IMPORTANT FESTIVAL INFORMATION!!! Information Locations

Whenever you need help for any reason or need information, you can go to one of three locations: Phoenix Hall (Registration), the H.S.A. booth in the Mystical Merchants Circle, or at Safety (next to the Pavilion). For general festival questions, we prefer you go to Reg-istration or the H.S.A Public Relations booth. At these two locations you can: see a large map of camp, see notices of schedule changes, announcements, lost & found, as well as other useful information. Registration hours are: Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9:00a to 9:00p, and on Sunday from 9:00a to 6:00p. NO exceptions. You must leave by 5:00p on Monday or be subject to Camp Gaea fees.

Gate Hours The gate is open 24 hours. Please contact Safety for any questions or concerns.

Community Service This service will not only help the Festival run more smoothly, but introduce you to many new people at the same time. Attendees from the ages of 18+ are required to put in 2 hours of service while at the Festival. We do offer the ability for you to bribe out of your community service requirement by paying registration $10 in exchange for your service.

Parking Attendees must park in the designated parking area for the duration of the festival. Park-ing staff will direct vehicles as they enter the site. If your vehicle is parked in a No Parking zone, it may be subject to towing. You are responsible for all fees associated with towing.

Safety/First Aid/Dispatch The Safety / First Aid staff are here to help ensure you have a relaxed and spiritually re-warding holiday weekend. The Safety Center is next to the Pavilion and staffed 24 hours a day. For emergencies at Camp, Safety can be reached on channel 16 through anyone with a radio. In the event of an emergency outside of Camp where someone would need to contact H.S.A. staff during the festival, please have them call the Heartland cell phone at 816-813-8167. Heartland Spiritual Alliance does not assume responsibility for individual personal routine health care needs or medications, which must be met daily by festival attendees. Festival attendees remain solely responsible for their own health and safe behavior during the festival.

Wristbands Upon arrival, you will receive a wristband that must remain on your wrist for the duration of the festival. If it breaks, come to Registration so we can issue a replacement. Wearing your wristband at all times is absolutely mandatory.

FRS/GMRS Radios Please do NOT use Channels 15 through 20 for chatting or tracking down your children. These are for use by specific H.S.A. committees ONLY. If you choose to monitor one of these stations, please be kind and DO NOT TRANSMIT. It is important for your safety and the safety of others around you. Our staff needs to be able to communicate effec-tively with each other in emergency situations.

Disabled Attendees

Heartland Pagan Festival makes reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities. A red wristband will be given to those people with physical limitations or health problems. Those people will receive priority on the shuttles. Wheelchair accessible showers and restrooms are located on site within the bathhouse There is also an interpreter available for people with hearing disabilities.

Shuttle There is a shuttle vehicle for those with mobility concerns. Able-bodied riders will be

Page 5: 2012 HPF Newsletter and Brochure

5

asked to give up their seats to those with red wristbands. Children under 16 must be ac-companied by an adult to ride. If you are in need of a shuttle go to or call dispatch (located in safety next to the pavilion) or to any parking station to request a pick-up.

Water and Ice

Running water is available at the top of the new staircase on the ridge and from a spout on the exterior of the Dining Hall. Bags of ice are available on the south side of the pavil-ion 9-noon & 4-7pm. 20lb bag - $4.50; 6lb bag - $2.00; Ice pops - $0.50 each

Community Fires and Firewood Campfires are permitted only in designated, previously existing fire pits. Under no cir-cumstances may you dig your own fire pit in any other location. However, you can use your own grill. You may not cut down any living trees or portions of living trees for firewood. Please supply your own firewood, as all firewood supplied by Heartland Spiri-tual Alliance is only for the use of Heartland Spiritual Alliance-operated fires and the Bardic Circle in Mystical Merchants area.

Recycling and Trash Trash Pirates will be collecting aluminum, plastic, and glass during festival. For safety reasons, we collect glass separately. You may burn your cardboard or leave it for us. Trash barrels are also provided so please place only proper items in the recycling barrels. Barrels are placed throughout camp and labeled for your convenience. Please have all trash bagged and closed. We collect trash twice daily so when you hear us coming be sure to bring out your trash and recycling to reduce the mounds of trash we’ll be wading through at the end of festival. You may also dispose of garbage in the dumpsters located near Memorial Grove at our Recycle Port. We again will be collecting all gently used camping items (resalable items only please!) that would normally be thrown away and donating them to a local non-profit that helps homeless youth! Remember Reduce, Re-use, Recycle and “Leave No Trace”!

Toilets and Bathhouse Port-O-Potties and hand washing stations are located throughout the camping and mer-chant areas. The shower house is unisex. There is a small, private, handicapped accessi-ble changing and shower area. The shower house will be closed daily for cleaning. Please observe the posted closing times and be patient and courteous to the crew.

Pets

All animals must be in an animal carrier or on a leash at all times. If your animal is found not on a leash, you will be instructed to leash it. If the problem happens again, you will be asked to remove the animal from the festival. Clean up after your pet, and dispose of waste in the trash cans. If your pet becomes a problem you may be asked to remove the animal from the festival.

Silent Auction The generous donations to the silent auction raise money for Heartland Spiritual Alliance. The Silent Auction, located in Merchant Circle, will be open: 10:00a to 6:00p, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and 11:00a to 4:00p Sunday. Winners of action items should pay for and pick up won items at the Silent Auction tent between 4:00p and 6:00p Sunday.

Swimming Gaea includes a 12 acre lake with a sand beach for swimming access. H.S.A. does not provide lifeguards, so swimming is “at your own risk”. NO ONE under the age of 14 may swim without the supervision of an adult. Please be extremely cautious around the lake area. There must also be an adult in all boats going out on the lake.

Sweat Lodge

Stewart “Buffalo” Doty returns to pour water for our Sweat Lodge. Buffalo was adopted by the Shoshone and Utes tribes, and is a Sundancer and Pipe Carrier. Sweats will be

Page 6: 2012 HPF Newsletter and Brochure

6

held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, across the lake and past the beach (see camp map for location). Times and Information about the Sweats, will be posted at Registra-tion. There is no sign-up list. First come, first served. Sweats take approx. 3-4 hours.

Dance and Drum Etiquette The dancers’ circle around the nightly community fire is for moving dancers only. There are benches around the perimeter of the dance circle for observers. The drummers’ area is located on the south side of the dance circle, and is reserved for drummers only. A lead drummer “on duty” will lead the heartbeat each night, so please be respectful while every-one shares their sacred heartbeat in this area.

Departure If you are leaving the property prior to Monday, and do not plan to return, please check out at Registration. If an emergency situation occurs, we do not want to have to search for people who are no longer on property. Thank you for helping us use our resources appro-priately. You should plan on having your area cleaned up, bagging and taking all trash to designated areas, and leaving by 5:00p on Monday. If you plan on camping Monday eve-ning, you will be subject to Camp Gaea fees.

H.S.A. Sacred Experience Rituals Main Ritual Arch

The main ritual arch consists of Opening Ritual, Main Ritual and Closing Ritual and is one continuous working of transformative magic. Spread throughout the weekend, they illus-trate the theme, Dawning of a New Day and set the tone for all the peripheral works present by the Sacred Experiences team.

Guerilla Rituals Look for more intimate, spontaneous works going on throughout the weekend. Notification with times and places will be posted where everyone is sure to see them. Also, look for your Sacred Experiences team wandering through camp gathering up people for rituals that will build community, challenge thinking, and surely expand horizons.

Tapestry’s Edge When you came into the land, you reached into the unknown and came back with a rib-bon bearing the color of one of the four elements of magic. The color represents your elemental ally for the festival – an ally both in support, and in challenge. Whether it is an element that is native to you or not, you are encouraged to explore it and work with it; for as much as you chose the ribbon, the ribbon also chooses you. Is it a reminder of an old friend? A steadfast companion? A forgotten paradox? A splinter of frustration? Through-out the festival, as you wander the land, or as the festival’s appointed guardians of magic wander into you, you may discover many opportunities to explore the edges of your un-derstanding and experience of magic. You may be challenged beyond what you thought yourself capable of, you may find that you are stronger and wiser than you know. We invite you to open yourself to all possibilities, and to risk discovering that no matter what you have learned and experienced on your journey so far, there still remain things to fas-cinate you and to entice you to continue learning and growing. May your Heartland ex-perience bring you to your own personal “dawning of a new day”.

Community Sand Mandala Let your creative energy intermingle with the rest of the festival community. At any point in the festival weekend, add your individual expression to the community sand mandala (located in the Main Hall). Take part in creating a unique piece of community art. Pictures will be taken of the mandala throughout its creation. On the final day of festival, the man-dala will be ritually destroyed and returned to nature for the blessing to be dispersed out-wards to the land and the wider community.

Circle Craft: The Circle Craft Path by Selena Fox

The Circle Craft tradition is a form of Pagan spiritual practice which combines old and new Pagan folkways, Shamanic Wiccan spirituality, cross cultural sha-manism, and transpersonal psychology. This tradition emerged out of the stud-ies, spiritual practices, and experiences of Selena Fox of Circle Sanctuary and others. The tradition began taking form in 1971, with its primary influences being an-cient Greek and Roman Pagan religions; American adaptations of European folkways imported from Scotland, Germany, and Latvia; and American folk magic practices from the Appalachian and Ozark mountain regions.

The Circle Craft tradition was initially known as Circle Wicca during the 1970s, and then was called Wiccan Shamanism during the 1980s and 1990s. At the beginning of the 21st century, Selena Fox changed its name to Circle Craft in order to distinguish it from the many other forms of shamanistic Wicca and Pa-ganism that had emerged in the US and elsewhere.

Central to the Circle Craft tradition is Divine communion in and with Nature, plus the developing and sustaining of spiritual relationships with the Divine both as a great interconnecting Unity, or Spirit, and with the Divine in multiple sacred forms, including Deities, Ancestors, Elementals, and Nature Spirits. Deities hon-ored include both Goddess and God forms. Circle Craft is animistic and practi-tioners also develop sacred alignments with the Spirits of particular plants, crea-tures, and places. The Circle Craft worldview is panentheistic, recognizing the sacred both as immanent, or indwelling, as well as transcendent. Whenever possible, Circle Craft rituals are held outside in natural settings. Nine sacred forces, realms, and directions are invoked and honored in rituals: Earth in North, the physical realm; Air in East, the mental realm; Fire in South, the behavioral realm; Water in West, the emotional realm; Cosmos for Above, the universe; Planet for Below, the biosphere; Spirit in the Center, the all encom-passing spiritual realm and the interconnecting center that is Divine Unity; plus Soul in the direction of Within, and Community in the direction of Around. Ritual Circles are cast clockwise beginning in the North, and usually the main altar is in or near the center of the circle. Circle Craft practice is enhanced by the use of ritual tools. These include, but are not limited to: altar and altar cloth; candles and matches; incense burner and incense; feathers; wand; staff; chalice of water; pentacle and/or dish of salt, soil, or herbs; quartz crystals; sacred art, such as images of Deities; rattle, drum, bell, and other musical instruments; broom; cauldron; seasonal symbols; sacred foods and beverages; divination tools, such as Tarot and Runes; cere-monial garb and jewelry; and spiritual journal and pen. Blades may be used by individual practitioners in personal work and in certain group rituals but are not essential tools in this tradition. The scourge and measure are not used. Most practitioners wear some form of consecrated jewelry, such as a pentacle, or an amulet known as a Spirit bag.

Dress in Circle Craft group rites is diverse, reflecting individual preferences and expressions, with some dressing in robes, some in ancestral folk costumes, and others in street clothes. Color of dress usually reflects one or more hues associated with the seasons. These include black, orange, and indigo at Sam-hain; red, green, white, and gold for Yule; white and red at Imbolc; pastel green, yellow, and lavender at Spring Equinox; bright green, blue, and multi-colors at Beltane; green, gold, and yellow for Summer Solstice; green, gold, and brown at Lughnassad; and yellow, brown, orange, red, and purple for Fall Equinox. Both women and men as part of Spring and Summer festivals sometimes wear garland crowns fashioned from vegetation in season. In the Circle Craft tradition, the spiritual year begins at Samhain and includes the eight Sabbats, plus the celebration of Full and New Moons. Community celebrations of the eight Sabbats are multicultural. Bonfires and ecstatic drum-ming and dancing are usually part of seasonal celebrations. Initiation by a teacher or group is not required in order to be a Circle Craft prac-titioner, but this is an option for those who complete a course of study and meet other requirements, including a preparatory outdoor vigil in a natural setting. Circle Craft principles include: Harm None, Be of Service, and Live in Balance.

An important part of personal and group spiritual work is healing, and one or more modalities may be used to direct healing to others or to self, such as guided imagery, therapeutic touch, work with crystals and herbs, movement, drumming, and chanting. Work with dreams, meditation, and intuition are also important dimensions of Circle Craft study and practice.

Additional information about the Circle Craft tradition has been published in periodicals, books, and on the internet, but much continues to be transmitted by word of mouth and guided experiences at study sessions and festivals. On-line instruction is available through the weekly Circle Craft Study with Selena Fox podcast, which is broadcast live on Tuesday nights, 8-9 pm central and which is archived at the Circle Podcast site: http://circlepodcasts.org Selena also shares some rituals, invocations, meditations, photos, perspectives, and other information on-line via her main page on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SelenaFoxUpdates

Older form of witchcraft look to the Oak, Ash and Thorn, as well as the Straight, Bent and Crooked lines. How can modern witches work with these three pow-ers for magick, evolution and transformation? Learn the differences between prosperity and abundance, and the flow of life. Understand the block we have to pros-perity in each of the seven chakras. Explore how to attract these forces of prosperity into in a healthy, balanced way through rituals, meditations, charms, potions, spellcraft and goal setting. (con’t page 28)

This involves the seven energy centers on the body, known as Chakhras. The energy that radiates out from us, we call the Aura. We teach people to help others cleanse that energy, clean out the Chakhras and balance personal energy with the natural energy of the universe. By balancing the Chakhras, we also can feel better, physically, have more energy and can be more focused. Aura cleansing and Chakhra balancing is something anyone can learn to do. Introduction to Healing Touch presented by Sam @ 2pm – 3pm (Main Hall) Healing Touch is an energy therapy in which practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. The goal of Healing Touch is to restore balance and harmo-nies in the energy system, placing the client in a position to self heal. This workshop will focus on the theory of energy-based healing, introduce the modality of Healing Touch, demonstrate and provide everyone a chance to try a simple healing technique used by Healing Touch. Pagans & Polyhedrals presented by Steve Kenson @ 3pm – 4pm (Flora’s Garden) The American neo-pagan and witch cultures have grown up alongside the tabletop role-playing game hobby and there's considerable overlap between modern pagan culture and the fantasy role-playing culture of games such as Dungeons & Dragons. To what degree have pagan and gaming cultures informed each other, and to what degree do they still? Do pagan gamers have a responsibility to see their spirituality handled re-spectfully in a gaming context or are they "just games"? Do the different cultures have things to share and teach? Join this discussion, led by Steve Kenson, professional game designer and founder of the Temple of Witchcraft. Mists of the Moon by Brian Henke Come dance with me now in the mists of the Moon as our hearts beat the drum to the wildest of tunes Breathe deep the scent of night flowers in Spring filling our lungs with the love that we sing All love is true and it’s truth that we seek in the song that we sing and the words that we speak Yes, all love is true love, as wild as the stars

and can heal or can break these hearts that are ours

So let the cups of our hearts overflow like a spring Let our hearts be as strong as the song that we sing

Let our hearts dance together to the wildest of tunes as the stars spin above us in the mists of the Moon

The Queer Mysteries

by Steve Kenson One of the responsibilities of Gemini Ministry in the Temple of Witchcraft is “the Queer Mysteries”. But what do we mean by “Queer Mysteries” in the Temple and how do we find and explore them? First, I think it’s important to define our terms. “Queer” in this instance means “not of the majority heterosexual norm, but homosexual, bisexual, transsexual, intersexed, etc.” To a lesser degree, it also refers to “kink” or “non-vanilla” sexual practices, regardless of the sex of the people involved. The key element here is “not of the norm” (See why it’s much easier just to use “queer”?) “Mystery” references spiritual experience which opens us up to deeper understanding. As experiences, many Mysteries are tied to who and where we are in life: male or female, young or old, student or initiate, and many more, including sexual identity. The Women’s Mysteries are unique to women simply because they experience things men do not. The same is true of the Men’s Mysteries, or the Mysteries of Coming of Age, which cross over the other two but are also unique to men and women. The Mysteries of Parenthood, of Eldering, and so forth. So it is with the Queer Mysteries: There are things we, as queer people, experience that are unique and a part of our progress and understanding as spiri-tual beings. The reason the Mysteries are Mysteries is because they are experiential, not informa-tional. I can tell you all about the forms of the various Mysteries, but you can only truly understand them by experiencing them, by being initiated into them. A mystical tradition such as ours adds guidance, ritual, and (one hopes) deeper meaning to these experi-ences, making them into a shared part of the tradition. Separation The first true experience of the Queer Mysteries is the sense of separation, of “otherness,” with the realization: “I am not like everyone else.” While all young people go through a period of separation and alienation (from parents, family, society, etc.) the queer sense of separation can be profound. Even in our more open modern culture, some young people still feel “I’m the only one in my community” or “I’ll never find others like me.”

Page 32: 2012 HPF Newsletter and Brochure

32

The Queer Mysteries (con’t from page 31) The separation experience is often imposed from without: How many first experienced their sense of being different because of being labeled as such by peers or even family? For others, the separation experience is initially internal, a realization of difference, slow or sudden. Spiritually, we can acknowledge separation in a number of ways, primarily by simply ac-knowledging its existence and providing vocabulary and symbolism for it. How much eas-ier is it for someone searching for identity when there are role-models available? This way, the person who says “I am not like everyone else” can point to someone or some-thing and say “but I might be like this”. This feeds back into the Mystery of Mentorship (following).

Declaration The “coming out” process is one of the defining experiences of queer life. To one degree or another, queer people have the ability to “pass” in mainstream society, to blend in or become invisible. Thus a declaration is often necessary to make their true nature appar-ent. It is the very essence of and reason for “pride” events (Pagan pride included): making the invisible seen and known, rather than hidden out of shame or self-doubt. More importantly, the declaration is to one’s self, an affirmation of identity and an embrac-ing of all the qualities that led to the initial sense of separation. It acknowledges that the separation is a necessary step and even empowers us to go “outside” what is considered “normal,” not unlike the experience of the shaman, who dwells on the edge of the village and has experiences outside of the normal community. Like other Mysteries of transition―coming of age, or eldering, for example―the Mystery of declaration or coming out can be marked with ritual and acknowledgement by peers and elders within the community. The declarant is recognized for what he or she is and, more importantly, honored for it, and for the courage to declare it before the community. Community Community is the context in which many Mysteries occur, but is also a Mystery unto itself, particularly acceptance into a community (or sub-culture, if you will). Many rites of pas-sage involve initiation into a particular group, whether coven or magical lodge, or clique or team. The Queer Mysteries acknowledge the existence of Queer Community, having character-istics separate from other communities, into which one may be accepted as a member, marking a transition from one stage of life to another. In queer culture in particular, the creation of community is also important, as queer culture has not always been the most supportive of its members, and also faces issues of mainstreaming: Will many of the unique elements of queer culture in its “outcast” or “underground” phases survive broader acceptance of queer people into the mainstream? Should they be preserved in some fashion? Ritual may serve to do this. The Queer Mysteries also acknowledge the idea of Queer Sacred Space: places, times, and circumstances unique and conducive to our Mysteries. Having attended a variety of pagan festivals, rituals, and events, I can tell you there is a clear difference in sacred ritual space created by and for queer people―not better or worse, just more strongly connected to our Mysteries and experience.

33

Mentorship As mentioned, an important element of the Queer Mysteries is the issue of visibility (and therefore invisibility). Much of the struggle for acceptance and civil rights by sexual minori-ties has been a question of becoming visible, casting off veils of shame and making their presence known to the world at large, such that their lives and their needs cannot be easily ignored. It’s one thing when you’re talking about “those people” in the abstract, and quite another when “those people” include people you know: friends, siblings, children, parents, and so forth. A part of this visibility is the connection between previous and later generations of queer people. We are unique in that our culture is not generally transmitted from parent to child: queer kids are primarily born of straight families, and will probably continue to be for the foreseeable future. So there comes a point where a connection must be forged between a fledging queer person seeking identity and understanding and the prior generation, capa-ble of mentoring and passing on their experience and (dare I say?) wisdom. The question of mentorship is a tricky one in queer culture because, particularly in gay male culture: There has long been a predatory association of the relationships between older and younger queer people. Just as in any mentoring or teaching relationship, there is the potential for the abuse of trust and the inherent imbalance of power. Still, queer young people need what their elders have to offer, and queer elders can benefit by shar-ing their wisdom, whether either side knows it or not. Simply living an out and proud life as a queer person can be a form of mentorship: provid-ing a role model and helping to pave the way for those who come after you. But there is the potential for so much more, and an opportunity to write a new chapter of queer cul-ture, where mentorship for new generations is a way of maintaining traditions and history and doing what any generation seeks to do for the next: provide a leg-up to a better life through the transmission of accumulated wisdom. “Don’t make the same mistakes we did,” elders say. “Or, if and when you do, come to us and we might be able to help you out of them.” Eldering The last great Mystery before that of death itself, Eldering is something the queer commu-nity needs, as more and more of its members reach their later years. Just as the older generation serves to mentor the younger, so can the younger generation honor those who came before them and find ways to serve and support their elders Eldering as a sacred Mystery can help fight against the tendency for queer elders to lapse back into the same invisibility from which they emerged and eldering, and the honoring of elders, can provide the link to create a chain of continuity to continue to Mysteries onto the next generation as they experience Separation, make their Declaration, and seek Community and Mentoring from those who have gone before them. They in turn become Elders, and on and on it goes. As in other areas we should “seek to protect the Mysteries, reveal them often” and in so doing strengthen our community and the individuals within it. The Gemini Ministry of the Temple, and I, look forward to this aspect of our Great Work. Steve Kenson is a Founder and Gemini Lead Minister of the Temple of Witchcraft. He has taught at the Between the Worlds Queer Pagan Men’s Gathering and helped to co-found and facilitate Nashua Outright, a youth group for queer teens in southern New Hampshire. Dawning of a New Day – Pagan Community

by Nels Linde

You may know us as long time festivants and merchants at Heartland Pagan Gathering, both of us have attended about fifteen years!. I've taught drumming workshops, and Judy is a perpetual dancer at the fire each night, and a Root Worker. Together we taught the Abotts Bromley Horn Dance [http://www.hawkdancing.com/bromley.html] a few years ago. What you may not know, is up in the MPLS-St. Paul area, we have been leaders in com-munity building with Pagans. This year, as guests of Heartland [http://www.kchsa.org/main/content.php?141-speakers-and-bands]we offer some of the tools and insights we have learned. Visit out Facebook page and check our notes for our Pagan bios, [ http://www.facebook.com/JudyAndNelsLinde ]and while you are there, please 'Like' us! The Heartland Theme this year really attracted us to contribute differently this year, and as guests. In recent years most Pagan communities, organizations, festivals, and even small groups have experienced some kind of internal turmoil, and so have we. Our easi-est reaction to this is to withdraw to personal isolation. We attribute conflict to, “Just poli-tics, Pagans can't agree on anything”. We may have just stuck our head up and tried to get involved in a community just in time to get it bit off, so back we go into the safety of isolation. If you persist and stay involved in community work you often see the same destructive processes repeated over and over. Working together to build a community of support, something beyond ourselves, can seem a hopeless task. Respectful disagreement is a sign of change, and can be a motivator toward moving in new directions. When change can be so beneficial, why does it so often end up being harmful to individuals and communities, instead of an opportunity for growth? Is it an essential truth that Pagans working together is like 'herding cats'? It doesn't have to be. Working together doesn't have anything to do with 'herding', and, have you ever seen film of a pride of lions hunt? Differences don't need to be a source of disruption. Diversity of views in decision making can be a group's greatest asset. There are a whole list of real and specific things we can change about ourselves, and to insist on when working together, that can transform destructive 'politics' into community growth. There are tools, both for individuals and organizations to learn to use to reach that “Dawning of a New Day” . We don't automatically learn when growing up the skills it takes to empower ourselves as individuals, and as groups with a vision and with values. Even with the best of intentions, we can end up mimicking the same destructive environ-ment we may have experienced in our family of origin, or have experienced and accepted to make our way in the world. I am a spiritual being, and experience that as witch and a Pagan. I expect my Pagan path to be that which guides me to a deeper understanding of myself, my community, and spirit. It is that which helps me be a positive force, to offer gifts within all these spheres. If being a Pagan is an excuse for anything, for personal failings, for being unable to serve others, for acting in destructive ways, well then I can't call it part of being Pagan. Excuses are just self realization and change waiting to happen, not part of my spiritual path, not Pagan. Well it is a new day, today. We can start and make personal change and take action that helps to build a Pagan community of support, establish groups that flourish, and that will help all of us blossom. We start by recognizing and practicing the many things we in our hearts know to be essential. Listen fiercely in every conversation you have. Practice patience and respect with every word you speak. Subject ourselves to ruthless self ex-amination, to reach for our highest self, and acknowledge when we fail. Hold ourselves, and everyone we work with in groups, lovingly accountable to our commitments and our shared vision and values. Live from your heart. We hope you will participate in some of our workshops and explore some really simple tools to make a New Day, real. Blessings, Nels Linde

In 1985, there were no Pagan festivals held near the Kansas City area. Interested folks meeting at The Rune picnic formed a group, The Council of the South Winds (CSW). Their first meeting mustered only three people, but the next assembled the first core group of eight, joined by a dozen or so later. These intrepid pioneers put together the first Heartland Pagan Fest, held June 27-29th, 1986. It was held at Camp Hammond, near Lawrence, Kansas as a three day event. CSW repeated the Festival in 1987, at Camp Shawnee near Kansas City with a larger attendance and larger expenses. After much painful debate and delib-eration it was decided that incorporation was needed to effectively manage the financial and liability aspects of the event, and The Heartland Spiritual Alliance (HSA) was incorporated September 19, 1988. 1991 saw HPF move to the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation, near Osceola, Missouri. Featured guests were Stewart and Janet Farrar, on their first visit to the United States. There were over 60 workshops, several rituals, two concerts and the first “Merchants In The Round”. 1992 was the year we came home. Gaea Retreat Center, near Tonganoxie, Kansas, owned and operated by Earth Rising, Inc. was the site for the first HPF that did not have any restrictions on size or activities. HSA membership was instrumental in the rehabilitation of the camp, which had been neglected for many years, with considerable funds and hundreds of hours of labor contrib-uted to repair and upgrade the camp’s infrastructure. We continue that support to this day. Heartland Spiritual Alliance is perpetually working for the community through a variety of educational programs and activities consistent with our Mission State-ment. Besides hosting the Heartland Pagan Festival, we also have a monthly networking and educational group called The Spirit Circle which meets on the third Thursday of every month at Aquarius-Vulcans Forge in Kansas City, MO. Managed by our Sacred Experience Committee, this gathering has free work-shops on a variety of topics of Pagan interest. HSA also publishes a free infor-mational newsletter called The Heartland Spirit.
