Coach Waters and the student-athlete availability varies due to training and travel schedules. However, Monday through Wednesday typically are the best days to speak with them during the week.

Harry pritcHett running parkAll University of Alabama home meets will be staged at the Harry Pritchett Running Park. If you require parking to cover an event at the facility, please contact Doug Walker at least a week in advance.

Directions to Harry Pritchett Running ParkFrom the University of Alabama campus: Take Paul Bryant Drive east to Route 82. Go east on Route 82 and make a left on 15th street. Proceed east on 15th street and continue until exiting to the right at the University Arboretum exit. Go straight off the exit and follow the road as it curves down the hill. When the road splits at the bottom of the hill, go right into the course entrance.

From east and west of Tuscaloosa: Take I-20/59 to Exit 73 for Route 82. Go west on Route 82 through several traffic lights to 15th Street. Make a right on 15th Street and continue until exiting to the right at the University Arboretum exit. Go straight off the exit and follow the road as it curves down the hill. When the road splits at the bottom of the hill, turn right into the course entrance.

ua video Feeds/televisionThe University of Alabama, through the Crimson Tide Sports Network (CTSN), offers a FTP site that provides up-to-date interviews with coaches and athletes, taped video highlights and narrated tape packages from September through May. On occasion, the cross country team is featured in this package. Please call the Communications Office for more details at 205-348-6084. During the fall, the cross country team’s progress will be covered on “Crimson Tide This Week,” a 30-minute weekly regional sports show.

The Ferguson Center was completed in 1973. Plans at the time called for the building to be constructed over Woods Hall, but it was built slightly to the north thanks to a student campaign to save the art building.

The University of Alabama’s director of athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically and has undergone an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure.

Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports.

Moore’s dedication to and love of the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when, as a permanent tribute to his life-long contribution to the University of Alabama, the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama

Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced national championship teams in football (2009 and 2011), gymnastics (2002, 2011 and 2012), women’s golf (2012) and softball (2012) and Southeastern Conference championships in football, basketball, baseball, gymnastics, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s cross country and softball.

Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Athlete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.

In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore also has made a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee, and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum.

Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinction of being a part of nine national championship football teams as a player, coach and athletic director (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, 1992, 2009, and 2011), 16 SEC championships, and 38 bowl trips. He is the only individual connected with the Tide program to be a part of nine national football championships.

In 2011, he was elected to the State of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame for his accomplishments as a coach and an administrator. The National Football Foundation then named Moore its 2012 John L. Toner Award winner, which goes annually to the athletic director who has “demonstrated superior administrative abilities and shown outstanding dedication to college athletics and particularly college football.”

During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis and Phoenix Cardinals. At Alabama, Moore started as coach Bryant’s graduate assistant

before becoming quarterbacks coach from 1971-82, also serving as the Tide’s

A 1963 graduate of the University of Alabama, Moore holds both an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a 1964 Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the Capstone. A native of Dozier, Ala., he was married to the former Charlotte Davis of Tuscaloosa for 41 years before she passed away after a long illness in 2010. He has one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

Dr. Judith L. Bonner was named the 28th president of The University of Alabama on Nov. 1, 2012. Founded in 1831, the University is the state’s fl agship and a student-centered comprehensive research university.

Dr. Bonner recently served as interim president from March 5 until Aug. 31, 2012. She was promoted to executive vice president and provost on April 1, 2006, after serving as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs since March 2003. During the decade she served as provost, the University underwent transformational change growing from 19,000 students in 2003 to more than 33,600 in 2012. Each year, the academic strength of the student body and the faculty exceeded the record set the previous year.

Alabama’s athletics programs likewise have excelled in recent years with four teams winning national championships in 2011-2012. Athletics Director Mal Moore lauds Dr. Bonner’s commitment to athletics as well as academics. “Dr. Bonner has long been a supporter of Alabama athletics and I am excited about her leadership of our great University. We have a unique unity on our campus, a special bond between our athletics program and the University at-large. Dr. Bonner’s leadership will only serve to enhance that relationship and the unity that has been such a vital part of our athletics and academic success over these many years,” Moore said.

Dr. Bonner joined the faculty at The University of Alabama in 1981 as associate professor and head of the department of human nutrition and hospitality. She served as assistant academic vice president from 1985-1990 and as special assistant to the president from 1989-1991. Promoted to professor in 1988, she was named dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences in 1989 and held that position until 2003. Prior to coming to UA, she held faculty appointments in the department of pediatrics at UAB and the department of medical dietetics at The Ohio State University.

Dr. Bonner earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The University of Alabama and her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University, all in nutrition. Her research, focused on nutritional needs of chronically ill children and on eating disorders, has resulted in numerous publications.

Dr. Bonner is an active member of civic, scientifi c and professional organizations. Among other awards and honors, her accolades include the Distinguished Alumni Award from The Ohio State University, the AHEA Leader Award and the award for Outstanding Dietitian for the state of Alabama.

Head coach Dan Waters enters his second season at the helm of the University

foundation for the future of his men’s cross country and distance program with an extremely young squad in 2012. The Crimson Tide’s roster features only one returner in sophomore Matt Joyner and 11 freshmen with impeccable high school credentials but an obvious lack of collegiate experience. “The fact that Matt [Joyner] got some experience last season will show this season,” Waters said. “We’re also extremely excited to get a bunch of runners in here we signed in the winter and were able to see how they developed as high school

Waters’ aim is to utilize this season to allow his young squad to gain valuable training and competitive experience that should promise dividends in the coming years for the Tide. “The student-athletes that we have in here are in a very developmental stage, but they will be extraordinarily good when they’re juniors and seniors,” Waters said. “What will make them good is getting this experience at this point in their career. Instead of waiting years for their time to come, they’re getting that experience right now.” In a sport dominated by veteran teams and runners who already have gained that experience, Waters has tempered his expectations for the squad given its relative youth, but at the same time, he admits the potential to see growth this season. “There’s going to be surprises this season and some people who will really develop and shock us all down the road,” Waters said. The primary goal for this season will not necessarily be accomplished in the competitive arena but on the practice trails and locker room. “We hope to bring the team together and become a cohesive unit,” Waters said. “Our program will strive to create a standard whereby everyone will learn to trust each other, hold each other accountable, and build a culture that produces champions.”

Much like the men’s team, the 2012 edition of the Alabama women’s cross country team will feature an extreme youth movement with only three experienced runners on the roster joined by nine newcomers. Those veterans runners include senior Elsbeth Denton and juniors Palee Myrex and Claire Turner. Denton and Myrex competed in all six 2011 meets while injuries cut Turner’s season short after four races. “The interesting thing about the women’s team is we have three women with experience which is really valuable to the group of runners coming in,” Waters said. “We can see a handful of those freshmen really developing and having an impact in

With no shortage of young talent on his roster, Waters admits that his goal for

the women’s team is much the same as the men’s: recognizing the formative nature of this season in laying the groundwork for future success, as his roster matures and gains collegiate experience. The coaching staff also will be presented with the task of making sure that this squad, although brimming with talent, trains and races intelligently throughout the season. “Our challenge as coaches will be keeping them reigned in and making sure they’re developing with long-term intentions,” Waters said. “We want to teach them as athletes how to stay fresh so they can be at their strongest at the end of the season.” That lesson will be stretched across

all four months of the cross country season, with

Adam also brings a great level of organization and energy to our staff.”

ACADEMICSAlabama’s strong commitment to the academic success of its student-athletes is clear. The University offers a full-time Academic Advisement staff, mentoring and tutorial programs, and is a member of the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. In 2011-12, the Crimson Tide’s more than 525 student-athletes averaged over a 3.0 grade point average for the academic year, including 48 that maintained a career GPA of 4.0. Overall, for the second year in a row, five teams posted cumulative GPAs above 3.5. More than 140 student-athletes earned their degrees during the 2011-12 academic year. The latest numbers find that Alabama graduates 74 percent of its student-athletes while the general student population graduates at rate of 66 percent.

ALABAMA’S HONORS COLLEGEAlabama’s unique Honors College believes in attracting the best of the best to do some of the most important work going on in our University. What does that look like on a daily basis? Changing the course of Parkinson’s research, raising the bar on cultural literacy, starting an art program in local schools—in general, supporting communities in need. Students in Honors College don’t come here just to sign up with one of our outstanding faculty members’ program of study – they come to discover their own path. Students partner with faculty to create something that fits, inspires and ultimately educates like nothing else. The Honors College at the University of Alabama is about getting the information and access you need to create a meaningful, purpose-filled life.

A TRADITION OF ATHLETICS SUCCESSEntering the 2012-13 academic year, Alabama athletics teams have won 22 national team championships, 84 individual NCAA titles and 79 SEC team championships. Crimson Tide athletes are no stranger to world-class competition as 118 Alabama athletes have competed in the Olympic Games. Alabama has won 14 national titles and 22 SEC Championships in football, more than any other SEC school. The Alabama women’s gymnastics team has won 6 national team championships, including consecutive titles in 2011 and 2012. Alabama had an unprecedented 4 teams win NCAA championships during the 2011-12 academic year (football, gymnastics, women’s golf and softball).

TOP COMPETITIONAt Alabama, not only do we compete in the nation’s finest conference - the Southeastern Conference - but we also have the opportunity to run against some of the top schools in the nation each season. We host two home meets each season, in addition to several top meets leading up to the SEC and NCAA Championships. Those competitions provide an excellent base of experience leading to championship-level performances.

MAXIMUM EXPOSUREThe interest generated by Crimson Tide athletics teams provides immeasurable exposure for the University of Alabama as a whole while serving as a symbol of excellence for the state itself. During the 2011-12 athletics year, student-athletes participated in more than 1,200 interviews with news media and appeared on the cover of national magazines seven times.

ELITE COACHINGHead coach Dan Waters has assembled a staff at Alabama that has been a part or more than 40 NCAA track and field national championships and has produced more than 30 NCAA individual champions. In cross country alone, Coach Waters brings an impressive body of work to the Crimson Tide as he has consistently led his teams from also-rans into championship contenders. At TCU, Waters led the Horned Frogs to their first cross country conference title ever in 2000. At Georgia, he led the Bulldogs to their highest SEC finishes ever their first NCAA South Regional titles. At Texas A&M, Waters led the Aggies to the 2008 NCAA South Central Regional title, breaking the 19-year dominance of perennial power Arkansas.

HARRY PRITCHETT RUNNING PARKAlabama cross country trains on a championship-level course throughout the year. The Harry Pritchett Running Park has been the venue for the SEC Cross Country Championships as well as the NCAA South Regional Championships (most recently in 2011). The SEC Championships most recently were held at Harry Pritchett Running Park in 2000. The venue also hosted the SEC meet in 1972, 1979, 1988 and 2000. The running park can accommodate course lengths of 5,000, 6,000, 8,000 and 10,000 meters. The course is a flat to rolling all-grass surface with limited cart path crossings. The NCAA South Regional has been held at the Harry Pritchett Running Park four times (2001, 2004, 2009 and 2011).

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY LEADS NATION IN GPA, AGAIN

For the third straight year in 2011, the Alabama women’s cross country team was named a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for its outstanding performance in the classroom and on the course. In addition to earning the All-Academic team honor, the Crimson Tide were recognized as having the highest cumulative grade-point average among All-Academic honorees, with a 3.88 team GPA. The Tide earlier led the nation in the classroom in 2010 and 2009, when the program reported a cumulative GPA of 3.86 after having the second-highest GPA the year before (3.75), in 2008. To be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, a team must have a 3.00 cumulative GPA or better and have

championship.

At the University of Alabama, the goal for student-athlete is to be the best they can be, both athletically and academically, which is why head coach

country teams earn in the classroom as he is of what his student-athletes accomplish out on the course and on the track. Last season there was much for Waters to be proud of as the cross country team reached new heights in the classroom, both individually and as a team. The women’s team earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors for the eight time in the past decade, by posting the highest team grade point average in the country last season with a 3.88. The success enjoyed by the cross country program last year was just the beginning for the Alabama Athletics Department when it came to academic achievement. As a department, the Crimson Tide combined winning four national championships (football, gymnastics, women’s golf and softball) with equally impressive results in the academic realm.

Alabama’s more than 525 student-athletes averaged over a 3.0 grade point average for the 2011-12 academic year, including 48 that maintain a

cumulative GPAs above 3.5. More than 140 student-athletes earned their degrees during the 2011-12

The NCAA Elite 89 is awarded to the athlete with the highest cumulative grade point average at each NCAA Championship. Alabama ranks second nationally in Elite 89 honors with seven, including Corder in

Scholar-Athlete of the Year for their respective sports, including Barrett Jones (football), Jennifer Fenton (softball), Kim Jacob (gymnastics), Courtney McLane (women’s Tennis) and Brooke Pancake (women’s golf). All four of the teams that won national championships in 2011-12 had an athlete named the league’s top scholar for that sport. McLane won the award for the second time and Pancake earned the honor for an SEC record third time.

For decades, the University of Alabama men's and women's cross country teams have utilized several different practice areas - including its competition course, the Harry Pritchett Running Park. Built in 1959, and formerly known as the University Golf Course, it was named the Harry Pritchett Golf Course in 1980 and was known as such until November of 2003, when the course was converted exclusively for cross country use. In addition to playing host to the annual Crimson Classic event, the Harry Pritchett Running Park been the venue for the SEC Cross Country Championships as well as the NCAA South Regional Championships (most recently in 2011).

The Harry Pritchett Running Park last hosted the region championships in 2011. It also hosted in 2001, 2004 and 2009. The Alabama men won the regional title in 2001

crossings. The NCAA South Regional has been held at the Harry Pritchett Running Park four times (2001, 2004, 2009 and 2011).
