@ValpoBasketball......and the @HorizonLeague- @ValpoBasketball has been picked to win the @HorizonLeagueregular season title.- The Crusaders received 40 of the 44 first-place votes in the#HLMBB preseason poll.- This marks the first season since 2002-03 (Mid-Con) that@ValpoBasketball has been preseason league favorites.- The Crusaders were the only team to place two players on the#HLMBB preseason First Team All-League as well.

...nationally- @ValpoBasketball has also been tabbed the preseason@HorizonLeague favorite by @CBSSports and @AthlonSports,among others.- The Crusaders were ranked seventh in the preseason Mid-MajorPower Rankings by NBC Sports College Basketball Talk(@CBTonNBC).- @ValpoBasketball is currently ranked 18th in the Mid-MajorTop 25 poll, voted on by mid-major coaches and produced [email protected] @ValpoBasketball earned 3 points in the preseason @AP_Top25poll.- The Crusaders had not received votes in a national poll since a 4-week stretch near the end of the 2010-11 season in the coachespoll.

...looking back at last year- @ValpoBasketball claimed its first @HorizonLeague regular sea-son title in 2011-12, winning the crown by two games.- The Crusaders earned the right to host the #HLMBB postseasontournament by winning the regular season and advanced to thechampionship game.- @ValpoBasketball played at Miami in the first round of thepostseason NIT, the Crusaders’ 11th postseason trip in the last 17years.- The Crusaders won 22 games overall in 2011-12, their 12th 20-win season in the last 19 years.- @ValpoBasketball boasted the #HLMBB Coach of the Year(Drew), Player of the Year (Broekhoff) and a second First Teamselection (Van Wijk).

...looking ahead- Valpo will close out its pre-Christmas slate at home on Saturdayafternoon at 1:35 p.m. against Purdue Calumet.- The Crusaders will have a week between games, returning toaction Saturday the 29th at 2012 NCAA Tournament participantMurray State.

Handle the Basketball- Valpo committed 19 turnovers in its loss to Oakland on Mondaynight and is now averaging 16.5 turnovers/game on the season.- The Crusaders have committed at least 16 turnovers in five oftheir last six games.- The Crusaders’ turnover margin/game currently sits at -2.6.- Valpo has faced double-digit deficits in the turnover column intwo of its last three games (19-9 Oakland; 23-10 New Mexico).

Who Needs to Shoot Well?- Each of the first eight games of the season for @ValpoBasketball,the team with the better shooting percentage won.- But in their last three games, the Crusaders have seen the teamwith the worse shooting percentage earn the victory.- Valpo’s loss at New Mexico was its first when out-shooting anopponent since a 57-55 loss to Milwaukee on Dec. 29, 2011.- The Crusaders’ win at Missouri State was its first despite gettingoutshot since winning at Milwaukee last season on Jan. 27, 55-52.- The winning team in each of Valpo’s last three games has aver-aged 19 more free throw attempts than the losing side.

Hitting the Boards- The Crusaders enjoyed a 37-19 advantage on the boards inSaturday’s win at Missouri State, and followed with a 38-32 edgeat Oakland.- The +18 advantage on the glass was the highest for@ValpoBasketball since a 47-24 edge in a win vs. Youngstown St.on Jan. 7, 2011.- Valpo currently leads the Horizon League with a +5.0 rebound-ing margin, including three games with double-figure advantages.

Home Sweet Home- The Crusaders play each of their next two games at the ARC,where they are a perfect 5-0 this season.- @ValpoBasketball went 14-3 at home last season and is 212-48(.815) over the last 18 years at the ARC.- Valpo is averaging 72.2 ppg, shooting 47.4% from the floor(44.6% 3-point) and has a positive assist:turnover ratio at homethis year.

#BeatingTheBuzzer- Kevin Van Wijk put back a missed free throw with 1.3 seconds leftto send the Crusaders into overtime with Kent State on Nov. 18.- Erik Buggs made his first free throw with 4.7 seconds left to cutthe deficit to two points before Van Wijk’ s putback.

- @ValpoBasketball had just a 7.5% chance to win following 2KSU FTs with 7.2 seconds left, according to @kenpomeroy.- It was the first buzzer-beater for @ValpoBasketball since Buggs’coast-to-coast layup to win at Detroit last season.- The last four buzzer-beaters to win or send games to overtime for@ValpoBasketball have all come at the basket, dating back to 2007.

Matt Kenney- Kenney scored all 16 of his points in the win over NorthernIllinois in the second half.- Kenney was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor (3-for-3 from 3-point range) over a span of 9:31 against the Huskies.- Kenney filled up the stat sheet in the OT win at Kent State,finishing with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists.- Kenney matched his career high with seven assists while notcommitting a turnover in the Crusaders’ win vs. Chicago State.- Kenney currently is ranked 17th in @ValpoBasketball historywith 261 career assists.- Kenney averaged 7.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as ajunior for the Crusaders in 2011-12.- Kenney came off the bench for his final 19 games of the sea-son, but still finished second on the team with 27.8 minutes/gm.

Bryce Drew

Head coach Bryce Drew returns for his second season at the helm of the Valparaiso men’s basketball programin 2012-2013 after leading the Crusaders to the Horizon League regular season title in his first year as head coach.

Drew led Valpo to 22 victories in his rookie season at the reins, including a 14-4 mark in Horizon Leagueplay to capture the league regular season title by two games. He also guided the Crusaders to the Postseason NITas the program earned a postseason berth for the 11th time in the last 17 seasons. Drew was honored as the Horizon

League Coach of the Year for his efforts on the bench, while he coached two First Team All-League selections in Kevin Van Wijk and RyanBroekhoff, the latter of whom was named the league Player of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-American.

Valparaiso University director of athletics Mark LaBarbera announced at a press conference on the Valparaiso campus on May 17, 2011 thatDrew had been hired as the 21st head coach in the history of the Crusader men’s basketball program. Drew, the most decorated player in Crusadermen’s basketball history, spent the six seasons prior to his hiring as head coach as a member of the Valparaiso coaching staff, including theprevious five years as associate head coach. Drew, who helped guide Valpo through their transition into a top-ten league in the Horizon League,became just the fourth new head coach of the Crusader men’s basketball program in the last 31 years.

Drew joined the Valparaiso coaching staff prior to the 2005-2006 season, and over his six seasons on the bench as an assistant/associate helpedlead the Crusaders to 102 victories. With Drew on the staff, Valpo moved into the Horizon League in 2007-2008 and returned to the postseasonwith a trip to the College Basketball Invitational, where it won its first-round game at Washington. In his final season as associate head coach,he helped guide the Crusaders to 23 wins and a postseason berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament while receiving votes in the ESPN/USAToday Top 25 Coaches Poll for four consecutive weeks.

Over his tenure as a member of the Crusader coaching staff, Drew has coached 13 players who have gone on to play professional basketballoverseas. He has helped coach Valparaiso as it has led the Horizon League in scoring twice, while the Crusaders paced the conference this pastseason in defensive field goal percentage in league play. Valparaiso also set the Horizon League single-season record for 3-pointers made (330)during the 2007-2008 season. Drew was recognized among the league’s and nation’s top assistant coaches by Hoop Scoop and Jeff Goodmanof FoxSports.com and also has been named among the Top Recruiters of Chicago by the Chicago Sun-Times.

As a student-athlete, Drew cemented himself as the best player in Valparaiso men’s basketball history. Drew, who arrived at Valpo afterearning Indiana Mr. Basketball honors and being named Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year in 1994, began his career by garnering Mid-Continent Conference Newcomer of the Year and Mid-Con Tournament MVP honors as a freshman. Drew, a four time All-Conference honoree,shined during the conference tournaments, earning All-Tournament Team honors each of his four seasons and picking up three Mid-ContinentConference Tournament MVP awards. He was also twice decorated as Mid-Con Most Valuable Player, one of only four players to be so honoredtwice in their career. Drew’s career culminated as a senior by being named a Third Team All-American by the Basketball Times.

In addition to his individual accolades, Drew led the Crusaders to four Mid-Continent Conference regular season championships, fourtournament titles and three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Drew, the career leader in points (2,142), three-point field goals (364) and assists(626) at Valpo, etched his name into the American consciousness in 1998 when he hit “The Shot” in the Opening Round of the NCAA Tournamentto beat Ole Miss. The play, in which Drew caught a tip pass from teammate Bill Jenkins off a full-court feed from Jamie Skyes, won Drew anESPY award and gave Valpo its first NCAA Tournament win in school history, propelling the Crusaders to the Sweet Sixteen.

Drew also excelled internationally during his time on the court with the Crusaders, playing for the gold-medal winning Team USA at the WorldUniversity Games in 1997. Following his collegiate career, Drew again made school history when the Houston Rockets drafted him with the16th pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, the first time a Crusader had been chosen in the first round. Drew’s NBA career lasted six seasons with theRockets, Chicago Bulls, and Charlotte and New Orleans Hornets, with his best season coming in 2000-2001 when he started 41 games for theBulls, averaging 6.3 points and 3.9 assists per game. A prolific shooter, Drew set a Hornet record when he connected on nine consecutive three-point attempts. Twice as a pro, he competed in the postseason, with Houston in 1999 and again in 2002 as a member of the Charlotte Hornets.

Over the course of his NBA career, Drew scored over 1,000 points and made 37% of his three-point attempts. In 1999, he was honored bythe NBA with the Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Award for sportsmanship. Drew played alongside 12 NBA All-Stars during his time in the NBA,including three players who were named among the Top 50 NBA Players of All Time. He also played under a quintet of head coaches who havecombined for five NBA Championship rings. Following his six seasons in the NBA, Drew played professionally overseas for a season, playingfor Reggio Calabria (Italian Serie A) and Pamesa Valencia (Spanish Liga ACB) before returning to the States to join the Crusader coaching staff.

Drew is twice a member of the Valparaiso University Hall of Fame, as he was inducted as an individual in 2003 and as part of the 1997-1998Sweet Sixteen team in 2009. He also has been honored as one of the 150 most influential people in Valparaiso University’s 150 years.

Drew graduated from Valparaiso in 1998 with a degree in sports management and a minor in business. He and his wife Tara currently residein Valparaiso.
