Empathy-Related Neuron in Anterior Cingulate Cortex and Insular Cortex of Rats
Purpose of the Study
1. To investigate whether empathy-related behaviors can be found in the rat.
2. To investigate whether empathy-related neurons can be found in the ACC and InC.
3. To explore if visual cue is important to empathy.
Material and Methods - I• Rat: Female Long-Evans • Body weight: 250-300g• Anesthesia: Pentobarbital 50 mg/ kg• Implant:16-channel stainless steel microwire electrodes in ACC• Recovery: 7 days• Habituation: 3 days, 30-60 min/ day • Testing chamber: two 27 cm x 21 cm x 17 cm perforated Plexiglas divider• Noxious thermal stimulation: infrared CO2 laser beam directed to the forepaw
• Multiple single unit recording: Plexon MNAP system and SortClient Program
• Video tracking system: CinePlex system
• Analysis: Nex Program and Offline Sorterdemonstrator observer

Conclusion
• Rats showed more freezing, sniffing and social investigation when observing another rat in pain.
• Empathy-related neurons could be found in the ACC and insular cortex of the rat.
