Oneoftheuniquenicknamesinallofintercollegiate athletics belongs to TheUniversityofAkron. Originally Zippers, athletic directorKenneth“Red”Cochraneofficiallyshort-ened thenickname to theZips in1950.Twenty-five years earlier a campus-widecontest had been conducted to chooseanickname forTheUniversity’sathleticsteams. Suggestions submitted by students,faculty, and alumni included GoldenBlue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks,Hillbillies,KangaroosandCheveliers. Thewinner,freshmanMargaretHamlin,receivedaprizeof$10forZippers,a$6pair of rubber overshoes and a brandnameoftheBFGoodrichCompany. The evolution of Zippy, UA’s mascot,began 40 years ago when the studentcouncildecidedtheUniversityneededamascot. “Zippy” the kangaroo was officiallydeclared theschool’smascotonMay1,1953. In2007,ZippywasnamedtheCapitalOneNationalMascotoftheYear.

VernonCroftwillserveasinterimheadcoachoftheAkronwomen’ssoccerprogramforthe2012season. Croft, who was hired as one of the program’s assistant coaches inFebruary2012,bringsnineseasonsofcollegiateheadcoachingexperi-encetotheAkronsideline. “WeareexcitedthatVernonwillleadourwomen’ssoccerprogramduringtheupcomingseason,”AkronDirectorofAthleticsTomWistrcillsaid. “He has quickly built rapport with our student-athletes, and hishead-coachingexperiencewill allowus toprogress toward the topoftheMid-AmericanConference.” TheZipshavequalifiedfortheMACTournamentineachofthelastthreeseasons. CroftcametoNortheastOhioafterspendingtwoseasonsasanas-sistant women’s coach at Miami (Fla.), where he was in charge of thegoalkeepersandattackingplayersandactedastherecruitingcoordina-tor.EightoftheHurricane’s11starters in2011wereapartofthetworecruitingclassescoordinatedbyCroft. PriortohisstintatMiami,CroftspentnineseasonsastheheadcoachatIndianaStateafterstartingthewomen’ssoccerprogramin1999.HeistheSycamoresall-timewinningestcoach,andledISUtotheMissouriValleyConferenceTournamentChampionshipGamein2008.CroftwasalsonamedtheMVCCoachoftheYearin2004. Croftcoached15all-conferenceperformers,oneMVCFreshmanoftheYearandeightMVCAll-TournamenthonoreeswhileinTerreHaute.Histeamswerehonorednine-consecutivetimeswithNSCAATeamAca-demicAwards,includingaNo.1teamacademicrankingin2004. The2008seasonsawtheSycamoresreachtheMissouriValleyCon-ference finals, the deepest postseason run in program history. Croft’ssquadalsowontheAthleticDirector’sCupwiththehighestteamGPA(3.62)andtheteamreceivedtheNSCAATeamAcademicAwardfortheeighthstraightseason. The2007teamfinishedtheseasononahighnote,notchinga2-0winoverMissouriStateonSeniorDay,thefirstandonlyconferencevictoryoftheseason.WhiletheSycamoresfailedtoqualifyfortheMVCtourna-mentforthefirsttimeinfouryears,CroftproducedfourAll-Conferenceperformers,twothatwerelosttograduation. 2006wasayearofcontinuedgrowthfortheSycamores.LedbytheplayofLaurenPodolskiwhowas the lonecurrentValleyathlete tobenamedtotheMVC’sAll-CentennialTeam,theSycamoresputtogetherasix-matchwinningstreakenroutetofinishingsixthintheleague.Inad-dition,PodolskialsoearnedfirstteamAll-MVCandAcademicAll-MVCplaudits. The Sycamores notched conference victories over NorthernIowaandMissouriState. In2005,IndianaState’sseasonwasheadlinedbya2-1winoverna-tionally-rankedIllinois,thefirstwinforISUoveraBigTenprogram.TheSycamoresalsoadvancedtotheMissouriValleyConferencetournamentforthesecondyearinarow.Followingtheendoftheseason,ISUpulledinthemostconferenceaccoladesinthehistoryofISUsoccerwithfiveplayersnamedAll-Conference. SuccessonthefieldisonlypartoftheprogramthatCrofthasbuiltastheacademicsuccessisjustasimpressive.TheSycamoresearnedthenumberoneacademicrankingamongallNCAADivision Isoccerpro-gramsduringthe2003-04schoolyear,accordingtotheNSCAA,astheir3.54teamGPAledthenation.ItwasthefourthstraightyeartheISUpro-gramwasrecognizedbytheNSCAAforitsacademicperformanceandthefourthstraightyeartheSycamoreswerethehighestrankedschoolintheMVC. Smith,a formergoalkeeperatUA, started thefinal sixgamesofthe 2010 season, leading her squad to a 4-1-1 mark and recordingtwocleansheets.Smithfinishedthe2011seasonwith34savesin10gamesandagoalsagainstaverageof0.94-thelowestseasonGAAeverrecordedbyanAkrongoalkeeper. SmithbeganhercollegiatecareeratAustinPeay,whereshemade12startsand18totalappearancesasasophomorein2007.Shefin-ishedhercollegiatecareerwithacombinedrecordof14-12-1betweenhertimeatAPSUandUA. Accordingtolegend,the“WagonWheel”trophytracesitsbeginningstothespringof1870whenAkronindustrialistJohnR.BuchtelsetoutforthetownofKentinsearchofasitetoestablishacollege.InthemuddyOhiofields,however,hiswagonbecameboggeddownintheareawhereKentStateUniversityiscurrentlylocated.Whenhorsespulledthewagon,awheelcamelooseandbecameburieduntilitwasdiscoveredin1902duringtheconstructionofapipelinealongtheWesternReserveTrail.
