SOCIETY OF HISPANIC PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS
Dear Corporate Supporter, On behalf of the student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) at The University of Texas at Austin, we would like to invite you to become involved with our chapter as we celebrate our 30th Anniversary by supporting this year’s programs and events. SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize their fullest potential and impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development. In addition, we help to promote career development, self-esteem, and pride within the Austin community and throughout the UT campus. The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers has many opportunities for corporate involvement and support during the upcoming 2012-2013 academic year. Our events include several conferences, both at the national and regional levels, various outreach programs within our community, and numerous opportunities for our members to develop leadership and communication skills. Many of our events have proven to be successful, including weekly study nights, our Manitos/Manitas mentoring program, scholarship workshops, networking socials, and mock interviews in conjunction with other organizations and offices within the Cockrell School of Engineering. As the SHPE President and a student leader at UT, it is my goal to fulfill our mission and inspire others to be just as passionate about their goals. I have witnessed the influence of this organization and its continued success in developing remarkable leaders over the years. With the help of our officer board, I will strive to continue our legacy of excellence.
All of the opportunities we offer could not happen without generous support from our corporate partners. UT-SHPE would like to extend a genuine thank you to our ongoing supporters. Without your support, we would not be able to fulfill our mission with the incredible success we have had over the years. We hope to continue providing your organization with access to the premiere source for quality Hispanic professional engineers and technical talent. Enclosed you will find more details about the events and programs we have planned for this year along with our annual budget. If your company would like to help us fulfill our mission and contribute to developing our members into the leaders and innovators of the future, please contact me. Thank you for taking the time to learn about UT-Austin’s chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. We hope you choose to become part of our SHPE familia. Best Regards,

SOCIETY OF HISPANIC PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS
History
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in
1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles. Their objective was to form a national organization of professional engineers to serve as role models in the Hispanic community. The concept of Networking was the key basis for the organization. SHPE quickly established two student chapters to begin the network that would grow to encompass the nation as well as reach countries outside the United States. Today, SHPE enjoys a strong but independent network of professional and student chapters throughout the nation.
In 1982, The University of Texas at Austin student chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers was chartered, in conjunction with the Pi Sigma Pi Minority Academic Engineering Society, under the direction of the Equal Opportunity in Engineering Program in the Cockrell School of Engineering. Since then, the UT Austin student chapter has grown to include over 150 registered national members, and more than 180 local members. It has dedicated its existence to increasing the enrollment and retention of Hispanics throughout the Cockrell School of Engineering in order to better represent the changing percentage of Hispanics within the state of Texas. SHPE continues to promote the advancement and support of more than 900 Hispanic engineering students currently enrolled in the school by providing opportunities that encompass the five pillars of SHPE:
Academics Chapter Development Leadership Development
Community Outreach Professional Development
This kind of commitment is possible through collaboration and partnerships with corporations, alumni, the Cockrell School of Engineering community, the University as a whole, and the state of Texas. This support has created a history of success, and shows promise for continued growth and excellence through the future.
Vision
SHPE's vision is a world where Hispanics are highly valued and influential as the leading innovators, scientists, mathematicians and engineers.
Mission Statement
SHPE changes lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize their fullest potential and impacts the world through STEM awareness, access, support and development.
Statement of Values
We are brought together by heritage, social responsibility and desire to improve the equality of all people through the use of science and technology. We value excellence in education, professional pursuits and leadership. We obtain excellence through integrity, empowerment, achievement, diversity and continuous improvement.

UT Austin SHPE Events
Chapter Development
General Meetings
The general meetings are utilized as a way to relay information and events to members. These bi-
weekly meetings consist of guest speakers that are usually provided by the corporate supporter for
the meeting. Guest speakers present on topics such as:
interview skills, resume tips, effective study habits,
business etiquette, leadership, community outreach,
and professional development. Companies are
recognized for their generosity and community
involvement through advertisements before and during
meetings. Food and beverages are provided. (Expected
attendance: 120 or more)
Gone to Engineering
UT-SHPE will participate in Gone to Engineering to

SHPE Socials
Each month, SHPE plans to host socials to
provide members with a chance to interact
with other members, organizations, and
company representatives in an informal
environment. Previous socials include Blazer
Tag, Karaoke, Dodgeball on Ice, Jumpoline, etc.
We are currently scheduled to have 5 socials
throughout the year. (Expected attendance: 40)
Fajita Fundraisers
Every year our chapter makes a diligent effort to raise
additional funds to support all of the events and
programs we offer for our members. Twice each
semester we host our infamous Fajita Fundraisers
across campus. With help from supporters like you, we
can increase the funds we raise.
Night at the Union
SHPE members will enjoy an evening of bowling
and pizza at the famous Underground Union on
the UT campus. This event kicks off the year as the
first social and gives underclassmen a chance to
learn about SHPE and meet some of the officers.
(Expected attendance: 50)
SHPE Señoritas Program
SHPE Señoritas is a new program which strives to
unite Hispanic female engineers. This program was
established to help increase the number of females
by providing a stronger support system through
socials and networking events. We aim to have at
least 20 members and two events.

Manitos/Manitas Mentoring Program
This program provides underclassmen
with a “Big Brother/Sister” to mentor
and assist them during their transition
to UT. Upperclassmen will inform
underclassmen of all events and
meetings held by SHPE to keep them
involved in the organization. They will
also help underclassmen members
succeed throughout their first or
second year at UT. In addition, this
program allows upperclassmen to build their leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
The Manitos/Manitas support network connects students with resources and creates lasting
friendships within the organization. This year we aim to have at least 35 pairs and 3 events including
paintball, kayaking, and our end of the year newlywed game.
SHPE Athletics
SHPE organizes intramural teams throughout the
school year in order to promote a healthy lifestyle
and create a sense of comradery. The SHPE members
participate in flag football, volleyball (2 teams),
basketball, outdoor soccer (2 teams), indoor soccer,
water volleyball, and softball. SHPE has been known
to make the playoffs in numerous sports each year.

SHPE Corporate Tailgate
The SHPE Corporate Tailgate is a way
to bring students, professional SHPE
members, and recruiters together in
an informal setting. The organization
reserves a space on campus where
members are invited to eat barbecue
and socialize until the UT football
game begins. Each corporate
supporter will be allocated two tickets
to the football game (UT vs. West
Virginia). Professional members from the West Virginia area will be invited to attend. In 2009 and
2010, SHPE and SWE co-hosted joint tailgates which proved to be very successful. Co-hosting
another joint tailgate for this Fall is under consideration. (Expected attendance: 60)
SHPE Conference
The SHPE Conference is the largest Hispanic
technical conference in the nation. The
conference provides educational, technical,
developmental, and networking opportunities
for students. The SHPE Conference attracts
thousands of students, corporate
representatives, and community leaders. The
agenda includes: technical and career
workshops, a career fair, a graduate institute,
corporate tours, the National Academic
Olympiad, technical paper competitions, and
the Extreme Engineering challenge. The SHPE Conference also offers a Pre-College Symposia which
encourages middle school and high school students to explore career opportunities in the STEM
fields. UT Austin was well represented at the 2011 conference in Anaheim, CA. We anticipate an
even larger turnout for the 2012 conference in Fort Worth, TX. Currently, we are aiming to set a
chapter record by helping at least 30 members plus 5 Jr. Chapter members attend the conference.
