Being a successful outfitter means 60 to 80

hour work weeks most of the year. It begins with

strategic advertising, website, sport shows, -

recruitment and retention of clientele – and

finally culminates with the hunt or fishing

trip itself. Livestock, trucks, trailers and camp

equipment must be cared for year ‘round, and

then, there is the paperwork. Federal and State

agencies need, require, demand record keep-

ing such as employee records, BLM and Forest

permits, Outfitters Registration, vehicle and

liability insurance, and the list goes on.

Some outfitters prudently join COA and other

professional organizations, and a few become

active in those organizations. Even fewer give

selflessly of their time and energy, attending

countless meetings and taking on leadership

roles.

All of the above describes Jeanne Horne.

Jeanne is a single person who not only operates

a successful outfitting business but has been

actively involved in the Colorado Outfitters

Association for over a decade and has made

time to be our dedicated Secretary for the past

10 years. She is truly a valued asset of this

association.

Congratulations Jeanne! We honor you with

respect and appreciation for the person you

are.

COLORADODIVISIONOFWILDLIFE

To manage big game animals to assure sustainable hunting

opportunities and resource preservation, the Colorado Division of

Wildlife issues a limited number of licenses through a drawing process

for most species.

For big game, over-the-counter licenses are available for bull

elk only during the second and third seasons. Hunters who want

licenses for deer and other big game – including elk during the first

and fourth rifle seasons and in some specific game management

units and seasons - must apply annually.

Here’s how the application and draw system works:

Hunters apply for licenses and submit up to four choices for the

game management units desired. Applicants who don’t get their first

choice get a preference point for that unit. An applicant can also

purchase one point each year for $25. However, no more than one

preference point can be awarded per species per year. Points

are awarded for each individual species.

The number of preference points needed to draw a license depends

on the species, season and the particular game management unit.

For the most coveted units, hunters must accumulate numerous

preference points to have a chance to obtain a license in the draw.

An example: To obtain an either sex elk license during the first rifle

season in GMU 1, Colorado residents need 10 preference points and a

non-resident must accumulate 16 preference points. In that unit,

more than 1,100 people apply but only 26 licenses are issued.

If you want to accumulate points for a preferred unit, but you still

want to hunt for that season, apply to a coveted unit but pick units

with zero point requirements for your subsequent choices. Preference

points continue to accumulate until you receive a first-choice license.

For cow elk, the majority of game management units require no

preference points, so everyone who applies has a similar chance

of drawing a license. For buck deer, many units require 1-2 points;

limited elk units require even more points.

The DOW maintains a permanent preference point record for

everyone who applies. The record is automatically referenced when

a hunter applies for a unit that requires points.

Most big game licenses are reserved for Colorado residents. For

units and species that require five or more preference points, 80

percent of the licenses are allocated to residents, the remainder

to non-residents. If fewer than five preference points are needed,

65 percent of the licenses are allocated for state residents and the

remainder for non-residents.

A complete explanation for all species and a list of preference-point

requirements for the upcoming season is published each year in the

March/April edition of Colorado Outdoors, the DOW’s magazine.

The information is also published on the DOW’s web site,

www.wildlife.state.co.us.

The drawing for licenses is always held on the first Tuesday in April.

Results are posted on the web site. Leftover licenses go on sale the

second Tuesday in August and are available until they are sold out.

Mack McGraw of Gunnison began outfitting and guiding in 1948.

That career had a lifespan of 40 years and ended after the hunt in

1987. For the first twenty years, Mack hunted the Red Creek and the

Rock Springs country in some of the most rugged parts of what is now

designated the West Elk Wilderness. Then he moved operations to

his rustic cabin base camp on the rim of Powderhorn Creek where he

gained a reputation for top mule deer buck hunting.

Mack was active in helping to improve Colorado outfitting and

hunting conditions by working with other outfitters and legislators

to obtain early licensing for outfitters by the Division of Wildlife,

and seeking blaze orange laws and other legislation in the late

1960s and early 1970s. He was president of the Colorado Guides

& Outfitters Association for a term in 1970/71. Mac was always an

active participant in the Gunnison chapters of the Colorado Guides &

Outfitters Assoc. and the Colorado Outfitters Association.

Mack still resides in Gunnison where he is a treasure of facts,

tales, and knowledge of hunting, fishing, outfitting, and history of

rural life in western Colorado. He has

authored three books

including: “Mountain

Tales, Faded Tracks &

Colorado offers millions of acres of widely varied terrain for hunting.

Out-of-state hunters might find it very helpful to hire an outfitter to

guide them on their hunts. Outfitters know the lay of the land, the

habits of the animals and some of the best places to hunt.

Most hunters come to Colorado to hunt mule deer and elk. These two

species offer some of the most challenging hunting in the world.

But Colorado’s high country is also home to other magnificent big

game animals: bighorn sheep, pronghorns, mountain goats, bears,

moose and mountain lions. The numbers of these animals in the state

are significantly lower than deer and elk, so licenses are few and

difficult to obtain. But those who do obtain a license can look forward

to a high-quality hunting experience.

Here is a rundown of big game hunting in Colorado. For more

information on these species and how to get licenses, go to:

http://colorado.gov/wildlife. Go to the hunting section where you’ll

find lots of information about how to plan a hunt in Colorado.

Read the articles in the new “Elk Hunting University” section

that addresses all aspects of elk hunting, including how to find

an outfitter.

HuntingElk

The popular hunting magazines often display colorful photographs of

huge bull elk standing in open meadows presenting easy targets. The

reality in the mountains of Colorado, however, is far different.

Hunting elk is one of the most exciting big-game pursuits in North

America. But stalking these animals is challenging, and most hunters

won’t get easy shots.

“What the hunting magazines show is usually not the case,” says Patt

Dorsey, with a slight laugh. An avid big game hunter, Dorsey is also

an area wildlife manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife in Durango.

“You’re a lot more likely to find elk on a steep hillside in a mountain

canyon in thick timber than out in the open,” Dorsey said.

It’s estimated that there are about 280,000 elk in Colorado. The

hunting success rate for the species is about 24 percent. During the

2010 seasons, total harvest for all manner of take was 48,018 elk

with a statewide success rate of 22 percent. The total number of elk

hunters was 214,535.

If weather is warm, elk stay at high elevations and in the timber to

help them stay cool. Consequently, hunters need to work hard to get

shots. When snow falls, elk move to lower elevations and bunch up,

often on private land.

Hunters who expect to be successful will leave the ATV behind and

hunt slowly and quietly far from any road. Elk are very smart animals,

Dorsey explains. They quickly sense movement in the woods and at

any hint of danger move quickly and hide in rugged, difficult terrain.

COLORADO IS BIG GAME HUNTERS’ PARADISE

Page 29: 2012 Colorado Outfitters

29 ColoradoOutfitters|www.coloradooutfitters.org

Compounding the challenge for hunters is the fact that elk typically

gather in groups of 10 or more.

“That means they have a lot of eyes looking out for each other,” Dorsey

says. “They are very communicative and will talk back and forth with

barks. If one gets spooked, they’re all spooked and then they’re gone.”

Unlike deer, elk are not curious animals - they won’t stop to look at

what’s near them or what’s startled them.

“Once elk start running they usually won’t stop until they believe

they’re safe. They can easily run for a mile or more,” Dorsey says.

To hunt elk, the first thing Dorsey advises is to get off the ATV and

walk. It’s rare that a hunter will see an elk from a road during the

season - let alone get a shot. When elk start hearing the noise of

vehicles they move far away from roads.

Elk are most active during the night and are likely to be grazing in

transition areas - meadows next to heavy timber, where different types

of vegetation meet, just above or below ridgelines. The transition

areas provide not only good food sources, but also good escape routes.

Hunters should watch those areas at first light and at dusk.

During the day, hunters need to move into the dark timber and not

be hesitant to hunt in difficult areas. Hunters should move as quietly

as possible for short distances, and then scan the woods for several

minutes before moving again. Even in dense forest it’s a good idea

to use binoculars so you can discern subtle movement or colors in

the trees.

“With binoculars it’s a lot easier to see the tip of an antler, or an

unusual horizontal feature in all that vertical vegetation,” Dorsey says.

If you find the areas where animals graze at night, it’s likely that

you’ll find them in adjacent areas during the day. Elk like to remain

in one area for most of the day. So a stealthy stalk is the key. Hunters

also must be willing to venture into difficult terrain and thick forested

areas.

When hunting in areas with roads, move far above or far below the

roads to find elk. In areas where there are two roads, locate the most

difficult terrain in between.

Elk will move to lower elevations as the weather cools - but it must

be a substantial change. Snow that allows tracking always provides

hunters an advantage. Elk usually won’t make a big move to lower

elevations until the snow depths are a foot or more.

Elk can be found in the mountains throughout Colorado, but the most

renowned area is in the northwest region of the state. The largest

herd in the area, 40,000 animals, summers on the pristine high

plateau known as the Flat Tops and migrates 50 miles into the lower

altitude areas of Routt, Moffat and Rio Blanco counties. The areas

hold abundant habitat where elk can thrive during the winter when

temperatures are relatively mild compared with other areas in western

Colorado.

“There is a lot of transition mountain brush which they like and plenty

of room for them to spread out in the winter range,” says Darby Finley,

a terrestrial biologist for Parks and Wildlife in northwest Colorado.

“They follow the food and there is a lot of it throughout the year.”

Wherever you choose to hunt, be sure to line up your shot carefully

before you pull the trigger. Because of their size and endurance it can

be difficult to knock an elk down. It’s important to hit them in the

critical area of the lungs and the heart. Aim just behind and below the

front quarters.

Colorado is the only state where an elk license can be purchased over-

the-counter. That fact draws a lot of hunters to Colorado; but there are

enough elk to provide good hunting opportunities for anyone who buys

a license.

For first time elk hunters, go to the video section of the Parks and

Wildlife website to view an instructional video on how to field dress

and elk.

HuntingDeer

Every year thousands of hunters head to the plains, the foothills and

the high country in Colorado to hunt deer. Most hunters stalk mule

deer in the mountains and the foothills, but the allure of stalking the

wily white tail deer in eastern Colorado is growing in popularity.

Whichever type of deer you choose, you are sure to face a challenging

hunt. The deer population in Colorado is steady, with an estimated

population of about 430,000. In 2010, some 78,000 licenses were sold

and about 34,000 deer were taken by hunters for a success rate of 43

percent.

In the late 1990s, the deer population declined substantially. Colorado

Parks and Wildlife moved to bolster the population by eliminating over-

the-counter sales of deer licenses. Now, licenses can only be obtained

through the limited draw that takes place on the first Tuesday of April

every year.

Limiting licenses has greatly improved the health of Colorado’s deer

herds and helped to allow more bucks to grow to trophy size.

The drawing also has made licenses more difficult to obtain in some

areas of the state. But hunters who obtain a license are assured of a

high-quality hunting experience. After the drawing, leftover licenses

are often available in a few areas of the state. Leftover licenses go

on sale during the first week of August. Go to any agency office or the

web site to check the status of leftover licenses.

Whitetails

In Colorado, whitetails can be found on the eastern plains. A big

white-tail buck can reach 250 pounds. These animals spend most of

their time in the river and creek bottoms, taking protection in stands

of cottonwood trees and the thick brush of riparian areas. Like elk,

they are primarily grazers, so they go to the river and creek bottoms in

search of succulent grasses. At dusk they’ll move out of those areas

and into farmers’ fields.

“Whitetails are harder to hunt than mule deer,” says Marty Stratman,

a terrestrial biologist for Parks and Wildlife in northeast Colorado.

“Mule deer show curiosity and will stop and look around. But with

whitetails, if they see you, they’re gone.”

Hunting whitetails requires slow, patient stalks along the edges of

riparian areas, Stratman explains. The deer can hide easily along

the river and creek bottoms. Getting a shot at a deer hiding in thick

vegetation can be difficult.

Private property provides most of the good white-tail hunting areas in

eastern Colorado, so white-tail hunters should expect to put in some

time in obtaining the necessary permission from land owners.

MuleDeer

Muleys are found throughout the varied terrain of Colorado. They live

on the eastern plains, in foothills of the Eastern Slope, in dark timber

and Aspen forests, in alpine areas above timberline, and in the red

rock canyons on the western edge of the state. You can pick the type

of experience you’d like when hunting for mule deer -- from a grueling

climb into the high country, to an exciting scramble in the canyons.

A large mule deer buck can reach 400 pounds. Most range in size from

200 to 300 pounds. In the mountains and foothills, mule deer don’t

spend much time in dark, heavy timber, explains Dorsey. They are

primarily browsers and prefer aspen forests where there are plenty of

low shrubs and small trees, oak brush and areas along the edges of

different forest types.

Mule deer are most active at night and can often be found in meadow

areas during low-light hours. During the day, muleys will bed down in

protective cover.

In warm weather look for deer along ridgelines, Dorsey explained. They

often use those areas because wind is consistent along ridges and

helps to keep them cool.

During the low-light hours of evening and morning, look for meadows

at the edge of thick cover. If you see where they are feeding during

times of low-light, it’s likely they’ll move into nearby timbered areas

to rest for part of the day. Deer also tend to move during the middle of

the day toward the areas where they feed in the evening.

Dorsey recommends making a slow stalk.

“I tell people to walk for 10 yards and then look for 10 minutes,”

Dorsey says.

Mule deer have an excellent sense of smell, so if the wind is blowing

in the direction you are moving, chances are the animals will pick

up your scent and move. Dorsey also says that deer go to creeks at

night to drink, so there is no advantage to hunting near water sources

during the day.

One advantage mule deer give hunters is their curiosity. When mule

deer are spooked, they’ll often run a short distance then turn to

determine if they are being pursued. That can be a good time for a

shot, Dorsey says.

A small amount of snow will get deer moving out of high altitude

areas. Usually by late October, migrating herds will move to winter

range areas, even if there is no snow.

Hunters who get a shot at a deer should realize that the vital organ

area for deer presents a small target – about the size of a dinner plate

just behind the front quarter.

“Make sure you can make a good shot at that area. And hunters

should never try to make a head shot. A lot of deer are wounded with

poorly placed shots,” Dorsey says.

Pronghorn

Serious pronghorn hunters are willing to wait years for the opportunity

to hunt trophy bucks in the best pronghorn units in Colorado. All

Colorado pronghorn hunting tags are issued by draw.

The average buck tag requires two to three preference points, but tags

for premium units can require five or more points. Doe tags are easier

to draw, but most hunters still need at least one point.

The majority of pronghorns are in northwest

Colorado and on the eastern plains. Small

populations of Pronghorn also are found in

North Park, Middle Park, South Park and the

San Luis Valley.

Demand for tags in the northwest region is

usually highest, so more points are required.

There are two reasons more hunters apply in

the northwest: there are big herds with big

bucks; hunters have the opportunity to hunt

on both public and private land.

In eastern Colorado there are also large herds

and trophy bucks. Most of the land, however,

is private with the exception of some isolated

pockets of public land including the Pawnee

National Grasslands in the northeast and

the Comanche National Grasslands in the

southeast.

The good news is that many ranchers and

farmers in eastern Colorado are willing to

grant permission to those who want to

hunt pronghorn.

The best advice for a hunter to gain access

to private land is to ask permission well

in advance of the season. Never wait until

opening day. If properly asked in advance,

many landowners are willing to allow

pronghorn hunting. Some will even offer

directions to the best pronghorn locations,

and information about watering holes and

road access.

In 2010, Colorado Parks and Wildlife issued

about 19,000 licenses, 12,300 animals were

harvest for a hunter success rate

of 65 percent.

Since the time of Lewis and Clark, early

settlers called pronghorns “antelope.”

Pronghorns, however, are a unique species

found only in North America. Their historic

range is west of the Mississippi River from

southern Canada to central Mexico.

Recovery of pronghorns is one of the great

conservation stories in the history of the

American West. Biologists estimate there

were 30-40 million pronghorns in North

America prior to European settlement. By

the 1920’s, there were fewer than 40,000.

Page 34: 2012 Colorado Outfitters

34 ColoradoOutfitters|www.coloradooutfitters.org

Hunting for pronghorns was suspended across the West for several

decades. After the population began to increase, hunting in Colorado

was allowed starting in 1945. Since then the population has grown

steadily. In the early 60’s there were only about 15,000 pronghorn in

Colorado; today the population is estimated at about 80,000.

Moose

Colorado’s moose reintroduction is one of the most successful species

conservation programs in state history. Moose were introduced to

Colorado in the mid 1970s, and thanks to sportsmen’s’ dollars and

support, Colorado is now home to a growing population of more than

1,600 moose. These largest members of the deer family can be found

in many parts of the state and have become highly sought-after by

wildlife watchers and hunters.

Because moose are relatively rare, hunting licenses for moose are very

restricted. In 2010, Colorado issued about 215,000 elk licenses, but

only 163 moose licenses. Because so few licenses are issued, overall

hunter success is high, usually 80 percent or more. The lifetime bag

limit for bull moose in Colorado is one.

During the 2010 season, a total of 136 moose were harvested: 75 bulls

and 61 cows.

Moose are solitary and reproduce slowly. Moose are common in North

Park, Middle Park, in the areas around Steamboat Springs, Rio Grande

National Forest, and Grand Mesa National Forest. The animals have

also recently been introduced into the White River National Forest east

of Meeker. However, hunters in all mountainous terrain should expect

that they could encounter moose while hunting deer and elk.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is concerned about an unacceptably high

number of moose that have been mistakenly shot by elk hunters.

During the last two hunting seasons, the agency has investigated

more than 20 cases of hunters carelessly or negligently shooting

moose. Despite years of education efforts surrounding moose

reintroduction, including direct outreach to hunters with licenses in

northwest Colorado, some hunters said they were surprised to see

these big animals in areas where elk and deer are common.

“We are seeing way too many preventable mistakes,” said Ron Velarde,

northwest regional manager for the agency. “If you aren’t 100 percent

sure that what you have in your sights is what you have on your

license, do not pull the trigger.”

Mitchell Arnold

Page 35: 2012 Colorado Outfitters

35 ColoradoOutfitters|www.coloradooutfitters.org

While cow elk and cow moose may be

confused in low light or when obscured by

brush, bull elk and bull moose look nothing

alike. Proper target identification is one of

the first rules taught in hunter education

courses. Properly identifying the target not

only ensures you are taking the proper species

and gender but also prevents hunters from

shooting at sound or movement - something

that should never happen.

Hunters who mistakenly kill the wrong animal,

or know of someone who did, are urged

to immediately contact a wildlife officer.

Wildlife officers will seize the erroneously

killed animal and donate the meat. Hunters

who mistakenly kill a moose and don’t turn

themselves in are subject to heavy fines and

penalties if wildlife officers have to track

them down.

BighornSheep

The Rocky Mountain bighorn is perhaps the

most recognized and sought after animal in

Colorado. The curled horns of the rams are

one of the most distinctive ornaments of any

wildlife species.

But while the hardy animals live in harsh

terrain, bighorns are a fragile species and

Colorado wildlife managers are keeping a

close watch on them. The population of big

horns is estimated at only about 6,900, and

the population has dropped slightly in the

past few years. Bighorns are susceptible

to diseases transmitted when they mingle

with domestic sheep. Wildlife managers

work to keep the two species separate, but

that’s a difficult task in the vast areas of

Colorado. Researchers also are experimenting

with vaccines that could give some sheep

immunity to the strains of bacteria that cause

sheep to contract pneumonia-like diseases.

And throughout

the state, researchers have placed radio

collars on animals to track their movements

and survival rates.

In 2010, Colorado Parks and Wildlife issued

278 licenses and a total of 144 animals were

harvested - 118 rams and 26 ewes. Getting a

license is difficult, with most hunters waiting

a minimum of five years to draw a tag.

Depending on the unit, many hunters have

waited more than 10 years for a license.

The preferred habitat of bighorns is steep,

rocky slopes with little vegetation.

“They are very challenging to hunt,” says

Scott Wait, a senior terrestrial biologist for the

agency.

While not meaning to be discouraging, Wait

doesn’t mince words about the realities of

hunting for sheep.

“They are very wary,” Wait says “The stalk

is usually long, strenuous and in difficult

terrain,”

Retrieving an animal from steep rocky

mountainsides, of course, adds to the hunting

challenge.

The good news for hunters is that bighorns

are most active during the day and follow

predictable daily patterns.

Colorado is also home to desert bighorn

sheep. This species is low in number and only

about 450 animals are estimated to roam

the desert areas in western Colorado. Big

game managers, however, are encouraged

that the population is growing slowly. Only 10

ram licenses were issued in 2009 and all the

hunters were successful.

MountainGoats

The adaptable, hardy mountain goats seem to

defy gravity. These snow-white critters inhabit

terrain that is even more severe than the

haunts of bighorn sheep.

Relax this summer and enjoy fishing, horse camping, trailrides, and hunting — both archery and rifle.

We offer summer Fish Camp at Upper Marvine Lake, Archery Drop Camps Flattop Wilderness, Hunting (Drop and Guided).

Goats balance on narrow bands of rock on

sheer cliffs, and eat lichen and small plants.

They seem to think nothing of jumping from

one precipice to another. Goats also remain at

high-elevation year around, enduring brutal

winter conditions above timberline at more

than 11,000 feet.

Mountain goats were transplanted in Colorado

from other states in the 1940s. There is still

debate if they were ever native to the state.

Goats are very adaptable and can move long

distances to get to new terrain. Unfortunately,

they also are aggressive and can muscle

native bighorn sheep from their terrain.

Consequently, wildlife managers work to

keep the goats in areas where they’ve long

been established and where they don’t

interact with bighorns. These areas include

the Raggeds Wilderness near Gunnison, in

the mountains around Georgetown, in the

Collegiate Peaks west of Buena Vista, in the

Gore Range in the central mountains, in the

San Juan Mountains near Silverton, and in the

Poudre River drainage in northern Colorado.

The agency estimates the mountain goat

population at about 1,700. In 2010, 220

licenses were issued and 159 goats--94

males and 65 females-- were harvested for a

harvest rate of 50 percent.

Those who want to hunt goats should expect

to wait five years or more to accumulate

enough preference points for a license.

BlackBears

After being adversely affected by drought in

the early 2000s, the black bear population

appears to have made a strong comeback

in Colorado. Bears are very dependent on

specific types of plants for survival. Adequate

rain and snow in most parts of the state

during the last few years has helped spur

growth of good crops of acorns in scrub oak,

serviceberry, choke cherries and a variety of

grasses and forbs.

Bears are mostly solitary and reproduce

slowly. Sows do not start producing cubs until

they are about five years old and then can

only give birth every other year. Cubs often

stay with their mothers for up to two years.

Bears range generally in size from about 175

pounds for a sow and up to about 300 pounds

for a boar. Few bears exceed 400 pounds in

Colorado.

Colorado’s most abundant bear populations

can be found primarily between 8,000 feet

to 9,500 feet in elevation in thick oak brush

and aspen groves. But bears also inhabit

ponderosa pine forests and riparian areas

where there is sufficient forage. Population

and reproduction vary depending on the

availability of their favorite foods – acorns

from oak brush, berries, grasses and forbs.

When the weather is wet, that’s good news

for bears. Fewer bears are born during

drought years.

The difficulty in obtaining a bear license

depends on the season and the specific

game management unit. Most bears are

killed in September when they are most

active searching for food before they go into

hibernation. Consequently, licenses during

the September season are difficult to get.

After September, licenses for most units can

be purchased over-the-counter. Some deer

and elk hunters buy a bear tag because the

seasons are concurrent.

In 2010, just over 9,500 licenses were issued

and 800 bears were killed by hunters. One

reason for the low harvest success rate - just

8 percent - is that bears are difficult to hunt

because they live primarily in thick brush.

Also, after September their eating slows down

and they are more difficult to find. By early

November, most bears are curled up for their

six-month nap.

Most bears are harvested when the weather

is warm, so a successful hunter must attend

to the carcass quickly. Remove the hide as

fast as possible after the kill and trim away

the fat. Then get the meat on ice as soon as

Larry Ehardt

Page 38: 2012 Colorado Outfitters

38 ColoradoOutfitters|www.coloradooutfitters.org

possible. In warm weather, meat will spoil quickly.

Anyone who harvests a bear also must bring the carcass to a Parks

and Wildlife office within five days of the kill so the sex and size can

be determined and entered into a data base. Researchers are removing

a small tooth – the first premolar – from which can be determined

how many times a sow has given birth to cubs, and the age of the

animal. The inspection aids in research and in managing the bear

population.

MountainLions

The most elusive big game animal in Colorado is the mountain lion.

Also known as pumas or cougars – they live in areas where there is

dense vegetation and often very broken terrain such as canyons and

rocky hillsides. Deer are the primary prey for Colorado’s biggest

native cat.

For the 2010-11 season, 1,739 licenses were issued and 374 lions

were taken by hunters.

Licenses for lions can be purchased over-the-counter and the season

lasts from November through March. Hunters who obtain licenses must

call in every day to check if quotas have been filled in specific game

management units.

Most lion hunting occurs when there is snow on the ground. Dogs pick

up the scent from tracks and chase the lions into trees. The chase is

often long and challenging through difficult terrain.
