Ancient Babylon was the capital city

of the powerful nation Babylonia,

located in Mesopotamia. In today’s

geography, the site of the historical city

of Babylon sits in contemporary Iraq,

about 70 miles south of Baghdad.

Daniel spent his entire adult life as a captive in Babylon. Scholars believe

the young man was forcibly taken to Babylon around 605 BC, and Daniel 1:21 reveals that he remained there until at least 539 BC. That means Daniel lived in Babylon well into old age—more than 60 years!

Think how you’d have felt if you were with Daniel and his friends when King Nebuchadnezzar II invaded Jerusalem and forced you to move to Babylon. You’d constantly be afraid for your life…You’d have to learn a new language…eat new food…learn complicated new subjects…worship new gods…

It would’ve been so easy for Daniel and his friends to try to fi t in—to do whatever was necessary to please this new king. But no matter the consequences, they courageously remained faithful to the one true God—with astounding results.

In Babylon, kids (and adults) get to meet Daniel, become friends with him, and learn about his breathtaking experiences. As participants watch Daniel’s courage and faith in action, they’ll explore how they too can faithfully follow God today—no matter what.

When King Nebuchadnezzar forced Daniel and his friends to relocate

to Babylon, he was basically taking post-war hostages from Israel’s royal families. By doing this, Nebuchadnezzar gained promising recruits for his own service—and also reminded people back in Jerusalem that they shouldn’t dare to revolt against his recently-imposed Babylonian rule.

Opening CelebrationEveryone starts the day with a fun time of energetic singing and worship.

Opening Tribe TimeAfter Celebration, kids head off to small groups—their

Tribes. They gather on home-base blankets and get ready to step back in time, preparing to share God’s love throughout Babylon.

Visiting Babylon!(Daniel’s Adventures; Palace Playground; Marketplace Shops)Tribes will meet Daniel and hear about his adventures with the king’s crazy demands. They’ll have a

Closing CelebrationFinally, everyone comes together for joyful celebration and meaningful worship to end the fun-fi lled day.

Musicians and their instruments appear frequently in Babylonian archeological artifacts. Cuneiform

tablets also reveal that ancient Mesopotamian culture had a wealth of musical knowledge, including specifi c tuning modes, scales, string names, and hymns. In ancient Babylon, most music was instrumental, and it was often used to accompany the telling of a story.

In Numbers 1:32-35, we fi nd that the Tribe of Joseph is divided into the Tribe of Ephraim and the Tribe of Manasseh. So why aren’t there 13 tribes total? According to Numbers 3, God set the Tribe of Levi apart for service as priests, so they “step out,” so to speak, of the Tribe tally. To keep things simple, in your Babylon VBS, we’ve based the 12 Tribes on Genesis 49, which lists all of Jacob’s sons.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are considered to be one of the original

Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. King Nebuchadnezzar II commissioned the gardens, supposedly to please his homesick wife, who missed the trees and plants of her homeland in Persia. It’s believed that the gardens were destroyed by several earthquakes after the 2ND century BC.

We’ve partnered with World Vision, Group Cares, and churches like yours with a goal of stamping out malaria in the nation of Mali, Africa. All it takes is love, prayer…and just over a million specially-treated mosquito nets given to at-risk kids! Together, we’ll make it happen—save lives and share God’s love with kids who need to know him.

Order a Bugs Pray-er Clip for each participant at your VBS—plus a few extras to ensure you have enough. These mosquito-shaped clips are powerful reminders of the impact your kids will have on malaria in Mali.

As Tribe members bring monetary donations (any size!) to the Operation Kid-to-Kid Tent, they’ll clip a Bugs Pray-er Clip to the Operation Kid-to-Kid Display Mosquito Net. Soon it will look like a swarm of mosquitoes are trying to slip through the net—but they can’t! A great reminder of all the mosquitoes you’ll keep away from sleeping children in Mali.

Kids and adults will also create personalized Friendship Cards, sharing the message of God’s love with kids in Mali—most of whom have never even heard of Jesus!

On the last day of VBS, each person takes home a Bugs Pray-er Clip as a reminder to keep praying for children in Mali. (Shhh, it’s a surprise so don’t tell!) You’ll tally up your donations and send one check—and the Friendship Cards—to Group Cares.

Your cards and your gift—all of it—will be forwarded to World Vision to buy specially-treated mosquito nets. We’ll track the number of nets sent to Mali through Operation Kid-to-Kid!
