LEADERSHIP IS INFLUENCEJohn Quincy adams said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”  in Paul Grabill’s life and ministry he has been that kind of a leader.

The PennDel Ministry Network has been favored to have Paul Grabill as our assistant Superintendent for the past 11 years. He has been a loyal advisor and counselor to me personally and a true friend.

Paul’s influence throughout our District, as well as the General council, has strengthened us and helped us to be a better fellowship, better ministers, and better followers of Jesus christ.

There are many things i appreciate and admire about him. His sense of humor is insightful and disarming. a commitment to the Kingdom of God in general and the autonomy of the local church in particular rank high on his agenda. in addition, the work of the Spirit is of paramount importance. He is a strategic thinker who is capable of ferreting out the implication of potential decisions that create long-term changes.

Recently some of the leaders in our Ministry Network expressed Paul’s mark of influence in this way:

“I thank God for your willingness to share your heart with your fellow pastors! You continue to invest into the hearts and lives of your colleagues, and for that I am very thankful!”

“You are a Godly man and an inspiration to the younger generation to pursue Jesus and live and lead like Him.”

“ I so admire your example of Holiness. Your hunger for the Lord is evident in everything you do and say, and your Godly Wisdom is truly a blessing to our fellowship.”

Recently we asked Paul to share with us some of his insights on life and leadership. Paul Grabill is an incredible gift from God to our fellowship.

His leadership is influence…

When did you first realize that you were a leader?actually, in kindergarten and first grade. However, skipping second grade and being, on average 18 months younger than my classmates, caused me to set aside any real leadership development until i was elected the Student Body President at Evangel in 1978. The years in between were quite frustrating, and no one seemed to know how to mentor me. Like many frustrated leaders, i thought i was a troublemaker. as a result of this, i wish i could help all frustrated leaders, particularly lay leaders who are sometimes a challenge to their pastors.

Grabill on lEadErSHiP

What has helped you to stay the course in the midst of discouragement?

1. Believing what i preach.

2. The incredible, overwhelming encouragement of God’s people.

Page 5: 2011q3

What advICE WOuld yOu gIvE tO a yOuNg lEadEr juSt StartINg Out?By all means, learn as much as you can as soon as you can by doing the following 1. Be a reader.2. Pick the brains of elders until they grow weary of you. 3. Learn from your critics rather than seeing them

as enemies.4. Be anxious for nothing.5. as Brother Bongiorno would say, “Do it now.”

Procrastination will cut your lifetime effectiveness in half (or more).

6. Stop complaining and start growing. 7. Let your humility be known to all.8. Tell people your name first when shaking their hand

(especially leaders). They will like you immediately for not testing them to try to remember your name. They may even think you to be humble.

9. Stop waiting for others to take the initiative on things. You’ve been given a mandate by God, get to it. Go ahead and fail a few (or more) times. You’ll survive. i did.

10. Listen. all the time. You never learn anything when you’re talking.

CONNEXIONS 3RD QTR 2011 5

What are the tools that you depend on to help you to grow spiritually?i hesitate to call my wife a tool...:) Daily devotions is probably my primary source.

Who had a tremendous impact on you as a young leader?Several. David Blattner, my pastor in college, believed in me and took me under his wing. Ron Bailey became like an older brother. Paul Wislocky became my pastor/father figure, and then Robert Spence at Evangel became my statesman/father figure. The biggest influence, however, was the breath of life that arline, my wife, brought to my life, along with the advice of her father, Bob Frederick.

What has been your most rewarding leadership moment?Walking Sc assembly of God through this valley.

What in your opinion is the most important attribute of a leader and why?Desiring the success of your followers more than your own. it actually becomes a win-win when that happens.

What leader do you really admire and why?1. Jesus. Why not?:) 2. The apostle Paul. Ditto.

What has given you the greatest feeling of accomplishment in your life? ministry? That the preacher’s kids are serving God.

What boundaries have you established to prevent your ministry from having negative consequences on your family?Never, ever discuss church problems in front of young children. Doing so leads them to later think that they would have had a happy family if it weren’t for the church. Worst thing any pastor with children can do.

Who are the people who have made a powerful mark on your life? There are far too many to list, i’m afraid.

Who have been your Paul, Barnabas and timothy?all have been different at different stages of my life, but i will say that the absence of any of these three, even when temporary, caused me to feel a huge void.

What has helped you to stay the course in the midst of discouragement?1. Believing what i preach; 2. The incredible, overwhelming encouragement of God’s people.

What spiritual discipline do you regularly practice in your life and how does it help you?Reading the Bible through each year for no reason other than personal devotions; daily and constant prayer; some periods of fasting when i was healthier.

What is a prayer you have been praying for a long time? For revival in central Pennsylvania.

Embracing the inevitability of change is an integral component of successful ministry. as we begin our 24th year at Glad Tidings, Lynn and i continue to draw strength and inspiration from isaiah 43.

16 This is what the LORD says—he who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters,

17 who drew out the chariots and horses, the army and reinforcements together, and they lay there, never to rise again, extinguished, snuffed out like a wick: 18 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. 19 See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

isaiah 43:16-19

in God’s immutability we find security and stability. We trust Him because He will not change. But what happens when God does a new thing in our lives?

Look at the irony. God says, in order to save My people from their enemies, i created a dry path through the Red Sea. Now, in order to save My people from spiritual thirst, i am going to do the exact opposite. i am going to create a stream in the desert. at first this might seem like two extremes, but the key to this verse is the figurative use of the word “forget.” When God says “forget,” He is really saying “what i am about to do is so great, important and impressive that what i have done in the past pales in comparison.”

Therefore, we must embrace change. if we persist in holding too tightly to the greatness of what God did in the past, we will miss the greatness of what He will do in the future. if we don’t look for God’s hand in change, we are prone to respect too much the way we are currently doing things. if we reject a change that God initiates for the sake of tradition, who are we really worshiping?

WaYS TO EMBRacE cHaNGEValue the PastThe God who brought israel out of Egypt never wanted them to dwell in that past but to look to Him as the God who could do anything. Remembering the past reminds us of His presence and His power. The past forms our values. We must under-stand those values to move ahead. Looking back we learn who we are, and then we can move ahead with integrity. We are not ready for change if we don’t even notice what we are doing now. Many of us may look at the past as the “good old days” or a “golden age,” but that’s not really true. There were things that worked and things that didn’t. There were people who worked and people who didn’t. There was good timing and bad timing.

Value the FutureThe reality is no one can live in the past and succeed. Technology and life move on and the world continues to grow and change. God will teach us things we need to know to reach the world as it is now, not as it

was back then. Remember what God said to Peter when he was encouraging him to embrace change for the sake of kingdom expansion? acts 10:15 “The voice spoke to him a second time, “Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.” Looking back at the Red Sea would not change their situation in exile, except to give them faith that God would come through in a way equal to their current challenges.

Think and lead Creativelyin Moses’ day, God inspired laws; in David’s day, songs; in asa’s day, prophets. God is creative and He wants us to be like Him.

as i spend time in God’s Word daily, i can’t help but be reminded that every page in the Bible represents all different kinds of creativ-ity in innumerable situations. How can we be Pentecostal and not believe God has wired every leader with incredible creativity? i know sometimes i become overwhelmed thinking that we’ve tried it all. But i know we haven’t. Do we really believe God can do anything? Let’s keep believing!

be Generous about ideasit is important that we share ideas with each other and that we really listen to one another. if we are quick to criticize or to assume we understand, then we are not really listening. it may sound like something we’ve tried before, but it may not be. Better listening leads to better ideas.

listen to Godabove all, listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit as He speaks through different means. While reading the Word, praying and interacting with others, you may be struck with an idea of how people will be reached with the gospel. as these ideas surface, some will come to fruition and some will be abandoned.

No matter what God’s plan for change is in our lives and in the life of our churches, we need to embrace Him.

Youth ALIVE ///As a youth pastor, I recognized that in order to be effective I had to be engaged in the campus. By default, students spend exponentially more time in school than in church. the school is where they first make decisions apart from their parents, and decide who their friends and influencers will be. It is impossible to make disciples while ignoring this overwhelmingly large stage of their lives.

the importance of the campus is compounded by the dynamic evangelistic opportunities that students face everyday. So our entire youth ministry philosophy had Campus Missions as one of it’s core foundations. We signed up students as campus missionaries, encouraged them to start Bible Clubs in their schools, and pushed them to become missional through events like See You At the Pole. through students, our youth ministry had a presence in eight schools. Five of those schools had functioning Bible Clubs, and our students served in leadership of each one.

My wife, Kiki, and I are excited to pursue this passion for the campus on a broader scale through Youth Alive. She is a sixth grade science teacher at Wilson Middle School in the Carlisle Area School District, holds a masters degree from Penn State, and is the teacher-sponsor of a Bible Club in her school. We are entirely invested in the campus! We look forward to working with leaders, students, and the local church to expand the Kingdom of God into the schools of the PennDel Ministry Network.
