The ever popular Safari Supper has started what will be a
busy year in Cople. I have introduced an Event Planner to help us keep track of what is going on and assist
organisers to de-conflict their events. British Summertime
starts on 25th March and the optimistic gardeners amongst us will put aside memories of the drought stricken last 12
months and hope for better luck this year. As the Lawn
Doctor points on page 26, it is time to make the grand design.
I would like to welcome C R Wilkinson, the tree surgeons,
who have joined our list of advertisers. I have found new
printers for the magazine, Kallkwik, in Bedford. Their
quotation represents a significant saving to the magazine and will help our advertising revenue go further. Their
advert is on page 35.
This month’s front cover is a particularly stark image from
Marilyn Southgate. For me this represents March but others may prefer the sight of daffodils. I promise
something more cheerful next month. If you have an
image that you are fond of why not let me use it at some
appropriate time.
Having just returned from a walk around Moggerhanger Park it is possible to believe that the winter is over, Easter
is just around the corner and then it will be summer. We
all know it doesn’t work quite like that but so what. A great deal of money is being spent at Moggerhanger and it
is well worth regular visits.

Letter from the Vicarage One of the strengths of the parochial system of the Church of England is that we are part of a national structure. We are in a joint Benefice with Cople and Moggerhanger, in the Deanery of Biggleswade, the Archdeaconry of Bedford and the Diocese of St
Albans. The result is that we receive help and support from our Archdeacon, Bishop and Diocesan staff on various matters such as buildings, finance, ministry and mission. In a small village such as ours it is good to meet together with other churches for mutual support and encouragement.
This is the prime purpose of the Deanery Chapter for clergy and the Deanery Synod. Biggleswade Deanery have always worked well together especially with regard to mission and charitable giving.
They usually raise £2000 from the collections at Deanery Lent Evensongs and donations from the parishes. Each year the Deanery Synod members choose a charitable project to support and alternate between our own country and abroad. All the parishes in the Deanery are welcome to nominate a project and a vote is taken. The word “Project” is carefully chosen as the criterion is that the money given be used to fund something particular not just given to the general fund. A couple of years ago Moggerhanger was successful in nominating BeCHar and
raised enough money to buy a commercial washing machine. Last year Cople nominated The Handicapped Riders at Willington and as a result bought Frankie a new horse for the riding school (incidentally there is a photograph in this month Diocesan news “See Round”)
I am pleased to say that Willington were successful with their nomination to support “The Utange Project” in Kenya. The project was founded by Debbie Scott, from Bromham Baptist Church in 2007. With a small team of helpers she raised enough
money to build an orphanage for 24 AIDS Victims. With the drought in neighbouring Somalia food costs in Kenya have more than doubled so they are keen to further develop their half acre of farming land to grow their own crops. They intend to spend

some of the money raised by the Deanery on crops and trees to grow fruit and vegetables. Any additional money that is given will be used to buy a microwave, a blender to make fruit juice, ceiling fans for the bedrooms and new seating in various rooms. I am planning to join a team in November who will be visiting the orphanage I will then be able to report back first hand how the Deanery money is being used.

Curate’s Corner “Pilgrimage has always been an important part of religious thinking, and indeed of human experience. To go on pilgrimage to a holy place is an acted symbol of our journey through life, a journey with
and towards God” (http://www.stalbanscathedral.org)
With this in mind we are planning to take some of our young people on the Easter Monday pilgrimage to St Albans Abbey on 9th April. The Pilgrimage brings pilgrims from across the diocese
and further afield, mostly on foot, to celebrate the resurrection in an informal act of all age worship. Taking part in such an event offers the opportunity to share our time and thoughts with others, to reflect on our faith and to join in worship with over a thousand other Christians.
This year, as we did in 2011, we hope to join with St Andrew’s Church in Biggleswade and travel by coach to Harpenden. We will then walk the final miles or so, meeting up with other pilgrims on the way. The atmosphere in the Abbey is fantastic and the singing very loud and I know from last year the event
had a lasting affect on those who went.
So if you are a young person or know of someone who would like to join us then do contact Lynda or Jackie and we will give you more details. All we then hope for is dry weather!

Church Choirs The Junior Choir meets in the Church on a Monday at 6.15pm until approx 6.50pm.
At the moment I am taking children who are in year 2 school age and upwards. We sing, play percussion games and practice to perform at the monthly Family Services in the Church. We do not usually meet during half term and school holidays.
The Senior Choir meet at 7pm in the Church on the second Monday of the month at the moment. They sing at the All Age Worship service each month. We also perform at the Proms and the Christmas Friends Concert as well as Church events and weddings. Extra practices are fitted in where needed.

Biggleswade Chronicle Cash Points The Chronicle has the local news from around the villages including Cople.
As well as being the village correspondent for the above I also collect the cash points from this paper, found on page 2, for the Church. There is a box in the church where you can deposit the tokens or put them though my door. Each year
we receive a cheque to spend as we wish and usually I spend it on something for the children. To date I have bought books for the Sunday School and Tiny Tots, instruments for all to use and a puppet for Open The Book and drama performances.

Baptism Anniversary Service
4th March at 11.15am.
This year’s Baptism Anniversary Service will be a little different from last years. We will still renew our baptismal promises and there will be cup cakes for all the children but in addition we will be watching a DVD from the Bishop of St. Albans. In it he talks about the meaning of the waters of baptism and expands on the themes of Living God’s Love. The DVD is well produced and is about 10 minutes long.
The service itself gives us all an opportunity, through the renewal of our baptismal promises, to return afresh to our faith. All the children who have been baptised in recent years are invited to bring their baptismal candles with them.
We look forward to seeing you on 4th March.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting

Anyone who is on the Church Electoral roll is allowed to attend the Annual Meeting. At the meeting we will elect two Churchwardens, four members of the PCC and one Deanery Rep.
The real purpose of the meeting is to review the past year and then to discuss the future. We aim to keep the necessary business to a minimum so that we can hear your views and share ideas. There will also be a glass of wine to celebrate all
we have achieved and an opportunity to get to know one another a little better.
At the meeting we want to consider questions such as;
How would you like to see the Church develop and grow? What have we done well and what could we do better?
How can we best implement our Mission Action Plan?

CPRE Living Countryside Awards 2012
Call For Entries
The Bedfordshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) is once again seeking nominations for projects which improve the county’s appearance, preserve its character
and promote sustainability. The awards have become one of Bedfordshire’s most prestigious environmental accolades since their launch five years ago. The deadline for entries is 21st May.
The awards recognise groups or individuals that have made special efforts to improve the natural environment. The scheme is not competitive and anyone can nominate a project which they believe is deserving of recognition. The three categories for entries are Landscape Improvement, Historic and New
Buildings and Sustainable Living.
This year we are keen to see examples of new housing developments that are imaginatively designed and have limited environmental impact on their surroundings.
Previous award winners have included country parks and ponds, conservation schemes on farms, farm shops, church restoration, and individual craft businesses such as thatching.

Wild About Cople
Well, I knew I was asking for trouble when I said, in last month’s piece, that ‘Spring is a-coming’!
Of course it is a fickle time of year and, as often happens, we’ve had a snowfall, it is cold and icy and spring seems even further
away but I’m sure by the time you are reading this all will be back on track.
But at least the cold snap has given me the opportunity to talk about birds and the help they need in our gardens during winter.
We all know about feeding birds – lots of warming, energy-giving natural foods such as peanuts, fat balls, suet, sunflower seeds, niger seed etc. But equally important is to ensure a supply of clean water as they need to drink and keep their plumage clean and in good order.
Something to look out for during cold spells is what are known as ‘cold weather movements’ and this particularly relates to birds. At the moment we in the east are experiencing daytime temperatures around 2 - 3°C whilst the west of the country has temperatures of around 5 - 7°C. Many of our birds will be
moving around the country to seek out milder weather (and food supplies) or, in the case of waterfowl, unfrozen lakes and reservoirs. So we can often experience flocks of birds such as ducks, geese, lapwings and smaller birds such as skylarks and
meadow pipits all moving into, or out of our area. There have recently been several flocks of lapwings and geese flying over Cople as they move around to avoid the worst of the weather.
Some birds can suffer terribly during cold, frozen spells and herons and kingfishers can die if streams freeze up and with it
their source of food. Three herons flying slowly over the cricket pitch at dusk recently, with the backdrop of Cardington Airship Sheds and calling a harsh ‘frank-frank’ made a spectacle a couple of days ago.
When the cold weather relents now is a good time to plant trees – avoiding any frosty spells. I read recently that trees in the front garden of a property (or street) can add as much as 15% to the value of a house – another reason to plant trees

(preferably natives such as field maple, ash, hawthorn, oak etc) as well as their attractiveness and benefit to wildlife!
In the churchyard a great spotted woodpecker has set up territory and has started ‘drumming’ in the early mornings. The male bird uses a favourite trunk or branch
(which is often hollow or rotten) as a sounding board and drums on it rapidly and loudly by use of the beak. The skull has special shock-absorbing devices to lessen the huge impacts of
drumming. The drumming has two functions and acts as the bird’s song; to let any other male woodpeckers around know that this is his ‘patch’ and to stay away and to advertise himself to any females that may be around that he is ‘fit’, available, and owns a valuable piece of real estate and would like her as a partner! The
birds are very obvious with their black and white colouration and undulating, bouncing flight with a loud ‘tchik-tchik’ call. The male differs from the female in having a red patch at the back of the neck.
As an advance notice I’m planning to do an early morning bird walk sometime in May so we can look at, and listen to our birds singing and any other wildlife that may be about, hopefully on a lovely spring morning. We’ll meet at the church at about 7ish,
walk across the fields and through the Wood and back via Water End. Julie and Eamonn at the Five Bells have kindly offered to do a cooked breakfast, or other breakfast, for those who would like one after the walk, at a very reasonable cost. Mothers’ Union Unfortunately because of the bad weather in February,
Moggerhanger branch members were unable to attend our meeting. However, Cople members spent the afternoon, after payers, watching a DVD of the wonderful music of the Andre Rieu Orchestra. Tea and cakes followed. And Daphne was thanked for her hospitality.
Our meeting in March will be held on Monday 5th March at a venue to be arranged.
Members will be taking part in the Womens’ World Day of Prayer service on the 2nd March. The speaker will be Sister Marie Hayes, a nun from Luton.
The service has been prepared by the women of Malaysia on the theme “Let Justice Prevail”. Everyone is welcome to this service in Willington Church at 7pm.

In the cold, dank January wood a snowdrop lightens our winter darkness with its soft gleam. Tightly closed at first, its pale bud suddenly bursts into wonderful green, lace-edged delicacy, fluttering bravely above the frost and snow.
Lord, may we be like your snowdrop this Lententide; at first tightly closed in upon ourselves as we are once more drawn into the story of Christ’s life and passion, yet ready to burst out in joy and thanksgiving at the glory of Easter Sunday.
May our faith shine out bravely, lightening the darkness of the world’s winter so that it blossoms into the spring of new life in Christ.

Pete Moore
Extract from the Funeral Address
It is an honour to Pete’s life that so many of us are here
today. For this is the Church in the village that Pete
loved and we are the people who loved him. Each in our own way we want to thank God for the privilege of
knowing him and reflect a little on his life which although
cut short was lived to the full.
So it is no surprise that the Church is full as Pete was a
man with a great God given gift – a huge capacity to love. He adored Julia, his wife for 23 years and was proud of his
children Wendy, David, Keith, Richard and Phil and was
delighted with his grandson Alex who is now 7. He also enjoyed a large circle of friends many of whom are here
today.
When you met Pete you could not help but like him. From
a secure and happy home he was able to share his friendship through service to the village especially as
Chairman of the Parish Council, socialising in “The Five
Bells”, he was Churchwarden and on the PCC. He recently
obtained a grant for the refurbishment of the Village Hall. When he left school he trained as an architect. He was
also popular at work and was proud of the projects he had
seen to completion.
I believe that this was from a deep and committed faith. Mind you Pete was the last person to consider himself
“holy” as holiness is always seen more clearly by others
than yourself. Pete initially got involved in the life of the
church as a young man when the Vicar asked him to make a model of the church. He was more than happy to
oblige, got involved (as you would expect) and later was
confirmed. When he and Julia moved to Cople he got involved again and was the obvious choice when we

needed a Churchwarden. That was not only because of his
professional skill but also because he was so good with people. He could speak to anyone and always made you
feel better in his company. Although his family has always
enjoyed his charm and humour over the years in one way
or another he has managed to touch very many lives. So what made Pete so special and what are the memories
we want to treasure today.
He grew up in Middlesex with his three brothers and sister.
He loved London, enjoyed working there and the buzz of the city. He was a semi- professional footballer with
Hitchin Town and he was an ardent supporter of Chelsea.
He did a lot of running in his younger days and ran several marathons.
Pete was intelligent, an avid reader and did very well in his
career as an architect. He worked for Carillion for 11 years
and was proud to have worked on the projects at Angel
underground station, Billingsgate market and latterly the Olympics.
He met Julia at Eastcote, Middlesex when he had taken an
evening bar job to get out and meet people. They got
married in 1988 and moved to Bedfordshire first to Ickwell and then to Cople in 2001. Pete loved the village and
immediately felt at home. He got involved in anything and
everything and enjoyed having a drink and a chat and a
laugh. He could also be serious and put in a huge amount of effort to achieve the required results. He spent hours
on the gypsy and traveller situation and was chair of the
village Diamond Jubilee committee when he died.
In conclusion Pete was life enhancing, dignified,
enthusiastic, good fun and totally committed to all that he
did. He loved his family and all sorts of people and always
wanted the best for them.

This Month’s Gardening Tasks For many, the gardening year often begins in March. For this reason, it is a good idea to check the machinery you will be relying on throughout the coming months so that you are not left in the lurch later in the year when you will be at your busiest.
Petrol mowers, chainsaws, strimmers and hedge trimmers may all need sharpening, new blades, oil, plugs, etc, and if your budget runs to it, an annual service is always a good idea. For this, Cople based Groundcare Machinery Services (see advertisement featured in this publication), are an excellent choice: reliable, trustworthy and competitive.
The next task is to sit down with a cup of tea/coffee, a notepad and plan what you hope to see in your garden this year. I always start by working out how much I want to spend. Testing
what ph your soil is at different sites in your garden is the next step and this can be done by buying a cheap kit from a garden centre. This will tell you whether your soil is acid or alkaline which should then be recorded on a simple plan so that you can source suitable plants. Don’t do this and you can waste a lot of money buying plants that will never prosper.
A word of warning: whatever plants you do choose make sure you do not buy Busy Lizzie (Impatiens walleriana). In recent years, an airborne fungus has resulted in downy mildew which
destroys this old favourite. Other bedding plants, including New Guinea Busy Lizzie, are unaffected.

Meeting for the first time the fete organising committee members who braved the cold, met in the Church and began the process of planning the Church fete to be held on the 16th June
and made excellent progress. Determined to repeat the huge success of last years event they decided to follow a similar pattern and pray for a nice day this time! Anyone who wants to make a contribution to this vital fund raising event should contact Mike Vacher or June Shanahan or come to the next

Police update
NEW POLICE NON EMERGENCY NUMBER Bedfordshire Police and other forces nationwide are now using ‘101’ as the non emergency number replacing the existing 01234 841212. You can use this number anywhere in the country and it will take you through to the nearest towns police station.
CURRENT ISSUES Businesses and residents across Bedfordshire are being urged to take extra measures to prevent the possibility of their catalytic converters being stolen from vehicles. Over the past five weeks
a spate of thefts has taken place, many of these in Gt Barford and recently one in Willington.
Until recently, there has been little in the way of protecting catalytic converters from theft, but Bedfordshire Police would like to make you aware of a number of products which can help reduce the threat of theft and increase the chances of recovery.
A number of acid etching kits are now available, but while these will not prevent the converter from being removed, it does act as a deterrent as the converters can be easily traced back to the original owner. Etching kits are particularly useful for businesses which have a number of vehicles to protect.
Whilst Bedfordshire Police cannot promote or endorse any particular product or service, it does have an obligation to make the public aware of emerging crime reduction measures. If you have information relating to catalytic converter thefts contact Bedfordshire Police in confidence on 101.

SAFARI SUPPER February 11th
On one of the coldest nights of the winter so far
- 9 ½ °C (on very good authority!) - the annual
Safari Supper took place within the confines of Cople.
With side roads like ice-rinks and footpaths covered
in snow, intrepid devotees skated or crunched their
way around the village, relieved to reach their
destination still upright, and delighted to be invited
into a warm and friendly home, and to be fed ‘right royally’.
This must be the tenth consecutive Safari Supper and it is still as
popular as ever. Our only disappointment this year was to turn down
would-be participants, thus denying latecomers the chance to join in.
Please get on to us early next year – or, even better, offer to host –
and you will be guaranteed inclusion..
Thanks go to the organisers, hosts, and to all who came; in fact, to
everyone for contributing to the success of the evening. By visiting
parts of the village to which we had not ventured before and meeting
somebody new, or by catching up with old friends and acquaintances,
we were able to enjoy some of that magical community spirit which
exists here in Cople.

Sports and Social Club
Cople Sports and Social Club committee would like to express our condolences at the sudden loss of Pete Moore and express our sympathy to Julia, Richard and Phil. Pete was a dedicated committee member and will be sadly missed by us all.
February’s Curry Night was a heated success and warmed a few of us on a chilly evening. The Children had great fun in the snow which came down rather heavy and caused a few problems for those taxiing home. Thank you to Lorraine and Nicky for donating the Thai curry and Rogan Josh, the food was fabulous, hasten to add no left overs.
We are holding a Motown evening on Saturday March 17th so if you fancy a trip back from 1959 through the 60’s enjoying
artists like Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and The Three Degrees to name a few please come along and join us. We will be asking for a £1.00 donation which will provide party nibbles for the evening. Please feel free to dress up in sixties attire to add to the Motown experience. If you wish to come along please

Tuesday Club February 14th The talk on the 14th February was given by Mr Ryan Flecknell, Day Centre manager of BECHAR (Bedford concern for homeless
& rootless) also known as The Prebend Day Centre. As a registered charity BECHAR has been running The Prebend day centre since 1993. The centre is open 365days a year, available to vulnerable men and women aged 16 and over. Ryan gave an enlightening talk and his passion for his job was evident. The support team take a holistic approach to helping individuals take the next step towards reintegration into the local community. Just a few of the numerous services provided are low cost meals, medical help, showers, clean clothing, legal advice and emotional support. Even veterinary skills for any needy pets!. The Centre is run by 12 staff (3 Full time) and 40 volunteers. Only 45% of its expenditure is from statutory bodies. So donations of any kind are vital to the success of the centre. Nobody ever goes hungry. Crisis knows no boundaries.
Thank you to everybody who supported the bring and buy we raised £60 donated to BECHAR. The next meeting at Cople Village Hall will be on Tuesday 13th
March at 7:30pm. The subject will be Canine Partners dogs for the disabled. All are welcome. This meeting will include the AGM.

There will be a wine tasting evening on Saturday March 17th in the village hall. There will be supper to absorb some of the
alcohol. It should be a fun evening along the lines of a ‘Call my bluff’, nothing too serious. Any funds raised will support Ranger Motorbike Ambulances, St Andrew’s Clinics for Children and other Rotary Charities. St Andrew’s Clinics for Children (STACC) www.standrewsclinics.org.uk set up clinics in remote
areas in 6 sub-Saharan countries where medical facilities are lacking; Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda. According to UNICEF (2009) the overall U5MR (under 5 mortality rate) in sub-Saharan Africa is 148 per 1,000 live births: the U5MR in UK is 6 per 1,000 live births. The priority is given to children although sick mothers cannot be ignored if their children are to survive. STACC is run entirely by volunteers, there are no paid employees and none of its Directors receives any remuneration. Over 95% of the money
given to STACC is spent by health workers who belong to the communities they serve. Health care is free at the point of delivery. The charity, which was established in 1992, requires at least £100,000 per annum to run effectively
