CROSS COUNTRY Review

The 2012 campaign was an unforgettable one for the women’s cross country team. The team can name seven top ten finishes, a BIG EAST cross country coaching staff of the year, and a first appearance at the NCAA Championships as 2012 accolades.

UConn saw their highest national ranking, 14th, this season with head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough leading the team. Grove-McDonough and assistant coach Nick Stenuf were named BIG EAST Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year for the 2012 season. Grove-McDonough was also named Northeast Region Coach of the Year for her outstanding work with the team this season.

The season began with the Dartmouth Invitational where the team took fourth place overall. Junior Lauren Sara, who was the 2012 inaugural BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of the Week, took second place and junior Allison Lasnicki coming in at fourth overall.

The first true test was the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational. The Huskies posted their third consecutive fourth

place finish at the Griak Invitational. Sophomore Lindsay Crevoiserat made her season debut and led the Huskies finishing in sixth place overall. Lasnicki followed closely, coming in seventh to propel the squad to fourth place behind nationally ranked Iowa State, Weber State and hosting Minnesota.

Racing without the team’s top runner, the Huskies would go up against 21 nationally ranked opponents at the Wisconsin Invitational. Despite resting Crevoiserat, the Huskies still managed to beat two nationally ranked opponents and finish in 19th place.

UConn had an outstanding showing at the BIG EAST Championship where they placed second behind National champions Georgetown and ahead of nationally ranked Providence, Villanova and Notre Dame. This was an all-time best for the team.

The Huskies carried their momentum into the NCAA Regionals where they finished second earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The team had a remarkable day with all five scorers earning All-Region honors by finishing inside the top-25. UConn was the only school of the 34 in the region to accomplish this feat and one of only 10 teams in the country. Lasnicki was the first Husky over the finish line and placed third overall. Sara and Crevoiserat followed Lasnicki, placing 10th and 14th, respectively. McNiff finished 18th and Zrinyi 22nd.

For the first time in program history, the Huskies made a showing at the NCAA Championship where they stormed their way to an eighth place finish. Crevoiserat led the Huskies and she crossed the finish line just two spots shy of All-American status in 42nd. Sara placed 66th. Lasnicki took 73rd, McNiff placed 109 and freshman Ju-lia Zrinyi took 125th. The future looks bright for the Huskies as they return all but one in 2013.

at the NCAA Championships propelling the team to First Team All-American status with an eighth place finish. The coaching staff will look to Mania as a major championship scorer with the ultimate goal of qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the 800 in addition to leading the DMR squad.

Lindsay Crevoiserat had an outstanding freshman campaign with a third place finish at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in the 3,000m and ran a personal best of 9:21 in winning the Outdoor ECAC Championships. Crevoiserat was the anchor leg of the All-American DMR team that finished eighth at the indoor NCAA Championship. Crevoiserat, holding the school record in the mile and 3,000m, will look to build on last year going for a BIG EAST Championships qual-ifying for the NCAA Championship.

Julia Zrinyi comes to UConn as one of the most accomplished fresh-man in program history. She has represented her native Canada at both the IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille, France, and the IAAF World Junior Championships in Barcelona, Spain running the 800m at both events. She will be a strong addition to the squad and will add to the expectations of a DMR that looks to make its way to the podium at the indoor NCAA championships in 2013.

Lauren Sara is coming off a great cross country campaign and after redshirting both the indoor and outdoor season in 2012, will immedi-ately make an impact in the distance events. She will be a strong con-tender for an indoor BIG EAST title in both the 3,000m and 5,000m, while her presence during the outdoor campaign will be a big boost with the goal of returning to the outdoor NCAA Championships in the 10,000m.

Coming off a sensational cross country season, Allison Lasnicki will be a major piece of the distance puzzle. Big things are expected from Lasnicki in the indoor 3,000m and 5,000m as well as the outdoor 10,000m

Shauna McNiff is expected to continue where she left off as a major contributor and provide major points in both indoor and outdoor track. Shauna will also con-tend for a podium place in the BIG EAST distance events and has designs on qualifying for the NCAA indoor and outdoor Championships.

The Huskies have great depth in Stephanie El-lis and Allison Cooper. Additionally, the UConn staff is looking forward to a strong freshman class of distance and mid-distance runners to con-tribute to Connecticut’s strong relays and provide additional scoring oppor-tunities in the 800, 1,000 and the mile.

Sprints and Hurdles

The Huskies return a dy-namic group of sprinters for the 2013 campaign with two-time All-Ameri-can Celina Emerson lead-ing the way. Joining Em-erson will be two NCAA qualifiers in senior Ana Groff and junior Mada-layne Smith.

Short SprintsThe junior class will also bring experience in the more technical event sprint hurdles with Madalayne Smith and Chantal Scott. Smith, a NCAA outdoor qualifier in 2012, will try to establish herself as one of the nation’s best sprint hurdlers. The depth in the sprint hurdles will come from three newcomers Sarah Bowens, Odrine Belot and Briana Pulido. Belot and Pulido will both have an immediate im-pact in short sprints and hurdle events, while Bowens will mainly focus on the short sprint hurdles. The remaining two newcomers that will help the Huskies in 2013 will be Deysha Smith-Jenkins and Dominique Smalls. Once again the coaching staff is confident that this talented group of sprinters will not only leave their mark on the BIG EAST but will also leave it on the national stage. Long Sprints

Emerson, who ran the 400m leg on the nation’s eighth fastest DMR team at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boise, ID, also added to her resume in 2012 BIG EAST 400m Outdoor Champion. Emer-son has now established herself as one of the nation’s best 400m runner and is looking for her first All-American individual status. Groff has also moved herself to the national level in 2012 and is looking forward to more success in 2013 at the 800m in both the conference and at the national level.

A conference runner-up in the 400m is Tiffany Daley who also ran the first leg on a school record breaking 4x400m relay team at the ECAC Outdoor Championships is now ready to become a national level 400m runner. To provide depth in the long sprints will be a pair of sophomores, Nyanka Joseph and Brianna Allen, that had an immediate impact in our conference championships in 2012. Allen anchors the 4x400m relay team who took third place finish while setting a new program record at the BIG EAST Indoor Champion-ship. During the outdoor season, Allen also ran on a school record breaking 4x400m relay team at the ECAC Outdoor Championships and will now look to establish herself as one of the top sprinters in the east. The newcomer for the long sprint is Paris Taft. She will be looking to contribute in the 400, 500, 800 and relays for the Huskies in 2013.

ON THE FIELD...

Success in the women’s track and field program comes from a bal-anced excellence across all areas of competition and has earned na-tional recognition on all fronts. Anchoring the continued success has been a long tradition of the field event athletes who have contrib-

uted in creating an established excellence for the Huskies.

Vertical Jumps

There have been 15 All-America honors in the high jump with two of those honorees returning members of the team. Natasha McLaren made the indoor sea-son a sweep for the UConn high jumpers as she won both the New England and ECAC indoor titles. Add the outstanding ef-fort in placing third at NCAA Indoor Nationals to her portfo-lio and the tandem could once again warrant national elite sta-tus. McLaren was also the only member of the team to qualify for the Olympic Trials where she gained invaluable experi-ence. Junior Ilva Bikanova took home her second NCAA Second

Team All-American title during the indoor season along with the

BIG EAST Championship title. Senior, Jasmine Cribb, a former Penn Relay College Division champion and record holder at 5’ 11 ¼”, has been diligent in working at the technical aspects of the event to position herself as a part of potentially the finest group of vertical jumpers in the country. The pole vault will rely on freshman Lauren O’Connell, runner-up at the high school New England Championships. Gabby Attanasio will add to the group looking to gain equal status to other ar-eas.

Throws

Four-time All-American Victoria Flowers will pres-ent a formidable challenge to other national level throwers as she concludes her redshirt year with the highest aspirations of be-ing a NCAA Champion. Her runner-up status at indoor nationals in 2010 brought her name to the forefront. Her desire to leave a legacy compara-ble to or beyond the out-standing performances of the elite UConn perform-ers should be enough mo-tivation to distinguish her as one of the most signifi-cant student-athletes in UConn history.

In 2011, Flowers threw the indoor implement 72’ 11 ½” for her third All-American weight throw title. In the same year, she shattered the all-time New England meet records and overall records in the shot put and weight throw, 53’ 5” and 68’ 9”, respec-tively. Joining Flowers will be freshman eligible Megan Chapman, a for-mer Connecticut and New England high school champion in the discus.

Multi-Events

It has been awhile since three-time Heptathlon All-American Terry Roy and Angela Corson - BIG EAST, ECAC, and New England Champion – competed at championship levels in the multi-events. The void seems to be filled with the emergence of transfer student Saija Bikanova.

In her first year of collegiate track she will be looked upon to score at the BIG EAST level. Classmate Briana Pulido will partner with her as she gains experience in the all-encompassing event.

Horizontal Jumps

Senior captain Brittany Power leads a young corps of jumpers in the long and triple jumps. Power’s preseason progress continues to point towards the goal of scoring at championship meets. High school talents Melodee Riley, Odrine Belot and Sarah Bowens will be counted upon to address the needs in this area. All were high school All-Americans with triple jumper Riley placing fourth at the outdoor Nike championships, Bowens runner-up in the long jump at the indoor Nike championships as a junior, and Belot a five-time All-American in the shuttle hurdle relays. As multiple state champions, the future seems secure but the question will be their ad-justment to this year’s demands.

Bill Morgan is in his 32nd year of coaching at the University of Con-necticut and is in his tenth season as head coach of the UConn women’s cross country/track and field programs, after serving as an assistant coach for 22 years and as interim head coach in 2003-04.

Morgan has been a part of all 42 track and field championships at UConn. He specializes in coaching field events and multi-events, for which he has gained a national reputation for excellence after guiding numerous UConn athletes to collegiate, national and Olympic Trials successes. His total of 212 conference champions includes the programs two NCAA Regional Champions, 45 ECAC, 88 New England, 58 BIG EAST titles and 45 All-American titles. Morgan’s programs have earned numerous team titles, highlighted by the recent outdoor ECAC Cham-pionship three-peat from 2008 to 2010, and four-straight indoor ECAC titles from 2007-2011 (UConn did not enter the 2009 competition). The team has earned BIG EAST Championship titles in 1986, 1995 and 2008. The Huskies have been the BIG EAST Championship runner-up a total of 10 times, five in indoor and five in outdoor competition.

The Huskies excelled in 2012-13 highlighted by nine All-American titles, five New England champions, four ECAC champions, three BIG EAST champions and a team victory in claiming their seventh consecutive New England Championship title. Under Morgan, the UConn squad broke 16 school records and had five BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors. Senior Heather Wilson, a five-time All-American, earned the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Award and was a candidate for the NCAA Woman of the Year. Morgan guided high jumper Natasha McLaren to a third place finish at the NCAA Championship where teammate Ilva Bikanova was also named an All-American and senior Victoria Flowers to her first outdoor All-American title.

The 2010-11 season was another successful season as Morgan led the team to its fourth consecutive ECAC Indoor Championship en route to completing the year with eight All-Americans. Under Morgan, who was named the Northeast Region Indoor and Outdoor Coach of the Year for the fifth-straight year, the Huskies broke 19 school records, set a new team record with 11 NCAA East Qualifiers and nine NCAA Fi-nals Qualifiers, and captured both the ECAC Championship and New England Indoor titles. Morgan coached Victoria Flowers to her third All-American title in the weight throw and the title of Northeast Region Athlete of the Year. Additionally, Morgan guided Ilva Bikanova to her first All-American in the outdoor high jump for UConn’s 13th overall high jump All-American nod. The Huskies had their highest ranking of the season at No. 18 as they concluded the indoor campaign ranked No. 22 in the nation.

In 2009-10 Morgan led the squad to its third-straight ECAC outdoor and indoor titles. UConn dominated the New England Indoor Champi-onships for the fifth-straight year (29th overall) and the squad placed second at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. The program cel-ebrated eight individual BIG EAST Titles and 10 individual ECAC Ti-tles. In honor of the incredible season, Morgan was named Northeast Region Coach of the Year for the fourth-straight season after leading sophomore Victoria Flowers and junior Trisha-Ann Hawthorne to All-America status in the weight throw and the 100m dash, respectively. Hawthorne, coached by Clive Terrelonge, had a seventh-place finish in the outdoor 100m at the NCAA Championships garnering UConn’s first-ever NCAA Outdoor All-American. Morgan and his staff guided seven student-athletes to NCAA Qualifying marks.

In 2008-09, UConn recorded its second consecutive BIG EAST Indoor title as well as the ECAC Outdoor Championship crown and its 28th

New England Indoor title. In combination with an outdoor BIG EAST Runner-Up trophy, the team recorded another superlative season. Rec-ognized with a No. 13 indoor National ranking and its seventh place showing at the NCAA East Regional, the program placed an exclama-tion point to its year. Within the team context, Morgan coached Carin Knight to two more All-American titles adding to her remarkable ca-reer along with freshman Victoria Flowers, who earned her first All-American title as the top freshman in the country. In addition, eight athletes were named to the All-East Regional Team for finishing in the top five at the East Regional. Morgan was honored as the NCAA In-door and Outdoor Coach of the year

In 2007-08, UConn recorded three consecutive team titles, winning the BIG EAST, ECAC and New England Indoor Championships in a two week period. The BIG EAST title was the team’s first ever indoor crown after registering four runner-up trophies as a program. Morgan’s charges then captured the New England title as he was honored as the New England Indoor Coach of the Year along with freshman phenom, Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, who won the Athlete of the Meet honors.

Morgan’s team continued its surge and was spectacular in winning the ECAC Indoor crown to defend their title from the previous season, becoming only the ninth program to win in the 30-year meet history. Morgan was further acknowledged by being named the year’s NCAA Division I Northeast Region Women’s Coach of the Year.

Morgan led former triple jumper, Tamara Highsmith, and high jumper, Carin Knight, to national level performances as Highsmith beat Mi-ami’s Tabia Charles’ record at the BIG EAST Championship with a jump of 44’ 1.25”, dominated the ECAC competition and concluded with a seventh place finish at the national championship to become an All-American. Knight joined her with BIG EAST and New England titles while earning the All-American status with a sixth place finish in the high jump.

UConn followed the indoor season with their first ECAC Outdoor title, displaying the magnitude of such a dominating year. With nine athletes continuing to the NCAA Regionals, four made the All-Regional Team

and went on to the national championship where Highsmith mirrored her indoor performance with another All-American title. The team was not finished as Knight, Highsmith and alumni Deirdre Mullen (five-time All-American), Bethany Hart (two-time All-American) and current volunteer coach, April Garner, participated in the teams’ fifth consecu-tive Olympic Trials. Mullen climaxed a stellar season by finishing fourth (6-3.25) and positioning herself for the 2012 Trials. The brilliant season was capped with members making their respective national teams as Highsmith made the USA Under-23 team and Hawthorne made the Ja-maica Junior National team, while Phylicia George made the Under-23 Canadian team.

In 2007, Morgan’s program produced its first NCAA Regional Cham-pion in freshman high jumper Carin Knight along with four BIG EAST Champions. His team placed fourth at the BIG EAST Championships, their best outdoor finish in 12 years. The program produced 11 NCAA Regional qualifiers along with two ECAC Athletes of the Week in Amanda Martin and Jillian Sullivan. Again, Morgan’s team made histo-ry, marking seven new program records in their outdoor performances. Jillian Sullivan became UConn’s first ever All-American for the wom-en’s cross country, as she picked up Academic All-American status as well. Both cross country and track and field earned All-Academic teams honors after both the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

In 2004, Mullen became his second national team member as she earned a bronze medal at the NACAC Under-23 Championship in Sherbrooke, Canada. One of Morgan’s former athletes, three time All-American Ter-ry Roy, also became the Junior National Champion in the heptathlon and participated in the World Junior Championship in Korea.

Morgan continued the team’s progress toward national recognition as he coached Mullen to a conference record-breaking performance in the high jump. Mullen cleared 1.83m (6’) to capture first in the high jump and set a BIG EAST Championship record while following that perfor-

mance with a 1.88 (6-2.00) jump at the regional championship. As impressive has been alumnus Hart who became UConn’s first Win-ter Olympian during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy – 3 months after competing on our USA World Team as the country’s second ranked hammer thrower in Helsinki, Finland.

As interim head coach in 2003-2004, Morgan’s cross country team placed 4th of 41 teams at the New England Championship for its best finish in nine years. His indoor squad captured the New Eng-land Championship while placing sixth out of 44 teams at the ECAC Championships. Morgan coached Garner to the New England and ECAC Championship in the hurdles as the season concluded with six individual conference champions, two school records and an All-American.

In July of 2000, he accompanied Hart and Toppin to the U.S. Olym-pic Trials in Sacramento where Hart was the top collegian in the competition. The two were his fourth and fifth student-athletes to qualify for the trials. He also coached Roy, Brantle and Berutto to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Atlanta in June of 1996, Roy to the 1992 trials in New Orleans and Mullen to the trials in Sacramento, Calif. in 2004. In 2012, Morgan coached sophomore high jumper Natasha McLaren to her first Olympic Trials. Morgan has taken part in the USA Track and Field Women’s Junior Elite Throws Camp in San Diego as well as the USA Track and Field Women’s Elite Heptathlon Summit in Tucson, Arizona. He has also written published articles on topics related to imagery in sport. In 2002, Morgan was acknowledged as an AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year for distinguished service at the University of Connecticut. Morgan has been a part of many memorable program highlights since taking the helm of the women’s track and field program – none more significant than his team’s status as an All-Academic Team. Continuing the decorated academic success at Connecticut, the 2009 cross country team was named a USTFCCCA All-Academ-ic Team for the seventh year in a row. The track team was also honored in 2010 as an All-Academic Team. Phylicia George (’10), Sara Leslie (’10) and Heather Wilson (’12) were both honored as BIG EAST Scholar Athletes of the Year. Morgan presently resides in Coventry. He retired after 30 years of public school teaching; 29 of those in the Columbia School District as a physical education instructor. Morgan was an undefeated track and field coach at Porter for five years, going 51-0 in dual meets. Among the many age-group athletes he has coached, Mor-gan developed three national champions in the shot put, discus and pentathlon. Morgan received his Bachelor of Science degree in health and phys-ical education from Southern Connecticut State University in 1972 and his master’s degree from SCSU in the same field of study in 1973. In 1986, he received an advanced degree in sport biomechan-ics from UConn.

The Huskies saw three sprinters qualify for the NCAA Championships. Hawthorne joined Mandela Graves-Fulgham, George and freshman Kristen Brown to compile the NCAA Qualifying 4x100m relay team. In total, UConn saw nine sprinting records broken on the season.

During the 2009 season, Terrelonge led four of his athletes to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor National Championship in their individual events. At the Regional meet with Terrelonge coaching five of the ten total athletes representing UConn, the program recorded its best finish in school history. Earlier that season, the Huskies won their second consecutive ECAC Championship title.

During the indoor campaign, UConn defended its title as BIG EAST Champions as Hawthorne won both the 60m and 200m, while Graves-Fulgham broke her own school record to claim the 400m title. In the process, both gained a berth to the NCAA National Championship. With two champions in three events, and four athletes in the finals of the 60m dash, Terrelonge’s sprinters amassed over 50-percent of the team’s total BIG EAST points.

Terrelonge and the Huskies had an outstanding year in 2008. En route to the Hus-kies’ first ECAC Outdoor Championship title, his sprint group led the way accounting for nearly half the Huskies’ points. The 2008 indoor season proved to be historic as UConn pulled off the “triple crown” in the championship season, winning the New England, BIG EAST and ECAC Championship titles. It was the team’s first ever BIG EAST Indoor title, their second consecutive ECAC crown and their third straight New England Championship victory. At the conclusion of that historic season, the program was recognized by the USTFCCA with Northeast Head Coach, Assistant Coach and Field Athlete of the Year honors in Bill Morgan, Clive Terrelonge, and Tamara High-smith, respectively.

Terrelonge and the Huskies performed well during the outdoor campaign in 2007, where five of the Husky sprinters competed in the NCAA Regionals. The Huskies were third at the BIG EAST Championship, which was the highest finish in school his-tory before the UConn victory in 2008. In recognition of his achievements, Terrelonge was named one of the United States Emerging Elite Coaches and was selected to participate in the United States Track and Field (USATF) Elite Men’s and Women’s event camps, which were held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. July 14-19, 2007.

Prior to coming to UConn, Terrelonge worked at Brown University and his alma mater, Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. In 2004, Brown had its first women’s Ivy League 100m champion over six years. At Lincoln, Terrelonge helped lead the women’s squad to a NCAA Division III Championship and produced eight All-American sprinters/hur-dlers that year. During his time as an assistant coach, the men captured six NCAA indoor and outdoor titles and two runner-up trophies. The men’s sprinters also set five NCAA records and earned over sixty All-America honors.

As a collegiate competing for Lincoln University, Terrelonge earned 19 Division III All-America honors in the 400m, 800m and 4x400 relay. He is a former NCAA two-time 400m champion, three-time 800m champion, and still holds the 800m NCAA Division III outdoor record. He was an accomplished professional athlete as a World Champion and two-time Olympian for Jamaica.

Terrelonge was inducted into the NCAA Division III Track and Field Hall of Fame at the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Track and Field Championship Banquet in Waverly, Iowa on Wednesday, May 25, 2005. In 2012, he was part of Lincoln Uni-versity’s inaugural Hall of Fame class. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in health and physical education from Lincoln in 1994. Terrelonge currently resides in Storrs, Conn.

Coach Terrelonge with Volunteer Coaches Latasha Wal-lace (left) and April Garner (right) Associate head coach Clive Terrelonge enters his ninth year with the University of

Connecticut Women’s Track and Field Team. Since his hire in 2004, the Connecti-cut program has become an increasing force on the national stage. His sprint/hurdle group has garnered multiple BIG EAST and ECAC titles, as well as NCAA All-America Honors. For his efforts, Terrelonge has been a five-time recipient of the USTFCCA Northeastern Region Coach of the Year.

The most recent 2011-2012 indoor season was highlighted by the DMR, which earned NCAA All-American Honors, running 11:10.24 to earn eighth place at Nationals. Two-time All American and DMR 400 meter leg, Celina Emerson, followed her successful indoor season by reaching the NCAA East semifinal during the outdoor campaign. Joining Emerson from the sprint/hurdle group, were teammates Ana Groff and Mad-eline Smith in the 800 and 100H, respectively. The outdoor season also included a record breaking 4x400 relay team, to help the Huskies reach an overall 2nd place finish at the ECAC championships.

Phylicia George, former Husky hurdler, represented Canada in the 2012 Summer Olympics. She reached the final of the 100m hurdles running a personal best of 12.65. Coached by Terrelonge during her collegiate career, George made history by becom-ing the first UConn alumni to reach the Olympic games in the sport. Competing in the 2012 Olympic trials were 2011 graduate Trisha Ann Hawthorne and 2005 graduate April Garner.

Between 2005 and 2011 the title of BIG EAST Champion in the 60m and 100m has been in the sole possession of UConn sprinters. The 2010-2011 campaign Hawthorne and Emerson named second team NCAA Indoor All-Americans in the 60m dash and 4000m DMR, respectively. Emerson became the youngest UConn sprinter to receive All-America honors, while Hawthorne added to her already extensive list of accolades. Hawthorne was the first athlete in UConn history to qualify for the NCAA Champion-ships in two sprint events and the first track athlete to earn NCAA All-American honors by placing seventh in the 100m at the 2010 Outdoor NCAA Championships.

Terrelonge also helped guide 2010 graduate Phylicia George to success both region-ally and nationally during her career as a Husky. George was a two-time qualifier for the NCAA National Championships, in the 2010 indoor season for the 60H, and in 2009 as part of the Outdoor 4x100 relay team. She currently holds the sprint hurdle records for the 55H, 60H, and 100H. Off the track she received NCAA Academic All-

America, and ESPN The Magazine Aca-demic All-District First Team honors. The 2010 season saw another excellent year for the Huskies and Terrelonge. Once again, Terrelonge was honored as the indoor and outdoor Northeast Region Coach of the Year. The Huskies claimed both the indoor and outdoor ECAC Championships as well as the New England Championships. UConn also placed third in the BIG EAST In-doors while finishing second at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Haw-thorne claimed seven titles overall, in-cluding four BIG EAST Championships. She was crowned Athlete of the Meet at both ECAC Championships as well as the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. She then went on to become an NCAA

Outdoor All-American in the 100m.

Andrea Grove-McDonough begins her fifth year as assistant women’s track & field and concluded her second year as the coach of cross country after working with the team for three seasons. Responsible for cross country and the middle distance/distance events on the track, Grove-McDonough has rapidly improved the cross country program and distance corps at Connecticut. In 2011, the cross country team was nationally ranked for the first time in program his-tory followed by the Huskies reaching their first ever NCAA Championships in 2012 after their highest ranking of fourteenth.

Grove-McDonough has also helped to continue the high standards of aca-demic success at UConn. The 2009, 2010 and 2011 cross country teams were honored as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.

2010 graduate Sara Leslie was honored with the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award. The award is given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or perfor-mances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.

The 2012 cross country campaign set a new precedent for the continu-ally growing success of the team as the Huskies reached their first NCAA Championships taking home an impressive eighth place and best rank-ing of 14th place. The squad had their best results at both the BIG EAST Championships and Northeast Regionals taking home second place at both earning Grove-McDonough BIG EAST Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year and Northeast Region Coach of the Year.

After making great strides in the 2009-10/2010-11 cross country seasons, Grove-McDonough led the Huskies to several program milestones in the 2011-12 campaign. The Huskies were nationally ranked (No. 28) for the first time in program history and sophomore Lauren Sara became only the fourth UConn runner to advance to the NCAA Championships as an individual. The Huskies greatly improved at the Penn State Invitational where they captured a second place finish coming ahead of nationally ranked teams, a common occurrence in the 2011 season.

Under Grove-McDonough’s guidance, the distance runners have continued to set new school records and earn All-America status. In 2010-11, the Huskies

broke the 800m, 1,000m, 1,500m, 5,000m, 3,000m Steeplechase, 10,000m and the 4x800m school records. Heather Wilson and Brigitte Mania were named Indoor All-Americans, while Megan Cunningham, Brigitte Mania and Lauren Sara earned Outdoor Honorable Mention All-America.

Before beginning her coaching career at UConn, Grove-McDonough enjoyed a highly successful professional career in which she won two National Titles and competed internationally in every event from the 800m to the 10,000m. In 2008 Grove-McDonough won the Canadian Olympic Trials in the 10,000m and posted the seventh fastest time in Canadian history in the event. During her twelve years as a professional athlete, Grove-McDonough was a seven time National Team Member, a finalist in the 1,500m at the 1999 World University Games in Palma de Mallorca, Spain and was selected to represent Canada at the 2008 Chiba Ekiden relay in Japan. She also finished ninth at the 2007 Canadian World Cross Country Trials.

Grove-McDonough has garnered an impressive record of six top-three finishes at the Canadian National Championships. She was ranked second in Canada in the 5,000m in 2002, 2006 and 2007 as well as being the No. 1-ranked 10,000m runner in 2008. She holds personal bests of 2:07.12 for 800m, 4:11.04 for 1,500m, 15:31.29 for 5,000m and 32:29.86 in the 10,000m.

Grove-McDonough was also a standout performer throughout her col-legiate career at the University of Minnesota, culminating with a fifth place finish in the 1,500m at the 1996 NCAA Outdoor Championships, where she earned All-American status. She also represented the University of Minnesota in the mile at the 1995 Indoor NCAA Championships. Grove-McDonough was a captain for the Gophers from 1994-1996 and an All-Big Ten Academic Selection. She holds a degree from the University of Minnesota in Human Resource Management.

Grove-McDonough returned to the collegiate scene in 2007 when she helped coach the men’s and women’s cross country squads at the University of Montana. She began coaching and managing elite-level athletes in the mid-dle and long distance events beginning in 2006, including coaching an athlete that represented Canada at the 2008 World Cross Country Championships in Ireland. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Grove-McDonough lived in Missoula, Montana for twelve years and now resides in Mansfield, Conn. with her husband, former All-American decathlete, Troy McDonough.

Nick StenufVolunteer Coach | 1st SeasonDistanceNazareth College (‘08)

Nick Stenuf enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach for the women’s cross country and track and field programs. His first season with the cross country squad the team went to its first ever NCAA Championships, earned its highest national ranking and was part of the coaching duo that earned BIG EAST Cross Country Staff of the Year.

Stenuf was a five-time Division III All-American at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. He was the programs first ever All-American in cross country and track and field, and the schools first ever three-season All-American athlete. In 2006 he was named the Atlantic Coast Athlete of the year. He also served as a three year captain for the track and field team.

“This is the first time we’ve had a dedicated volunteer assistant coach with the cross country program, so I’m really excited about how Nick can help solidify this team as a national contender, and with his energy and passion for the sport he is a great fit,” said women’s cross country head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough.

Upon graduating from Nazareth College with a degree in Business Education, Stenuf went on to Florida State University to complete a Master’s Degree in Sports Management. While at Florida State University, Stenuf competed post-collegiately and was a Graduate Manager with the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field program during the 2009-10 season.

For the past two years he has served as an intern and volunteer assistant at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. He helped assist the head coach in guiding the men’s cross country program to a Division II NCAA 12th place finish and one All-American Individual. This same All-American athlete, Stenuf helped guide to an NCAA qualifier in three different track events for the 2012 outdoor season.

Post-collegiate, he has qualified for three US Track and Field Championships (2009 Indoor 800, 2010 Indoor 1500, 2010 Outdoor 1500).

indoor The indoor season was an extremely successful one for the Huskies who were named New England Champions this season, their 7th consecutive title. Assistant head and cross country head coach, An-drea Grove-McDonough was named Northeast Assistant Coach of the Year.

The indoor track and field accolades did not end there. The team had a total of six All-Americans for the season. Senior Heather Wilson - 800/DMR, sophomore Natasha McLaren - high jump, junior Ilva Bikanova - high jump, freshman Lindsay Crevoiserat - DMR, sopho-more Celina Emerson - DMR, junior Brigitte Mania - DMR were all named All-Americans for their accomplishments in the indoor season. In addition to being named an All-American, Wilson was also given the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete award, and named a BIG EAST Athlete of the week. Crevoiserat, McLaren, and Bikanova were also all named BIG EAST Athletes of the week.

Six indoor school records were made during the 2012 season. Wilson set a new record for the 800m (2:04.34), Crevoiserat set a new school record for the indoor mile (4:41.49), and junior Shauna McNiff now holds the school record for the 3k (9:26.96). In field events, McLaren set a new record for the high jump (1.86m - 6-1.25), and Gilsenan set a new school record for the pole vault (3.67m-12.25). Tiffany Daley, Celina Emerson, Ana Groff and Nyanka Joseph collectively set a new school record for the 4x400 (3:41.54).

The team took sixth place overall at the BIG EAST Championship where Bikanova was the only Husky to earn a title for her first place performance in the high jump. Emerson finished second place in the 400m dash (54.56), while Wilson also finished second in the mile (4:47.50).

The Huskies once again took first place at the New England Cham-pionship. Senior Danielle Lyte took first place in the 60m dash (7.58) and second in the 200m (24.65). Senior Ana Groff won the 500m for the second consecutive year (1:13.37).

UConn finished fourth at the ECAC Championship out of 20 teams total. McLaren took first for high jump, while McNiff placed first in the 3,000 meter run, both qualified for the NCAA championships with their performances.

Wilson, Bikanova, Mania, Emerson, McLaren, and Crevoiserat all competed at the NCAA Championship for UConn. Wilson finished fifth overall in the 800 meter (2:05.18), while McLaren and Bikanova placed third and 11th in the high jump, respectively. The DMR team of Mania, Wilson, Emerson and Crevoiserat finished eighth (11:10.24).

outdoor

The UConn women’s outdoor track and field team continued the suc-cess of their indoor season with a strong outdoor campaign. Seniors Heather Wilson and Victoria Flowers each earned All-America hon-ors. Additionally, junior Brigitte Mania was named BIG EAST Athlete of the week.

Crevoiserat now holds the record in the 3k (9:21.88) and Lasnicki set a new record for the 5k (16:33.47). Flowers set two new school records for the hammer throw (63.24m) and shot put (16.18m). Lastly, Allen, Emerson, Groff, and Daley set the record for

2011 Cross CountryThe 2011 Cross Country campaign saw the Huskies reach unprec-edented heights while still leaving the squad wanting more in the years to come.

The Huskies finished 9th at the Roy Griak Invitational at the Uni-versity of Minnesota, besting ranked teams BYU and NC State. This result propelled the Huskies to a 6th place ranking in the Northeast Region and earned them votes in the national coaches poll.

At the Penn State National Invitational, the Huskies were again led by Sara (3rd, 20:55). Crevoiserat (10th, 21:40), McNiff (15th, 21:52), and Wilson (18th, 22:01) each earned top-20 finishes. The Huskies earned a second place team finish ahead of nationally ranked squads in host Penn State (20th) and Duke (26th). Following this result, the Huskies earned a national ranking of 28th, the programs first national ranking in program history.

The BIG EAST championships in Louisville, KY played host to the most competitive women’s cross country meet in the nation, with the 28th-ranked Huskies entering as one of seven nationally ranked squads. Lauren Sara (8th, 20:16) earned all-BIG EAST honors, while Lindsay Crevoiserat (35th, 21:17) was the 6th freshman across the line.

The NCAA Northeast Regional meet in Buffalo, NY saw the Huskies improve six places from a year ago to grab 7th place as a team. Lau-ren Sara’s (6th, 20:54) finish earned her a spot at the NCAA Champi-onships in Terre Haute, IN, while Lindsay Crevoiserat (22nd, 21:26) also earned All-Region honors. Sara took 53rd at the NCAA Cham-pionships, her first finish outside of a top-10 all season, capping a sensational sophomore season that saw her finish as the Huskies top runner in each of her races. Sara was only the fourth runner in Husky history to make it to the NCAA Championships.

2011-12 track & field The 2012 season was a historic one for the Husky women’s track and field program with a total of nine All-America accolades and nine UConn broken records. While the UConn squad excelled in competi-tion, they were most importantly recognized as a Division I All-Aca-demic team and had five individuals named to the 2012 USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Team.

Connecticut sent six student-athletes to the 2012 Indoor NCAA Championships and two to the 2012 Outdoor NCAA Championships compiling nine All-American honors. Senior Heather Wilson, nomi-nated for the NCAA Woman of the Year, earned three All-America nods during her final campaign donning her UConn garb as she finished fifth in the indoor 800 and eighth in the indoor DMR for two First Team awards, while adding a Second Team seat after finishing 11th in the outdoor 800m. Joining Wilson on the indoor First Team DMR lineup was junior Brigitte Mania, sophomore Celina Emer-son and freshman Lindsay Crevoiserat. UConn saw two Huskies grab All-American titles in Boise in the high jump with sophomore Natasha McLaren taking third place (First Team) and junior Ilva Bi-kanova in 11th (Second Team). The final Husky of the 2012 campaign taking home hardware was four-time All-American Victoria Flow-ers who finished 15th in the hammer for a Second Team seat at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

As a team, the Huskies collected their seventh consecutive indoor New England Championship crown with 14 individuals reaching the finals. Connecticut finished sixth at the indoor BIG EAST Champion-ships and fourth at the ECAC Championships. Despite Wilson and Crevoiserat claiming first place at the outdoor ECAC Champion-ships, the Huskies took home the silver medal for the second con-secutive year. While the team posted a ninth place finish at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships the team had two Huskies capture conference titles in their respective events.

in the Classroom The University of Connecticut women’s track and field and cross country teams have been a success not only in compe-tition, but in the classroom as well. The cross country team has been named an NCAA Division I All-Academic team for the past seven years, while the track team has earned that distinction for the past six. The main criteria for the award is that the cumulative grade point average for all student-athletes for indoor and/or outdoor track and cross country must be 3.00 or higher. In 2010, Phylicia George and Sara Leslie were named BIG EAST Scholar-Ahlete Sport Excel-lence Award winners. The awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST sport based on academic cre-dentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. The Huskies had 14 team mem-bers acknowledged on the BIG EAST All-Academic team for achieving a 3.0 or higher for the 2011-12 academic year. In 2008, George was one of 10 individuals chosen for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team. In 2007 former UConn distance standout, Jillian Sullivan, earned Third Team Academic All-America honors by ESPN The Magazine as announced by the College Sports Infor-mation Directors of America (CoSIDA). The program attributes its success to its work ethic and support staff. The team devised a plan to help enhance academic performance and promote team unity through organized learning groups. The plan is flexible, low-impact and positive. All historical feedback from programs like this have indicated it is successful at achieving the objective set forth. Also helping to achieve the team’s objective are its support staff, including now retired John Miceli of the Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes. The Huskies welcome a new support staff with Lindsay Darcy who has taken over the women’s track and field program. CPIA is a unit within the Division of Athletics with the primary goal of assisting student-athletes in reaching their educational goals while they compete in intercollegiate athletics. As academic affairs officers, CPIA counselors function as liaisons between the athletic and academic communities. Counselors work closely with coaches, faculty and a variety of campus resources in order to help facilitate students’ successful transition into college life by instituting academic and social support programs, including, but not limited to, Counseling, Pre-Advising, Tutorial and Life Skills Programs.

in the Community

The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics believes that the responsibilities of student-athletes reach beyond classrooms, libraries, fields and courts. Community service is an integral part of the UConn experience, as Husky student-athletes contribute count-less hours each year to a number of worthy causes. The women’s track team has also started a charitable initiative on the team since the 2009-10 season, “Team Hand-Off”. Each month, student-athletes from the program can give a presentation to their coaches and teammates for a specific charity that has af-fected their lives. Each month, the staff and program donate $50 to a pair of charities chosen by the student-athletes. Some orga-nizations that have been chosen include, Chituka Village Project,

Windham Area Interfaith Ministry, Sail to Prevail, Samaritan Purse, Teen Challenge and Malawi Desk Program. The women’s track and field/cross country teams have been active in several com-munity service activities, including working a drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross that raised a total of $30,000 for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The team has also been individually recognized for its efforts as Leah Williams, a 2006 graduate and former UConn volunteeer coach, was chosen to represent UConn

at the 2005 NCAA Leadership Conference. Each school is permitted to send one representative to the event. Williams now works with HuskySport at UConn, working with student-athletes in the local Hartford communities. The NCAA Leadership Conference provides NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, decision-making and problem-solving skills. The leadership conference also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities. The five-day conference consists of daily exercises and activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to a group. The conference is an outreach of the NCAA’s highly-successful CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. Criteria for selection include the student-athletes’ demonstrated ability and strong desire to be a leader and the student-athletes’ potential to benefit significantly from a leadership development experience. In order to be eligible for the conference, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing, and must have athletic eligibility remaining for the following academic year.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING The strength and conditioning program for University of Connecticut is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate teams. UConn track members have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn student-athletes. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights in which the UConn track athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training and heavy negative workouts into their total strength-training program. Maureen Butler has been the strength and conditioning coach for the women’s track and field program for the past six seasons. Butler graduated from the University of Connecticut in 2003 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology.
