about our speakersDR. ADRIENNE CARTHON is a veteran natural hair stylist and educator, a Master Twistologist™.

She is an Assistant Professor of African American Literature and Women’s Studies at Morgan State University, and she conducts academic and practical seminars on the Black female body and images of beauty. She also conducts training on natural hair care and styling, specializing in therapeutic styling for baldness and other problem issues. PHYLLIS ALLEN is co-owner of PhilRich International Locks & Hair Extension in Orlando FL. PhilRich is a natural hair salon and it is also known as the one stop natural hair studio. BRITTANY OSBOURNE is a McKnight doctoral fellow PhD student studying medical anthropology and digital arts and science at the University of Florida. She’s taught English Composition and Creative Writing to college undergraduates while earning her MFA in Creative Writing. She’s served as a volunteer creative writing instructor to underprivileged black youth, and worked as a university writing and honors thesis consultant, and independent consultant for professional students and local non-profit organizers. Her studies in fiction and anthropology led her to study abroad for modern fiction at Cambridge University, as well as cultural and environmental anthropology in Ghana. She’s presented on her literary work at the University of Lisbon in Portugal, pedagogical work at the Association for Writers and Writing Programs in Colorado, and body image erasure of minority youth in young adult fiction and adaptive film at the International Conference of Body Image in New York, hosted by CUNY and the American Psychiatric Association.
