An adventurer with a bold new idea meets a filmmaker looking for a unique story to tell . A mountain photographer bumps into a National Geographic editor at the opening of a Festival exhibition . A North Face rep discovers a talented new climber at a Festival seminar . Yes, serendipity can be planned, and it takes many forms here in Banff . We simply provide the inspiration and the venue .The Banff Wilderness Photography Workshop, Adventure Filmmakers’ Workshop, and Mountain and Wilderness Writing Program connect literary and digital storytellers . The resulting new films, books, and images often return to us in the form of award-winning works .

Planned serendipity had a hand in this year’s programming . From the moment Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner agreed to share her adventures while summiting K2, other elements started falling into place . Tommy Heinrich confirmed he would exhibit the photographs shot with Gerlinde on K2 during that climb . Some weeks later, we heard from filmmakers who were in the throes of finishing their feature film, K2 Siren of the Himalayas . And who’s featured in that film that will see its World premiere in Banff this year? None other than Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner .

We courted David Suzuki for over two years . He aims to complete so many critical projects before he hands over the reins that we had all but given up . But thanks to serendipity, we were able to secure Dasho Kinley Dorji of Bhutan – and this time David accepted our invitation .

That’s serendipity . And it’s exactly what happens here . The Banff Centre unites writers, filmmakers, photographers, musicians, artists, thinkers, leaders, and performers from all over the world into a global, creative community . I invite you to step out of the familiar . Introduce yourself to the person sitting next to you – who you meet may surprise you .

On behalf of a remarkable dream team who never cease to amaze me with all they manage, I thank you, the storytellers . Thank you supporters, partners, and volunteers . And thanks also to you, our audience . Never underestimate the gift of serendipity and don’t question it . Over 150 years later, Navarana travels to her ancestor’s homeland while coming to terms with unprecendented changes facing all Arctic peoples .

Daily life in the South Tyrolean Alps brings special challenges for this family farming the regions between heaven and earth . Youngsters pilot their own private cable car up and down the mountain to school while their parents produce cheese and tend to endless chores . During harvest, the entire family chips in by scything hay then sliding mounds of it down steep slopes to the barns to use as winter feed . Despite temptations of a simpler life in the village below, this family remains to reap the rewards that contempory life pushes aside .

Have we gone wrong in the west? Bring your notebook and learn from the wise . A group of young Ladakhi teens leave their families behind to visit France during a school-exchange trip and ask some very astute questions . When it comes time to leave France and their new French families – despite the tears – their revealing comments beg the question, who is better off?

Conrad anker: On the Shark’s FinLocated deep in India’s Garhwal Himalaya, Mt . Meru is a definitive and elusive test of high altitude, big-wall mountaineering – more than two dozen attempts failed to reach the top over the past three decades . American alpinist Conrad Anker will share how he and climbing partners Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk became the first to succeed via the Shark’s Fin route (6,309 metres) in October of 2011 .

Anker’s presentation will be followed by films in competition .

Often referred to as the world’s greatest mountaineer, Messner asserts that his biggest challenge has always been the quest for himself – and this captivating documentary finds him landing back on Earth as a mere mortal .

2012 Banff Mountain Photography Competition JEANNE ANd PETER LOuGHEEd BuILdING

The competition’s emphasis on storytelling through still images was rewarded this year with a number of stunning photographs that explore the play of light in dark places . In his series Night Climbing, the winning photographer Neal Grundy of Brighton, UK, documents the difficulty of tackling relatively simple climbs with only the light of a headlamp to guide the climber . Italian photographer Sandro Sedran won a Jury Special Mention for his series Lights in the Dark .

We extend our thanks to 2012 jury members, photographers Dianne Bos, Donald Lee, and Craig Richards for their excellent evaluation of the competition entries .

Mark Unrau’s photographs capture the stark beauty of daily life amongst a nomadic family living in a remote valley in Amdo, Tibet . These images were taken over the course of a month that Mark spent as part of a film/recording crew for the documentary, Shining Spirit: The Musical Journey of Jamyang Yeshi, which was a finalist in the 2009 Banff Mountain Film Competition .

The 19th annual Banff Mountain Book Competition received 125 entries from 10 countries . With little more than two months to read, over 40 volunteer readers took on the difficult task of whittling down the list to 18 finalists . Once the finalist shortlist in each category is established, it falls to our international jury to debate the merits of each book and decide award winners . We are indebted to our jury members, Barbara Brownell-Grogan (USA), Bruce Kirkby (Canada), and Jim Perrin (UK) for endless hours spent reading – and for their expertise in the world of mountain literature .

Barbara Brownell-Grogan (USA)Barbara Brownell-Grogan’s 35-year publishing career began at Time-Life Books as picture researcher and editor and continued at National Geographic, first at the Kids’ magazine as editor; then as director of product development, executive editor, and editor-in-chief for National Geographic Books . She has published New York Times bestselling authors Stephen Ambrose, Rick Atkinson, and Dan Buettner . She is currently president of Rivanna Publishing Ventures, which establishes partnerships for conservation, humanitarian, and education-focused publications, balancing paper and growing digital products .

Bruce Kirkby (Canada)Bruce is a writer, photographer, traveler and adventurer . As a columnist for the Globe and Mail, a regular contributor to Explore Magazine and Canadian Geographic, and author of two bestselling books (Sand Dance and Dolphin’s Tooth), Bruce’s journeys have taken him across Arabia by camel, down the Blue Nile on raft, and across Iceland by foot .

Jim Perrin (UK)Having completed many first ascents and difficult solo climbs, Jim Perrin was one of the U .K .’s leading rock climbers in his youth . He is also a prolific author having penned fourteen books . He has won the Boardman Tasker prize twice as well as awards at the Banff Mountain Book Festival in 2005 and 2006 . He has just completed a new book due to be published next spring on the friendship between mountaineers Eric Shipton and Bill Tilman . Perrin is a Fellow of the Welsh Academy and an Honorary Fellow of Bangor University .

David E . BrennerDavid E . Brenner, CEO of Principal Media, oversees all aspects of the Beverly Hills-based TV production/distribution company . Under his stewardship, Principal Media has created over 300 hours of TV programming for Sky Channel, National Geographic, Travel Channel, Fox Reality, ABC Family and others . Additionally, Principal Media’s international distribution wing represents 3,000+ hours of award-winning TV programming . Prior to joining Principal Media in 2006, Brenner was a business legal affairs executive at Lionsgate Entertainment, as well as Director of Worldwide Distribution at Alliance Atlantis Pictures International .

Tommy HeinrichTommy Heinrich left Argentina for the USA in 1988, where he began combining his passions for climbing, photography, and filmmaking . In 1995, he became the first person from Argentina to reach the summit of Mount Everest . A member of over 15 Himalayan expeditions, his photographs have been published worldwide . Heinrich has filmed expeditions to Everest, Dhaulagiri, Aconcagua and other high altitude peaks for CBS, Dish Network, Discovery, CNN, and Canal 13 (Argentina) among other networks . Tommy currently lives in Buenos Aires with his family .

Dale TemplarDale Templar spent 22 years working for BBC Television as a producer/director and series producer . She has specialized in filming abroad in extreme and often dangerous locations . Templar series-produced Human Planet, an eight-part series shot in HD, that won huge critical acclaim . In 2011, Templar was presented with the Cherry Kearton Medal and Award from the Royal Geographical Society for Natural History Photography and Cinematography . She now runs her own TV production company One Tribe TV; with her newest venture being Real In Media, an online company designed to assist professionals seeking work in the broadcast industry .

Cindy WittenCindy Witten has worked as a journalist, director/producer, television executive, and senior director . Her most recent position was Director General of the National Film Board of Canada’s English Program where she oversaw the NFB’s ground-breaking work in documentary, animation and experimental film, as well as pioneering interactive productions . Witten established the NFB’s first Digital Studio in Vancouver in 2008 and it has produced acclaimed interactive work . Before the NFB, Cindy was a senior executive at Alliance Atlantis Broadcasting, most recently as VP Content of History Television .

Film Jury

Charlie Robinson is back to adjudicate films with the goal of awarding the 2012 Audio Post Production Scholarship . The recipient, chosen from the Film finalists in this year’s film competition, will receive approximately $10,000 in Banff Centre studio services and on-site expertise to produce a surround DVD soundtrack for their chosen project . The winner will be announced at the Best of the Festival awards night on Sunday, November 4 .

According to Robinson, a leader in the field of surround sound for Dolby Research, sound for film should strive for ‘better than being there’ – sometimes quieter and cleaner, sometimes more intense and complex – while maintaining some production sounds to give a first-person feel .

geoff Powter has been at the heart of the mountaineering community in the Canadian Rockies for more than 30 years . Both as an ardent observer and an active participant, Powter’s life has enriched our understanding of why we go into the mountains and what the mountains can bring to us . The 2012 Summit of Excellence Award will be awarded to him at this year’s Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival . Powter is a journalist and clinical psychologist whose writings have delved deeply into the many aspects of climbing . He has written award-winning profiles of some of Canada’s most intriguing mountain personalities, and spent 13 years at the helm of the 105-year-old Canadian Alpine Journal . Assuming the editorship of the CAJ in 1993, Powter achieved his goal of providing space to what he has called the “inner ranges” – the more philosophical and thoughtful aspects of alpine adventure, including fiction and poetry . He has won 10 National Magazine Awards for his journalism in a wide range of publications .

Powter’s book, Strange and Dangerous Dreams: The Fine Line Between Adventure and Madness, was published in 2006 and gained a special jury

mention at the Banff Mountain Book and Film Festival that year . Exploring 11 tales of troubled expeditions, the book is his investigation into the psychology of risk .

While he started climbing as a teenager near his home in Montreal, it wasn’t until he came west to pursue post-graduate work that he saw what he calls his first “real mountain” . Becoming a highly accomplished climber himself, Powter has since put up more than 50 new routes right here in the Rockies, and has also participated in 13 expeditions to the Himalaya . To give back to the region of the world that he felt had given him so much, he served seven years as President of the Canadian Himalaya Foundation .

A resident of Canmore, Powter has been a volunteer and participant in the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival since 1988, and in 2000 began the popular Voices of Adventure interview series at the Festival . An engaging facilitator and interviewer, he’s held court with mountain legends such as a few of his personal favourites: Dr . Charlie Houston, Brad and Barbara Washburn, and Royal Robbins .

Bernadette McDonald, former vice-president of Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre, was at the helm of the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival when Powter brought his idea of interviewing mountaineering legends and personalities to the table .

“Geoff has contributed to the mountain community in so many ways: as a talented and bold climber, as a fine writer, as editor of the Canadian Alpine Journal,” she said . “My personal debt to Geoff has more to do with his generous collaboration with the Festival during the years that I was director . He was always full of good ideas, provided a fantastic sounding board for me, and always conducted the Voice of Adventure interviews with sound research, impeccable preparation, and inspired delivery . He remains one of the important and consistent voices of the Festival .”

We partner with Banff Airporter, an environmentally-conscious airport shuttle and transportation service, and we encourage Festival guests to leave their cars at home . The Banff Centre is an “idle free” zone . We use compostable plates, cups, cutlery, and food bags, and we encourage guests to bring their

own water bottle and/or travel mug! Bow Valley Power provides Green Energy to Power the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival and deliver the films on the World Tour to Canada and the USA . Thank you to Bow Valley Waste Management Commission for their help in moving us “Toward Zero Waste” .
