The NorPac Conference has evolved over the past 30 yearsfrom an initial California membership to the current eastand west blend. In 1998, the growth and development ofthe NorPac as an NCAA single-sport conference was assist-ed by a three-year grant from the United States OlympicCommittee (USOC) and the NCAA, as well as by a partner-ship with and support from the United States Field HockeyAssociation (USFHA). Through the grant opportunity, therestructuring of the conference included previous mem-bers Davis and Elkins College, Missouri State, Saint LouisUniversity and current original members California, Pacificand Stanford. Both Appalachian State and Davidsonaccepted invitations to join in 2000, followed by Radford in2001.

Longwood was added to the conference in 2005 as a pro-visional member while reclassifying to a Division I member-ship. After fulfilling NCAA reclassification requirements,Longwood became eligible for its first conference tourna-ment in 2007 and hosted the 2008 championship. TheNorPac Conference welcomed the reestablished UC Davisprogram as an eighth member in July 2008 and the Aggiesstarted a full conference schedule and participated in theirfirst league tournament in 2009.

Continuing to expand the conference, Liberty University isthe newest member to the league. Liberty announcedsponsorship of an inaugural program in November, 2010and began competition as an independent in 2011. NorPacofficially welcomed the Flames as the ninth member onJuly 1, 2012. Liberty joins Appalachian State, Davidson,Longwood and Radford in the East Division. California, UCDavis, Pacific and Stanford comprise the West Division.

The round-robin league divisional play will culminate withthe conference championship tournament. In 2012, thetournament returns to Longwood with an 8-team bracketthat will include the four West Division teams and the fourtop seeds from the East Division.

Since 1999, the NorPac Field Hockey Conference hasreceived an NCAA play-in opportunity or a conferenceautomatic qualification (2005). Stanford University alsoreceived an at-large bid to the 2011 NAA Championship. Inover a decade, NorPac representatives are 9-3 in NCAAplay-in games. This year’s league champion will host thewinner of the Mid-American Conference Tournament onNovember 6, 2012.

Page 8: 2012 Longwood Field Hockey Guide

The Longwood University field hockey team enters 2012 fol-lowing a successful 2011 season that was capped by thesquad’s first ever Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference(NorPac) East Division title and a third-place finish in theNorPac Tournament. The Lancers are led by a talented groupof returners that includes six starters from a year ago, whilefifth year head coach Iain Byers has also added one of hisbiggest incoming classes ever with nine freshmen and onesophomore entering the mix and looking to contribute.

“We are very excited for the upcoming season,” said Byers.“With our returning players and the players we have comingin, we think we have the right mix of talent and skill to have avery successful team.”

Game planLooking to improve on last year’s 13-9 mark, Byers believesthat his squad will have to get off to a quick start and buildtowards their best by the end of the season.

“The preseason will define what to expect for us,” explainedByers. “If everyone shows up in shape and we can really workon the technical and tactical stuff, rather than the condition-ing stuff, we’ll be away with the horses. Because we want tobe at our best by the conference tournament, we’ve plannedthe season to peak towards the end to help us get ready sowe will have a chance to retain the NorPac East title andhopefully start a legacy.”

VeTeran leaDershipThe 2012 squad will be captained by senior goalkeeper KayeGoulding, senior forward Christina Verhulst and junior mid-fielder Stacey de Grandhomme.

“Kaye, Tina and Stacey are important to us,” commentedByers. “They definitely possess the aptitude of good leaders. They’ve all had experience withleadership in the past and aredefinitely very mature andwill approach the season inthe right way.”

The tri-captains will be assist-ed by four other seniors, asBrittany Diaz, Amy Lewis,Nicole Segala and KaityByrum will also look to usetheir experience to better theteam.

“The senior class has beenthrough a lot in the pastthree years, some ups andsome downs, and we expectall of them to be leaders justas much as our captains,”said Byers. “Their senior yearwill be defined by how wellthey influence the youngerplayers and how theyapproach the practices andgames.”

However, Byers feels that all of his student-athletes can beseen as leaders, with none carrying more weight than anoth-er.

“We’ve tried to have this ‘my actions speak louder than yourwords’ philosophy in the last couple of years and I think that’sreally starting to come to fruition,” added Byers. “I expecteveryone to stand up and be counted every single game.”

neWComersWith such a large group of newcomers, Byers expects thereto be a lot of pressure to perform by either earning a startingposition for themselves or helping to challenge the returnersto improve.

“This is one of the biggestclasses we’ve had duringmy time here, but I thinkthey are definitely all goingto compete, and we’re real-ly happy with how strongthe class is,” explainedByers. “It’s a great sign ofwhere the recruiting is andthe level of players thatseek out Longwood fortheir educational school ofchoice.”

forWarDsWith just one senior andtwo sophomores on a lineprimarily made up of fresh-men, Verhulst and sopho-more Jessica Diaz will lookto anchor the Lancers’offensive attack in 2012.

“Being such a young line, the forwards will have to play offtheir energy and enthusiasm to create a lot of chances,” com-mented Byers. “We know we can create some opportunitiesand we will work on putting them in throughout the presea-son. Last season, Tina scored some phenomenal goals and isfundamentally a very strong player with all the skills you wantin an attacker. She’s dynamic and a great finisher. Jessie, who’s speed can cause trouble for anybody, has done a lot ofwork on her finishing this year, so that will also help us a lot. “

miDfielDDe Grandhomme, the team’s top scorer in 2011, Brittany Diazand junior Anne Pishko will lead a talented and experiencedgroup in the Longwood midfield this season.

“This line has great energy and is our strongest asset,” saidByers. “Stacey has great attacking skills and finds herself inthe right position at the right time, while Anne provides sta-bility and consistency with great decision making and off-ballmovement. Brittany’s energy and work rate are phenomenaland she has worked hard on her decision making and ballmovement, so we can definitely see an improvement in her.”

DefenseWith a solid structure in the back and a system designed foranyone to be able to play, Segala and junior Caitlin Smith areexpected to lead the back line.

“We’re expecting Nicole and Caitlin to be able to show con-trol and show the incoming class how we play in the systemwe use,” explained Byers. “Their ball movement, their funda-mental skillset, their decision making and their defensive foot-work are just some of their key assets.”

Sophomore Kelley Fay willlook to add depth to theLancers’ backfield.

“Kelley has improved herdeceptive sweeps by leapsand bounds,” added Byers.“She has also worked on herball movement and decisivepasses and made greatstrides this spring, so we willdefinitely expect to be ableto rely on her in the back.”

GoalkeeperWith Goulding suffering aninjury this summer, Lewisand freshman MargaretMitchell will be competingfor the starting goalkeeperposition. Lewis has notched35 saves in 13 career appear-ances, including six startsthrough her first three yearsat Longwood.

“Kaye’s injury makes this position very interesting,” com-mented Byers. I know both Amy and Margaret can step upand be very good. They both have the skillset to hold theirown and I’m excited to see who will earn the position.”

sCheDuleThe Lancers will open the 2012 season with a pair of games inLock Haven, Pa. The squadwill face off against St.Francis (Pa.) onSaturday, August 25, at 1p.m. before taking onhost Lock Haven onSunday, August 26, at 1p.m. LU will then returnto Farmville for theteam's home opener onFriday, August 31, at 7p.m. against in-state foeWilliam and Mary. TheLancers 2012 non-confer-ence schedule is high-lighted by games againstBoston College, Dukeand Miami-Ohio.

“During the first couplemonths of the season, weplay a lot of Virginia and non-

conference schools toprepare for theNorPac schedule,”explained Byers.“These are importantgames because theywill define our overallrecord for the year. Ifwe can win thesegames, then I think wecan have a prettystrong winning sea-son.”

This year's NorthernPacific Field HockeyConference (NorPac)schedule will feature ahome-and-home, regu-lar-season seriesagainst each of theother four EastDivision conferencemembers.

“We're looking to bevery competitive in theNorPac East,” comment-ed Byers. “Last year wasthe first time we won it,so we would obviouslywant to repeat. The toughest in-conference game will proba-bly be Davidson away. Radford away is also sure to be chal-lenging just because it's on a natural grass surface, and withLiberty being a new program, you just don't know whatyou're going to get out of that game.”

posTseasonLongwood will play host for the 2012 NorPac ConferenceTournament from November 1-3.

“Hosting the NorPac Championship is always a lot of funbecause you have a ton of fans out there for the games,” saidByers. “This is something that only happens once every four

years, so it'll be a goodopportunity for us to real-ly take advantage of andmake a strong showing.”

After reaching the semifi-nal round of the confer-ence tournament in 2011,Byers is challenging histeam to go even further.

“If everything goes ourway and things work outfor us, we’re obviouslylooking to make it to thechampionship game forsure,” said Byers. “That’sour target and oncewe’re in that game, who

knows what happens. After that, we will just take itone game at a time.”

LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY

Page 41: 2012 Longwood Field Hockey Guide

Longwood Field Hockey

With a legacy of learning dating back more than 170 years,Longwood University has developed a meaningful learning envi-ronment that extends far beyond the classroom. Founded in 1839as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, the school was apioneer first in private and later in public education. The state ofVirginia acquired the school in 1884 and renamed it as the NormalSchool, the first state institution of higher learning for women inVirginia. Over the years, the school expanded its curricula and hada succession of names, becoming Longwood College in 1949 andfully coeducational in 1976. On April 24, 2002, history was againmade at Longwood when Gov. Mark Warner signed legislationthat designated Longwood as a university, effective July 1, 2002.

The legacy that began in 1839 continues today as LongwoodUniversity offers more than 100 majors, minors and concentra-

tions to more than4,800 students.Given its historicalroots, LongwoodUniversity enjoys anenviable reputationfor teacher prepara-tion. But the excel-lence has expandedthroughout the uni-versity with strongprograms in the lib-eral arts and sci-ences, business,and professionaland pre-profession-al programs. Todaythe coeducational,c o m p r e h e n s i v estate universitycomprises four sep-

arate colleges: theCook-Cole College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Businessand Economics, the College of Education and Human Services andthe College of Graduate and Professional Studies. The graduatecollege offers programs in education, communication sciencesand disorders, English and sociology, as well as an MBA degree.

Under the leadership of Interim President Marge Connelly,Longwood is committed to developing citizen leaders and pro-vides a meaningful learning environment. Students get an excel-lent grounding in theory then translate their newly acquiredknowledge into action by doing research, internships, fieldworkand community service. Recognizing the value of experientiallearning, Longwood is one of the few universities in the countryto require all students to complete an internship or similar learn-ing experience before graduation. Additionally, Longwood wasthe first institution in Virginia to require that every freshman havea laptop computer. Technology is integrated throughout thelearning process—an essential element for preparing the leadersof tomorrow.

The Greenwood Library supports Longwood’s mission of devel-oping citizen leaders through a comprehensive array of servicesand resources. It is a learning-centered environment that fostersintellectual exchange, scholarly communication, cultural enrich-ment, lifelong information literacy and creative expression. Inaddition, the library provides more than 343,000 titles, 8,000DVDs, 5,100 CDs, 900 print journal subscriptions, and 160 elec-tronic databases with access to more than 51,000 full-text elec-tronic journals. The library also provides integrated technologyfor information retrieval from libraries throughout the world. This state-of-the-art facility is named in honor of Longwood’s22nd president, Dr. Janet Daly Greenwood who served from 1981to 1987.

Longwood provides a range of business services to the regionand state through the Longwood Small Business DevelopmentCenter, while the Longwood Center for the Visual Arts serves asan important and innovative study center and cultural resourcefor the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Longwood University also has a tremendous economic and cul-tural impact on Farmville and the surrounding communities. Astudy conducted by the Longwood Small Business DevelopmentCenter estimates that university employees, students and visitorsspent more than $90 million in 2007—with 66 percent of thatamount being spent in Farmville and the eight surrounding coun-ties.

The Longwood campus, located in the heart of historic Farmville,Va., provides excellent facilities while reflecting the charm, beau-ty and character associated with its long heritage. The campuscommunity was enhanced with the opening of Brock Commons,a beautiful pedestrian promenade that provides a central focalpoint for the Longwood campus while eliminating traffic conges-tion and safety hazards. Fountains, walkways, outdoor sculptureand beautiful landscaping contribute to Brock Commons, creat-ing a parklike atmosphere for students, faculty, staff and the pub-lic.

Longwood’s signature building, Ruffner Hall, was rededicated onApril 23, 2005, and replicates the university’s most beloved build-ing and its beautiful rotunda, dating to the 1880s, which burnedon April 24, 2001, while undergoing a $12 million renovation. Theoriginal eight paintings on the interior of the rotunda dome, cre-ated in 1905 by the Italian-born artist Eugene D. Monfalcone ofRichmond, have been returned to the dome following an exten-sive restoration that was under way prior to the fire. The historicJoan of Arc statue, known affectionately as “Joanie on theStony,” was also restored recently and returned to its place ofhonor on the main floor beneath the rotunda. The larger-than-lifesculpture is a reproduction of the famous 1870 original created byFrench sculptor Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu. The statue was agift of the Class of 1914 and symbolizes Joan of Arc as the patronsaint of Longwood.

Ruffner Hall was reconstructed in the classic style based on theoriginal blueprints and drawings from the state archives inRichmond.

The 83,143-square-foot building houses 22 classrooms, four aca-demic departments, the offices of the Vice President forAcademic Affairs and the deans of the College of Graduate andProfessional Studies and the Cook-Cole College of Arts andSciences, named for benefactors Dr. John R. Cook (Class of 1952)and Dr. Waverly M. Cole.

Between Ruffner Hall and Blackwell Hall, a sunlit hallway formsthe Cole Gallery, which features a collection of more than 500pieces of 19th-century Bohemian glass, Meissen porcelain andEnglish pottery donated to the Longwood Center for the VisualArts by Dr. Cole. Standing guard over this rare collection of deco-rative arts, with her sword held high, is the recently renovatedequestrian statue of Joan of Arc, or “Joanie on the Pony,” byAnna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington.

Adjoining the Cole Gallery is Blackwell Hall, opened in 1920 as thecampus dining hall. This historic facility, which survived the GreatFire of 2001, was named in the mid-1970s in memory of Dr.Herbert R. Blackwell, professor of English and dean of the col-lege. Today, following a recent renovation and conversion,Blackwell Hall has a new role providing space for social, culturaland educational events for the campus and community. Alongwith Blackwell Hall, the extensive renovation included the adja-cent Virginia and Prince Edward meeting rooms.

COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA

The Commonwealth of Virginia is one of the original 13colonies. Named for the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I ofEngland, Virginia was England’s first successful overseascolony and the site of the first permanent English settle-ment in America. West Virginia was part of Virginia until1863.

Virginia’s rich political heritage helped shape the demo-cratic principles on which the United States was founded.Virginia played an important role in the AmericanRevolution (1775-1783), and it entered the Union as the10th of the original 13 states on June 25, 1788. Duringthe American Civil War (1861-1865) the state’s capital,Richmond, was also capital of the Confederacy. The statehas long been nicknamed Old Dominion.

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe, all Virginians, were founding fathersof the United States and were among the first five U.S.presidents. Virginia is also the birthplace of U.S. presi-dents William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson.

Virginia is the 35th largest state in the United States, bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the northand east by Maryland and the District of Columbia, on thewest by West Virginia and Kentucky, and on the south byTennessee and North Carolina.

According to the 2010 national census, Virginia’s popula-tion was 8,001,024, ranking it 12th among the states.Virginia Beach (435,619) is one of the most popularresort destinations on the East Coast, as well as Virginia’slargest city. Richmond (192,913) is the state capital anda center of banking and insurance, and of both retail andwholesale trade. The Naval Base at Norfolk (229,112)and the Naval Shipyard at Portsmouth (101,377) employthousands of civilians and military personnel. Hampton(145,017) is important for its aviation activities such asLangley Air Force Base and a National Aeronautics andSpace Administration (NASA) facility. In Newport News

(178,281) is a shipyard that builds naval ships, includingaircraft carriers. Alexandria (136,974) is part of theWashington, D.C., metropolitan area. Lynchburg(67,720) is the site of light industries. Roanoke (91,552)is the largest city in western Virginia.

Civilian and military employment, mostly with the feder-al government, is an essential part of the Virginia econo-my. The Pentagon, which houses the Department ofDefense, is located in Virginia and is the leading federalemployer in the northern part of the state. There are alsoimportant military bases in Virginia, particularly the mas-sive complex of army, navy, and air force bases in thevicinity of Norfolk.

Average January temperatures range from less than 32°Fin the west to more than 42°F in southeastern Virginia.Average July temperatures range from more than 78°F inthe southeast to less than 68°F in the western moun-tains. Total precipitation ranges from about 35 to morethan 50 inches. Snowfalls are moderate, except in themountain regions.

Besides Virginia, three other states - Kentucky,Massachusetts and Pennsylvania - use the term common-wealth as part of their official names. The delegates tothe convention in Williamsburg, when the firstConstitution of Virginia was adopted on June 29, 1776,used commonwealth as the name for the new form ofgovernment. It is very likely they had in mind thePuritans’ rebellion against the Crown in England morethan 100 years earlier.

Pennsylvania and Massachusetts also chose to be calledcommonwealths after independence from Great Britain. The other 10 former colonies took the name “state,” theterm used in the Declaration of Independence. Kentuckywas once part of Virginia. When Kentuckians joined theUnion as the 15th state in 1792, it also kept the namecommonwealth.
