WELCOME

GOOD BETTERBREAKTHROUGHSakata has a long history of creating breakthrough flower varieties. In fact, we are quite

proud that 2013 marks our Centennial year and that we will join the ranks of those few

companies in our industry that have celebrated this milestone.

What does one hundred years in business mean for our business partners? It means we have

a long history of consistently bringing breakthrough genetics to the marketplace. Earlier

breakthroughs, like our extra-large flowered pansy Majestic Giants II, the world’s first F1

hybrid pansy introduced in 1966, have become classics – and are still market leaders today,

thanks to active breeding programs designed to meet changing market demands.

This history also means we have the breeding experience and the germplasm to develop new

breakthrough products, including our latest achievements, SunPatiens® and SuperCal®.

While consumer satisfaction will always be a critical consideration, we are listening to

distributors, growers and retailers so we can deliver products, technical information and

marketing support to address production and sell-through needs. The market requires

products that are reliable, easy to program, survive well in transit and offer long shelf life at

retail. In addition to premium genetics, we recognize the demand for innovative marketing

ideas and holiday promotional programs.

Our 2012-13 introductions build on Sakata’s tradition of serving the needs of our business

partners. We look forward to bringing you more of these products in the years ahead.

Breeding breakthroughs for nearly a century.

SUNFLOWERSince Sakata first brought F1 hybrid sunflowers

to the market in 1987, we’ve focused our breeding

efforts on pollenless, uniflora varieties that perform

under short day conditions and lower temperatures.

With the introduction of Vincent® this year, we’ve

taken a major step forward in sunflower breeding.

Vincent was bred to be more day length neutral

forgreaterflexibilityinprogramming,allowing

growers to produce high quality crops early, mid

and late season.

SUNBRIGhTHelianthus annuus

SUNFLOWER • Standard, PriMax® • f1Sunbright was bred for early flowering under short day conditions and low temperatures. Therefore, they excel in autumn/winter/spring and are very usable when the days are shorter and temperatures are lower. All of Sakata’s sunflowers are of uniflora type and pollen free.

• F1 hybrid quality

• Pollenless, uniflora type

• Good for winter flowering in cooler greenhouses under short day conditions

• Bred for large flower production under low nitrogen, low light level and low temperature conditions

• Blooms 50 days from sowing under short days

• Blooms approximately 70 to 80 days from sowing under long days of summer and is related to day length and temperature

• Suitable for both indoor and outdoor production systems

• Uniform and vigorous under low temperature and short days

• Holds up extremely well in long distance shipping

• Less susceptible to botrytis at harvesting stage

SUNBRIGhT SUPREMEHelianthus annuus

SUNFLOWER • f1Like Sunbright, Sunbright Supreme is a tall cut flower variety bred for early flowering under short day conditions and low temperatures.

Compared to Sunbright, Sunbright Supreme is less sensitive to cold temperatures and flowers earlier. Flowers also have more rounded petals.

• F1 hybrid quality

• Pollenless, uniflora type

• Sunbright Supreme is a short day response variety and more responsive (quicker flowering) under short day conditions than Sunbright

• Uniform and vigorous under low temperature and short days

• Blooms approximately 50 days from sowing under short winter days

• Blooms approximately 70 days from sowing under long days of summer and is related to day length and temperature

• Strong flower stems and necks for upward-facing flower heads

• Suitable for both indoor and outdoor production systems

• Very well suited for production of dwarf-type flowers used in bouquets

• Less susceptible to botrytis at harvest stage

• Holds up extremely well in long distance shipping

Sunbright Supreme

VINCENT®Helianthus annuus

SUNFLOWER • f1This brand-new series is a major step forward in sunflower breeding. Vincent® was bred to be less sensitive to day length for greater flexibility in programming, allowing growers to produce high quality crops early, mid and late season.

Vincent’s Choice features the well-loved combination of a brown center and deep orange petals while Vincent’s Fresh has a crisp, green center, which is a clear alternative to current selections.

• An extra ring of rounded, overlapping petals for better-filled, more attractive flower heads and an increased percentage of saleable stems

• Flowers face upwards on strong stems and necks

• Pollenless flower heads stay clean all through the distribution channel

• More day length neutral for greater flexibility in programming

• Better height under short days; doesn’t get too tall under long days

• Shorter crop cycle than competitive varieties and concentrated harvest mean increased margins

• Strong seedling and plant vigor

• Also well-suited for producing dwarf-type flowers for bouquets

SUPERCaL®Known for unique colors and large flowers, SuperCal® is an ideal combination of petunia and calibrachoa traits. It is pH tolerant, day length neutral and can be grown cool. • Features large flowers in vibrant colors

• Early flowering and low temperature requirement for cost-effective production

• Strong roots minimize disease and pH problems

• Better heat tolerance than both petunia and calibrachoa

• Looks great at retail and performs extremely well in the garden through the heat of summer

• Leaves are not sticky so old blooms drop cleanly

• Excellent weather tolerance – flowers rebound quickly after rain and conditioned plants are frost tolerant to 25°F

• Ideal for baskets and mixed containers as well as beds
