2012 ANNUAL REPORT
2012 ANNUAL REPORT
The mission of Big City Mountaineers is to instill critical life skills in under-resourced, urban youth through transformative wilderness mentoring experiences by working with community-based partners and volunteer mentors to deliver programs that focus on character development and youth success.
The Solution:Big City Mountaineers programs have a proven track record of developing integrity, responsibility, decision-making abilities, and communication skills that result in:
• Increased likeliness to stay in school
• Reduction of violence
• Reduction of drug use
• Increased physical activity
The Need:Under-resourced youth live in communities where as many as 50% of students drop out of high school. Low graduation rates contribute to:
• Unemployment
• Drug use
• Poor health
• Participation in crime and violence
2012 Accomplishments:
2,000 under-resourced, urban youth developed critical life-skills with BCM. 350 adult volunteer mentors logged more than
37,483 mentoring hours in the field.
150 Summit for Someone climbersraised over
$600,000 dollars for BCM kids.
One of the key differentiators between Big City Mountaineers and other wilderness-based youth programs is that BCM combines the educational benefits of the outdoor environment with a 1:1 ratio of youth to adult role models. Unlike programs where a ratio of 10:1 or less is standard, BCM is deliberate in pairing the under-resourced youth we serve on week-long expeditions in a 1:1 ratio with caring adult mentors to ensure that our youth receive the maximum support and reinforcement needed to become successful.
Each BCM volunteer mentor goes through a rigorous screening and training process to ensure that they are prepared with the proper tools and know how to make the greatest impact possible on our young participants.
Year after year, our wilderness mentoring programs prove to effectively achieve lasting results that mean future success for our kids.
Wilderness MentoringGuiding Youth Who Need It Most
Anthony, Age 17Partner Agency: East Oakland Boxing AssociationOakland, CA
“My BCM expedition and mentors taught me that I can challenge myself and work to be a better person. Without these positive role models I never would have learned these lessons. I am excited to take what I’ve learned here back home.”
Results:Anthony is completing his Freshman year in college at the University of California Merced.
Thank you to our 2012 Summit for Someone climbers, who challenged themselves on 15 epic peaks, raising over $600K to ensure that under-served, urban youth have the opportunity to build critical life skills on BCM wilderness mentoring expeditions.
Summit for SomeoneThe BCM Fundraising Climb Series
“Big City Mountaineers does great work with
under-served youth, and I am inspired to help
leverage my experience, relationships and
passion for climbing to benefit kids who need it
most. The Summit for Someone program enables
BCM to change more lives through wilderness
mentoring expeditions that instill critical life
skills.”

Measuring 2012 ImpactWilderness Mentoring Works
In 2012, Big City Mountaineers programs positively impacted under-resourced, urban youth more than ever before.
BCM youth showed a statistically significant gain in the number of developmental assets they posess, through their week-long mentoring expeditions, as measured by the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets Profile.
Developmental assets protect youth from engaging in high-risk behaviors, including violence, alcohol use, and illicit drug use. Developmental assets also promote thriving behaviors. such as valuing diversity, maintaining good health, and succeeding in school.
• Commitment to Learning
• Positive Values
• Social Competencies
• Positive Identity
BCM youth see significantimprovement in these key areas:
Motivation to do well in school, homework performance, and reading for pleasure.
Caring for others, promoting equality, demonstrating honesty and integrity, and behaving responsibly.
Planning and making good decisions, resisting peer pressure, seeking to resolve conflict non-violently.
Feeling in control with high self-esteem and having optimism abut the future.
Big City Mountaineers partners with community-based youth development agencies to identify under-resourced youth that would benefit from the BCM experience, and recruits young participants directly from these agencies. We have chosen this partnership model to maximize ongoing youth impact, and work alongside agency staff to reach out, recruit, and properly prepare youth for this catalyst experience. Agency partners are selected based on the profile of the youth served, their relationship with the youth, measurement methodologies, geographical location, and ability to participate in Big City Mountaineers training and programs. Each BCM expedition includes one staff member from the partnering youth agency to ensure that expedition learning is continued and reinforced when youth return home to their communities.
PartnershipsCreating Impact Together
“Our incredibly brave refugee teenage girls from Nepal and the Ivory Coast had an amazing experience with BCM. These girls made tremendous gains in self-confidence, love of the outdoors and abil-ity to effectively problem solve.”
Sharon Lafer, Agency Leader African Community Center Denver, CO 2012
In addition to youth agencies, collaborative partnership is the lens by which we view all our working relationships. Strong partnerships with outdoor industry companies have been essential to supplying much-needed gear, funding, and promotional support for our youth expeditions and Summit for Someone fundraising climb series.
Through the geneosity of our outdoor industry partners, BCM received more than $600,000 of in-kind support in 2012. Thank you!

71%are from single parent or guardian-led households
Big City Mountaineers works exclusively with under-resourced, racially diverse youth, mostly between the ages of 13 and 18, who often have no experience outside their local neighborhood. The BCM expedition is often their first experience with the wilderness.

Mireya, Age 16A Story of Success
“BCM helped me understand that failures inspire great courage. Courage is hard to own, difficult to acquire, but necessary to succeed. If I had not gone on a BCM trip, many of my fears would have trapped me in a box. These lessons have helped me with AP classes. I now challenge myself in and outside of school.”
Results: Mireya is now President of her high school college-readiness program and is eager to enroll in college next year.
Each year, we witness transformational growth in our kids as their journeys unfold. This year, Mireya’s powerful story inspired our work.
Our Vision Serve More Kids In Need
Big City Mountaineers’ vision is to transform the lives of thousands of urban youth each year through wilderness mentoring experiences that instill critical life skills. Inspired by what they have accomplished with BCM, our youth choose a brighter future – a future that embraces education, purpose, and self-worth while rejecting delinquency, violence and drugs.
Big City Mountaineers is the nation’s leading wilderness mentoring organization for under-resourced urban youth. Our proven curriculum is delivered collaboratively with a vibrant network of urban communities, youth-based agencies, volunteer mentors and supporters, all working in effective partnership. Together we create impact, unified in our singular, extraordinary commitment to serve more kids in need.
BCM Plans for Growth Big City Mountaineers has a compelling vision to lower the statistic that 1.3 million kids a year drop out of school by expanding our programs to reach the kids who need us. In the next few years we will increase the number of:
• Programs we deliver• Youth we work with• Markets we operate in• Partner organizations• Supporters and community engagement
With strong board leadership and commitment to this vision, we look forward to changing the lives of thousands of under-served youth for years to come.
