INDIANS’ WEEKLY! GANG “GREEN” GOBBLES UP THE COUGARS!

The Indians’ “Green” team went up against the Hacienda Heights Cougars “Blue” team on Saturday, different team, same result! The Indians were led by “Rio’s Offensive Player of the Game” Offensive Lineman Manuel Espitia, who is “a bulldog and a wall of protection for our quarterback and opens the holes in the line for our running game,” according to Head Coach Johnny Adargaz. Also leading the charge were “Rio’s Defensive Players of the Game” Andrew Curtis and Xavier “X-Man” Rivas who are Defensive Linemen. Says Coach Adargaz; “ these guys play with BIG HEARTS, never backing down from the (usually) larger offensive linemen. The Green team is primed, prepared and welcomes all challengers.” The Indians will take the field Saturday as they host the La Puente Warriors “Black” at 10:30 at Grant Rea Park on Homecoming Day.

The Braves continued their quest as they rolled through the Cougars in a contest that saw every-one but the water boy score. Says Head Coach Armando Valencia; “Our kids were really licking their lips, the “bye” week made it seem like we were off for an entire month! Unfortunately, Ha-cienda had to bear the aggression that had built up...finally fresh meat!” Fueled by TD’s from Alex Cortez (2), Steven Loera (2), Aaron Martinez, James Enriquez and Nathan Ancheta, the Braves once again ran like a finely tuned, well oiled machine. The defense was lights out once again, not allowing a 1st down the entire game. That makes 2 games in a row holding the oppo-nents without a 1st down. “Rio’s Players of the Game” are Isaiah De La Cruz for anchoring the defense from the DE spot and laying hits on the cougar QB and Derrick Galvez for his work on the defensive line and his effort as he made a block 40 yards down field to ensure a TD on the last play of the 1st half. Christopher Ketcher and Nathan Ancheta for their work during the week running the scout defense and giving the explosive offense major problems. They were rewarded by being named team captains . The Braves will play Saturday at 9:00 a.m. against the La Puente Warriors. Get your popcorn ready, cuz there’s going to be a show!!!

SCOUTS SECONDS AWAY, DROP A TUFF ONE 7-0! The Scouts found themselves in a fight to the finish against the Cougars last week playing to a 0-0 stalemate late into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Scouts, a turnover led to what turned out to be the winning score for the Cougars. The Indians got the ball back with 3:30 left in the game, deep in their own territory. The Indians found themselves on the Cougars side of the field with key passes to #27 Dominick Ortiz and sure handed TE #81 Carlos Alvarez III. They eventually ran out of time and the Cougars secured the win on what APPEARED to be an interception. In reality, the catch was made and the ball stripped from the receiver, but not until AFTER he was on the ground. “Rio’s Players of the Game” #2 David Morales is one of the top defensive players at DE, with many tackles to his credit and #34 Omarion Johnson who “is our toughest kid playing MLB and learning a new position at RB” says Head Coach Julio Baez. The Scouts will play the La Puente Warriors on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Grant Rea Park.

“WHITE” WHIPS HP IN A FAMILIAR PLACE!

The Indians’ “White” team completely dominated the Huntington Park Spartans at Wilson HS in El Sereno. The Indians had played the El Sereno Stallions the week before and “made the place THEIR own” according to Head Coach Frank Lopez. It would be a case of déjà vu for the Indians as they dismantled the Spartans in as classy and sportsmanlike fashion as they could. Coach Lopez felt as though the entire team should be named “Rio’s Players of the Week,” but was persuaded to hi-lite four players instead. The Rio’s Players of the Game” are George Vazquez-Herrera, Jacob Jimenez, Matt Gonzalez and Nathan Mendoza. Coach Lopez says” I’m so proud of the way our team is playing and impressed with their ability to follow directions, it’s what’s helping us succeed in our games.” The “White” finally gets to join the rest of the Indians’ family playing at home for the first time against the West Covina Bruins “White” on Saturday at 9:00 a.m.

The Warriors allowed the Cougars to score, but that was the only score they allowed. Other than that, they repeated their offensive performance from a week ago by scoring 26 points to defeat the overmatched Cougars. The Indians’ well balanced attack of powerful offense and dominating de-fense was simply too much for their opponent. Offensively, #28 Nicky Delgadillo opened up the game with a 14 yard TD run. Then it was #5 Angel Ramirez’ turn on a 24 yard TD, followed by #32 QB Jason Morago scoring on a 2 yard QB follow. Defensively, the team would have come away with a shut-out as the only score for the Cougars came by way of the Cougars’ “MVP,” the penalty flag. #82 Andrew “Red” Avalos scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone, to fuel the defense. “Rio’s Offensive Player of the Game” is #99 Michael Guerra for doing an excellent job assuming the starting Center position. He led the Line and made all the correct calls. “Guerra’s hard work has put him in a position to succeed,” says Head Coach Jason Morago. “Rio’s Defen-sive Player of the game is #22 Michael Torres. Coach Morago says; “Torres has been consistent for us all year long at the Corner position. He made a couple of key deflections against Hacienda.” The Warriors will face the La Puente Warriors in a battle for the right to the name. It all goes down Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at Grant Rea Park.

DARK TIMES FOR “BLACK” IN COUGAR TOWN!

The Indians’ “Black” team has hit a “Dark Time” in their season. The offense seems to have lost some of it’s explosiveness and the ability to get into the end zone. However, “Rio’s Players of the Game” QB Alex Landeros completed 6 of 8 passes and TE Chris Ortiz had four catches. “Rio’s Defensive Players of the Game” Andrew Ortiz and Adrian Torres pulled seven (7) flags apiece to anchor the defense for the Indians. “Unfortunately, the game did not go well for us, but we will be working hard to right the ship this coming week,” says Head Coach Bruno Torres. The Indians will play the La Puente Warriors “Orange” this Saturday at 12:00 Noon at Grant Rea Park.

Saturday’s game was another great defensive effort as the Indians produced another shut-out and only gave up three 1st downs all game long. The Cougars were coming off a 33-0 win over Charter Oak the week before and looked to have a high powered offense. But as they say, “looks can be deceiving” as was the case. Hacienda did manage to get a play or two as they threatened to gain big yardage on a big sweep play, but “Rio’s Defensive Player of the Game” Dorian Sanchez was there to make a great tackle. “Dorian comes off the bench for us and plays Corner. He does a great job when he is out there and made quite a few tackles on Satur-day,” says Head Coach Steven Rivas. Offensively, the Indians are starting to come into their own. This was the second week they were without starting QB Adrian Lemus, but the offense didn’t sputter. Greg Nevarez assumed the role of QB in the “Spread” offense and threw a 30 yard TD pass to Noah Rangel. The real talk about the offense on that day was the collective play of the Offensive “Rio’s Play-ers of the Game” who were the “Black” offense. The Indians 2nd offensive squad put to-gether an outstanding drive that lasted over 6 minutes of the 2nd quarter and capped it off with a TD run by #5 Gabriel “Gibby” Padilla. The Indians are prepared to play the La Puente Warriors at Grant Rea Park at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
