Living Greener in the Central OkanaganHow’s your environmental footprint? Have you checked yourenvironmental waste-line lately? Can you and your family do more to enhance and protect the Central Okanagan? These are questions we should consider every day. We should strive to put environmental sustainabilityat the forefront of our thoughts and actions to guide the way we live and the impact we have. Thechoices we make every day – take the stairs or the elevator, recycle or generate additional garbage, usea transportation alternative to the car or truck – have an impact on our region’s environment, now andfor the future.

This year we’re leading by example and are reducing our Living Greener Calendar footprint. Ratherthan blanketing the Central Okanagan with 55,000 copies, we’re only mailing to those who specificallyasked to continue receiving the calendar. With more than 80,000 visits last year to the calendar on theRegional District website (not including those of our partner municipalities) we hope you’ll find theonline presence just as convenient and accessible and more environmentally-friendly!

Your ongoing efforts to reduce, re-purpose and recycle truly make a difference. And for that, we andfuture generations thank you.

Satisfy Your SoilNourish your soil and manage weeds usinghighly prized OgoGrow or GlenGrow• Compost returns rich organic matter to the soil and helps

retain moisture.

• Compost contains macro and micronutrients in a stableslow-release form.

• Add compost to safely condition your soil and get the rightnutrients right to where your plants need them – at the roots.

• Mulch with a layer of either popular soil amendment and it will hold moisture, suppress weedsand have the added benefit of feeding the soil.

• Compost will improve the structure of your soil and can be safely applied to lawns, flowerbeds, vegetable gardens and shrubs.

• OgoGrow and GlenGrow add life to soil and help balance microbial populations.

Ogogrow is derived from composted biosolids and woodwaste.

Glengrow is a soil amendment and top dressing produced by composting yard trimmings collected throughout the Central Okanagan.

Make Your Yard Watersmart!A healthy yard includes attention to your landscaping, irrigation system and watering schedule.

• Design landscapes with water conservation in mind.

• Group plants according to their water requirementsand sun and wind exposure.

• Design your irrigation system to match your landscapedesign and needs.

• Ensure you have proper coverage. Brown spots may be the result of misaligned sprinkler heads, not a lackof water.

• Run each zone for a few minutes during daylighthours to check for leaks and broken sprinkler heads.

The City of Kelowna has implemented new irrigation and landscapingwater conservation requirements. The requirements apply to City WaterUtility customers who are making changes to existing landscapes over 100 square metres or building new developments.

For more information or for a free landscape and irrigation systemassessment, call 250 868-3339 or visit kelowna.ca/watersmart.

MAKE WATER WORK for you Despite the beautiful lakes that surround us, there is less wateravailable to Okanagan residents than almost anywhere in Canada.

If you water your lawn, MAKE WATER WORK!

• Aerate your lawn in early spring or fall to improvewater penetration.

• Water works best when you top dress withorganic material like compost.

• Don’t let water stand around. One inch aweek (2.5 cm) will do. But only put it to work when it’s needed.

• Put water on the nightshift. 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.is a good rule of thumb. Water is most efficientduring the coolest part of the day to preventevaporation.

• Water is most effective when paired withplants suitable to our dry climate: drought-tolerant turf, and native and low-water variety plants.

Remember… there is only One Valley. One Water. Learn more at okwaterwise.ca.

Compost – And Cut Your Garbage in Half! One third to one half of household waste is easily compostable. If you recycle and compost you could be putting as little as one or two grocery bags of garbage outfor collection a week – a huge savings for our landfill! And by adding compost to your garden, yoursoil comes alive – greener grass, healthier flowers, better fruits and vegetables!

Tips for successful composting:

• Keep your compost pile moist, not wet, like a well wrung-out sponge

• Aerate by turning the pile occasionally

• Layer “brown” materials (dried leaves, dead plants, tornup newspapers) with “green” materials (plant trimmings, fruit and vegetable waste)

• Cut materials into smaller pieces for faster decomposition

• Avoid thick layers of any one material, such as grass

• Never add meat, fish or dairy

Composting can take 3 to 18 months, depending on howwell you maintain the pile. Compost is ready when itstexture is crumbly and it has a pleasant, earthy smell.
