The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) manages 11 upland game species including quail, pheasant, dusky (blue) grouse and squirrel.

The NMDGF also manages 36 migratory game species including waterfowl (ducks and geese) and other migratory birds including sandhill crane, coot, common moorhen, sora, Virginia rail, snipe, dove and band-tailed pigeon.

Both upland game and migratory game birds are considered Small Game.

What’s New This Year

Application Deadlines Wednesday, Oct. 3 for Special Permit Bird HuntsThe application deadlines for all Bernardo special permit sandhill crane hunts, youth waterfowl hunts, light goose spe-cial permit hunts, youth-only light goose hunt and special-permit pheasant hunts is Wednesday, Oct. 3 before 5 p.m. MDT.

Dove Banding ProgramDuring 2012, a large-scale banding program for mourning and white-winged doves continued nationwide. Harvest data obtained from the banding is used to estimate dove populations.

Individuals younger than 18 years of age must have success-fully completed a hunter education course in New Mexico

while hunting.

Youth-only HuntsTo qualify for most youth-only or youth/adult hunts, appli-cants must be younger than 18 years of age on the opening day of the hunt. Youth hunters must provide proof of suc-cessfully passing a hunter education course (see above).

The exception to the above age requirement is the federal program "Youth Waterfowl Days." Hunters must be younger than 16 years to participate in this hunt, must be

Valencia County Landowner Pheasant PermitsNo public-land pheasant hunting is allowed in Valencia County. Private landowners in Valencia county still have the ability to hunt pheasants and allow hunters on their private property. Landowners are required to provide proof of own-

Migratory Game BirdsMigratory game birds include dove, band-tailed pigeon, sandhill crane, all ducks, dark geese (Canada and white-fronted), light geese (snow, blue-phase snow and Ross’s), coot, common moorhen, sora, Virginia rail and snipe.

Migratory Game Bird Permits

bird hunters obtain a Migratory Bird Permit (HIP) Number. Residents and nonresidents must have a permit number for each state in which they hunt migratory birds.

Band-tailed Pigeon PermitsA permit is not required for band-tailed pigeon hunters.

Regular Season Sandhill Crane Permits

Free Light Goose Conservation Order Permit A free Light Goose Conservation Order Permit is required of all hunters participating in this hunt from Feb. 1 - March 10,

Storage, Transportation and ShipmentOne fully feathered wing must remain attached to all migra-tory birds, except doves and band-tailed pigeons, until the bird arrives at the hunters' home or storage facility. No person shall give, put or leave any game at any place or in the custody of another person unless the game is tagged by the hunter with the following information:

Legal Methods

Summary of Federal RegulationsIn addition to the state regulations set forth in this booklet, the fol-lowing federal regulations apply to the taking, possessing, transport-ing and storing of migratory game birds (duck, geese, coot, common moorhen, snipe, rail, dove, band-tailed pigeon and sandhill crane). Persons cited for violating federal regulations will be required to appear in federal court (Complete 50 CFR-Part 20 Federal
