CELEBRATING 16 YEARS

Page 4: 2012-2013 RTT Annual Report

Rebuilding Together Tulsa (RTT) had another fantastic year. I am constantly amazed how RTT uses limited resources to provide safe, secure and weatherproof homes to so many families, and this year is no exception. This past year, through our partnership with AEP/PSO, we were able to improve the energy efficiency of 140 homes. Our 408 volunteers provided 9,659 hours of service to impact a to-tal of 162 families. RTT is one of the top affiliates of the Rebuilding Together organization and a leader in the not for profit community for providing safe, secure and weatherproof homes to low income homeowners. It has been my privilege to serve as the Board Chair of such an efficient, stable and impactful organization.

“Love begins at home, and it is not how much we do... but how much love we put in that action”.- Mother Teresa

Rebuilding Together Tulsa celebrated sixteen years of providing home repairs for our fellow Tulsans. Over the last sixteen years the repairs, programs, and structure of the organization have changed and evolved. However, what has remained the same is the Tulsa community’s commitment to helping their neighbors in need. Our clients are amazed when they hear how Rebuilding Together Tul-sa’s programs work. “You mean strangers, people who don’t know me, are going to help me? Why in the world would they do that?” That is the where the love comes in…love community, of helping others and making a difference. The time volunteers spend mak-ing repairs to the home is markedly valuable. The time they spend listening to stories, looking at family photos, and connecting with the homeowner is beyond measure. Thank you to the clients who opened their homes to us, to the volunteers who gave their time to help, the donors who provided critical resources to make it all happen. Sixteen years of rebuilding homes and lives in Tulsa…How sweet it is!

Dear RTT and their Donors,

I want to thank you for your help fixing our roof. To know that there are people who care is a wonderful thing. I was having to worry every day how I would be able to fix the roof and keep my family in our home, but you helped me, and, for that, I will forever be very grateful. You all are our angels, because you took your time to help when I thought no one cared.

Forever Grateful,

Mr. and Mrs. G

Ms. Sandy is a retired member of the air national guard. She has lived in current home for 14 years. She and her husband, Jim, have redone a number of their past houses, and she alone has done a great deal of her current home. She has painted every surface on the interior. She removed the carpet and discovered beautiful hard woods. She has cultivated the entire yard with grass, plants, and shrubs.

“I wanted to tighten my home and take care of the earth, but I didn’t know how to go about it. This sum-mer was the 2nd summer where paying my utilities became such a struggle for me on a stable, but fixed income.”

Ms. Sandy received Energy Efficiency repairs from Rebuilding Together Tulsa including a new door, attic insulation and sealing air gaps within her home.

Ms. Sandra says there are two things she loves, her home and her family. She was devastated when the two were separated in 2010.

Her daughter Jenny is wheelchair bound and suffers from Multiple Sclerosis. For the past three years, Jenny has lived in a nursing home because their home was not safe and wheelchair accessible.

“The work that needed to be done….I’m on social security, and I didn’t have the money to do it. I knew I had to get it done or the nursing home wouldn’t release my daughter to me be-cause it wasn’t a safe environment,” Ms. Sandra said. “She was heavy on my heart. You guys came to our rescue.”

Because of the generosity funders and the dedication of weekly volunteers, Rebuilding To-gether Tulsa’s Safe at Home Program made it possible for Jenny to come home in the Summer of 2013.

Bathroom modifications, including a roll in shower, widened doorways, and new flooring created a safe living environment for Jenny as she returned to her home and to her moth-er. A ramp was also put out the back of the house to provide for a second wheelchair ac-cessible exit from the home in case of a fire.

“My bathroom is awesome. I have never had a walk in shower. It fits me,” Jenny said. “It’s beautiful and I am glad to be home.”

All of the work was done by dedicated weekly volunteers and was completely free to Ms. Sandra and her daughter. Ms. Sandra loved having the volunteers in her home and says she learned a lot from them while they were there.

“Everything they did. It was love. It wasn’t work. It was love that they put all over that house. I love them all,” Ms. Sandra said. “It tugs at your heart when people are so generous to you and don’t ask for anything in return.”

“It’s a new start for both of us. We’ve both had a birthday since she has been home, and it is just a new beginning for us.”

Because of the generosity of people like you, Ms. Sandra and Jenny are together once again and can continue to make memories in their home together.

“You guys came to our rescue.”
