Oakdale continues to be a flourishing commu-nity with a proud his-

tory and a promising future. It's an area ripe with leisure pursuits and abundant shopping -- over 30 restaurants and coffee shops, two movie theaters, and a variety of fitness centers.

We also pride ourselves on our commitment to the great out-doors. Over 25 parks dot the com-munity, including the Oakdale Nature Preserve and its "jewel," the Discovery Center. The center has wildlife exhibits, works from featured local artisans, cozy seat-ing and reception facilities, all in a scenic woodland setting. Visi-tors will also discover a historic one-room schoolhouse nearby. The Parks and Recreation Depart-ment, housed in the Discovery Center, offers programs and orga-nizes events throughout the year, including the Mystery Egg Hunt, Haunted Hayride and Winter Wonderland.

In the central part of town is Richard Walton Memorial Park,

located just west of City Hall. It offers a bandshell, weekly sum-mer farmers market, and a re-nowned skateboard facility. Rich-ard Walton Park also hosts the annual city celebration, Summer-fest, each June. Other recreational offerings include easy access to the state's popular Gateway Trail and the Oak Marsh Golf Course.

Oakdale is committed to pre-serving its housing stock and has made a variety of loan programs available to residents for home improvements. The city also has an effective code enforce-ment program that enables quick responses to issues such as junk vehicles, property maintenance

and noxious weeds. The city of Oakdale puts great

emphasis on the environment and on reducing its carbon footprint. Since 1975, the city has distrib-uted free trees to residents. The Environmental Management Commission immerses itself in such programs as energy conser-vation, tree preservation, water quality and the Adopt-a-Wetland Program, which promotes the protection of the 200-plus bodies of water in the city.

Oakdale is an inviting city with a lot to offer. We hope you enjoy your stay!

Oakdale Veterans Memorial Secures City Loan

Plans for an Oakdale Veter-ans Memorial outside of City Hall have been gestating for years. State Sen. Chuck Wiger proposed funding for the proj-ect in the state Legislature's spring session in 2012, but there was not enough support to fund the memorial.

Frustrated but not beaten, the Oakdale Veterans Memorial Committee did not give up. In June 2012, the committee secured a loan of up to $40,000 from the Oakdale City Council to finance the memorial, and construction is slated to be finished in time to open for Veterans Day.

The committee is still col-lecting donations for the proj-ect, as well as selling memo-rial paver bricks to interested donors. For more information about contributing to the project, visit the city of Oakdale's website at www.ci.oakdale.mn.us

Nestled in the heart of Washington County, the city of Lake Elmo

is a picturesque community with a population of 8,182, located 10 miles east of downtown St. Paul. Covering 24 square miles, the community is noted for its roll-ing hills and rural ambiance. The city features attractive chains of lakes, taking its name from the largest lake. Lake Elmo is home to an extensive park system, in-cluding the Lake Elmo Regional Park Reserve. With a variety of housing options available, Lake Elmo is a highly desirable resi-dential community.

The city enjoys excellent ac-cessibility to the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area via Interstate Highway 94 and State Highways 5 and 36. Major em-ployers located near Lake Elmo include 3M, the Hartford and Imation Corporation, and School Districts 834 and 622.

The city of Lake Elmo is de-veloping plans to accommodate a population of 24,000 by 2030, as

a result of an agreement with the Metropolitan Council. Plans call for capitalizing on the character of the town's Old Village through the development of new hous-ing units, pedestrian and bicycle trails, a central park and public facilities.

Lake Elmo and the surround-ing area offer a multitude of out-door recreational opportunities, including swimming, fishing, water skiing, boating and sail-ing, as well as numerous winter sports such as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. The area is also well known for its wildlife habitat and excellent hunting op-portunities.

History and nature are both important to the city of Lake Elmo. The Lake Elmo Regional

Park Reserve is a 3.5-square-mile area that is being returned to its natural state to reflect the land as it was before settlers arrived. Nearly 80 percent of the park is a natural preserve, and the remaining 20 percent is devoted to active recreation, including a boat launch, three separate campgrounds and equestrian trails through the woods. Outside of the Lake Elmo Park Reserve, there are over 15 city and county parks that residents can enjoy. The nearby St. Croix River offers yet another popular destination for relaxation and recreation.

Lake Elmo Library Branches Off

In the summer of 2011, the Lake Elmo mayor and city council surprised quite a few people when they an-nounced their decision to break away from the Washington County library system and start out on their own. When Washington County an-nounced it would once again reduce hours at its Lake Elmo facility, the city council decided to take matters into their own hands.

Setting up and stocking a library is no easy feat, but since residents were already paying for the county system, taxes will not go up to fund the municipal library. In June 2012 a location was selected for the new library, and the branch is planned to open before the end of the year.

Like many areas of the Midwest during the 1800s, farming was the main occupation for most of the pioneers who came to call Oakdale their home. European American immigrants were first drawn to Oakdale Township for its rich prai-rie land interspersed with white, burr, and black oak savannahs.

Wheat was one of the most important crops that early farmers produced, but in the frigid winter months they harvested a different crop entirely - ice. The main winter industry in Oakdale was cutting ice from Tanners Lake and storing it for use during the warm summer months to keep food cold.

Bernard B. "Bun" Cyphers was Oakdale's first known white settler. He arrived in 1848 and soon after built a hotel and meeting place. However, John Morgan was the first to permanently settle the area. In 1849, Morgan built a hotel on

the Stillwater-St. Paul road about a half-mile east of what is now Inter-state 694.

Railroads also played a large role in the development of Oakdale, transforming it from a sparsely

populated township to the prosper-ous suburb it is today. The St. Paul and Stillwater Short Line Railroad and St. Paul and Taylors Falls Rail-road tracks were constructed in the early 1870s. Oakdale became one of the railroad stops and had its own station.

Modern-day Oakdale prides itself

in being a suburb that is open to change and willing to adapt when needed. Interstate 694 bisects the city, which has attracted industry and retail businesses to its major intersections at Highway 36, High-way 5, Tenth Street and Interstate 94.

Oakdale also has a strong parks system and Washington County

branch library, and is home to the Discovery Center, which offers an opportunity for kids and adults to take in a full day of learning and adventure in a natural park setting.

Stop by and stay awhile in Oak-dale, where residents and visitors alike find a warm, family feeling with many recreational and com-mercial opportunities.

Histor y of OakdaleHistory

• Originally 36 square miles in the pioneer days, Oakdale is now a third of that size.

• Oakdale's recorded history dates back to the late 1840s, but it didn't become an incorporated city until 1974.

• According to the 1875 census, the majority of Oakdale Township residents came from far-flung places. Only 42 percent were born in Min-nesota.

• In 1949, Oakdale Township resi-dent William S. Moscrip was named one of the "100 Living Great Men of Minnesota." A highly regarded dairy farmer, he was one of the most famous people in Washington County.

"The brown thrush sings on every tree,The cat-bird trills his gushing glee,

And not less happy, love, are weBy the triplet elms of Elmo.

Wild roses bloom along the shore,With pinks and harebells covered o'er,

Their fragrance on the breeze they pourThat stirs the elms of Elmo."

These verses from John Boxell's song, "The Elms of Elmo," describe many of Lake Elmo's great outdoor amenities in the 1800s. Although it was written more than 100 years ago, most of the song's lyrics still ring true today.

Lake Elmo has seen continual population growth, but its great-est spur in development may be in the years ahead. From 2000 to 2005, the population grew by over 1,000 residents, and today nearly 8,200 people call Lake Elmo home. The city is planning for continued strong growth in the next two de-cades, especially in the historic Old Village area.

Former resort hotspotBass Lake Station was the home

of the first post office in the town-ship. This is the area now common-ly referred to as the Old Village. The St. Paul, Stillwater and Taylors Falls Railroad passed through Lake Elmo, which made it easy for tour-ists to reach the lake.

Railroad promoter and St. Paul businessman A. B. Stickney pur-chased the land between the rail-road tracks and the lake, where he built a 58-room hotel.

Lake Elmo, the town's largest lake, was originally called Bass Lake. It's well known for its deep, clean water and has always been a popular fishing spot.

In 1879, railroad entrepreneur

Stickney renamed the lake and the village. He named it after St. Elmo Murray, a character in the romantic novel, "St. Elmo," which his wife enjoyed.

In the years leading up to the 1900s, Lake Elmo saw steady growth without becoming a boom-town. It enjoyed success with its re-sort hotel and Lake Elmo Residence Park, which was along the eastern side of the lake.

Strong growth continued as the years went on. During the 1920s, Stillwater Road was paved, which allowed the village to establish itself as a major shipping point and dairy center.

The city continues to be known as a rural area, but future develop-ments are in the works. Although civic leaders expect a portion of Lake Elmo's agricultural fields will give way to suburban homes, they anticipate that its small-town ambi-ance will remain.

Lake Elmo's abundance of pictur-esque lakes and outdoor recreation-al opportunities will ensure that "The Elms of Elmo" hits home for current and future residents.

"Should coming years to you and me,Bring thoughtful care, as it may be,

Yet still, in fancy, we shall seeThe three green elms of Elmo."

The North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District describes itself as “a community collaborative dedicated to educating and empow-ering all learners to excel in our changing world.” With this mission in mind, School District 622 pro-vides lifelong educational opportu-nities for residents of all ages. The district’s wide variety of Community Education programs serve infants, centenarians, and everyone in be-tween.

From highly trained teachers in its Stepping Stones preschool to nation-ally recognized programs at North and Tartan high schools, District 622 is always striving to be the best. Staff members work with families and teachers to choose the most appropriate school programs and set-tings so children can find success.

Elementary SchoolsEach elementary school provides

an academically and socially bal-anced approach to education for students in grades kindergarten through five. For each grade level, the district has a comprehensive curriculum that includes essential outcomes, outlining what students are expected to know and be able to do.

District 622 offers free all-day, Monday-Friday kindergarten for its students. This initiative is part of the district’s commitment to provid-ing a top-notch education focused on ensuring academic success for all. The program is a full-day cur-riculum that provides students with a strong educational base as they begin their academic careers.

Middle SchoolsDistrict 622’s middle schools

serve students in grades six through eight. The middle schools are built around the “house” concept, in

which each grade has a majority of its classes located in one area. A strong curriculum is at the center of the middle-school foundation, with grade-level expectations outlined for each subject. Aside from traditional coursework, a number of academic and social opportunities are offered outside of the classroom.

High SchoolsPreparing students for the future

is the core of District 622’s high school program. A comprehensive curriculum is designed to chal-lenge the interests and abilities of the diverse student body. Whether students are bound for college or a career, District 622 staff work to en-sure that all graduates are prepared for that next step.

Parks and Recreation

Oakdale offers an abundance of leisure options for residents and visitors alike.

The east metro suburb has more than 20 parks, which provide in-dividuals and families with many ways to enjoy the outdoors. The mix of parks includes some that are primarily open space and hiking trails, while others are fully devel-oped with playground equipment and ball diamonds.

Richard Walton Memorial Park is the site of many of the biggest city-hosted events. Every June, the community's Summerfest celebra-tion is held at the park. Since 2010, Oakdale's annual Independence Day fireworks show takes place at the park as well.

The Oakdale Discovery Center provides fantastic recreation op-portunities. Packed with rotating art exhibits and an aquarium, the

Discovery Center remains open year-round to give visitors a chance to appreciate nature in all its glory. The Oakdale Nature Preserve, which consists of 220 acres of open land, surrounds the Discovery Center.

There are activities at Oakdale parks year round, whether it's a winter snowshoe hike at the Oak-dale Nature Preserve's Discovery Center, swimming at Tanners Lake or a Little League game at Goose-pond Park.

During the summer and early autumn, a farmers market is held at the Discovery Center every Wednesday afternoons so residents can come together and share their harvests.
