Aspresidentofthe4million-memberAllianceforRetiredAmericans,BarbaraJ.Easterlingleadsagrassrootsorganizationthateducatesandmobilizesretireesforprogressivecampaignsatthefederal,stateandlocallevels.PriortojoiningtheAlliance,Easterlingwasthefirstwomantoserveassecretary-treasureroftheCommunicationsWorkersofAmerica,itssecondhighestoffice.In1995,shebecamethefirstwomaninhistorytoserveassecretary-treasureroftheAFL-CIO,the13-million-memberfederationoflaborunions.GrowingupinaPolishfamilyofcoalminersandrubberworkers,shebeganhercareerinAkron,Ohioasan
operatoratOhioBell.
Followinga20-yearcareerasacorporatepublicrelationsexecutive,WendelllefthispositionasheadofcommunicationsforCIGNA,oneofthenationslargesthealthinsurers,toadvocateformeaningfulhealthcarereformandtohelpsociallyresponsibleorganizationsachievetheirgoals.InwidelycoveredCongressionalhearings,Wendelldisclosedhowinsurancecompanies,inordertoboostprofits,haveengagedinpracticesthatforcedmillionsofAmericansintotheranksoftheuninsuredandhowtheyhaveuseddeceptivePRtacticstodefeathealthcarereform.HeconsultswiththePublicAssetsInstituteonhealthcareissuesand
servesasaseioranalystattheTheCenterforPublicIntegrity.Hisbook,DeadlySpin:AnInsuranceInsiderSpeaksOutonHowCorporatePRisKillingHealthCareandDeceivingAmericans,isastarkwarningthatcorporatespinisdistortingour
democracy.
AnyaRaderWallack,ChairoftheGreenMountainCareBoard,hasworkedin
healthcarepolicyandreformforthepasttwodecades.InJanuary2011,she
joinedGovShumlinasSpecialAssistantforHealthReformandwasthechief
architectofAct48,thegovernorshealthreformplan.Duringthe1990s,Ms.WallackservedasGov.HowardDeansDeputyChiefofStaffandonHillary
ClintonsHealthReformTaskForce.SubsequentlyshebecametheExecutive
DirectoroftheVermontProgramforQualityinHealthCareandamemberoftheVermontBoardofMedicalPractice.SheholdsaPh.D.inSocialPolicyfrom
BrandeisUniversity.

Dr.DebRichterleftherfamilypracticeinBuffalo,NewYorktomovetoVermontwiththeexpresspurposeoforganizingforVermontHealthCareforAll.Shefeltthatin10yearsshecouldtalktoeveryvoterinVermontandpersuademostofthemthatsinglepayer(likeanimprovedMedicareforallVermonters)wasbothgoodforpeopleandbusiness.WiththehelpofotherlikemindedVermonters,shewasfinallysuccessfulwiththeelectionofGovernorShumlinwhoranhiscampaignonthisapproachtohealthreformandhelpedtopersuadetheVermontlegislaturetosupportthegovernorinlegislationtobringthistopass.ThelegislationsettingthestageforthisreformwaspassedandtheprocessisunderwaytomakeVermontthefirststatetocovereveryonewithhealthcare.She
