Admittedlyit meant going with mom and her annoying, yuckily young, French boyfriend, Almond. But she knew they would be staying at Almond’s parents’ place—a chateau! Everyoneknows “chat” means “cat” in French—so she couldn't wait. Two whole weeks in a house-ful of cats! Polly love animals! Tragically things never work out as one expects. Insteadof a houseful of cats it turns out to be a houseful of Almond’s annoying, totally weirdFrench family. Maybe if Piranha wasn’t so evil, and Lucien (Almond’s younger brother)wasn’t so cool, things might turn out differently—but before Polly has time to squeak“murder,” she is on the ghastly trail of a heartless criminal. Could Polly Price uncoverthe truth? Well—not if she is the chief suspect, and not if she starves to death trying tofind her way through long, murky corridors to breakfast. She knows she is in a race againsttime, and she doesn’t even have a watch.

There was a lot of talk about God but it was the Devil we really feared. Witches lived in the villages and farms. On nightswhen they gathered to worship, the Devil came up from hell and walked among us, in our fields, on our moors. In thestreet you might brush against a man who had kissed him not a few hours back. Once, some boys showed me a mark onPendle Hill where they said the Devil had walked. It was the print of a cloven foot, like a cow’s only bigger. A few metresfurther on were the remains of a fire. The boys asked me what the Devil looked like and where he had kissed me. When Isaid he never had, they didn’t believe it.

“Burning Issy,” one of them jeered. That was my nickname. But they didn’t dare touch.

It took so little. Just an accusation from a spiteful neighbour and you could be arrested. If you were arrested you wouldbe tortured and if you were tortured you would confess and be hanged. Innocent cottagers, who would have run a mile atthe whiff of witchcraft, had been executed just for knowing how to treat a cold.

I was a mystery. I was brought out of the North when I was only two years old with nothing but my name and a dream offire. No one expected me to live, but I did. That’s the way I mean to keep it.

A Good Clean EdgeVincent Caldey

From the author of the bestselling Last Dragon Chronicles comes a tense, gripping, beau-tifully written rite-of-passage story

“Young adult readers will really appreciate the stylishness of this novel just as much asthey appreciate the social themes and the thriller aspect of the murder story in its latterstages.” —Bookbag

His pretty mouth curls up, the same way as his hair. I hear a kind of click. Something glintsbelow my eye. “Not gonna ask you again,” he says.

“Cut him,” says his mate.

“Shut up,” says the boy. Slowly, he touches the blade to my face. He slides it flat along theside of my nose. “Do you like it?” he says, in a whisper this time.

I don’t, but I nod. I have to agree. I just do what he says. To live. To get away.

“It’s sharp,” he says.

And almost wet against my skin. A tear leaves my eye. Pee trickles down my leg.

“Don’t cry,” he says. He sounds disappointed. But how can I be brave with a blade at my eye?

Vincent already endures a traumatic family life, and now he must face a brand-new school. A school with a bully, who has a knife. Spareand haunting, inspired by Raymond Carver, this tense young adult novel tells the tale of a war of nerves, a dark and tragic turnof events, a good clean edge. This is a compelling coming-of-age story written with style, substance, and passion.
