thank you!

Mark KoepsellExecutive Director/CEO

Caitlin RobertsBoard of Directors Chair

On behalf of the Board of Directors; Central Office staff;and the many, many volunteers of the Association, THANK YOU for helping to make 2012-2013 a great year for AFLV. During the past year, AFLV has been able to grow, develop, and impact the fraternal movement in positive ways thanks to the strong and effective relationships between the Association and its many partners like you: members, volunteers, exhibitors, other associations, and our fraternal partners.

Financially, AFLV continues to exhibit a strong, healthy peformance. Our goal continues to be to maintain financial stability while simultaneously keeping our focus as a non-profit organization that serves the needs of our fraternal community.

Membership is another barometer of our health, and at the end of the fiscal year, we have 512 total member subscribers (this does not include Fraternal Values Society individual members). This number shows a slight increase from 510 subscribers last year, an accomplishment in a slowly recovering economy. It is our continued goal to engage those individuals within our member groups and to exceed their expectations through successful delivery of cutting edge programs and services.

Speaking of programs and services, we had several accomplishments in 2012-2013. The undergraduate leadership confences continue to provide our foundation, an both conference were big successses. We are thrilled to see continued growth in both the National Black Greek and National Cultural Greek Leadership Conferences. The Fraternal Housing Conference continues to be a success and provide valuable education to house directors and house corporation members who serve our students on the front lines. Addtionally, we were able to expand our Service Immersion Experience partnerships to partner with Alpha Sigma Phi and Kappa Alpha Theta with more partnerships on the horizon. We are thrilled about the steady growth of the Fraternal Values Society and look forward to providing even more FVS resources.

Finally, AFLV has completed its first year as a co-owner of Synergos, an Association Management Company, a parternship with the Association of Fraternity /Sorority Advisors. With the formation of the association managment company, we were able to expand our staff to ten full-time positions that are all dedicated to an area of expertise.

We think you will agree that 2012-2013 was a great year for our Assocation, and with your continuing support and assistance, we believe have positioned ourselves well for the future.

programs

The AFLV Awards & Assessment Program is designed specifically to assist councils in achieving the highest level of excellence possible in their programming and council management. The documents outilne the actions and policies of an ideal council. As such, if councils utilize the program for goal setting and as a guide for action and visionary accomplishment, they will be well on the road to achieving excellence. Participating councils receive a full assessment report that measures both their own longitudinal progress as well as benchmarking them against peer councils. A record number of councils submitted awards packets this year. Awards were given at both CFL/NBGLC and WFL/NCGLC/O&G.Please see our full list of award winners on page 15.

The Fraternal Values Society is an organization for undergraduate fraternity and sorority members focused on implementing a grassroots movement where values change community. This year, the FVS identified areas for growth and improved chapter services.

FVS expanded to eight campuses this year. These included the University of California, Berkeley; Marshall University; California State University, Fresno; San Diego State University; West Chester University; Ball State University; Minnesota State University–Mankato; and the University of Central Oklahoma.

FVS educational sessions were presented at AFLV Central and AFLV West and included instructional steps to establish a chapter. Staff also spent considerable time updating chapter rosters and ensuring that processes are in place to accurately capture chapter data.

As our new Director of the Fraternal Values Society joined staff in May, we examined current practices and identified a course of action to create chapter growth and improve services.

A focus group was held at Elmhurst College in June 2013 with a variety of stakeholders. This included current campus partners, critics, student members, and strategic partners.

The conversation led to creating the following three steps to build and improve FVS:

1. Resource Development: We have created a chapter operations calendar, and a new resource is being launched for members each month during the academic year. Our goal is to continually create and offer fresh, relevant content.

2. Chapter Services: Communication and outreach are critical to supporting existing chapters. Improving areas such as the website, ease of accessing forms, and clarity in processes are key components to reaching this goal.

3. Chapter Outreach: As resources improve, opportunities arise for more campuses to advance the fraternal movement by hosting a chapter. Several new chapter locations have been identified, and a new resource, the Start-Up Kit, has been created. The intention is to provide charters to chapters that have prepared their community to host a FVS chapter for long-term, sustainable growth.

We look forward to continuing to spread the purpose and mission of the Fraternal Values Society through exceptionally designed resources, intentional chapter growth, and communication with existing chapters.

Another way to support AFLV is through the silent auctions that take place at each of the undergraduate leadership conferences. Individuals, organizations, speakers, and businesses donate to these auctions. Although this giving does not count toward the individual giving levels, it is instrumental to the Association. Similarly, the individuals and organizations that bid on the auction items provide the funding that supports our programs, events, scholarships, and general operating costs. Thank you to everyone that has supported AFLV through our silent auctions.

AFLV Continues Solid Performance in 2012-2013

As Secretary-Treasurer, I am happy to be able to report that AFLV continues to exhibit strong financial performance in 2012-2013. As we did in 2011-2012, AFLV will finish 2012-2013 in

the black and exceed budgeted net operating income goals for the year.

Here are some key items that impacted AFLV’s financial performance in the past fiscal year.

Subscriber RevenuesIn a slowly recovering economy, we are happy to see growth in our membership subscriptions (see full details on pages 20 and 21).

Membership subscription appears to correlate with conference attendance, but as Association resources maintain a high level of excellence, subscribers are finding more value in their membership subscription.

Synergos, AMCAFLV, in partnership with the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors, is a client owner in Synergos, an association management company.

Synergos was incorporated on July 1, 2012. With the formation of the association management company, we were able to expand our staff to ten full-time positions that are all dedicated to an area of expertise.

A larger staff has led to improvements including:

• a restructured database, which allowed us to collect more useful demographic information from subscribers;

• a quicker turnaround on customer service-related issues;

• more intentional, innovative programming;

• a restructured volunteer organizational chart to clarify staff and volunteer duties;

• an increased capacity for marketing and communications, allowing for a more engaged subscribership.

Additionally, the synergy of an association management company has created dramatic decreases in operational costs, travel, and business expenses.

ConferencesOur two undergraduate leadership conferences continue to provide the financial foundation to the organization.

CFL/NBGLC continues to grow each year. The 2013 conference saw record-breaking attendance in its new location in Indianapolis and exceeded budgeted income by 15%.

Attendance at the West Fraternal Leadership and National Cultural Greek Leadership and Out & Greek LGBT & Ally Conference stayed steady from 2011-2012 and exceeded budgeted income.

The Fraternal Housing Conference experienced a 16% growth in attendance and exceeded budgeted income by 25%. We are proud to see our unique conference grow as it has provided needed education for more than 20 years.

Fraternal Values SocietyIn its third year as an AFLV initiative, the Fraternal Values Society continues to grow and sustain a profit. As we continue to execute membership growth strategies, we expect to see more success. We are proud to offer more innovative resources for Society members, chapters, and potential chapters, and we are encouraged by steady membership growth.

Greeks for GoodIn its second year, Greeks for Good has performed well and continues to create strong organizational partnerships.

Current partners include:• AFA Foundation• Bowling Green

State University• Elmhurst College

• Kappa Alpha Theta• Troy University• Malaria No More• Zeta Beta Tau

Investments and ReservesAFLV made significant investments in infrastructure by purchasing new office space with additional income from office tenants. Additional investments include part ownership in Synergos, AMC, which is also an investment in ourselves as an association.
