Spectators are reminded that they are not allowed to place their belongings on sidewalks, streets, adjacent properties and boulevards until 24 hours before the start of the parade. This is a city ordinance that will be enforced.

Apple Valley Freedom Days is filled with so many traditions, it is no won-der that the celebration coincides with America’s oldest tradition – the celebra-tion of the nation’s birth. Freedom Days, which is slated June 29 through July 4, aims to be a blast and be filled with pomp with such highlights as fireworks in the park and a parade through the streets of town. The Fourth of July is the culmination of the celebration’s run with a parade at 1 p.m. (see map for details of the route) and the 10 p.m. start for the fireworks, which are launched from Johnny Cake Ridge Park, 5800 140th St. w. People are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets for both the parade and the fireworks, though people should be aware of a city ordi-nance that says places along the parade

route can’t be staked out more than 24 hours prior to the parade. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at Johnny Cake Ridge Park during the fireworks.

Fun Run For those who don’t like to just sit and watch the action, earlier in the day the Freedom Days Fun Run will exit the starting gate at Hayes Park near the Hayes Community and Senior Center. The event includes two- and five-mile races both beginning at 8 a.m. with the Half Pint Half-Mile (for those 10 and under) to follow at approximately 9:30 a.m. Awards will be given to the top five male and female finishers in each age category of the two- and five-mile races, with a trophy going to first place, med-als to second through fifth. The race is the fourth leg of the Groundpounders Grand Prix south metro series of events. Age categories are 14 and under; 15-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60-69; 70-79; 80-89; 90 and older. All participants in the Half-Pint race receive a ribbon. There will be a limited number of T-shirts, so they will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

People can register online through June 25 for $7 (race only) or $15 (for race and T-shirt) at www.cityofapplev-alley.org (click on Online Services, then Online Registration under Parks Pro-gram Registration); or at the race site from 6:30-7:45 a.m. Race-day costs are $14 (race only) and $22 (for race and T-shirt). The event is being supported by Ap-ple Valley Parks and Recreation, Run-ner’s Gate of Lakeville, Bruegger’s Ba-gels of Apple Valley and Anderson Race Management.
