The trick is to grab the bricks before they hit you. Taking a look at the list of finalists joining us tonight, we clearly have some master bricklayers among us. Each person, each business who has been a part of the Chamber Awards over the last 10 years has been building the economic foundation for Victoria.

These businesses, these entrepreneurs, over the years have done more than build a business, they’ve built a community people are proud to call home.

So a hearty round of applause to these visionaries who not only artfully dodged and grabbed those bricks but with grace and vision created something unique. We’re proud to claim them as ours and to lend a hand where we can to help them build something extraordinary.

Tonight we invite everyone to step back from laying the mortar and to celebrate what has been built. This is truly a tribute to your innovation, your dedication, your hard work and when all else failed your pure tenacity. Consider this our heartfelt thank you.

At the Chamber, I have the pleasure of interacting with some of Victoria’s best and brightest from around our region every day. It is a never ending opportunity to be inspired and energized by the key individuals that grow those businesses through their accomplishments and drive. Tonight, I invite everyone at this gala event to experience that for yourself and to be equally inspired by the excellence in our midst.

This year’s award recipients range from a business with a single employee to one with well over 300 employees locally, representing a broad cross-section of economic sectors across Greater Victoria. Although we do promise you a night to remember, what you won’t see tonight is the blood, sweat and tears that went into winnowing down the large number of nominations the Chamber received to only 27 finalists. Nor will you see the hard work, tenacity, and determination that each of our award recipients demonstrate daily to get to where they are today. What you will see, is why these individuals and companies were chosen and what makes them truly outstanding.

Message from the Board of GovernorsTerry Farmer believes in giving back. Over the years, our city and province have been the lucky benefactors of his generosity of spirit. The organizations he has pioneered, steered or to which he has simply offered support are diverse and have touched the lives of so many.

How did he manage this and build a single hotel into an iconic local chain? Attitude. It doesn’t take long after meeting Terry to be inspired by his passion and drive. The core values of sustainability, a caring

attitude and a dedication to making a difference in peoples’ lives are integrated into all aspects of his life. Simply walk in the door at a local Accent Inns and the warm welcome and sense of homecoming will soon convince you of this.

As the Chamber, we’d like to say that his success over the years began with his early involvement with the Junior Chamber of Commerce back in the 60s. And it was clearly a sign of his coming achievements when, in 1972, he became the youngest President of the Chamber of Commerce since 1863. Or even that his efforts directing the paths of both the BC Chamber of Commerce and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce played a role. But of course, what it really demonstrates is Terry’s ongoing commitment to working for our community over the last 40 years.

Apparently we aren’t the only ones to notice Terry’s commitment and dedication. He may have to make a little room on his awards shelf for the Chamber’s Lifetime Achievement award - perhaps between his Queen’s Jubilee Medal and Generosity of Spirit Award or perhaps beside his Entrepreneur of the Year award from Tourism Victoria.

It can’t be said often enough, thank you. On behalf of the Chamber Governors, congratulations Terry!

When tax season rolls around each year, Victoria-based chartered accounting firm Green Horwood & Co LLP knows where to turn for help—Greater Victoria’s co-operative education programs. The Chamber of Commerce member has been hiring Camosun College students for 20 years and University of Victoria co-op students for the past five, with very positive results.

As one of several co-op student supervisors at the firm, Keith Smith is also the partner in charge of human resources and hiring. He has seen great advantages to welcoming Camosun and UVic co-op students to the team, especially during the hectic tax season.

“Historically, tax season is a busy time, and students come in ready to work,” he says. “But they do more than bring extra hands to the office—they also bring a younger vibe to the company, including more energy and enthusiasm.”

Blake Bedwal, a University of Victoria co-op student enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program, has only good things to say about his experiences at Green Horwood. This is his third co-op term, and he has enjoyed the unique experience offered by the accounting firm.

“I’ve taken accounting courses at UVic, but haven’t had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience,”

says Bedwal. “In this position, I’m responsible for bookkeeping and tax returns, and I’ve been able to get a sense of what it’s like to work in this field. I’ve really enjoyed being able to learn in such a dynamic environment.”

Greg Lewis, a Camosun College co-op student pursuing the Bachelor of Business Administration, Accounting, was thrilled to secure this work term as his first co-op experience. After working in the hotel and restaurant industry, he has found his job with Green Horwood & Co LLP to be invaluable.

“This has been a complete 180 degree turn around for me,” he says. “Not only have I gained practical experience by working with T4s and T5s, but I’ve been able to learn about how different partners and Chartered Accountants communicate, and to understand how the firm works as a whole.”

Welcoming co-op students onto the team has helped Green Horwood & Co LLP excel during tax season and beyond, while providing students with outstanding experiential learning—it’s a good fit for everyone.

GOVERNORS’ LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDChosen by the Chamber’s Board of Governors


Mr. Terry Farmer, Co-Founder & Chairman, Accent Inns

Terry Farmer knows the power of helping people. After all, if he hadn’t offered to lend a hand to help his father and partner build the Chateau Victoria he might never have realized just how much more fun he could have in hospitality rather than a career in banking, property management or construction.

Anyone who knows Terry, knows that he isn’t content to rest on his laurels. Positive change has been a staple of his life. Terry’s advice to the graduates of Royal Roads at their 2007 Convocation, “… as life moves on over the years do not hesitate to change your area of work should opportunities arise. When they do you should do your due diligence and then strike out quickly, especially if you have a chance to get out on your own and become an entrepreneur. I did this 21 years ago and it was the most thrilling and challenging stage of my career (aside from getting married of course).”

Even when advocating change, it is clear that Terry knows a good thing when he sees it. Born and raised here in Victoria, just as his parents were before him, Terry is a proud Islander. His first foray off island was to UBC in order to get his degree in Commerce, but he soon returned home to Victoria and began his lifelong efforts to make a difference.

Terry began his career of community activism joining the Greater Victoria Junior Chamber of Commerce in the 60s when he was only 22. He continued his relationship with the Chamber and in 1969 became a Director and Vice-President. By 1972, he was acclaimed as President and became the youngest one for the Chamber since its inception in 1863.

Looking to explore and enjoy a little adventure, Terry once again left the island and took off to Montreal. Not surprisingly, he landed on his feet and shortly after joining Royal Trust, his boss saw his potential and shipped him off to Toronto. But Toronto held no charm for him, and after sampling what other great cities had to offer he returned home here to Victoria.

In 1986 Terry Farmer surveyed the tourism industry and identifying a void in the industry, he opened up a motor inn in Victoria. A mere 26 years later, Terry is Co-Founder and Chair of Accent Inns Inc., an award-winning, family-owned B.C. hotel chain. The company is very much a family organization with their head office and hotel property in Victoria as well as properties at five other locations in British Columbia including Vancouver, Kelowna and Kamloops.

During their 25th anniversary, Accent Inns celebration, President and daughter, Mandy Farmer commented on what she loved best about working with Terry, “I love my Dad’s passion. He’s got such enthusiasm and energy. It’s very contagious”.

He’s both enthusiastic and hands on. It’s also clear that Terry is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get dirty to achieve results. After his staff raised the most money of any group for the Power to Be Therapy Society, and in conjunction with a program demonstrating the value of each employee’s job, Terry donned overalls and gloves at his various locations to do work like painting and cleaning toilets at his five locations. His good humour and bigger than life personality were more

than apparent in the YouTube video documenting him demonstrating his expertise as staff “supervised his efforts”.

Terry’s management style is such that he fosters caring workplaces where employees are treated like family and partners. In an industry where high staff turnover is the norm, Accent Inns is proud to acknowledge that 48 per cent of the hotel’s current employees have been with the company for 10 years or more. Farmer has indicated that it is about mutual respect, but it is also about a sense of pride and having fun.

When looking for new staff, human resources looks for the “sparkle-factor” that indefinable inner quality. That policy has resulted in hiring good staff that might have otherwise been overlooked and then investing the time to train and nurture new staff in their roles. He points out that skills can be taught and experience developed, but if the person doesn’t have enthusiasm or inherent friendliness ingrained, these attributes can’t be changed.

The “sparkle factor” is stoked and encouraged by both a caring management style and a caring attitude. Terry has seen the benefits of volunteering first hand and encourages his staff to experience the personal

joys that can bring. His staff rally around a variety of causes such as InnAid and Camp Thunderbird cabins. The management philosophy of Terry, and now Mandy, seems to be working considering that Accent Inns was named by BC Business as one of the top 5 businesses to work for in 2011.

When Terry gets involved in an organization or cause, he doesn’t dally. He provides them with the same thoughtful determination and clear direction that has made him a success with his own business. Terry began giving back to the community even before he established his own business, starting with his membership in the Greater Victoria Jr. Chamber of Commerce in the 60s which led to:

• Director of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (1994-1996)

• 1989 Sportsman of the Year recipient• 1998 Entrepreneur of the Year Award

• 2002 Queen’s Jubilee Medal recipient

• 2005 Generosity of Spirit Award recipient

• 2007 Rotary Community Leadership Award recipient

• 2007 Honourary Doctor of Laws from Royal Roads University

• Inaugural Life Membership distinction – Tourism Victoria (2011)

• Chair - Belleville Terminal Blue Ribbon Task Force (2007)

• Director, Vice-Chair - Pacifica Housing (2009-2012)

The above only name a few of the worthwhile organizations to which he’s lent his talents or who have recognized his efforts. To fully list the boards and organizations he has volunteered for such as the Commonwealth Games, Patrons Council, Greater Victoria Hospital Society, YM-YWCA and the Community Welfare Council, it would take more pages than we have available. And the benefits he has garnered have been immense.

His work with the Commonwealth Games, beyond the games themselves, left a lasting legacy for Greater Victoria. Translating the $10 million provided by the Federal government into the world-class Pacific Institute for Sports Excellence. Through his efforts at Pacifica Housing there have been 150 to 200 new housing units produced for those otherwise unable to afford housing.

His support of locals extends beyond Accent Inns’ staff, events and organizations to the personal level. Terry has often provided mentoring to young people interested in business. His specialty is providing guidance to those that want to become entrepreneurs. He’s delighted to help them get that gem of an idea off the ground by providing advice and cultivating the raw ambition, brains and enthusiasm that are key to any successful business person. As part of his mentoring process, Terry wants to make sure that the next generation of business leaders is well rounded.

“Our society depends on our young people, but we have to encourage them in their efforts. We also have to

encourage our young people to get involved and give back. Join community organizations, give back to our society,” Terry counsels.

Speaking of support and encouragement, Terry modestly indicates that he wouldn’t have been able to achieve this on his own. When asked about what he is most proud of, his ever present grin widens and the accomplishments of his daughter Mandy and son Devlin flow. He mentions the incredible support from his wife Leslie and children as they truly grew up in the hotel business. And over the years that support has grown to the point where Mandy has followed in her father’s footsteps and took up the reins as President and CEO of Accent Inns in 2008.

Somehow knowing Terry and his boundless energy, that just means we’ll be seeing more of his efforts around town as he continues to make Victoria an even better place to live.
