osHA’s final Rule on Electrical Protective Equipment (osHA® 1910.269) prohibits clothing that when exposed to flames or arcs, could increase the extent of wearer injury. Employers must determine appropriate clothing based on an evaluation of potential hazards in the work environ-ment. Clothing made from flame-resistant materials is acceptable under the Rule; ie., clothing that meets the requirements of AstM f1506. Untreated cotton or wool fabrics weighing at least 11.0 oz. are also acceptable under limited conditions identified by osHA.

the national Electrical safety Code (nEsC®) is published by the iEEE. it sets the ground rules for practical safeguarding of persons during the installation, operation, or maintenance of electric supply and communication lines and associated equipment.

the nEsC® requires that the employer determine potential exposure to an electric arc for employees who work on or near energized parts or equipment. if the exposure is greater than 2 cal/cm2, employees are required to wear clothing with an arc rating not less than the anticipated level of arc energy as determined by tables in the standard or by choosing clothing with a minimum effective arc rating of 4 cal/cm2. Certain meltable fabrics are not allowed.

whaT sTandaRds aRE UsEd FoR ELECTRIC powER gEnERaTIon, TRansmIssIon and dIsTRIbUTIon?

various specifications and performance requirements have been established based on AstM d6413 testing. d6413 is the standard Us vertical flammability test method. Both the Canadian General standards Board (CGsB) and the national fire Protection Association (nfPA®) require no more than 2.0 seconds Afterflame and 4.0 inches (100mm) Char Length for protection against hydrocarbon flash fires. in the absence of other specifications, Bulwark® follows AstM f2302 requirements of no more than 2.0 seconds Afterflame and 6.0 inches Char Length as a minimum requirement. other performance requirements

may apply to specific garments and will be so indicated on the garment label.

there is a lot of misinformation in the market. Many items are labeled “fR” that actually only meet general wearing apparel standards or standards that are only applicable to upholstery or curtains. specifiers and end users must determine the appropriate PPE based on their hazard analysis and the standards and specifications applicable in their industry. PPE chosen must meet the requirements of the appropriate standards and specifications.

Bulwark flame-resistant apparel is constructed from flame-resistant fabrics and components. “flame-resistant” as used herein, means that garments meet the requirements specified in AstM f2302 for labeling protective clothing as heat and flame-resistant. Unless otherwise specified, Bulwark garments meet the performance requirements of nfPA 70E and AstM f1 506, and are acceptable for use in occupation covered by osHA final Rule 1910.269.

Bulwark garments are not intended for fire entry, structural or wildlands fire fighting activities and provide no personal protection from chemical exposures. they should be removed at once if fouled with flammable material. to prevent generation of potentially hazardous static electricity, do not don or remove any garments in a hazardous area.

aRC RaTIngSArc ratings are supplied to Bulwark based on testing by our fabric suppliers or from our own testing. Arc ratings are a statistical calculation of the 50% probability that a second degree burn will result from an electric arc exposure. As with all tests, some level of variation in AtPv test results is normal and expected among fabrics of identical fiber content and nominal weight. in order to assist end users with their hazard analysis by providing the most conservative AtPv, Bulwark will publish the lowest arc rating for that fabric weight in our catalog and on our garment label.

1. Height: Stand straight against a wall without your shoes. Make a mark level with the top of your head. Measure from this point down to the floor.

2. Neck: Measure around the base of the neck where a collared shirt would fit or measure a collarband on a shirt that fits you well. Lay the collarband flat. Measure from the beginning of the button hole to the center of the button.

3. Chest: Measure well up under your arms, across your shoulder blades and over the fullest part of your chest. Hold the tape firmly, but not tightly. Be sure the tape is level and straight across your back. Stand naturally.

4. Sleeve: Bend the elbow slightly. Start at the center back of the neck and measure across the shoulder to the elbow and down to the wrist bone.

5. Waist: First, remove your belt. Then, measure over shirt (not over pants) at the position you normally wear your pants. Hold the tape firmly but not tightly.

6. Hips: Stand with your heels together. Measure around the fullest part of the hips, holding tape measure level.

7. Inseam: Use similar style pants that fit you well. Lay them flat with the front and back creases smooth. Measure along the inside seam of one leg from the bottom of hem to the crotch.
