Empowering young people to own their economic success

2012ANNUAL REPORT

To Our Valued Investors and Friends:

Junior Achievement remains dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their future, and make smart academic and economic choices. Our students are the future leaders of South Dakota; we have the opportunity to ensure they are prepared with the skills they need to be college and career ready.

Through the support of our partners across the state, JA is able to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. Junior Achievement helps students envision their future by helping them see the value of staying in school. Our interactive curriculum engages and excites students, leading to stronger critical thinking and decision-making skills and increased confidence.

Participation in JA programs provides students with the ability to build a foundation of financial security and career accomplishment that will benefit them, their families, and their communities. JA of South Dakota is grateful to the thousands of enthusiastic supporters, including more than 2,000 classroom volunteers, who help Junior Achievement impact more than 44,800 students annually with the financial literacy, work-readiness, and entrepreneurship skills they need to succeed.

Your investment in Junior Achievement is a visible and meaningful demonstration of your commitment to South Dakota’s youth. You are helping students develop the competence, confidence, and character needed to compete in today’s global economy.

Supporting our students’ future through Junior Achievement has a lasting impact – one that will pay dividends to our entire state for years to come.

With sincere gratitude,

Steve Kirby, State Board Chair Kayla Eitreim, President JA of South Dakota JA of South DakotaBluestem Capital Company

Volunteer Requirements:• New volunteers attend a training session.• Teach five to twelve one-hour sessions using JA materials and hands-on activities.• Share personal experiences with students to bring the curriculum to life.

Thank you!

jA ExCELLING ThROUGh EThICS

The JA Excelling through Ethics program impacted over 6,100 South Dakota high school students in 23 communities during the 2011-12 school year. Over 300 executive-level business leaders visited high school classrooms to challenge students to understand what ethics means, to help students realize and explore options when making decisions, and to encourage students to always select the ethical choice in their individual decision making processes.

JA Excelling through Ethics evaluation results indicated that students, volunteers, and school administrators find the JA Excelling through Ethics program beneficial and necessary for high school students.

each year, the JA excelling through ethics program allows our students to interact with community members about a topic that is not often discussed in high school. They gain a better understanding of community members and a new insight into a perplexing issue.

PLATINUm SUmmIT AWARd: Junior Achievement of South Dakota was awarded one of highest honors, the Platinum Summit Award, from Junior Achievement USA. The award is given to local JA offices that have reached outstanding success in financial health, program quality, management effectiveness, and program growth. This was the 17th consecutive year the office received the Summit Award.

STATE FARm GRANT: Junior Achievement of South Dakota was awarded a $24,200 service-learning grant from the State Farm® Youth Advisory Board (YAB). JA of South Dakota’s project was entitled “Reverse Roles: Students Teaching Parents about Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship.” Students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels studied these important issues with the help of volunteer role models from the community. The students then shared their knowledge with their parents and guardians to illustrate the importance of making wise financial decisions. JA of South Dakota was one of 64 community organizations to receive the service-learning, youth-led grant across the United States and Canada. This is the third consecutive year JA has received a prestigious YAB grant.

jA COmPANy PROGRAm:Junior Achievement of South Dakota students qualified for the 2011 United States JA Company of the Year Competition. JA teen entrepreneurs from Harrisburg High School got the chance to network with AOL Founder, Steve Case, and with U.S. Small Business Administration chief, Karen Mills. This competition and annual celebration of success held in Washington D.C. allowed the students to demonstrate their business experience and spirit of entrepreneurship. The environment was competitive and engaged business, education, and policy leaders as well as the national media.
