Currently there are 16 people who have contacted theEvent Committee regarding their attendance atHAMSTER DANCE. No registrations have beenreceived yet but these 16 people are positively buildingto attend.

An additional 10 people have contacted us but theirinquiries sort of classify them as wannabes’. It is highlyunlikely they will show up. And we can’t even guess atthose who will just register at the last minute.

All equipment for the launch is ready and Registrationsare open at this time. Remeber no Registartions on siteand noT-Shirts will be sold on site.

HughesNet Satilite Internet Service is up and running inGerlach. Originally a Ken Biba project to get Skeekyher own internet service, after two years in the works, itis now running. Hopes of good internet service in themotel rooms is dashed though.

Gary Rosenfield, of AeroTech, has supplied the systemwith a WiFi box but service is only available in Bruno’sBar and restaurant - and Skeeky’s house!

The CAT5 system in the motel is still under question.Visitors must rely on the crappy Burning Man system orthe BLM WiFi. But maybe we can get the HughsNet.Time will tell!

WHAT A DIFFERENCE60 YEARS MAKES

While doing research for Gerlach News stuff, I cameacross an archive for an old desert magazine. It listsseveral articles published back in the 40's & 50's.Several were of the Black Rock area. One in particularwas a record of a husband and wife pair of desertgroupies. Written in 1951 I became very entranced as Iread it. They recorded their trek from Gerlach back toGerlach over pure dirt roads except for the main road inGerlach and the paved road in California on their returnback to Gerlach.

Their trip was the exact trek members of TripoliGerlach did in 2010 North past the Petrified Forest,West on Lost Creek Road through Hell's Gate, thenSouth at Duck Lake on 447 (the cattle drive) back toGerlach. We did the 150+ mile trek, mostly on dirt road,in several hours. It took them two days, and they had noair conditioning.

Their tale began after getting gas and water at the onlygas station forever in the “quaint” little town ofGerlach. Bruno had to be around 27 at the time andprobably just another person trying to survive. Weknow he didn’t own the gas station nor the store, and hisCountry Club was a dirt lot! Grabbing somesandwiches and supplies at the “store” in Gerlach theyheaded north commenting about the vast dry lake bedon their right that went on forever and ever. Intriguedthey actually took time to drive out on the perfectly flatdry lake to see what it was like before heading back tothe dirt road.

Their first stop (for a sandwich already) was at whatthey thought was a mining site oven because of itsconical shape; they saw smoke. They trekked their waythrough the marsh lands to find what was then known asthe Gerlach-Leadville Fountain. Beautiful colors ofyellow, green, maroon and black were lost on their

& white film.

W h a t t h e yd i s c o v e r e dwas not FlyGeyser, ratherwhat is calledO l d M a nGeyser. FlyGeyser did notexist in 1951.O l d M a nGeyser, or theG e r l a c h -Leadville Fountain was created in 1919 under similarcircumstances as Fly Geyser by a cattleman drilling forcold water and finding hot water. Fly Geyser wascreated in 1964 by someone drilling for hot water andfinding warm. Both wells were capped and abandonedand eventually formed the geysers.

Old Man Geyser stands in the meadow north of FlyGeyser. In 1956 someone shot at it and it stoppedflowing. It has since begun to trickle from the very toponce again, but is now dwarfed by the more spectacularFly Geyser.

Getting back on theroad heading norththey searched for anabandoned miningt o w n c a l l e dLeadville. This wasone of our desti-nations abandonedbecause we weretold there is nothingthere. They weretold the same thingbut what they foundwas a small ghosttown.

Several buildingremained and the ground was covered with abandonedsigns of early mining life. Maybe we should reconsidergoing to Leadville on one of our next explorations. after60 years something might still be there. Even just to seethe cliffs shown in the photo would prove worthwhile

Again back on the unpaved road north they soon cameacross our Petrified Forest on the left. According tothem large stone logs lay everywhere and rock stumpsjutted upward. Ideal specimens lay free for the grabbing

and they hadt r o u b l ed e c i d i n gwhich weret h e b e s tkeepers.

T o d a y i tpresents slimpickings butstill we enjoyvisiting there.

T h e i r t r i pagain drovenorth to Lost

Creek Road. This is the T where we turned Westheading for California. They say their drive wasuneventful save for the occasional rock formations. Then they came across a green oasis with cotton woodand aspen trees and some wild rose bushes. A babblingbrook worked its way through the small forest refugewhere they stopped to eat and refill their water cansfrom the clear cold creek.

This was Devil’s Gate but apparently not called that in1951. They did mention two high shear rock cliffs thatstraddled both sides of the road. - Cliffs? More like twogiant rocks to us!

After dinner they moved westward again figuring theyonly had a bout 20 miles till they hit the paved road. Butabout half way there they spotted a bed of agate andjasper off to the one side of the road. The ground wasstrewn with sharp and jagged pieces of rock and theysoon figured out this must have been an old Indian worksite. Arrow and spear heads could be found siftingthrough all of the rock chippings.

When Chuck Duffy, desert authority and big game

hunter in Gerlach, informed us about possibly findingIndian arrowheads up near Duck Lake he must havemeant this place. We took him literal for Duck Lakeitself, which we passed on the right, just before meetingthe cattle drive.

Our next venture out in this area should have usconsidering looking for Leadville and most important, the agate jasper Indian area they described.

Recognize these trees? They’re nowcaged with wire fence and welded poles.

This map traces their route, which we duplicatedseveral times now. Our stops are in blue. Maybe in 2011we can add the two red spots to our adventures. Whoknows what we’ll bring back.

BALLS PROJECTSDave Rose’s Pulp Friction was a 4-inch rocket built forBalls 17 to fly on a NASSA 3-inch X 36-inch M2000Slow propellant motor. The rocket used an aluminumboat tail/ motor retainer custom built by EricHaberman. At BALLS 17 the motor performedflawlessly, taking the rocket to 17,400 feet, but eventhough the main parachute never deployed and whileslowed by the drogue chute, the booster section crackedat the point of the forward centering ring contacted theairframe.

It did make an interesting landing as shown here.

The project was repaired and repainted in a new paintscheme with the conical nosecone being replaced with aPerformance Rocketry filament wound Von Karmannosecone, complete with aluminum tip.

The rocket was renamed RISING SUN with Davecreating some interesting vinyl graphics for it.

Dave’s original idea was to fly it at Balls 20 on a 98mmN3300 red propellant motor, but realized recently thatthe repair performed used a coupler, which prevents the42-inch motor casing from going completely into thebooster. Current plans, time permitting, will be to builda new booster the will allow the larger motor to fitproperly.

First version known as PULP FRICTIONSaw several successful flights.

Second version known as RISING SUNSaw several successful flights as well.

LET’S VISIT CHRIS PEARSONThis begins a series of articles visiting Tripoli Gerlach Members WorkShops. This is where they create the stuff wedream of. This first visit covers member Chris Pearson in Highland Height, Ohio, just a little East of Cleveland.

Chris stands in front of his Propellant Mixing area

The Main area is wall to wall storage and open work space Work table and complete Propellant area. Shell reloads are far right

Rocket storage. Can you guess his flying colors? All “dirty” work is done out in the garage on mobile equipment.

Chris Pearson has a long history of rocket activitydating back to the days before just about everyone weknow even thought of doing rockets.

Chris is the creator of LDRS, Tripoli’s National Launchand Members General Assembly. He is also past ownerof North Coast Rocketry, one of the first RocketCompanies addressing High Power Rocketry producinglarge rocket kits and composite motors to propel them.

Chris, a known clean fanatic, works out of his basementand garage keeping everything immaculate at all times. With plenty of room everything is kept organized inspecific areas and work does not cross over.

ROCKET SCIENCE

Sitting around the launch pad in Bruno’s we’ve allheard Mark and Robin’s humorous tales of horror anddisbelief of their stay, while driving up from Pheonix toGerlach, at the Clown Motel in Tonopah, Nevada. Wellthe place does exist as the photos show.

THE CLOWN MOTEL

Mark and Robin apparently are not the only one’screeped by this place. Several people have writtenquestionable reviews of their stay at the Clown Moteland their stories run the same as our guys.

In reality it is a normal Motel just over run with theClown motif! It’s amazing how many people are afraidof Clowns.

Tripoli Gerlach has added Vinyl Decals to our list ofmerchandise. Available in 4” and 6” versions they willgo great on rockes, cars and just about anything. Visitour WebSite to order .
