The K-Vest Advantage

Player Testimonies

“I use the K-Vest system to confirm what I’m feeling. If I feel my hands are starting first then followed by my hips, K-Vest can confirm it. There’s a sensor on your wrist and one on your back which tracks the motion of the three major components of the swing; your hands and your upper and lower body rotations. The data you receive is unparalleled. The system analyzes every part of your swing, which has allowed me to fine tune my skills and become a better golfer.” – Sneh Patel

“I enjoy using the K-Vest system because it gives me a chance to see my swing and me-chanics. It puts my swing in perspective and shows me where I can improve. It’s helped improve my swing by showing me little tweaks in my alignment, posture and the turn at the top of my swing. These are three keys that I’ve been adjusting this semester and without K-Vest it wouldn’t be as easy to do on my own.” - Connie Pitenis

Embry-Riddle finished third at the NAIA National Championships, four strokes off the lead, after a remarkable 295 in the final round. They carded the lowest team round of the final day, by eight strokes, but it wasn’t enough to capture the program’s first national title.

The Eagles return four of the five athletes that participated in the team’s sixth straight top-five finish at the National Championships in Greeneville, Tenn. Hopes are high for the Eagle women, as they are hoping for a return trip to the National Championship to make another run for a title.

“The key to winning is everyone playing their best golf for one week,” said Lopez. “It takes a lot of preparation to peak and be playing well at that time, but it also takes a little luck. Last year we improved our score by 39 shots from our runner-up finish in 2011 and finished third. We have all the pieces to contend, things just need to fall into place for us.”

The PlayersThe Eagles will field an experienced squad for the 2012-13 season, with the return of three seniors. Bea Serra, Connie Pitenis and Pia Jenko are the top returners from last year’s team that fin-

ished third at the 2012 NAIA National Championships. Pitenis returns as the low stroke average from last season, finishing with a 79.2, just behind departed graduate Fabys Barreto-Guzman. Pitenis completed her junior season with two top-five, four top-10 and five top-20 finishes. She competed in every round the Blue and Gold teed off in, shooting her lowest round of the season, a 72, at the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Invitational (Oct. 3). Pitenis carded a 297 (77-72-74-74) at the National Championship to receive Honorable Mention All-American honors.

“I believe we will see more consistency from Connie this season,” said Lopez. “We will see her playing more free, with a stronger game management. I believe she’ll have a much more consistent season. She has learned to be comfortable with her game and knows how to use her skills to maximize her ability. We have yet to see her best golf.”

Serra teed off in 10 events in her junior season, averaging 79.4 strokes per round, the third best on the team. She finished a season-best second at the Bash at the Beach (Apr. 14) shooting a 76-78=158, which tied her best 36-hole total on the season. She also shot the seventh lowest round in ERAU women’s golf history with a one-under par 71 at the Lady Moc Golf Classic (Feb. 21). The Barcelona, Spain native captured two top-five and five top-20 finishes. Serra also received 2012 All-America Honorable Mention accolades and was named team MVP and shared the Lead Eagle award with Guzman.

“Bea is a very passionate player,” said Lopez. “She wants it very badly and sometimes she tries too hard. She is learning to balance that out and play her game. She’s a coachable player and tries to learn as much as she can. Bea is set up for a breakthrough season.”

Jenko competed in every event for the Eagles during her junior season, averaging 81.3 strokes per round. She shot her way into the record books with a one-under par 71 at the Lady Moc Golf Classic (Feb. 21), the seventh best mark in team history. She finished a season-best ninth at the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Invitational (Oct. 3), shooting a 54-hole total 234. The Kranj, Slovenia native finished the season with two top-10 and three top-20 finishes. She also shot a 235 in the National Championship, where she missed one round due to illness.

“Pia is a warrior,” Lopez stated. “I can’t tell you how often she has come back from a sickness or injury to perform for our team. Pia has a fighting spirit in her and she never goes away. She needs to continue to balance her fire and her skill to be the best she can be.”

Another senior that could make an impact this season is Allison Schultz. A starter on ERAU’s women’s soccer team, Schultz joined the squad in the spring of 2011 and played in three events for the Eagles. Her best round as an Eagle came at the Bash at the Beach on Apr. 10 when she shot 83 and finished tied for 57th out of 68 competitors.

“Allison is such an asset to this team,” Lopez claimed. “She’s a great teammate, brings a great attitude and work ethic and helps enhance the atmo-sphere on our squad.”

Heather Wiquist enters the season as the lone junior for the Eagles after finishing last season with an 82.3 season stroke average. Wiquist had her best finish at the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Invitational (Oct. 3) placing eighth with a 54-hole total of 233. The Bluffton, S.C. native saved her best round for last, shooting a season-low 76 in the first round of the Sun Conference Championship (Apr. 21) and the final round of the NAIA National Championships (May 18). She finished the season with one top-10 and three top-20 finishes.

“Heather is our quiet leader,” Lopez said. “She has a depth of wisdom and drive that can be a stabilizing factor within our lineup and on the team. If she can continue to play her game, she can be the number one player on a given day.”

Sophomores Sophie Olley and Charlotte Orren each look to have an impact on the 2012-13 season. Orren enters her second year with the Eagles after teeing off in four events as a freshman, finishing with an 89.7 shots per round average. The San Diego, Calif. native fired a season low 82 in the final round of the Bash at the Beach (Apr. 15).

“Charlotte is another emotional and spiritual leader for our team,” Lopez observed. “She is a member of the President’s Team and is the ultimate teammate. She is always looking out for everyone on the team and is one of our hardest workers. She just needs time to develop and continue to strengthen her game.”

Sophie Olley begins her career with the Blue and Gold after competing for Murray State as a freshman. As a Racer, the Leeds, England native averaged 83 strokes per round, including a season-best 75 at Drake Creek. She was also voted to the Ohio Valley Conference Newcomer’s team.

“Sophie has absolutely no fear,” Lopez said. “She isn’t afraid of making a mistake and isn’t afraid of a bad score and that is rare. In my 18 years of coaching and 30-plus years of competitive golf, I haven’t seen that very often. It’s fun, refreshing and something that has been motivating for her teammates too.”

MacKenzie Cunningham is the only freshman on the Eagles team this season. Cunningham is a 2012 graduate of University High School in Carmel, Ind. where she was named Academic All-State Honorable Mention while also playing basketball and lacrosse. She won team MVP honors, placed fourth at sectionals in 2011 and made three consecutive regional appearances.

“MacKenzie is a gamer,” said Lopez. “She’s a competitor. She was a multi-sport standout and she brings that mentality to the golf course. I’ve never had such a team that is so feisty and hungry to compete. MacKenzie brings that to our team and provides great depth. We are going to strengthen her game, but she has no quit in her and she is never disappointed when she is competing.”

The ScheduleLopez and the Eagle women will compete in nine regular season tournaments in during their 2012-13 campaign. The Blue and Gold will tee off its fall season

on Sept. 22 at LPGA International for the Daytona State Falcon Invitational. The women will compete in three other tournaments, facing Division II and Division I competition, with the fall slate coming to an end on Oct. 30 at the UAB Fall Invite at the Peninsula Club in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The Eagles will begin play in the spring on Jan. 10, 2013 when the majority of the team will play in the Women’s South Atlantic Amateur Championship (SALLY) at Oceanside Country Club in Ormond Beach, Fla. The historic event dates back to 1926 and fields contestants from all over the world. The Eagles begin their spring championship season at the Flagler’s World Golf Hall of Fame Invitational held at World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Fla. on Feb. 17. After a few days off, the women travel to Lakeland, Fla. to take part in the Lady Moc Golf Classic at Eagle Brooke on Feb. 24.

Embry-Riddle will host the Eagle Invitational and the Bash at the Beach in Daytona Beach at LPGA International on Mar. 17 and Apr. 5 respectively. In between those events the women will travel to Crystal River, Fla. where they will compete in the Cincin-nati Spring Invitational at the Plantation Inn and Resort. The Invite is a premier Division I event, which the Eagles will compete in for the first time.

The Eagles will look to return to the top of the conference at the Sun Conference Championships April 21-23. The two-day, 36-hole event is being co-hosted by SCAD Savannah and South Carolina-Beaufort in Savannah, Ga. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the 2013 NAIA National Championship in Lincoln, Neb., May 21-24.

“We have several 54-hole events, which we play in the spring as this helps to build our endurance and mental toughness, which is integral to our success at the National Tournament. We also play against the best-of-the-best at the Division II level every week, which helps to simulate competing for a National Championship. We play tough courses and conditions that should give us a leg up when we get to Nebraska in May.”

The 2012-13 season marks the third for Embry-Riddle men’s golf Head Coach Ken Staton and the program’s 25th year of competition. Staton, who is entering his fifth year with the Eagle golf program, took over the men’s head coaching job from women’s Head Coach Maria Lopez in 2010-11 after assisting her with both the teams from 2008-2010. The Eagles continued their success under Staton, finding their way into the record books again. For the second consecutive year Staton’s team posted the lowest season stroke average in program history with a 302.2 and grabbed the program’s first tournament title since 2004.

After a slow start and strong finish in 2011-12, the Eagles are eager to make their mark in the Sun Conference and NAIA this season. The men return six letterwinners and add three newcomers that are expected to make an immediate impact. Jackson Koert is the main departure for the Eagles, as the programs first and only All-American, Koert graduates with the top-three season stroke averages, the lowest single round (66) and holds five of the 12 lowest 54-hole scores. While he leaves a big spot to fill, the depth and understanding of the game the team has shown should help the Eagles throughout the 2012-13 season.

“Jackson was a tremendous player,” said Staton. “But I believe in the group of young men we have this season and we are hungry for success!”

The PlayersThree senior co-captains lead the Eagles: Kevin O’Leary, Kris Karlsson and Willy Wilner. O’Leary teed off in five events for the Eagles last

season and finished with a stroke average of 80. The highest finish of his junior season was 12th (76-83-77=236) in the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Invitational on Oct. 3.

“Kevin has come in this season with a new confidence and swagger,” said Staton. “He will be a huge factor in the success of this team.”Karlsson competed in all 10 of the Eagles’ competitions as a junior, placing a career-best fifth at the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Invitational with a

223 (71-76-76). He recorded three top-25 finishes and his 76.7 stroke average was good enough for third best on the team. “Kristofer has become a better player each year,” said Staton. “He has improved all aspects of his game. He is also one of the team leaders

in the classroom and I see him having a career year this season.”Wilner enjoyed a successful junior season as an Eagle in 2011-12. He competed in seven events and collected four top-25 finishes. His

76.8 stroke average was good enough for fourth-best on the team. He also shot a 36-hole career-best 145 (71-74) at the Johnson & Wales Fall Major on Nov. 1.

“Willy has worked hard on his game,” said Staton. “Now he is seeing that work pay off. I see him shooting multiple sub-par rounds as a senior.”

Sneh Patel enters the 2012-13 season as the lone junior for the Blue and Gold after competing in nine events in his sophomore campaign. The Limbe, Malawi native placed in the top 25 four times. He shot a career-best 69 in the first round of the Eagle Invitational on Mar. 20, en route to a career-high fifth-place finish.

“Sneh is what Embry-Riddle defines as the total package; student, person and player,” said Staton. “He’s a Resident Assistant, participates in student affairs, is an outstanding student and contributes to our team on the course.”

This year’s sophomores, Jonathan Kopsell and Henrik Petersson, will be asked to be the anchors for the 2012-13 Eagles. Kopsell is coming off an impressive freshman campaign that saw the Land O’Lakes, Fla. native record the fourth lowest individual season stroke average (74.7)

behind only the departed Koert. Kopsell teed off in all 10 events as a freshman, tallying seven top-25 finishes, four within the top 10. He shot a career-best 215 (71-72-72) at the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Invitational on Oct. 3, finishing fourth.

“Jon has done an excellent job on and off the course,” Staton said. “He is one of our top three players and has the potential to be an All-American.”

Petersson, a Stockholm, Sweden native, finished his first collegiate season with a 76.5 scoring average, third-best on the team. He placed in the top 25 twice, with his best finish coming in the Sun Conference Championship on May 1 where he shot a 228 (74-80-74), placing a team-high 12th.

“Henrik has become comfortable with his new surroundings in the United States and his game is showing it,” said Staton. “He is going to be consistent for us the rest of his career.”

Kyle Morgan, Alejandro Lozano and Thomas Garnier join the Eagles squad as freshmen in 2012-13. Morgan is a 2012 graduate of Mer-ritt Island Christian in Merritt Island, Fla. During his four-year career, Morgan placed fifth at districts and regionals in 2011, averaged 37 strokes per nine holes in 2012 and received All-Conference honors in 2008-09.

Lozano is a 2012 graduate of Colegio San Carlos in Bogota, Colombia. He is a multi-talented athlete, who posted a 36-hole best 138 in June 2011 and led his high school volleyball and basketball teams to UNCOLI Championships.

Garnier is a 2012 graduate of IMG Pendleton School in Sainte-Anne, Guadeloupe. He fired a career-best 76 in 2011 and improved three strokes in 2012. As a senior he was named an All-Conference Honorable Mention selection.

The ScheduleStaton and the Eagles will compete in nine regular season tournaments during their 2012-13 campaign. The Blue and Gold begin the

fall season in Lake Wales, Fla. at the Webber Invitational, which is being held at Lake Wales Country Club on Sept. 23. The Eagles compete the next week in the Thomas Invitational at the Kinderlou Country Club in Valdosta, Ga. before closing out the fall season at the Mission Inn Fall Intercollegiate at El Campeon in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. on Oct. 20.

The spring season begins on Feb. 2, 2013 when the Eagles travel to Cocoa Beach, Fla. to compete in the Titan Invitational held at Sun-tree Country Club. ERAU remains on the road, playing in the Start-2-Finish Classic on Feb. 16 in Lake Wales, Fla. and the Shark Invitational in Okatie, S.C. on Mar. 10, which will serve as The Sun Conference Spring Major.

The Eagles will then return to Daytona Beach, looking to defend their tournament title, as they host the Eagle Invitational on Mar. 17 at LPGA International’s Legends course. The Blue and Gold concludes the regular season with tournaments in consecutive weeks, with the

Bash at the Beach at LPGA International on Apr. 5 and the Conference Major at Warner in Sebring, Fla. on Apr. 14.

Embry-Riddle will look to bring home the programs’ first Sun Conference Championship since 1997 on Apr. 28 when they travel to the two-day, 54-hole event played at Mystic Dunes, in Orlando, Fla. The winner receives an automatic bid to the 2013 NAIA National Championship in Salem, Ore., May 14-17.

Under the tutelage of Staton, the Eagles have made remarkable strides, but Staton would like his squad to take those next steps in its competitive progres-sion.

“This team has a perfect mix of mature players and young talent,” stated Sta-ton. “Everyone is moving forward and improving to become the total package. All of the student-athletes know they can get better and are continually push-ing themselves to improve and be competitive in The Sun Conference and the NAIA.”

Maria Lopez

Women’s Head Coach

Season: 13th

Hometown: Daytona Beach, Fla.

College: Alabama - 1993

The Embry-Riddle women’s golf team has a great source of golf knowledge leading them through the season thanks to Head Coach Maria Lopez’s experiences, as both a collegiate golfer and touring professional.

Lopez pioneered the women’s golf program at ERAU in 2000 and is in her 13th season of coaching the Eagle women. During her tenure, the Embry-Riddle women’s golf team has accrued seven regional championships, 19 tournament titles and has earned 11 national championship appearances in a row. As individuals, there have been four regional medalists, 17 individual titles, 13 All-Americans, 22 honorable mention All-Americans, 15 National Championship All-Tournament team members, 38 All-Sun Conference team members, 25 All-Region XIV team members, six Conference/Region Players of the Year, 16 Academic All-Americans and 17 Academic All-Conference recipients. The women’s golf squad was the inaugural NAIA Buffalo Funds Champions of Character Team in 2006 and recognized as an NAIA Scholar Team four times.

In 2003, Lopez assumed the head coach position of the men’s golf program. From 2003-10 Lopez coached the men’s team to four team titles, two National Championship appearances, a conference championship runner-up team finish and 12 top-three finishes. In addition Lopez’s student-athletes garnered individual honors, includ-ing three individual titles, one All-America honor, one Sun-Conference Player of the Year, four All-Sun Conference team members, two All-Region XIV team members, one Region XIV A.O. Duer Award Winner, 13 Academic All-Americans and 12 Academic All-Conference recipients. The men’s golf squad was also recognized as an NAIA Scholar Team in 2010.

Lopez’s teams have not just proven themselves on the field of play, but also in the classroom. During her coaching tenure, the men’s and women’s golf teams have placed at least one player on the Conference All-Academic list every year. In 2009, the women’s golf team posted a 3.7 GPA, the highest of ERAU’s 16 athletics programs for the third year in a row. Lopez also served as the director of the Embry-Riddle Braddock Education Success Team (BEST Program) from 2001-05, overseeing and implementing the department’s academic en-hancement program.

Lopez was named the 2007 Coach of the Year by the The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Teaching and Club Professional (T&CP), marking the first time a coach from a NAIA institution has been given the award. The LPGA Coach of the Year Award, presented by Etonic, was established in 1980, and is awarded annually to a female golf professional actively engaged in teaching and/or coaching golf at the collegiate or high school level.

In 2010-11, Lopez led the women’s golf team to a second-place finish at the NAIA National Tournament in one of the most exciting finishes in NAIA history, tying the 2007-08 team for the best finish for any Embry-Riddle golf team on the national stage. The 2007-08 team’s 3.7 GPA was also the second highest of any athletic team in the entire NAIA.

Lopez has also been very active in the NAIA at the national, regional and conference levels. She recently com-pleted her last term as President of the NAIA Women’s Golf Coaches Association and now serves as the women’s golf rater for The Sun Conference. Lopez has also held positions as the regional women’s golf rater and the men’s and women’s regional golf chair.

A three-year letter winner at Alabama, Lopez competed for the Crimson Tide from 1989-92. During her tenure at Tuscaloosa, Lopez also won a U.S. Amateur sectional qualifier, earning her the right to participate in the 1992 US Women’s Amateur. After graduation, Lopez made the jump to the professional ranks, beginning with the Futures Tour in 1993. During that time, she also competed on the Asian (1994, 1997), European and Australian Tours (1994). In 1998, she retired from full time competition after a long battle with injuries. Lopez returned to competitive golf in 2000 and occasionally competes in various professional events in order to maintain and sharpen her skills as a player and instructor.

Since 1994, Lopez has caddied numerous LPGA and Futures Tour events. Her experience as a player and keen eye for instruction makes caddying and coaching a natural fit. Lopez has coached professional players to five LPGA Tour memberships, appearances in five US Women’s Open Championships, three Nabisco Championships, two Canadian Opens, one Women’s British Open and one USGA Public Links Championship. Throughout the year, Lopez will work with tour players, and on occasion, they play with her teams during the off-season. Tracy Hanson, Jamie Hullett, Katherine Hull and Kristen Samp have been great friends and mentors to the program.

The product of a true “American Dream” story, Lopez is the youngest child of Cuban immigrants Julian and Dora Lopez. Younger sister to Julian Jr. and Nancy, her golf roots may have been predictable as she competed in her first golf tournament with them at the age of three. Lopez credits her family, especially her grandmother Margie and sister Nancy, as the inspira-tion to make a difference in young peoples’ lives.

Lopez is currently a Class A member of the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional Division and a certified Henry-Griffitts golf club fitter. She serves as a National Educator and Mentor to apprentice members. During the school year, Lopez serves as a guest instructor on campus for Introduction to Health and Fitness, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and various Hispanic and female awareness initiatives.

Lopez currently resides in Ormond Beach. She was a Dean’s List student at Alabama and graduated in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in nutrition/hospitality management and completed her master’s degree in Human Factors Psychology and Systems Engineering at Embry-Riddle.

Ken StatonIn the summer of 2010, Embry-Riddle Director of Athletics Steve Ridder announced the hiring of Ken Staton as the head coach of the men’s golf program. Staton assumed the role of

head coach after working with Maria Lopez as the assistant coach to both the men’s and women’s programs for two seasons and is entering his third season at the helm of the men’s team in 2012-13.

“We are very excited to have Coach Staton on as a full time coach,” Ridder said. “He has an impressive resume with his overall experiences as a collegiate golfer at the NCAA Division I level and as a player on the PGA tour. Beyond that, I’ve had the opportunity to observe him as an assistant coach over the last two years and what has impressed me even more than his credentials, is that he understands the coaching profession and the opportunity to impact the lives of young people. In addition to his outstanding teaching ability and his knowledge of the sport, he has established a great rapport with the student-athletes and I know they are excited to have him on board full time.”

Staton had a successful first year as head coach of the men’s program in 2010-11. Individually, Jackson Koert became the first All-American under Staton’s leadership, earning third team honors for the second consecutive year. Staton’s team also made a mark in the record books as the Eagle men garnered the lowest team season stroke average in Embry-Riddle history with a 303.3, besting the 2006-07 team’s average of 303.4. Staton’s team also tied the 2006-07 team’s lowest single round of 278 (-4) and tied the 2004-05 and 2009-10 teams for the sixth lowest single round in ERAU history at 286 (-2). Additionally, the 2010-11 team earned three spots in the top 10 for the lowest 54-hole score in a tournament. The team’s 294-278-307=879 at the Camp LeJeune Gold Championship tied for second, while the team’s 297-286-299=882 at the Southeastern Fire Classic and 297-302-296=895 at The Sun Conference Championship put him in fourth and tied for sixth respectively.

In his second season at the helm, Staton led the Blue and Gold to their first tournament win in eight years, taking the Eagle Invitational by six strokes with an 895 (289-304-302) which ties for the eighth lowest 54-hole score in team history. Staton’s team again made a mark in the record books, as the Eagle men garnered the lowest team season stroke average in Embry-Riddle history with a 302.2, besting the 2010-11 team’s average of 303.3. The Blue and Gold also tied with the 2004-05 and 2010-11 teams for the sixth lowest single round in ERAU history at 286 (-2) as well as the 10th best single round with

a 287 (-1). Additionally, the 2011-12 team earned the

seventh best 36-hole score shooting a 299-297=595 (+35) at the JWU Wildcat Invitational. The Eagle men also grabbed four spots in the top 10 for the lowest 54-hole score in a tournament. The team’s 302-286-300=888 at the Gary Freeman Bethune-Cookman Spring Invitational ranks fourth, while the team’s 287-304-301=892 at the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Invitational and 300-301-292=893 at the Bash at the Beach ties them for fifth and sixth respectively.

A native of Daytona Beach, Staton has a wealth of experience, as he has had great success as a junior-amateur competitor, a collegiate athlete and as a member of several professional tours. Staton played on the PGA Tour from 2002-03, where he garnered two top-five finishes. He was a member of the Nationwide Tour in 1999, 2004, 2005 and 2007 and earned four top 20 finishes during that tenure. Staton was a six-time champion on the Canadian Tour from 1998-01, winning the BC Tel Open, MCTV Benefit Partners Classic, MTS Classic, AMEX SAQ Championship, Telus Open and the Tour Championship Niagara Falls. As a member of the Mini Tours (1995-98), he was a four-time winner of the Tommy Armour and two-time champion of the Riviera Open. Staton also placed second on the 2006 Hooter’s Tour.

Staton was a four-year letterwinner at Florida State and graduated in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in Marketing. He was an All-American and team captain in his senior year and led the Seminoles to a seventh place finish at the NCAA DI Champion-ship in 1995, where he placed 14th overall. During the 1994 regular season at FSU, Staton won the Rattler Invitational and the Riviera Open and went on to finish 32nd at the NCAA DI Championship. He was also named a Savane College All-American for the 1994 season.

As a junior-amateur competitor, he finished first at the 1994 Volusia Amateur Championship and second in the 1993 North Florida Amateur. In 1990, he won the AJGA Midwestern Junior and placed second at the AJGA Rolex Tournament of Champions.

Staton also worked as golf instructor and rules official for the Volusia/Flagler Junior Golf Association from 1990-96 and was an assistant golf instructor for Riviera Junior Clinics in 1995. Before officially joining the Embry-Riddle coaching staff, Staton helped the Eagles during winter months and has coached several former Embry-Riddle golfers, most notably Deah Reubel.

Staton resides in Ormond Beach with his wife, Jennifer.

The Sun Conference, formerly the Florida Sun Conference, is heading into its 22nd sea-son of competition and continues to be one of the most successful intercollegiate athletic conferences in the National Association of In-tercollegiate Athletics.

Under the guidance of Commissioner Mark Pope (2011-present), the league sponsors championships in baseball, men’s and wom-en’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and field, and women’s volleyball.

Sun Conference teams are perennial con-tenders for national titles. In 2011-12, 31 teams made national tournament appear-ances. The Northwood men’s basketball team, the SCAD Savannah women’s golf team and Embry-Riddle’s women’s tennis team each finished as runner-up in their respective na-tional tournaments. Additionally, the league racked up numerous individual national titles as Embry-Riddle’s Chris Freeman and Patrick Besch and Adrian Bayh won the ITA/NAIA Na-tional singles and doubles titles respectively, while the Eagles’ Reta Woodard, Nicole Bonk and Crystal Bardge won national titles in track and field.

Individually speaking, student-athletes from The Sun Conference have proven themselves worthy of national recognition year after year. In 2010-11 alone, 68 student-athletes from the league were named NAIA All-Americans, while 96 TSC athletes were also named Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athletes.

The roots of The Sun Conference date back to 1990 when the league was originally formed as the Florida Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Original membership consisted of Embry-Riddle, Flagler, Florida Memorial, Nova (now Nova Southeastern), Palm Beach Atlantic, St. Thomas, Webber International and Warner Southern.

The name “Florida Sun Conference” was ad-opted in 1992. The league grew to nine mem-bers with the addition of Northwood in 1994. Between 2002 and 2006, Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic and Flagler moved to NCAA II, but the league was able to recruit new members as Savannah College of Art and De-sign joined in 2004 followed by Edward Waters in 2006. With the addition of the University of South Carolina at Beaufort, Johnson & Wales, Southeastern, Ave Maria and Thomas (Ga.), along with Edward Waters’ move to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, the league mem-bership now stands at 12 schools.

The Embry-Riddle women’s golf team put together another great season in 2011-12. The Eagles finished third at the National Championships, carding a program record 1215 in the four-day, 72-hole event, including the second lowest round ever by an Eagle team with a 295 in the fourth round. The women also finished with the second lowest season stroke average (315.4), behind only the 2009-10 team that finished with a 313.3 average.

THE FALLThe Blue and Gold competed in four events during the fall, beginning with a fourth-place finish at the Daytona State Lady Falcon Invitational (Sept. 25). The Eagles shot 637 (314-323)

as three golfers garnered top-15 finishes by concluding play with a 157. Heather Wiquist and Fabys Barreto-Guzman had a 79 and 78 on alternating days, while Bea Serra had the low round of 76 and shot 81 on day two.

The Eagles followed that with their first win of the season at the Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) Invitational (Oct. 3) at the Talking Rock Golf Club. Connie Pitenis and Bea Serra finished in the top five as Pitennis shot a 225 (72-74-79) for third place and Serra carded at 227 (73-77-77) for fourth.

Embry-Riddle concluded its fall season finishing 10th and 13th at the Nova Southeastern Shark Invitational (Oct. 12) and the Flagler Fall Slam (Oct. 25), respectively. Serra paced the women at NSU with a 36-hole total of 154 (76-78) for 12th place.

THE SPRINGThe Eagles garnered their fourth top ten finish of the season in their spring opener at the Lady Moc Golf Classic (Feb. 21). The 54-hole tournament was

held at The Club at Eaglebrooke in Lakeland, Fla. where the women shot 948 (310-326-312). Head Coach Maria Lopez and her squad came back to Daytona Beach to host the 23rd Annual Eagle Invitational (Mar. 20) where the Eagles took third

place with a 631 (320-311). Barreto-Guzman paced the Blue and Gold with a five-over par 149 (77-72), good enough to earn a share of second place. Embry-Riddle carded a 54-hole total of 973 (315-327-331) and placed 17th out of 19 teams at the Cincinnati Spring Invite at Plantation Golf Resort and

Spa. The women bounced back to earn their fourth top five finish of the season, placing second in the Bash at the Beach (Apr. 15) at the LPGA International

Golf Club. The Eagles placed four golfers in the top 10 and finished with a 36-hole total of 627. Pitenis and Guzman tied for seventh with a 157.

The PostseasonPostseason play began at The Sun Conference Championship on Apr. 20 at LPGA International Golf Club in Daytona

Beach. The Eagle women finished third with a 628 (316-312) in the two-day tournament and Barreto-Guzman, Pitenis and Serra received All-Conference honors.

ERAU earned an at-large berth into the NAIA National Championship by being ranked fifth in the final NAIA Women’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. The trip was the Eagles’ 11th consecutive to the national tournament. A year after falling to even-tual NAIA National Champion California Baptist in a playoff, the Eagles placed third at the NAIA National Championship.

The women entered round three in fifth place, but fired the lowest team round of the day (295) and moved into the third spot. The fifth-ranked Eagles finished with a four-day, 72-hole total of 1215 (308-304-308-295).

Pitenis fired a one-over par 74 on the final day and finished with a score of 297 (77-72-74-74). Pitenis garnered a top-five finish in the 144-player tournament and earned All-Tournament Team honors. Barreto-Guzman also received All-Tournament Team honors for the second consecutive season shooting a three-under par 70 in the final round to post a 298 (78-78-72-70) to tie for fifth.

Barreto-Guzman, Pitenis and Serra all received All-American honors from the NAIA, with Barreto-Guzman being selected to the first team for the second straight season, while Pitenis and Serra garnered Honorable Mention accolades.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is the world’s oldest, largest and most presti-gious university specializing in aviation and aerospace. The curriculum covers the opera-tion, engineering and research of modern aircraft, alternative vehicles and clean energy systems and the management of aviation and aerospace organizations.

Approximately 34,000 students pursue degrees from among 40 degree programs at residential campuses in Daytona Beach, Fla., and Prescott, Ariz., and at more than 150 education centers for working professionals in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Embry-Riddle also offers online coursework.

Embry-Riddle’s worldwide reputation for academic excellence draws students from all 50 states and nearly 90 nations.

The 185-acre Daytona Beach campus, located next to Daytona Beach International Airport, has 4,600 undergraduate and 610 graduate students. Excellent flying weather and the resort communities surrounding the Daytona Beach campus offer students an outstanding environment in which to study, fly and enjoy numerous recreational and cul-tural activities. The campus is within an hour’s drive of the Kennedy Space Center and the Space Coast and within easy reach of Orlando and Jacksonville, which offer a menu of arts, culture, theme parks, shopping and professional sports.

HistoryOn Dec. 17, 1925, 22 years after the historic flight of the Wright Flyer, barnstormer

John Paul Riddle and entrepreneur T. Higbee Embry founded the Embry-Riddle Com-pany at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati, Ohio. The following spring the company opened the Embry-Riddle School of Aviation.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University began with a simple plan to train airplane pilots in a thorough, efficient manner and to cash in on a booming post-World War I interest in flying. Today, Embry-Riddle leads the world in aviation and aerospace higher education.

After a period of decline in the 1930s, Embry-Riddle sprang to life again in Miami, Fla., as World War II erupted in Europe and the demand for aviators and mechanics surged. Allied nations sent more than 25,000 young men to Embry-Riddle’s Florida centers to become pilots and aviation technicians. During the Korean War the U.S. Air Force contracted with Embry-Riddle to train airmen in the fundamentals of airplane maintenance.

In the following decades, Embry-Riddle expanded its international outreach and strengthened its academic programs. In 1965, Embry-Riddle consolidated its flight training, ground school and technical training programs into one location. With dol-lars and trucks borrowed from civic leaders, the move to Daytona Beach signaled

the rebirth of Embry-Riddle as an accredited university and the start of its odyssey to world-class status.

AcademicsEmbry-Riddle is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Asso-

ciation of Colleges and Schools to award degrees at the associate, bachelor and master levels.

At many public universities, freshmen and sophomores are taught by graduate as-sistants, but not so at Embry-Riddle. Classes, which average 25 students, are taught by faculty who are accessible to students in class, during office hours and through university-wide voice mail and e-mail.

HousingEmbry-Riddle’s on-campus housing is an integral part of the university experience.

It gives students the opportunity to develop lifelong friendships and to appreciate the unique values that everyone brings to this diverse institution.

THIS IS DAYTONA BEACH

DAYTONA BEACH

DAYTONA BEACH - HOME OF THE EAGLES

Daytona Beach is an ever-changing city of more than 61,000 residents. Located on the “Fun Coast” of Florida, the principal city of Volusia County, it has become one of the premier des-tination spots in the Southeast Region. Despite its continuous growth, it has maintained the spirit and serenity of a small, close-knit beach community.

The city is a year-round family-friendly resort area, which hosts large groups of out-of-towners that descend upon the city for various events, most notably Speedweeks in early February, Bike Week in early March, Biketoberfest in October and Spring Break throughout March.

Home to four colleges and universities, Daytona Beach boasts an excellent quality of life and is a city that thrives and cel-ebrates the diversity of its community.

Located less than an hour from Orlando and an hour and a half from Jacksonville, Daytona Beach residents have ample opportunity to experience both cities’ entertainment options, including Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios, the Orlando Magic and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Daytona Beach continually exhibits its love for sports by host-ing numerous local and national athletic events at the Ocean Center and Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Daytona Beach boasts three major sports franchises in NASCAR, the LPGA and the USTA. The Daytona Inter-national Speedway is one of the most recognizable race-tracks in the world and features the Daytona 500, Coke Zero 400 and numerous other auto racing events. The LPGA and USTA Florida both claim Daytona Beach as their organizational headquarters.

The beaches of Daytona rank sixth for beach destina-tions in the United States. Every year, millions of vaca-tioners fl ock to the Atlantic Ocean and Daytona Beach to experience the sandy beaches in Volusia County. The hard packed sand allows motorized vehicles to drive right onto the beach.

Daytona Beach is located a short, 55-mile drive away from the Vacation Capital of the World: Orlando, Florida. Orlando is home to Walt Disney World, Sea World and Universal Studios, as well as the NBA’s Orlando Magic. Daytona Beach is also just 91 miles from Jacksonville, the 11th-largest city in the United States.

The average yearly temperature in Daytona Beach is 70.4º F (21.3º C), making for a warm and pleasant cli-mate in which to live. Winters are mild and summers are warm thanks to its location on the Atlantic Ocean and the Halifax River, an estuary which fl ows between the beach-side and the mainland.

Daytona Beach boasts more than 200 restaurants, in-cluding barbecue, Mexican, Oriental, Greek, Indian, Ital-ian, Thai, seafood, Cuban, health and natural foods.

Steve Ridder has been at the helm of the Embry-Riddle athletic program since the 1993-94 sea-son, overseeing major changes in the department. During his tenure, Ridder has positioned Embry-Riddle among the elite athletic programs in the nation. The University has in-creased its number of varsity sports offered from five in 1994, to its current level of 17, and the athletic

department staff has grown from five full-time staff members in 1993 to 41 today.

The 2009-10 season marked one of the most suc-cessful campaigns in Embry-Riddle Athletics history. ERAU Athletics has consistently been one of the best programs in The Sun Conference and in the NAIA and 2009-10 was no different as the Eagles captured con-ference regular season titles in 12 of their 13 sports programs and competed in 13 national tournament events. In 2010-11, the Eagles’ collective successes on the national stage resulted in a program-best second place finish in the NAIA Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings and their unprecedented dominance in league competition afforded the Blue and Gold its 12th consecutive Sun Conference Commissioner’s Cup title.

2011-12 proved to be another banner year for the Embry-Riddle athletic program with the Eagles captur-ing their 13th straigh Sun Conference Commisioner’s Cup, finishing third in the NAIA Learfield Sports Direc-tors’ Cup race and sending 11 teams to their respective national tournaments.

Aside from the Blue and Gold’s success on the playing field, Ridder may be most proud of what the student-athletes have been able to achieve in the classroom during his tenure. The entire athletic program combined for a 3.043 grade point average last year, which is higher than the general stu-dent body at Embry-Riddle for the 12th-straight year. In addi-tion, more than 250 student-athletes have garnered Academic All-Conference accolades, over 100 have been recognized as

Daktronics/NAIA Scholar-Athletes and over 10 have received the prestigious CoSIDA Academic All-America award.

Ridder has also received personal honors for leading the ERAU athletic program. He received the highest NAIA honor of Athletics Director of the Year for 2005-06 and was recognized at the 66th Annual NAIA Convention held in Kansas City, Mis-souri. He has also been named the NACDA-NAIA Southeast Region Athletic Director of the Year three times, with the most recent honor being bestowed in June 2007, and has been hon-ored as “Athletic Administrator of the Year” by The Sun Con-ference on eight occasions (1994, 1998, 1999, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011).

The awards he has received are synonymous with Ridder’s

character and passion for Eagle Athletics. They recognize the efforts of athletic directors at all levels for their commitment and positive contributions to campuses and their surrounding communities.

Ridder has developed, designed and overseen many im-provements, which have fostered the success of athletics at Embry-Riddle. Among those enhancements are the addition of

the Sports Information Office and the start of women’s athletics with volleyball in 1995. In 1998, he oversaw the implementa-tion of women’s soccer and in 1999 women’s tennis was estab-lished, while women’s golf, men’s cross country and women’s cross country followed in 2000. Varsity sport opportunities were increased to 16 with the addition of men’s and women’s track in 2004-05 and will move to 17 when softball begins com-petition in 2012-12.

Ridder believes in giving his coaches and staff top-level fa-cilities to achieve success and he has certainly worked hard to make Embry-Riddle’s facilities among the best in the nation, primarily through his successful campaigning. Under his watch-ful eye, Eagle Athletics has gone from playing and practicing

at various venues in the local community to finding a home on campus with state-of-the-art facilities, which include the ICI Center for volleyball and basketball, the Embry-Riddle Soccer Stadium, the Ambassador E. William Crotty Tennis Complex, the Sliwa Stadium for baseball, and the Embry-Riddle Track & Field Complex.

Ridder’s guidance and leadership has attracted tre-mendous respect within the NAIA and this admiration has allowed Embry-Riddle to host eight national cham-pionships including men’s and women’s golf and men’s and women’s soccer.

Ridder is in his 22nd year as head basketball coach for Embry-Riddle and has led the Eagles to the NAIA National Tournament 11 times, with eight Sun Confer-ence regular-season championships, as well as eight conference tournament titles. In 2000, Ridder’s squad captured the school’s first national championship. His squads are regularly ranked among the top 20 nation-ally, holding the number one ranking during the entire 2000-01 season, and have produced 28 All-Americans

and nine All-America Scholar Athletes.Ridder earned his master’s degree in Physical Education/

Sports Administration from Eastern Kentucky University and his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Berea College.

Ridder and his wife, Vicky, have four children: Ryan, Rachel, Rob and Reed. The Ridder family resides in Ormond Beach.

Born and raised in Kensington, Maryland, John Phillips came to Daytona Beach in 1989, enrolling as a student at Embry-Riddle. Phillips played baseball for the Eagles for three seasons, while completing both his undergraduate (B.S., 1990) and graduate degrees (M.S., 1992).

In 1997, Phillips returned to Embry-Riddle as the University’s first-ever Director of Sports Marketing and Promotions. In his current role as Associate Director of Athletics, Phillips supervises the day-to-day functions of the athletic department, including facilities, game manage-ment, sports information, sports medicine and sports marketing for the Daytona Beach campus.

Over the last 15 years, the University has experienced phenomenal growth and success in the athletic department. During this time period, Embry-Riddle has built new facilities for baseball, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field and increased the number of sports spon-sored from six in 1997, to their present total of 17. In addition, the University has captured the Sun Conference Commissioner’s Cup for overall athletic excellence in each of the last 13 years. Embry-Riddle’s success on the field has also carried over to the classroom, where the student-athlete GPA has been higher than the overall student body every semester since 1999.

During his tenure at Embry-Riddle, Phillips has served as the tournament director for nine NAIA national championships that Embry-Riddle has hosted, including five for golf and four national soc-cer tournaments. In 2008, the NAIA honored him with the Charles Morris Award as the NAIA’s National Athletic Administrator of the Year.

Under his direction, the Embry-Riddle sports marketing and promotions staff has earned 13 NACMA “Best of” awards, including seven gold medals for things such as “best student promotion” and “best targeted group promotion.” In 2010, Phillips was named to the Board of the Directors of

NACMA, becoming just the second member of an NAIA institution to serve in this capacity. In addi-tion, Phillips serves as Chair of the NAIA-NACMA Advisory Board and has been a featured speaker on topics related to sports marketing at the NAIA convention on seven different occasions. At the 2009 NACMA Convention in Orlando, Phillips was invited to present on “Big Time Promotions on a Small-Time Budget” and two separate presentations on Social Networking, “Are you Connected” and “Avoiding the Pitfalls.”

The sports information staff at Embry-Riddle has also garnered national attention during his tenure, capturing over 40 CoSIDA awards for Excellence in Publications and his staff has been honored on five occasions with the NAIA’s Gary Spitler Award for the best overall sports publica-tions in the NAIA.

In addition to his duties at Embry-Riddle, Phillips has become one of Central Florida’s most ac-complished sports broadcasters. He has served as the voice of Embry-Riddle basketball for the last 15 seasons and has served in a similar capacity for the Eagles baseball team since 1999. In addition to his work for ERAU, he has worked as the public address announcer for both the Daytona Cubs and DeLand High School football. In his current position with WNDB-1150 AM, he anchors their motorsports coverage for events such as the Rolex 24, the Daytona 500 and the Coke Zero 400. In addition, he serves as the play-by-play announcer for WNDB’s coverage of local high school football and anchors their weekly Coaches Corner pre-game show. Phillips has also worked for radio stations WSBB (New Smyrna Beach), WNDA (DeLand) and WELE (Ormond Beach). He has also done broadcast work for Bethune-Cookman University, Georgia Southern University, Lewis-Clark State College, MidAmerica Nazarene University, The Sun Conference and also the Florida State League Daytona Cubs.

Phillips and his wife Ann, who serves as an assistant Attorney General for the State of Florida, are parents of 11-year-old twins – Lauren and Zachary and nine-year-old daughter Rachel.

Recognizing student-athletes who maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout the 2011-12 academic year

The Braddock Education Success Team (BEST) Program was incorporated into the Embry-Riddle Athletic Program during the 1999-00 academic year. The BEST Program is a branch of the Braddock Foundation, which was established by Robert & Lois Braddock. It is currently sponsored by their daughter and Spruce Creek Fly-in resident, Cherie Keemar, and was initiated by her late husband, Michael.

The BEST program offers tutoring and mentoring programs to assist student-ath-letes in managing their time between academics, athletics and social development. One of the fundamental components of the BEST Program is Study Hall, which is for student-athletes who are required to attend according to stipulations set by each respective team’s coaching staff. Study Hall is a place where tutors and mentors are available for student-athletes throughout the academic year. With its clearly defined criteria and rules of conduct, Study Hall strives to provide a structured environment

that will benefit student-athletes by improving study habits, honing focus and pro-viding one-on-one learning opportunities. It is not intended to be a substitute for regular class attendance and routine study, but is designed as an essential tool to help student-athletes achieve their academic objectives.

Dave Therneau serves as the Academic Enhancement Coordinator of the BEST Program. He and other BEST Program staff members oversee the daily operations of the Academic Advancement Center where all students, including athletes, can go and receive tutoring in many of the courses and subjects that are part of the curriculum at Embry-Riddle.

Embry-Riddle is in the process of constructing a new College of Arts & Sciences building. In it will house a 9,000 square foot facility dedicated to the University’s Academic Achievement Center, which includes the BEST Program.

SPORTS MEDICINE

The Embry-Riddle Sports Medicine Department provides ERAU student-athletes with the best medical care possible following an injury, to return the athlete back to school and competition as soon as possible in the safest manner. The areas of em-phasis for the Sports Medicine Department are injury prevention, injury evaluation, treatment, and injury/health education. We dedicate ourselves to providing a safe environment for our athletes to compete in.

Treatments, injury care, taping, practice, and game preparations are performed in the 1,000 square-foot athletic training room. Adjacent to this room is the 400 square-foot athletic training rehabilitation room. These rooms have a variety of equipment to provide the best care and rehabilitation possible for ERAU student-athletes.

NAIA - CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER

National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

NAIA Quick Facts• 60,000 student-athletes• 13 sports• 23 national championships• 300 colleges and universities• $450 million in athletic scholarships

champions of characterrespect • Responsibility • Integrity • Sportsmanship • servant Leadership

Embry-Riddle Champions of Character Quick Facts

• John Mark Adkison, ERAU’s Champions of Character Liaison

• 1570+ hours of community service by ERAU student-athletes in 2011-12

• ERAU named a 2011-12 NAIA Champions of Character Five Star Institution

The Champions of Character initiative was established by the NAIA to help promote the “right thing” by those affiliated with sports both inside and outside the sports setting. In so doing, the organization looks to develop exemplary character and sportsmanship in NAIA competition.

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. This program educates and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and returns integrity to competi-tion at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society.

Under the guidance of Assistant Athletic Director John Mark Adkison, who serves as ERAU’s Champions of Character liaison, the Embry-Riddle Athletic Department has enthusiastically embraced the implementation of the NAIA Champions of Character initiative. For years the department has sought to instill in student-athletes the very values addressed by the movement.

Embry-Riddle’s intercollegiate teams participate in Champions of Character events throughout the school year, including:• Elementary school reading programs• Habitat for Humanity• Food Brings Hope• Beach clean-up• Children’s Home Society Christmas Drive• Embry-Riddle Housing move-in • Serving Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless

In addition to these events, the department instituted a Student-Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) that assists in the planning of Champions of Character events within the community.

Throughout its history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction of intercollegiate championship basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained the high-est standards while administering first-rate athletics programs.

With its major emphasis on education and character development, it was natural for the NAIA to further strengthen academic eligibility requirements in the 1980s. All NAIA participating student-athletes must maintain a 2.0 grade-point-average (GPA) while accumulating credit hours for a declared academic degree. Unlike other associations, NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a term-by-term basis.

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs and championships in proper bal-ance with the overall educational experience. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport.
