BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSSETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the

playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-

tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly

at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s

student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all

Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates

twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2011, Bucknell ranked

No. 4 in the nation.

Bucknell has claimed a league-high 127 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-

letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference

in 1990-91.

A total of 392 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-

or Roll in 2011-12 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their

sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 266 made

the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring 2012 semester.

In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced

since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 329 Academic All-District honor-

ees over the same span, including 15 in 2011-12.

Bucknell has earned 91 Patriot League championships in 22 years in

the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the

year, 99 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 533 individual league

champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming

& diving, tennis and golf.

24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in

the spring of 2012.

Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying

the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 22-year history of the

affiliation, including 13 of the last 15 years.

Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn

State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-Amer-

ica selections with 121.

A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-

lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which

opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of

its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-

pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the

Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s

Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports

medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room

and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSA NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by pro-moting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features pro-gramming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

Craig Schwartz joined the Bison tennis programs in 2012 after five years as the head men’s tennis coach at Queens College in New York City. He led the Knights to an 86-28 dual-match record, earning NCAA Tournament bids in each season and Round of 16 appearances in each of the last four campaigns. Schwartz’s overall head coaching record in eight seasons at the NCAA Division II level, which also includes a stint at his alma mater Dowl-ing College, is an impressive 112-46. Prior to his time at Queens, Schwartz spent three seasons as head coach at Dowling College from 2003-04 and 2005-07. He led the Golden Lions to three NCAA Championships, a Round of 32 appearance in 2003-04 and the

New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (now East Coast Conference) title in 2004. Schwartz has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Associa-tion’s East Region Coach of the Year twice in his college coach-ing career, first in 2004 at Dowling and again in 2009 at Queens. He was also selected the East Coast Conference Coach of the Year in 2003, 2009 and 2010. In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Schwartz has served as a tennis pro at the Park Avenue Tennis Club in Huntington, N.Y., and coached Marlene Weingartner to a world ranking of No. 36 in 2002-03. Schwartz graduated from Dowling College in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in business adminis-tration.

Coaches ProfilesRebecca Helt is in her 16th season as head coach of the women’s tennis

team, and her 11th at the helm of the men’s program. As coach of the Bison women’s squad, Helt has notched a 165-150 record. With the men’s squad, she has recorded a 91-128 mark.

Helt led the Bison women’s squad to six consecutive Patriot League champi-onship matches between 2005 and 2010, while in 2008 the men finished above .500 for the first time since 2002.

Perhaps the highlight of Helt’s coaching career came last season when she led Gregg Cohenca and Evan Zimmer to the NCAA Championships in doubles for the first time both Bucknell and Patriot League history.

During her career, Helt has coached 17 All-Patriot League singles players and two conference players of the year. Included on the all-league list are current Bison Josh Katten, the first Bucknell men’s player to claim honors as a freshman, and Zimmer. Additionally 2011 graduate and all-time wins leader Lauren Lucido was a First Team All-Patriot League choice in her senior campaign, becoming only the second Bison player to earn honors four times in her career. Also topping Helt’s list of multi-year selections are Tania Varela, Bucknell’s first four-time honoree and the 2010 conference player of the year, as well as Paulina Gamboa (2007-09), Veronica Brown (2005-06), Dumitrita Iepuras (2009-10, 2012) and Nada Curcic (2004-05). Curcic also became the first Patriot League Player of the Year in the history of the program in 2005.

Ira Reibeisen, who ranks second on Bucknell’s all-time men’s wins list, earned three consecutive First Team All-Patriot League honors, the first Bison to ever accomplish that feat.

Helt also coached one all-league doubles team in Kerry Callaghan and Kristin Inglis, while Callaghan was also an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2000. Helt also had the opportunity to coach a Patriot League Sportsmanship Award winner, Asher Salam.

A 1990 graduate of Lock Haven University, Helt earned a bachelor of arts degree in journalism while competing for the Lock Haven tennis team. Following her college graduation, Helt earned a teaching certification from the United States Professional Tennis Registry and began teaching part time while working for STEP, Inc., in its wilderness-based team building program.

In 1994, Helt was hired as the assistant pro at West Branch Racquet Club in Williamsport, Pa. She continued her duties at West Branch while coaching the girls’ tennis team at Williamsport High School.

Two years later, Helt was hired at the Doylestown Racquet Club in Doylestown, Pa. She has won three different raquetball state cham-pionships. Helt took over the women’s coaching reins at Bucknell in 1997, and in 2002 she was named the Bison men’s coach as well. Helt is also involved in tennis on the national level as an NCAA chair for women’s tennis.

Helt continues her involvement in the game outside of Bucknell’s program, including receiving a generous grant from USTA to pro-mote tennis in the local community. Helt also volunteers during the summer as a Special Olympics sport advisor, where she works with various events.

Men’s Season Preview Maturity, experience and heightened expectations are the name of the game for Bucknell men’s tennis in 2012-13. The Bi-son return all but two of their letterwinners from a year ago, and in that mix of those back for another turn is a trio of seniors who have long solidified themselves as some of the most noteworthy players in recent history. With the help of veteran captains Josh Katten, Kelly Morque and Evan Zimmer as well as highly touted freshman Nick Bybel, Bucknell is poised to make some noise in the Patriot League and make a run at a championship title. “If things go the way we are planning, if we execute our plan, I feel this could be the year we get to the finals,” said Rebecca Helt, who is entering her 11th season as the Bison men’s head coach. “It just comes down to execution.” Bucknell should have the tools to make sure that happens, and few will gather more attention than the Orange and Blue’s senior triumvirate. Katten and Zimmer return this season having claimed more victories than any other Bison during the 2011-12 season. Zimmer, who made up one-half of the Bison doubles duo that earned the program’s first-ever NCAA Championships berth last spring, finished his junior campaign with 50 combined wins. Of those, 31 came on the doubles court, which became the new Bucknell standard for most doubles wins in a single season. A Second Team All-Patriot League honoree, Zimmer went 20-6 with recent graduate and fellow NCAA Championships partici-pant Gregg Cohenca and 11-1 with Katten. Katten finished his junior season with 47 total victories. His 22-11 record in singles gave him the most wins among Bison last year, but his 25-10 doubles mark was nothing to scoff at either. Like Zimmer, Katten also ranks among the best Bison in single-season doubles wins, finishing the year tied for fourth. He and Zimmer were also 5-0 in doubles together during regular-sea-son conference play, and both Bison surpassed the 100 career combined wins mark last spring. Not to be left out, Morque has been making his presence felt in the lineup more and more over the years. His wins total in singles has increased with each passing season and his doubles record, which was 18-14 last year, has consistently been among the best on the team.

That Bucknell had such doubles success last season comes as no surprise to those on the practice courts with the Bison. The first to admit that her team often struggled in doubles play in previous years, Helt made the necessary adjustments and the results followed. “We didn’t have a lot of natural doubles players coming onto the team, so last year we really focused hard on doubles and that

year’s worth of work and focus really paid off for us in the end.” Specifically that work could be seen as the Bison won 14 of a possible 24 doubles points. Bucknell was also claimed all five doubles points in Patriot League regular-season action. “All three seniors have learned so much over the past three years and not only have they learned, but they have learned to apply it and they’ve learned to teach it to the younger guys,” Helt praised. “I do look for them to leave a few marks before they leave.” Younger but no less experienced is the junior class of Scott Bernstein, Aidan Lynch, Kyle Rosen and Chris Tortora. Rosen earned a regular spot among singles starters and went 17-14 playing at the bottom half of the lineup a year ago. Those 17 victories rank as the third-most among returning Bison behind only Katten and Zimmer.

Tortora saw his greatest success in the fall, claiming 10 of his 11 singles wins and all six of his doubles victories during tournament play. Lynch, on the other hand, worked his way into the lineup later in the year, catapulting to No. 1 doubles with Cohenca late in the spring. “We have a solid group of juniors who are getting a little bit tired of waiting,” said Helt. “They’re ready to make a solid im-pact once and for all, so they’ve worked hard over the summer.” Bucknell’s group of underclassmen includes sophomores Octavio Canibe, Jonathan DeFrancesch and Roy Skinner, and the lone incoming rookie Bybel. Canibe showed flashes of what he would accomplish during the fall season. As a fresh-man, he went 10-2 in singles, made two tournament finals and finished with one title. He ultimately closed his debut season 17-12 in singles playing primarily in the middle of the lineup. DeFrancesch joined the team in the spring and is expected to continue to contribute in the new season. “Those guys have come back a lot more physically fit than they were last year,” complimented Helt. “The two of them will definitely make an impact this year.” Despite being new to the group, Bybel will be looked to almost immediately. The highest ranked junior player ever to grace Bucknell’s roster, the freshman is likely to push his team-mates from the start and contend for a position at the top of the lineup.

sive starts to their careers. Jen Bush and Alyssa McAndrew had stout performances last fall, winning doubles at the Bucknell In-vitational which turned out to be the team’s only tournament ti-tle. Lydia Colvin began her freshman campaign with a slow start during the fall of 2011, but cemented her place in the singles dual matches with a 7-14 record during the spring.

The Patriot League has been dominated by the U.S. Naval and Military academies over the past few seasons, but Helt be-lieves the team is poised to make another run into the top half of the Patriot League standings.

“We fought hard toward the end of the season to come back and tie for third with Colgate,” said Helt. “This year I think we will get back up there even though the academies will have a bit of an edge, but we will be back up there in the top half.”

This is the second straight year that the women’s squad will have a team dominated by underclassmen. The fall tournaments will be a critical time for the first- and second-year players to continue to perfect their form and gain valuable experience be-fore a spring season that boasts some very strong teams. The team welcomes incoming players in Maria Cioffi, Ellie Fraser, Sam Madnick and Stephanie Pino. This group of incoming rook-ies has combined to win many accolades in the junior tennis and high school ranks, which include two All-State recipients, one doubles state champion and nine league or district champion-ships.

Cioffi makes a short journey from her hometown of Wil-liamsport, Pa., to Bucknell. She joins the Bison after a success-ful career playing for South Williamsport High School where she was an All-State tennis player finishing fourth in the boys’ state tournament, making her the first female to win a round at the Pennsylvania state championship while playing for a boys’ team.

One of Helt’s goals is to focus on building the team’s men-tal toughness for the grind of the spring season. This will come through setting the tone in doubles play and trying to earn that first team point. She knows that this year will be another chal-lenge for the women’s side but is eager to see them progress as a unit throughout the season.

Women’s Season PreviewIn the 2012-13 season, the Bucknell women’s tennis team

brings back a squad of underclassmen who have learned the ropes from last year’s tie for third place with Colgate in the Pa-triot League standings. With a roster of 10 underclassmen, the Bi-son will turn to senior Daria Tuzhikova and junior captains Elena Vidrascu and Elizabeth Morgan to lead the way and make the push back into the top of the league standings.

Tuzhikova heads into her final season with 54 career victo-ries. The senior currently ranks No. 30 on Bucknell’s all-time wins list and needs just six more victories to move into the top 25. The majority of Tuzhikova’s wins come from her strong doubles play as she has accumulated 39 wins her first three years. Tuzhiko-va, who missed the 2011 fall season while studying abroad in France, looks to build her resume in the fall tournaments before rolling into the prime spring schedule.

Vidrascu finished last season with a 12-15 singles record, ty-ing her for the most on the team with former teammate Dumitrita Iepuras with the majority of her play coming in the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. Vidrascu is five singles, two doubles and seven com-bined wins from cracking into the top 25 in each category. With two years of tennis behind her, Vidrascu’s maturity will play a large role in captaining the team through tough mental on-court situations.

With the likes of Iepuras, Lauren Lucido and Tania Varela all graduating over the past three seasons, the team looks to fill those voids with the youthful talent that has arrived on campus. The three have left big shoes to fill after combining for 435 ca-reer wins.

The women’s rookie class will challenge the sophomores throughout the season looking to earn themselves a role in the top six on the team. The young Bison look to prepare themselves for a demanding season in which they are much more experi-enced physically and mentally from just a year ago.

“The returning ladies learned a great deal about the transi-tion from junior tennis to college tennis and worked really hard over the summer,” said head coach Rebecca Helt, who is enter-ing her 16th season as the women’s head coach. “All those girls are back ready to apply that now and take the next step up.”

Several returning sophomores look to continue the impres-

William C. Bartol (1887): William Bartol, a pioneer of baseball and tennis at Bucknell and head of the mathematics department for 46 years, is generally given credit for creating the nickname “Bisons” for Bucknell athletic teams. An outstanding student and athlete as an undergraduate, he also served as head of the engineering department and as director of the observatory. Bartol played on baseball teams that lost only one game in four years while helping raise funds in support of the Athletic Association. About 1910, he suggested that the nickname “Bisons” be adopted for Bucknell teams because of the proximity of the campus to areas populated by the American bison in the late 1700s. Bartol, who died in 1940 at the age of 92, was connected with Bucknell longer than any other person in its history as a student, teacher and university historian. Bartol entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1987.

Malcolm E. Musser (’18): A basketball and tennis player as an under-graduate and later varsity basketball coach and freshman football and baseball coach, Musser probably coached, taught and watched more Bucknell athletes than any other person. Musser entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1979.

Thomas A. Thompson (’60): A three-year starter in baseball and basketball and captain of both teams, Thompson pitched in the Detroit Tigers system and has coached baseball, basketball, golf and tennis teams at Bucknell. Thompson entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1986.

Alexander Anderson (’71): A three-year letterman in tennis and captain his senior year. Anderson had a career singles record of 38-2. He continues to hold the school record for consecutive match victories at 33, and is third in career singles match winning percentage at .950. Anderson entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1999.

Stephen W. Baird (’72): The 1971 MAC fall tennis champion, Baird was an Eastern singles semifinalist and doubles finalist in 1972 and had a career 38-1 singles record. President of the American Platform Tennis Association, Baird is a five-time national champion in the sport. Baird entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1983.

Marjorie A. Deck (’73): Co-captain of the field hockey and basketball teams, Deck was also undefeated in tennis dual matches in her career and ranked fifth in the East as a senior. Deck is often referred to as one of the pioneers of women’s tennis at Bucknell having played on the team before women’s sports gained varsity status in the fall of 1973. Women’s tennis was given varsity status only months after Deck’s graduation. Her success on the club team had much to do with the upgrade of women’s tennis to varsity status. Deck entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1989.

Ed Hess (’90): One of the best tennis players in Bucknell history, Hess held the school record for singles victories at 60 until the fall of 2007, while accumulating only three singles losses during his career. He stands 12th on the singles-doubles combined win list at 101 and is 14th on Bucknell’s all-time doubles victories list. Hess won the East Coast Conference singles title in 1987, 1989 and 1990, in addition to two conference doubles titles. His teams won three ECC team championships, posting a 38-12 record in those seasons. Hess entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2003.

Rose Ewan: One of Bucknell’s leading promoters of women’s athletics, Ewan was involved with Bison Athletics in various capacities for 25 years. As head women’s tennis coach for 18 years (1979-97), she compiled a 183-120-1 dual-match record and led the Bison to Patriot League championships in 1992 and 1994. Ewan also was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year following both championship seasons. From September 1991 to October 1992 the team won a school-record 25 straight matches. The 1991-92 team finished 16-1 and was part of a five-year stretch in which it went 64-9. Upon arriving at Bucknell in 1978, Ewan served as head coach of the field hockey and women’s lacrosse teams for one year, coordinator of women’s athletics in 1980, associate direc-tor of athletics in 1990 and eventually associate athletic director for recreation services prior to her retirement. Most importantly, Ewan successfully guided women’s athletics at Bucknell through a difficult transition period, including the merger of the men’s and women’s athletic departments. Ewan entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2010.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport confer-ence in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked first each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Gradu-ation Rate Report. The League finished at the top spot with nearly all of its teams reporting a gradua-tion rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data. In addition,

82 teams from Patriot League full-member institutions earned NCAA Academic Performance Program Public Recognition Awards after post-ing academic progress rate scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The Patriot League’s mission is simple, to provide successful competi-tive athletic experiences while maintaining high academic standards, and to prepare its student-athletes to be leaders in society.

During the 2011-12 academic year, Patriot League student-athletes and teams accomplished the following:

• In the latest release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate, 94 percent of Patriot League teams scored at or above the national Division I four-year average score of 973.

• 79 Patriot League teams, and 84 overall from full-member institutions, earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for finishing in the top 10 percent of all teams in the most recent four-year APR scores.

• Navy won the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup for the first time in school history, and also won the women’s title. Lehigh edged the Mids for the men’s crown.

• Lehigh, a No. 15 seed, defeated No. 2 Duke 75-70 in a second-round NCAA Tournament game on March 16. The victory is up for a “best upset” award for the ESPYs.

• Colgate’s Peter Baum became the first player in Patriot League history to win the Tewaaraton Award as the top collegiate lacrosse player, and also claimed the Lt. Enners Award for the same distinction.

• Colgate’s Elise DeRoo was named the Patriot League Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Army’s Brendan Buckley won the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.

• DeRoo was also one of two nominees from the Patriot League for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, along with Navy’s Jess Palacio.

• Ten student-athletes were named Capital One Academic All-Ameri-cans, including first-team selections for Army’s Brendan Buckley (lacrosse), Army’s Zach Price (Baseball), Bucknell’s Tim Bolte (Football) and Lehigh’s Jennifer Colquhoun (Softball).

• 48 student-athletes earned Capital One Academic All-District rec-ognition.

• It was the first time in Patriot League men’s basketball history that three teams played in the postseason tournament: Lehigh (NCAA), Bucknell (NIT), American (CIT).

• For just the second time in history, two teams won a postseason game as Bucknell also beat Arizona 65-54 in the first round of the NIT on March 14.

• American became the first women’s basketball team to post a perfect 14-0 mark in Patriot League play.

• Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum was named ECAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Year as well as an honorable mention AP All-American.

• Georgetown’s Andrew Schaetzke finished fourth in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, was honored as ECAC FCS Defensive Player of the Year and became the ninth player in Patriot League history to earn consen-sus FCS All-America honors from the four major awarding organizations.

• Eight players were named FCS All-Americans overall, with Lehigh’s Ryan Spadola and Bucknell’s Bryce Robertson joining Schaetzke as first-

The Department of Athletics and Recreation strives to set the standard of excellence for intercollegiate and intramural programs in higher education, thereby advancing and drawing attention to the mission, core values, and educational goals of Bucknell University.

The Department believes that student-athletes’ academic programs must be their first priority. It is therefore committed to maintaining Bucknell’s high national ranking for student-athletes’ graduation rates and for producing Academic All-Americans, and to continued leader-ship of the Patriot League in Academic Honor Roll nominations, based on grade-point averages. The coaches’ and staff’s paramount respon-sibility is maintaining academic priorities and supporting student-athletes’ education, even while providing the rigorous and serious NCAA Division I athletic opportunities Bucknell student-athletes seek.

Further, the Department promotes the personal growth of student-athletes and the general student body by encouraging personal health, development, and balance among intellectual, social, civic, and physical pursuits; by celebrating challenge and competition; and by preparing participants for service and leadership in the world. Coaches and staff direct a rich array of athletic programs and recre-ational opportunities aimed at increasing student engagement, as well as strengthening character, healthy living, teamwork, sportsmanship, and spirit. In creating shared experiences for students, faculty, and staff, as well as alumni, family, and friends, the Department’s programs add substantially to Bucknell’s sense of community and foster life-long relationships with Bucknell.

The Department embraces the University’s decision to compete at the highest extramural level, in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Division I membership is valuable not only because this level of competition maximally challenges student-athletes, but also because it signals clearly Bucknell’s high standards and seriousness of purpose in all extracurricular endeavors and it helps position Bucknell apart from other National Liberal Arts Colleg-es. Likewise, the competitive success the Department seeks, measured in part by consistent contention for the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, reflects positively upon Bucknell’s student-athletes and the University alike, and it brings distinction and national recognition to Bucknell.

A student-centered operation, the Department is committed to providing equitable opportunities to women and men, as well as members of minority and majority groups of all kinds. The Depart-ment subscribes to, and complies with, all principles and regulations of the Patriot League, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the NCAA.

In keeping with that purpose, the University has developed The Plan for Bucknell, which includes its collective vision — “To provide students with the premier undergraduate experience in American higher education.”

The Plan comprises fi ve strategies.Strengthen the Academic Core aims to ensure that a Bucknell

The Bucknell University Department of Athlet ics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 22 years, national lead-ership in graduation rates, 121 Academic All-Americans since 1970 and 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 22 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of upholding the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Lan-gone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

The facility enhances each of Buck-nell’s 27 varsity programs and greatly expands the scope of its growing intra-mural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Natatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell graduate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construc-tion. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The con-struction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its newly installed FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and new indoor instructional facility; Depew Field, the home of the Bison baseball team; the Becker Field softball diamond; and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a training room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.
