Ph.D., a registered dietician on the Institutes h

perormance team, counseled Almon on ways to bette

    his body.

    A circle of encouragement

These days, Almon trains upwards o 15 hours weekly.encouragement he received has gone ull circle as he c

t Your Timing Chips what your timing chip will look like. You will receive this at packet pickup. The chip is disposable and will comea disposable strap. When tting the strap to your left ankle be sure to not make i t too tight or too loose. A strap

s put on too tight may rub and irritate your ankle throughout the race. Those chips put on too loose will movend and also irritate and in worse case possibly even slip off. Put your chip and strap on just snug enough to have movement and be comfortable. The strap is not neoprene but is soft enough that it should not irritate your ankle.you button the strap you cannot remove it witouth scissors.

also want to be sure that you scan your chip on our reader mat during packet pickup to verify your information. If itks good youre all set. If anything is incorrect we can x that for you on site and get you on your way. If, for what-eason you do not scan your chip, do not worry. Scanning your chip is only available to give you piece-of-mind. If

participant information (website) is listed correctly then youre all set. Also know that scanning your chip does notate your chip in any way. Activation happens when you cross the mat during the swim on race morning. The chipstraps are all disposable. This means that if you pickup your packet and cannot make the race you do not need tohe chip ba ck. When you cross the nish line you d o not need to have your chip removed. Simply remove it when
