Proceeds from this annual fund-raiser are used to support many Lions service projects on the local, state and international levels. Some of the local activities include pre-school vision testing, eye exams, glasses for those in need, and transportation of eye tissue to and from the Eye Bank in Madison. Other projects include scholarships, annual Easter Egg hunt, donations to the Safety Patrol trip, the High School athletic fund, Santa’s Workshop, and many others.

Bidding may also be done from St. Mary’s Cafeteria where all items will be on display. Bids from the

auction location will stop at 3:30 p.m. thus allowing the radio listeners the final half hour of phone bids.

Winners will be announced from 4:00 to 4:30 P.M. Please pick up winning items by 5:30 P.M. from St. Mary’s Cafeteria.

The Portage Lions would like to take this opportunity to thank all donors and everyone who participated in any way with this annual fundraising event. Special thanks to 1350 AM WPDR/Magnum Broadcasting for donating the radio time for the auction, the Daily Register for newspaper articles, and to Portage National Bank for providing a lunch for the auction workers and for one week of auction ads. We hope the community will benefit from our many service projects throughout the coming year.


Portage Lions Club

We Serve Mission - In the 1920s Helen Keller challenged the International Association of Lions Clubs to be Knights of the Blind. The Portage Lions Club was chartered in 1968. We are a service club committed to meeting the needs of our community first. Our primary mission is eye health. Our local club conducts 4-8 vision screenings each year for preschool children. We help to provide eye exams and glasses for needy individuals each year. We have also purchased closed circuit image magnifiers for the elderly. With the help of surrounding Lions Clubs, we donated a special camera to the county nurse to be used for vision screening county-wide. Every year children from our area attend the Lions Camp in Rosholt, WI. They sponsor weeks for hearing impaired, diabetic and developmentally disabled persons as well as the blind. Other services provided by the Portage Lions Club:

Sponsor Easter Egg Hunt 25+ years Transport eye tissue for transplants (any hour of the day or night.) Provide three scholarships to graduating PHS seniors 20+ years Sponsor the Sixth-grade field trip to Washington, D.C. or South Dakota 25+ years Sponsor students to World Affairs Seminars Built a bridge across the pond at Pauquette Park Developed Sunrise Park Provided bell ringers for the Salvation Army Drive campers to the Lions Camp in Rosholt, WI Benches purchased and placed along the Portage Canal Donate monetarily to Local Community Projects such as:

Money - Our primary fund raiser is the Radio Auction. All of the money raised goes in our Activity Fund to allow us to provide these services. A cookie dough sale in October – November pays for our scholarships. People – All of these services need people to plan and carry them out. We are a club of action. We would welcome men and women who would like to give something back to their community.
