Sun Conference Tournament Champions. NAIA National quarter-finals. Fourth-ranked team in the nation. Those are just a few of the things the Embry-Riddle women’s soccer team accomplished in 2011. The Eagles’ national quarterfinal appearance marked the best finish for an ERAU women’s soccer team, which also set program records for wins (18), points (210) and goals (73) after finishing 18-3-1 overall and 9-1 in Sun Conference play.

Although they were happy with those achievements, the Eagles, led by sixth-year head coach Samantha Bohon, are anxious to do better in 2012.

“It was a good year for us last year, but if I’m being honest, we fell short of our goals that we set,” Bohon said. “So while we celebrated and appreciated our success there was still this little bit of disappoint-ment, not only from the staff, but from the players.”

Despite losing six seniors to gradation, the Eagles will not be lacking in leadership and experience as nine of the 12 returning players are either juniors or seniors.

“I think our leadership will be the best it’s been in my six years here,” Bohon stated. “We have changed how we approach leadership. We don’t look for one or two people to be the main leaders. What we do is identify a small group of people and say ‘this is what you already naturally do, we are looking to you to do this as a whole for our team.’ I think our leadership is really strong and we have good leadership both on and off the field. I expect them to take this team on their shoulders and go for it.”

Returning for her senior campaign is Mansfield, Texas native Lauren Gallant. For two seasons, Gallant waited for her chance to shine and last season, she worked her way into a starting role and took advan-tage of the opportunity, earning starts in 21 of the Eagles 22 contests. She totaled four shutouts, collected 64 saves on the way to a 75.3 percent save percentage and closed out the year with a 0.95 goals against average.

Gallant has also emerged as one of the teams leaders, leading by example both on and off the field. In addition to being the Eagles’ last line of defense, she was selected as The Sun Conference Champions of Character Award winner for women’s soccer and was awarded the ERAU Champions of Character and Steve & Vicky Ridder scholarships.

“Lauren comes back after her first year of starting and she’s not willing to relinquish that starting spot after getting a taste of it last season,” Bohon said. “It was a competitive environment for her to win the job over then senior Dina (Roper) and I think she did a solid job in the net for us. She’s worked hard over the summer and her experi-ence will be key for us.”

Competing for playing time in goal is freshman Olivia Lynch. A na-tive of Naples, Fla., Lynch played her high school soccer at the Com-munity School of Naples where she was a three-year team captain who recorded 11 shutouts in 17 contests in her senior season. Named the 2012 FACA Player of the Year, she garnered All-State and team MVP honors and led the Seahawks to the 2012 District title.

“Olivia is very athletic, but just a little raw,” Bohon observed. “She just needs some experience. If she takes advantage of finally special-izing in one sport, having been a multi-sport athlete all of her career, we expect her learning curve to be exceptional and pretty quick.”

“Our back line is probably our deepest position on the field,” Bo-hon said of the Eagles defensive unit, comprised of three seniors, two juniors, a sophomore and a freshman.

Leading the way is junior and two-time All-American Tova Torstens-son who Bohon describes as “one of the rocks on our team.” One of only five players who started in all 22 games last season, Torstensson was named a first team All-Conference selection and was a first team NSCAA/NAIA All-American. She also contributed seven points on two goals and three assists, including the game-winning goal against Judson (Nov. 19) that sent the Blue and Gold to the NAIA National Tournament final site in Decatur, Ala.

Back for their final seasons with the Eagles are Allison Schultz, Holly Sandon and Brianna Zangara, and the Eagles are hopeful that junior Rebekka Gisladottir will be back to full strength to make a contribution later on in the season. Schultz’ versatility came into play last season when she was called on to move from the defense to provide depth in the midfield following a season-ending injury to a key midfield player. Schultz, who played in 21 games with 17 starts, is described by Bohon as a “utility player” and her leadership and experience will be key as she transitions to a central defensive position.

Zangara returns to the lineup after sitting out the entire 2011 sea-son with an injury, while Sandon is back after appearing in 10 contests in her first season with the Eagles.

Hoping to break into the starting lineup in the back are freshman Helena Hansson and sophomore Maggie Maier.

Hansson (Eskiltsuna, Sweden) gained her soccer experience play-ing with 2009 Gothia Cup Champion Eskilstuna United as well as the Swedish youth national team, and is a player Bohon describes as “an incredibly sound, physical, talented defender”.

Maier is one of two transfers in the Eagle lineup and Bohon will look to build on the experience she gained having played a year of soccer at Christian Brothers University.

“We have some big shoes to fill,” Bohon said of the Eagles’ midfield that lost three starters, including the entire center midfield to gradu-ation. “That was one of our recruiting challenges, but we feel like we have brought in players that come in with really good experience who should be ready to come in and make immediate contributions.”

The only returning midfielder is sophomore Gabriela Cassariego who saw limited action in 2011, tallying two assists in 11 games off the bench.

“Ange has come in the healthiest and fittest she has ever been,” Bohon said of Durston-Ryan who posted five goals and two assists in 20 appearances in 2011. “She worked really hard over the summer and we are definitely looking for her to get some valuable minutes.”

McCall will also be looking to contribute to the Eagles’ offense. She played as a substitute in 12 contests last season, connecting on one of her three shots on goal.

“Lauren had a really good spring,” Bohon commented. “She fig-ured out how to combine with her teammates and not just be the worker bee up top, just bugging defenses.”

Embry-Riddle will play one of the most challenging schedules in program history in 2012. The Eagles will face five opponents ranked among the nation’s Top 25 according to the 2012 NAIA preseason poll, including top-ranked Lee, third-ranked Lindsey Wilson, fifth-ranked Mobile, 12th-ranked Hastings and 15th-ranked Northwood (Fla.).

“We made a significant and conscious change last year where we said if we are really going to try and grow this program into one of the top, consistent programs in the country, we are going to have to go and challenge those top powerhouses that have been there. We saw the benefit we gained from playing teams like Lee, William Carey and others in season. It helped us in the postseason and in conference, but a lot of the games were at home. This year we’ve added a few more hard games, but now we are on the road a little more; we think that is the next step.”

The Eagles, who are ranked fourth in the preseason poll, open the season at home with a non-conference contest against Southeastern on Aug. 18. After a road match against NCAA I Stetson, the Eagles will travel cross-country to take on Lindsey Wilson and Hastings as part of the Cavalier Tournament hosted by No. 2 Concordia (Ore.), Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

The Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium will once again be the site of the 2012 Habitat for Humanity Invitational. The second edition of the event will feature the Eagles, Lee, Northwood and Oklahoma Baptist

The Eagles will have a chance to preview the site of the 2012 NAIA National Championship when they face William Carey and Mobile in the Mobile Tournament at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Ala. That will be the Eagles’ final tune-up before they open conference play against three-time defending league regular season champion Northwood

With the addition of Thomas (Ga.), the number of Sun Confer-ence schools that sponsor women’s soccer has moved to 12. Subse-quently, the league has opted to go to a North and a South Division in women’s soccer only. The winner of the North Division will take on the winner of the South Division to determine the regular season champion who will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA National Cham-pionship. The regular season runner-up will be the No. 1 seed in the seven-team conference tournament, which begins with the quarterfi-nals on Nov. 1 and concludes with the championship game on Nov. 9. The tournament champion receives the league’s second bid to the 2012 NAIA National Championship.

“Taking on our tough non-conference schedule this season we feel will help us measure how good this team can be,” Bohon concluded. “We’re still working on building this program at the highest level, so we want to go for it.”

a quartet of newcomers in Dana Robins, Janina Helwig, Kristin Sver-risdottir and Katherine Ebbs.

Robins is a junior transfer from Brevard College where she was one of the pioneers of the Lady Titan soccer program. A standout at Flagler Palm Coast High School, Robins tallied 21 points on eight goals and five assists as a sophomore to lead BCC to a 9-4-1 record in the program’s second season of competition.

Helwig is a player that Bohon says is “a natural outside back, who is fit, has really good mobility and likes to tackle.” A native of Freiburg, Germany, she played her prep soccer with FC Freiburg and FC Rimsingen, Ebbs comes in with three years of eligibility after playing is Australia’s W-League. She was a member of the South Australian Sports Institute squad and also played for Adelaide Olympic in the Adelaide Airport Premier League.

Sverrisdottir was a teammate of Gisladottir at the Commercial Col-lege of Iceland. She played in 78 games in three seasons with the KR Senior club team and was a member of the Icelandic U-17 national squad that competed in the Nordic Cup and the European Champion-ship in 2008.

“We have some extremely talented newcomers with Kristin, Kath-erine and even possibly Janina in there.” Bohon said. “Katherine has played at a good level in Australia and Kristin in Iceland. They are two different types of players, which is good because I think they will complement each other really well, and then you have Janina who is more of the workhorse. The midfield is the area that will be most in-teresting to watch as the season unfolds to see how these newcomers come in and absorb that role.”

While the Eagles’ back line will be the deepest position on the field, their front line will be the most experienced with the return of seniors Lauren McCall, Ange Durston-Ryan and Krizzy Meñez and juniors Martine Olsen and Valerie Obita. That group combined for 75 percent (56 goals) of the Eagles scoring in 2011 and the coaching staff will look to them for more of the same in 2012.

“We have a very talented front attacking line returning.” Bohon stated. “We got to see the best front lines in the country at nationals and we felt our front line measured up to anyone there because we don’t have just one go-to player. All three of last year’s starters (Olsen, Obita and Meñez) are extremely capable with tremendous speed, a high level of technical ability. They aren’t just track runners; they’re good with the ball as well. You add the physicality of Martine and its just a really exciting front line.”

Olsen etched her name in the Eagle record books last season, set-ting a single-season scoring record with 27 goals. A third team NAIA and a first team NSCAA/NAIA All-America selection, she added 10 assists to finish with 64 points on the year and her 1.23 goals-per-game average ranked sixth in the nation.

Obita closed out her sophomore campaign with 35 points on 14 goals, including three game-winners, on the way to first team All-Con-ference and honorable mention All-American honors.

Another first team All-Conference selection, Meñez closed out her junior campaign ranked sixth nationally in total assists (16) and 11th in assists per game (.730). Meñez was also tabbed as an NSCAA/NAIA second team All-American and finished with 34 points on her 16 as-sists and nine goals, three of which were game-winners.

HC Head Coach | Sixth Season | Duke (1998)

Following an extensive nationwide search, Daytona Beach native, Samantha Bohon was selected to lead the Embry-Riddle women’s soccer program in 2007, making her only the second head coach in program history.

In five seasons with the Eagles, Bohon has led the Blue and Gold to five consecutive postseason appearances. After finishing third in The Sun Conference regular season standings in 2007 and 2008, the Eagles captured a share of the conference crown in 2009, earning Bohon league Co-Coach of the Year honors. The following season, Bohon won the award outright as the Blue and Gold finished second in a very tight league race.

Embry-Riddle secured spots in the NAIA National Championship as tournament hosts in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, the Eagles defeated tournament favorite Northwood on their home field to claim the con-ference tournament title and earn an automatic bid to the national tournament. A year later, Bohon coached her squad to a repeat of that performance as ERAU took another road win against the Seahawks to return to the national tournament for the fourth straight year.

The 2011 campaign was a historical one for ERAU women’s soccer. The Eagles finished at 18-3-1 overall and 9-1 in conference and came away with their third conference tournament title in as many years in thrilling fashion with a 2-1 victory in overtime against St. Thomas. The Blue and Gold notched a 1-0 home win against Judson in the NAIA Opening Round to advance to the national tournament final site, which featured the 16 Opening Round winners. For the first time ever, the Eagles earned a win in the second round of the tournament and made it to the elite eight before they were knocked out by four-time defend-ing national champion, Lee. Bohon’s squad was ranked fourth in the postseason poll, marking the highest ranking of any women’s soccer team in ERAU history. The Eagles’ accomplishments in 2011 earned Bohon NAIA NSCAA/Mondo East Region Coach of the Year honors.

In her five-year tenure as the Eagles’ head coach, Bohon has had six All-Americans, nine honorable mention All-Americans, one Sun Conference Player of the Year, three league Newcomers of the Year, 23 first-team All-Conference and five second-team All-Conference selections.

Bohon’s teams support the ERAU Athletics Student-Person-Player philosophy. They have performed well in the classroom, garnering NAIA Scholar Team honors with team grade point averages of 3.11 and 3.32 in 2010 and 2011, respectively. Over the last five years, ERAU women’s soccer has produced nine NAIA All-America Schol-ar-Athletes and nine Academic All-Conference selections, as well as three Sun Conference Champions of Character Award winners. Addi-tionally, nine other individuals have been awarded ERAU’s Champions of Character Scholarship, including Lauren Gallant who was The Sun Conference’s selection for the NAIA’s 2012 Dr. Leroy Walker Champi-ons of Character Award.

Prior to taking a two-year hiatus from the coaching realm, Bohon spent four years as an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee (2001-05), where she served as the Lady Vols’ recruiting coordina-tor and was responsible for team defense. During her tenure, the Lady Vols won three South-eastern Conference titles, made three NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances, and were ranked in the Top 10 in three of her four seasons.

In 2003, Bohon man-aged a Lady Vol defense that allowed a program-low 18 goals in 24 matches and set new school records in shutouts (12) and goals against average (0.73). Her efforts on the recruiting trail brought in a class that was

ranked fifth nationally and was tops in the SEC and the Central Region in 2005.

Bohon was also affiliated with the U.S. Women’s National Soc-cer Program from 1998-to 2000. She served as a team captain for the Under 21 National Team and was a floating member of the 1999 Women’s World Cup Residency program. She made two international appearances with the full team, netting a goal against Finland and reg-istering an assist against the Ukraine. In addition, she played for the Raleigh Wings in the W-League, which won a national championship in 1999.

Bohon played collegiate soccer at Duke University where she was a four-year starter from 1994-97. A three-time All-Atlantic Coast Con-ference and All-South selection, Bohon was selected as a Freshman All-American and a third-team All-American by Soccer News and Soccer America. She was a tri-captain for the Blue Devils’ nationally ranked squad and also garnered ACC All-Academic honors.

Over her four-year career, Bohon tallied 38 points on 16 goals and six assists. As a senior, she worked her way into fifth place on the Duke single-season scoring charts after registering 28 points (13 goals, 2 assists).

Bohon continued to contribute to the Blue Devils’ success on the field as a volunteer assistant coach for the 1998 and 1999 seasons. She also interned at the NCAA office in Indianapolis, Ind. where she assisted with the operations of the 2001 NCAA Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships.

AC Assistant Coach | Third Season | Embry-Riddle (2007)Head Coach Samantha Baggett Bohon announced Liam McIlhatton

as an Embry-Riddle women’s soccer assistant coach in the spring of 2010. McIlhatton is no stranger to Embry-Riddle as he played four seasons with the men’s team from 2003-06.

McIlhatton’s impact on the men’s lineup was immediate as he earned a spot in the first 11 as a freshman and kept his job as a starting defensive midfielder throughout his career. He played in every match in his first three seasons with the Blue and Gold and was on his way to doing the same as a senior, but was sidelined by a season-ending injury against Lindsey Wilson in early October. The Scotland native helped the Eagles to four conference regular season and four regional tournament titles and totaled 28 points on eight goals and 12 assists in 67 career appearances. He received All-Conference recognition twice and was named to the All-Region and honorable mention All-America rosters as a junior.

After leaving Embry-Riddle, McIlhatton played semi-pro soccer for St. Anthony’s FC in Scotland. He then went on to combine his knowl-edge of the sport and his experience playing in the United States as a Senior International Sports Consultant for Firstpoint USA. While at Firstpoint, his primary responsibility was finding opportunities for ath-letes in the United Kingdom to get an education while playing their sport at an American institution of higher learning.

In addition to his responsibilities with the ERAU women’s team, Mc-Ilhatton also serves as a girls’ coach with the Ormond Beach Soccer Club and is a coach for West Ham United International Academy in Palm Coast.

McIlhatton completed his undergraduate degree in Communica-tions in 2007 and is currently working towards his Masters of Science in Aeronautics.

AC Goalkeeping Coach | Second Season | Warner (2008)Head Coach Samantha Bohon named Heriberto Aguilar to the

ERAU’s women’s soccer coaching staff in the summer of 2011. A na-tive of Crescent City, Fla., Aguilar is primarily responsible for the de-velopment of the Eagles’ goalkeeping corps.

Aguilar is very familiar with The Sun Conference having played and coached for ERAU’s league foe Warner. Aguilar earned four letters for the Royals after joining Warner’s men’s soccer team in 2003. At the conclusion of his playing career, he continued to be a part of Warner soccer, moving over to the women’s soccer program as a volunteer assistant coach. After working with both the men’s and women’s soc-cer programs as the goalkeeping coach in the 2008 season, Aguilar was named the Assistant Women’s Soccer Coach in December of that year.

In addition to his collegiate coaching responsibilities, Aguilar also

coached at the high school and youth club levels. He has served as the head coach of the varsity girls’ team at Bartow High School and worked with the Lake Wales Fury Soccer Club. In 2010, he helped the U-15 Boys team to the Region C. Cup title and coached their goal-keeper to the Florida ODP team.

“We’re really excited to have Heriberto on our staff,” ERAU head coach Samantha Bohon stated. “He’s had really good experiences both as a player and then as an assistant coach at Warner and did a great job to help improve that program. We’re excited to have him work individually with our goalkeepers.”

Aguilar earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Warner in 2008 and is currently working toward his MBA in Manage-ment. He also holds NSCAA Goalkeeping Level I, Level II and Level III certifications and the NSCAA Professional Development Certificate.

Bohon is also very active in the local community, serving on the Children’s Ad-vocacy Center Board of Advisors as well as the Campus Outreach-Florida Board. She also runs the Embry-Riddle/Saman-tha Bohon Soccer School, which had its inaugural camp season in July 2008.

Upon graduation from Seabreeze High School, Bohon went on to earn her bach-elor’s degree from Duke with a double major in English and Sociology in 1998. She earned her Master of Arts degree in Sport Administration from the University of North Carolina in 2001.

Bohon resides in Daytona Beach with her husband Matt and their son Barres. The Bohon Family is expecting a new ad-dition as their second son, Walker, is due in August. The Bohon Family (L-R): Samantha, Matt and Barres

The Sun Conference, formerly the Florida Sun Conference, is heading into its 22nd season of competition and continues to be one of the most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athlet-ics.

Under the guidance of Commissioner Mark Pope (2011-present), the league sponsors cham-pionships in baseball, men’s and women’s bas-ketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and women’s volleyball.

Sun Conference teams are perennial contend-ers for national titles. In 2011-12, 31 teams made national tournament appearances. The Northwood men’s basketball team, the SCAD Sa-vannah women’s golf team and Embry-Riddle’s women’s tennis team each finished as runner-up in their respective national tournaments. Additionally, the league racked up numerous individual national titles as Embry-Riddle’s Chris Freeman and Patrick Besch and Adrian Bayh won the ITA/NAIA National singles and doubles titles respectively, while the Eagles’ Reta Woodard, Ni-cole Bonk and Crystal Bardge won national titles in track and field.

Individually speaking, student-athletes from The Sun Conference have proven themselves worthy of national recognition year after year. In 2010-11 alone, 68 student-athletes from the league were named NAIA All-Americans, while 96 TSC athletes were also named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes.

The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Original membership consisted of Embry-Rid-dle, Flagler, Florida Memorial, Nova (now Nova Southeastern), Palm Beach Atlantic, St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner Southern.

The name “Florida Sun Conference” was adopt-ed in 1992. The league grew to nine members with the addition of Northwood in 1994. Be-tween 2002 and 2006, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and Flagler moved to NCAA II, but the league was able to recruit new members as Savannah College of Art and Design joined in 2004 followed by Edward Waters in 2006. With the addition of the University of South Carolina at Beaufort, Johnson & Wales, Southeastern, Ave Maria and Thomas (Ga.), along with Edward Waters’ move to the Gulf Coast Athletic Confer-ence, the league membership now stands at 12 schools.

ERAU Women’s Soccer Earns Top 10 RankingAfter posting an overtime win against No. 9 Concordia

(Calif.) and a tie against No. 21 Graceland at the Habitat for Humanity Invitational (Sept. 9-11), the Embry-Riddle women’s soccer team moved up to No. 10 in the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ National Top 25 poll. That regular season ranking matched the highest rating in pro-gram history, which came on Oct. 30, 2001.

The Blue and Gold ended the season ranked No. 4 in the NAIA’s postseason poll.

Olsen Sets Single-Season Scoring Record in Win Over Sand Sharks

Sophomore Martine Olsen vaulted to the top of the Eagles’ single-season scoring charts with two goals in the 10th-ranked Eagles’ 8-0 road shutout over South Carolina Beaufort on Oct. 26. Olsen tied the record set by ERAU All-American Elina Johansson in 2009 with the Eagles’ second goal of the match and claimed the record outright with the game’s third. Olsen closed out the sea-son with 64 points on 27 goals and 10 assists.

ERAU Takes Second in Conference RaceFor the second year in a row, the Embry-Riddle wom-

en’s soccer team finished second in The Sun Conference regular season standings with a 9-1 league record. The Eagles’ only loss in conference play was to league regular season champion Northwood.

Seven Eagles Named to All-Conference Honor Roll

The Embry-Riddle women’s soccer team placed seven individuals on the 2011 All-Sun Conference team. The Eagles’ front line of Martine Olsen, Valerie Obita and Krizzy Meñez all garnered first team honors, as did mid-fielders Cecilie Henriksen and Bjorg Olafs and defenders Tova Torstensson and Charlotte Edeland. Additionally, Lauren Gallant was tabbed as the league’s Champions of Character Award winner.

Eagles Claim Third Straight Conference Tournament Crown

By virtue of their second place finish in the conference regular season standings, the Eagles were seeded sec-ond in the six-team league tournament and subsequently

received a bye in the first round. ERAU’s semifinal op-ponent was SCAD Savannah, a team that the Eagles had managed to score just once against in three prior post-season meetings. During the regular season, the Eagles held the Bees scoreless with a 2-0 win and continued to dominate SCAD in the postseason, blanking the third-seeded Bees 3-0 to advance to the title game.

The match-up for the championship was somewhat of a surprise as fourth-seeded St. Thomas registered a 2-0 upset of top seed and seventh-ranked Northwood in the other semifinal. The Eagles, who were prepared to go on the road to face Northwood as they had in the two prior seasons, were given the chance to host the Sun Con-ference championship game for the first time in seven years.

The Eagles got the first goal of the game in the ninth minute when Cecilie Henriksen’s corner kick was headed to Krizzy Meñez who flicked the ball over STU goalkeeper Ariana Lorenzo for the 1-0 ERAU lead.

Playing strong defense for much of the half, the Eagles were able to keep the Bobcats off the board until the 44th minute when Monica Lozano drew St. Thomas level with an unassisted goal.

The score remained deadlocked through regulation and the first overtime period. In the 105th minute, Valerie Obita played Charlotte Edeland in on the left side. The ERAU freshman dribbled past a pair of Bobcat players into the box where she was brought down by the last de-fender, resulting in a penalty kick opportunity. Henriksen stepped up and buried the penalty kick to give the Eagles

their third consecutive conference tournament title and propel them into the national tournament.

Eagles End Season in Elite EightAfter winning the conference tournament, the Blue

and Gold earned an automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament, and a No. 9 ranking in the pre-tournament poll gave the team the right to host a National Tourna-ment Opening Round contest. ERAU drew 15th-ranked Judson in its Opening Round game. ERAU out-shot Jud-son 20-8 and a first-half goal by Tova Torstensson gave the Eagles their second-ever first-round win and secured a spot in the round of 16 teams at the final site of the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship in Deca-tur, Ala.

ERAU Trio Garners Academic AccoladesLauren Gallant, Martine Olsen and Bjorg Olafs were

all named to the 2011 Academic All-Sun Conference team. Gallant and Olafs were also recognized as NAIA All-America Scholar-Athletes, while Olsen was tabbed as a first team Capital One Academic All-American. Gallant, the league’s Champions of Character Award winner has a 3.87 grade point average in Aeronautical Science, while Olafs carries a 3.6 GPA in Civil Engineering. Olsen, who also garnered Capital One Academic All-America second team recognition, has a 3.903 GPA in Business Admin-istration.

Torstensson Headlines ERAU All-AmericansJust five days after the Embry-Riddle women’s soccer

team completed its run at the 24th Annual NAIA National Championship, members of the squad were recognized as All-Americans for their individual performances through-out the 2011 campaign. Sophomore Tova Torstensson was tabbed as a second team All-America selection, while another sophomore, Martine Olsen, garnered third team honors. Three other Eagle student-athletes also re-ceived honorable mention, including Bjorg Olafs, Valerie Obita and Cecilie Henriksen. The Eagles also placed four on the 2011 NSCAA/Continental Tires NAIA Women’s All-America Team announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association. Torstensson and Olsen were first team selections, while Meñez and Henriksen earnd sec-ond and third team recognition, respectively.

Bohon Named NSCAA/Regional Coach of the Year

The National Soccer Coaches Association of Ameri-ca (NSCAA), announced Embry-Riddle women’s soc-cer Head Coach Samantha Bohon as the 2011 NAIA NSCAA/Mondo East Region Coach of the Year. Bo-hon led the Eagles to one of the best finishes in ERAU women’s soccer history in 2011 as the Blue and Gold won its third consecutive conference tournament title and advanced to the NAIA National Quarterfinal for the first time ever. Bohon also achieved a milestone midway through season, getting her 50th win as the Eagles’ head coach. Bohon hit the mark with the Eagles’ 4-2 win over St. Thomas on Sept. 30.

Eagles Post Record-Setting Season in 2011In addition to Martine Olsen’s single-season scoring

record, the Eagles set several new program marks as a team. At the NAIA National Championship final site in Decatur, Ala., the Eagles toppled Olivet Nazarene 3-1 to advance to the quarterfinal round for the first time ever.

The Eagles fell to four-time defending national cham-pion Lee in the quarterfinal round and closed out the sea-son with a program record 18 wins (18-3-1). The 2011 squad also set single-season records for points (210) and goals (73).

DAYTONA BEACH - HOME OF THE EAGLES

Daytona Beach is an ever-changing city of more than 61,000 residents. Located on the “Fun Coast” of Florida, the principal city of Volusia Coun-ty, it has become one of the premier destination spots in the Southeast Region. Despite its continuous growth, it has maintained the spirit and serenity of a small, close-knit beach community.

The city is a year-round family-friendly resort area, which hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, most notably Speedweeks in early February, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in October and Spring Break throughout March.

Home to four colleges and universities, Daytona Beach boasts an excel-lent quality of life and is a city that thrives and celebrates the diversity of its community.

Located less than an hour from Orlando and an hour and a half from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach residents have ample opportunity to expe-rience both cities’ entertainment options, including Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Orlando Magic and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Daytona Beach continually exhibits its love for sports by hosting numer-ous local and national athletic events at the Ocean Center and Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Daytona Beach boasts three major sports franchises in NAS-CAR, the LPGA and the USTA. The Daytona International Speed-way is one of the most recognizable racetracks in the world and features the Daytona 500, Coke 400 and numerous other auto racing events. The LPGA and USTA Florida both claim Daytona Beach as their organizational headquarters.

The beaches of Daytona rank sixth for beach destinations in the United States. Every year, millions of vacationers flock to the Atlantic Ocean and Daytona Beach to experience the sandy beaches in Volusia County. The hard packed sand allows motor-ized vehicles to drive right onto the beach.

Daytona Beach is located a short, 55-mile drive away from the Vacation Capital of the World: Orlando, Florida. Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios, as well as the NBA’s Orlando Magic. Daytona Beach is also just 91 miles from Jacksonville, the 11th-largest city in the United States.

The average yearly temperature in Daytona Beach is 70.4º F (21.3º C), making for a warm and pleasant climate in which to live. Winters are mild and summers are warm thanks to its lo-cation on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, an estuary which flows between the beachside and the mainland.

Daytona Beach boasts more than 200 restaurants, including barbecue, Mexican, Oriental, Greek, Indian, Italian, Thai, sea-food, Cuban, health and natural foods.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the world’s oldest, largest and most presti-gious university specializing in aviation and aerospace. The curriculum covers the opera-tion, engineering and research of modern aircraft, alternative vehicles and clean energy systems and the management of aviation and aerospace organizations.

Approximately 34,000 students pursue degrees from among 40 degree programs at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and at more than 150 education centers for working professionals in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Embry-Riddle also offers online coursework.

Embry-Riddle’s worldwide reputation for academic excellence draws students from all 50 states and nearly 90 nations.

The 185-acre Daytona Beach campus, located next to Daytona Beach International Airport, has 4,600 undergraduate and 610 graduate students. Excellent flying weather and the resort communities surrounding the Daytona Beach campus offer students an outstanding environment in which to study, fly and enjoy numerous recreational and cul-tural activities. The campus is within an hour’s drive of the Kennedy Space Center and the Space Coast and within easy reach of Orlando and Jacksonville, which offer a menu of arts, culture, theme parks, shopping and professional sports.

HistoryOn Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer

John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Com-pany at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education.

After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance.

In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dol-lars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled

the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to world-class status.

AcademicsEmbry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Asso-

ciation of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor and master levels.

At many public universities, freshmen and sophomores are taught by graduate as-sistants, but not so at Embry-Riddle. Classes, which average 25 students, are taught by faculty who are accessible to students in class, during office hours and through university-wide voice mail and e-mail.

HousingEmbry-Riddle’s on-campus housing is an integral part of the university experience.

It gives students the opportunity to develop lifelong friendships and to appreciate the unique values that everyone brings to this diverse institution.

1In September 2011, the “Best Colleges” guidebook published by U.S. News & World Report ranked Embry-Riddle’s undergraduate Aerospace Engineering program No. 1 in the nation. Embry-Riddle was also named to the top tier of universities granting mainly bach-elor’s and master’s degrees.

3Embry-Riddle has three campuses: - traditional, residential campus-es in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and the Worldwide Campus provides educational opportunities to working adults at more than 150 locations in the United States, Europe, Asia, Canada and the Middle East.

14 The student/faculty ratio at the Daytona Beach campus is 14-to-1 and the average class size is 25.

23Embry-Riddle offers 23 undergraduate degree programs adminis-tered by the Colleges of Aviation, Arts & Sciences, Business Engi-neering. ERAU also offers 10 graduate degrees, as well as doctoral programs in Aviation and Engineering Physics.

4579 The undergraduate enrollment at Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus is 4,579. Of that number, 14 percent are international stu-dents representing 121 countries.

Embry-Riddle’s 100,000 plus alumni include five astronauts5

Students can choose from eight housing styles ranging from suites to efficiency apart-ments to traditional residence hall designs. All campus student rooms have telephone service, Internet access and satellite TV connection. Lounges, study and meeting rooms, game rooms and other common areas are available to all.

The housing facilities are enhanced by four campus dining locations, a fitness center and recreational facilities.

Extracurricular ActivitiesThe Student Activities Office coordinates numerous special events, such as comedy

shows, concerts, plays and weekly movies, as well as on-campus clubs and organizations. Students can choose to get involved in more than 150 professional organizations, sports clubs, fraternities, sororities and special-interest clubs.

The university also gives students opportunities to work part time while pursuing a degree. The Student Employment Office helps place students in jobs on or off campus. Job opportunities are available regardless of financial need and allow students to gain self-confidence, important time-management skills and valuable employment references.

After GraduationInternships and co-operative education opportunities, available through the univer-

sity’s Career Services Office, enable students to gain valuable experience in their chosen field. In many cases, students have been offered full-time jobs as a result of an internship or co-op experience. The Career Services Office also has a placement program for gradu-ates of the university. Counselors are available to help refine resumes, hone interviewing skills and help explore job opportunities within a vast network of companies.

The Industry/Career Expo held each November has become the aviation industry’s hiring event of the year. The expo attracts hundreds of recruiters from top companies looking to hire the university’s graduates. Professionals with an Embry-Riddle degree en-joy a variety of career options. Graduates have gone on to train as astronauts, fly planes, manage airports, design mechanical systems and serve as bank administrators. Included in the ranks of the Embry-Riddle alumni are six astronauts, a former U.S. congressman and a former White House Fellow.

Dr. John P. Johnson Embry-Riddle University President

John P. Johnson was appointed as president of Embry-Riddle in 2005 after serving as the university’s provost and chief academic officer. Under his leader-ship, research has expanded and new degree programs have been created in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and global security/intelligence studies, as well as Ph.D.s in aviation and engineering physics. The university is also pursuing a global strategy to take its aviation and aerospace expertise over-

seas. Before joining Embry-Riddle, Johnson served as provost and vice president for academic affairs

and professor of biology at Texas A&M University, Texarkana. In other positions he was dean of the College of Health Professions and professor of Physical Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina; dean of the College of Professional Studies and professor at Northern Kentucky; professor of Speech and Hearing Science and department chairman at Lamar; and clinic director and assistant professor at Bowling Green State.

Johnson has taught courses at all levels in the fields of biology and speech and hearing science. In addition, he has published extensively in his discipline and has been a tenured full professor at four universities. He has been successful in developing new degree programs, increasing enrollment, enhancing scholarly productivity and improving the internal climate and collegiality between faculty and administration at several institutions.

Johnson earned a B.A. and an M.S. from Florida State University and a Ph.D. from Kent State Uni-versity. He completed post-doctoral programs of study in academic administration at Texas A&M Uni-versity in College Station and at the Budget and Control Board’s Executive Institute in Columbia, S.C.

Born and raised in Kensington, Maryland, John Phillips came to Daytona Beach in 1989, enrolling as a student at Embry-Riddle University. Phillips played baseball for the Eagles for three seasons, while completing both his undergraduate (B.S., 1990) and graduate degrees (M.S., 1992).

In 1997, Phillips returned to Embry-Riddle as the University’s first-ever Director of Sports Marketing and Promotions. In his current role as Associ-ate Director of Athletics, Phillips supervises the day-to-day functions of the athletic department, including facilities, game management, sports informa-tion, sports medicine and sports marketing for the Daytona Beach campus.

During his tenure at Embry-Riddle, Phillips has served as the tournament director for nine NAIA national championships that Embry-Riddle has host-

ed, including five for golf and four national soccer tournaments. In 2008, the NAIA honored him with the Charles Morris Award as the NAIA’s National Athletic Administrator of the Year.

Under his direction, the Embry-Riddle sports marketing and promotions staff has earned 11 NACMA awards, including six gold medals for things such as “best student promotion” and “best targeted group promotion.” Phillips also serves as chariman of the NAIA-NACMA Advisory Board and has been a featured speaker on topics related to sports marketing at each of the last five NAIA conventions. At the

2009 NACMA Convention in Orlando, Phillips was invited to present on “Big Time Promotions on a Small-Time Budget” and two separate presentations on Social Networking.

The sports information staff at Embry-Riddle has also garnered national attention during his tenure, capturing over 40 CoSIDA awards for Excellence in Publications and his staff has been honored with the NAIA’s Gary Spitler Award for the best overall sports publications in the NAIA four times.

In addition to his duties at Embry-Riddle, Phillips has become one of Central Florida’s most ac-complished sports broadcasters. He has served as the voice of Embry-Riddle basketball for the last 14 seasons and has also served in the same capacity for the Eagles baseball team since 1999. Phillips spent five years as the PA announcer and radio voice of DeLand High School football and currently works for WNDB-1150 AM in Daytona Beach, broadcasting Volusia County high school football. Phillips has also worked for a number of local radio stations WSBB (New Smyrna Beach), WNDA (DeLand) and WELE (Ormond Beach) and was selected to broadcast the 1A and 6A Florida state championship football games from the Citrus Bowl in 2009. He has also done broadcast work for Bethune-Cookman, Georgia Southern, Lewis-Clark State, MidAmerica Nazarene and the Daytona Cubs.

Phillips and his wife Ann, who serves as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Florida, are parents of 11-year-old twins – Lauren and Zachary and eight-year-old daughter Rachel. The Phillips family resides in Ormond Beach.

JOHN PHILLIPS, Associate Director of Athletics

JOHN mark adkison, assistant director of athleticsJohn Mark Adkison, who is entering his 10th year at Embry-Riddle, is the

Eagles’ Assistant Director of Athletics. His responsibilities include manag-ing the Department’s fundraising efforts, managing the merchandising and licensing program and overseeing the Academic Enhancement and Hall of Fame programs. In addition, Adkison serves as a liaison for the Student Ath-lete Leadership Team and the Champions of Character program.

Prior to Embry-Riddle, Adkison spent time as the LPGA Senior Marketing Coordinator, as well as the Championship Events Coordinator, Marketing Coordinator, and a Sports Information Intern all for the NAIA.

Adkison is also active in the local community. He volunteers at St. James Episcopal School in Ormond Beach as the middle school basketball coach,

serves on the FUTURES Foundation Board and is the Chair of the Missions Committee at Christ Com-munity Church. He has also served as the basketball coach at the Dudley Founation Basketball Camp in Vernonia, Oregon, a camp specialized for children with type one diabetes.

Adkison earned his master’s degree in Sports Administration from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill in 2001 and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Taylor University in 1993. He and wife Candace reside in Daytona Beach with their daughter,Georgia Grace.

STEVE RIDDER, Director of AthleticsSteve Ridder has been at the helm

of the Embry-Riddle athletic program since the 1993-94 season, oversee-ing major changes in the department. During his tenure, Ridder has posi-tioned Embry-Riddle among the elite athletic programs in the nation. The University has increased its number of varsity sports offered from five in 1994, to its current level of 17, and the athletic department staff has grown

from five full-time staff members in 1993 to 41 today. The 2009-10 season marked one of the most suc-

cessful campaigns in Embry-Riddle Athletics history. ERAU Athletics has consistently been one of the best programs in The Sun Conference and in the NAIA and 2009-10 was no different as the Eagles captured con-ference regular season titles in 12 of their 13 sports programs and competed in 13 national tournament events. In 2010-11, the Eagles’ collective successes on the national stage resulted in a program-best second place finish in the NAIA Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings and their unprecedented dominance in league competition afforded the Blue and Gold its 12th consecutive Sun Conference Commissioner’s Cup title.

2011-12 proved to be another banner year for the Embry-Riddle athletic program with the Eagles captur-ing their 13th straigh Sun Conference Commisioner’s Cup, finishing third in the NAIA Learfield Sports Direc-tors’ Cup race and sending 11 teams to their respective national tournaments.

Aside from the Blue and Gold’s success on the playing field, Ridder may be most proud of what the student-athletes have been able to achieve in the classroom during his tenure. The entire ath-letic program combined for a 3.043 grade point average last year, which is higher than the general student body at Embry-Riddle for the 12th-straight year. In addition, more than 250 student-athletes have garnered Academic All-Conference accolades, over

100 have been recognized as Daktronics/NAIA Scholar-Athletes and over 10 have received the prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-America award.

Ridder has also received personal honors for leading the ERAU athletic program. He received the highest NAIA honor of Athletics Director of the Year for 2005-06 and was recognized at the 66th Annual NAIA Convention held in Kansas City, Missouri. He has also been named the NACDA-NAIA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year three times, with the most recent honor be-ing bestowed in June 2007, and has been honored as “Athletic Administrator of the Year” by The Sun Conference on eight oc-casions (1994, 1998, 1999, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011).

The awards he has received are synonymous with Ridder’s character and passion for Eagle Athletics. They recognize the ef-forts of athletic directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to campuses and their surrounding com-munities.

Ridder has developed, designed and overseen many improve-ments, which have fostered the success of athletics at Embry-

Riddle. Among those enhancements are the addition of the Sports Information Office and the start of women’s athletics with volley-ball in 1995. In 1998, he oversaw the implementation of wom-en’s soccer and in 1999 women’s tennis was established, while women’s golf, men’s cross country and women’s cross country followed in 2000. Varsity sport opportunities were increased to 16 with the addition of men’s and women’s track in 2004-05 and will move to 17 when softball begins competition in 2012-12.

Ridder believes in giving his coaches and staff top-level fa-cilities to achieve success and he has certainly worked hard to make Embry-Riddle’s facilities among the best in the nation, pri-marily through his successful campaigning. Under his watchful

eye, Eagle Athletics has gone from playing and practicing at various venues in the local community to finding a home on campus with state-of-the-art facilities, which include the ICI Center for volleyball and basketball, the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium, the Ambassador E. William Crotty Tennis Complex, the Sliwa Stadium for baseball, and the Embry-Riddle Track & Field Complex.

Ridder’s guidance and leadership has attracted tremen-dous respect within the NAIA and this admiration has allowed Embry-Riddle to host eight national championships including men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s soccer.

Ridder is in his 22nd year as head basketball coach for Em-bry-Riddle and has led the Eagles to the NAIA National Tour-nament 11 times, with eight Sun Conference regular-season championships, as well as eight conference tournament titles. In 2000, Ridder’s squad captured the school’s first national championship. His squads are regularly ranked among the top 20 nationally, holding the number one ranking during the entire 2000-01 season, and have produced 28 All-Americans

and nine All-America Scholar Athletes.Ridder earned his master’s degree in Physical Education/

Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University and his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Berea College.

Ridder and his wife, Vicky, have four children: Ryan, Rachel, Rob and Reed. The Ridder family resides in Ormond Beach.

The Braddock Education Success Team (BEST) Program was incorporated into the Embry-Riddle Athletic Program during the 1999-00 academic year. The BEST Program is a branch of the Braddock Foundation, which was established by Robert & Lois Brad-dock. It is currently sponsored by their daughter and Spruce Creek Fly-in resident, Che-rie Keemar, and was initiated by her late husband, Michael.

The BEST program offers tutoring and mentoring programs to assist student-athletes in managing their time between academics, athletics and social development. One of the fundamental components of the BEST Program is Study Hall, which is for student-athletes who are required to attend according to stipulations set by each respective team’s coaching staff. Study Hall is a place where tutors and mentors are available for student-athletes throughout the academic year. With its clearly defined criteria and rules of conduct, Study Hall strives to provide a structured environment that will benefit

student-athletes by improving study habits, honing focus and providing one-on-one learning opportunities. It is not intended to be a substitute for regular class attendance and routine study, but is designed as an essential tool to help student-athletes achieve their academic objectives.

Dave Therneau serves as the Academic Enhancement Coordinator of the BEST Program. He and other BEST Program staff members oversee the daily operations of the Academic Advancement Center where all students, including athletes, can go and receive tutoring in many of the courses and subjects that are part of the curriculum at Embry-Riddle.

Embry-Riddle is in the process of constructing a new College of Arts & Sciences building. In it will house a 9,000 square foot facility dedicated to the University’s Aca-demic Achievement Center, which includes the BEST Program.

The Embry-Riddle Sports Medicine Department provides ERAU student-athletes with the best medical care possible following an injury, to return the athlete back to school and competition as soon as possible in the safest manner. The areas of em-phasis for the Sports Medicine Department are injury prevention, injury evaluation, treatment, and injury/health education. We dedicate ourselves to providing a safe environment for our athletes to compete in.

Treatments, injury care, taping, practice, and game preparations are performed in the 1,000 square-foot athletic training room. Adjacent to this room is the 400 square-foot athletic training rehabilitation room. These rooms have a variety of equipment to provide the best care and rehabilitation possible for ERAU student-athletes.

The Champions of Character initiative was established by the NAIA to help promote the “right thing” by those affili-ated with sports both inside and outside the sports setting. In so doing, the organization looks to develop exemplary character and sportsmanship in NAIA competition.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. This program educates and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and returns integrity to competition at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society.

Under the guidance of Assistant Athletic Director John Mark Adkison, who serves as ERAU’s Champions of Character liaison, the Embry-Riddle Athletic Department has enthusiastically embraced the implementation of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative. For years the department has sought to instill in student-athletes the very values addressed by the movement.

Embry-Riddle’s intercollegiate teams participate in Champions of Character events throughout the school year, including:• Elementaryschoolreadingprograms• HabitatforHumanity• FoodBringsHope• Beachclean-up• Children’sHomeSocietyChristmasDrive• Embry-RiddleHousingmove-in• ServingThanksgivingdinnertothehomeless

In addition to these events, the department instituted a Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) that assists in the planning of Champions of Character events within the community.

Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the high-est standards while administering first-rate athletics programs.

With its major emphasis on education and character development, it was natural for the NAIA to further strengthen academic eligibility requirements in the 1980s. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a 2.0 grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a term-by-term basis.

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper bal-ance with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport.
