Fastforwardtopresentdayandthenew-lookRiverHawkshavebeenpickedtofin-ishseventhagainthisyearinwhatfigurestobeatop-heavyconference.UMassLowellreceived146overallvotes,justfiveshyofsixth-placeStonehill. “Ourgoal,asalways,istodowellintheconference,qualifyfortheNCAA’sandtobecomeabetterteam,”McNultystated.

Theshiftawayfromtheaerialattackofthelastfewseasonscomesoutofnecessity.TheRiverHawkswavedgoodbyetothreeseniors:Coscia,HadderandVickyWong.Astheyleftthecourt,sodid805ofUMassLowell’s1174kills(68.6%). “Welostalotoffirepower,”saidMcNulty.“Idon’tknowifwecanmakeup800kills,butwecanbestrongerdefensively.We’llgetmorepointsoffofblocking,diggingandservice.Inparticular,passingandservingaregoingtobehugeandIthinkwe’realreadybetterinthoseareasthanayearago.” AmongthosereturningtoUMassLowell’soffenseisseniorLeaFreeman(Methuen,Mass.).SherankedthirdontheRiverHawkslastseasoninkillswith184,averaging1.80pergame.Freemanalsotallied138digsand65blocks,makingheraversatileweapononthecourt. ExpectedtoplayamoreprominentroleintheoffenseisfellowseniorTrinaCarroll(Hampton,N.H.).Themiddle-hittertotaled52killsand35blockslastyear,bothcareer-highs. “Withtwoseniors,naturallythereisseniorleadership,”McNultysaid.“PlayingalongsideCosciaandHadderformostoftheircareers,theyhaven’thadtobethebestplayersonthecourt,butthey’vebeenstartersandthey’reworkingintothatrolewheretheyhaveagreaterimpact.” UMassLowellwillthriveonitsdepth,utilizingaversatilecastofathletestofillintheremainingholesonoffense.Agreatdealofpreseasonwasspentidentifyingwhatskillsherplayersbringtothetableandhowbesttousethem. “Everyonecanhavearoleonthisteam,ev-eryonecancontribute--notjustonthecourt,butoffofit,”saidMcNulty.“Ofcourseeveryonewantstostartandplayallofthetime,butiftheplayerscanacceptthatteammentality,we’llbebetterforit.” Thedepthcomesfromsixnewplayersjoin-ingthesquadfor2011,comprisedoffourfresh-menandtwosophomores.MixingthoseplayerswiththeveteranswillallowtheRiverHawkslineupflexibility,specificallyattheoutsidehitterposition. “Ithinkwhat’sniceaboutthisgroupisthatwehavefouroutsidehitters,”saidMcNulty.“Allofthembringsomethingdifferenttothetable.”

Wiltjertookoverthefull-timesettingdutiesin2010,dishingout875assistsat8.50pergame,eighthbestintheNE-10.Shealsorankedfirstontheteaminserviceaces(38),secondindigs(253)andfifthinkills(77).Wiltjerrecorded12double-doubles(assists-digs). Assumingtheroleofliberoinherfirstcollegiatematch,Eddysetwhatremainsacareer-highof32digsagainstMerrimackonSept.4,2010.Followingherdebutshecontinuedtoshine,collecting437digsenroutetoanAll-Rookieselection.Eddyreacheddouble-digitdigsinallbutfiveofUMassLowell’smatches. TwoareasinwhichtheRiverHawksappearpoisedforevengreatersuccessin2011areserviceandblocking. DespitelosingjustoverhalfoftheirserviceacesfromtheNE-10’sseventhbestserv-ingteamin2010,UMassLowelllookscapableofeclipsinglastyear’stotalof196.Wiltjerreturnsaftertyingfortheteam-leadwith38acesandFreemanlanded21asajunior,despiterecordingzeroasasophomore. ThetwoplayersmostlikelytosetnewcareermarksareEddyandPeterson.Eddyloggedmajorminutesasarookieandtallied14acesdespitebeingthrustintohighpres-suresituations.Hercounter-part,Peterson,flourishedinlimitedplayingtimeforatotalof15aces,mostamongUMassLowellfreshmen.Likelytoassumealargerroleontheteam,Petersonwillreceivemorechancestoshowcasehertalentsintheservicegame. Thelong-tenuredRiverHawkcoachhasaveraged18winsaseasonduringhercareerandseemspoisedtoreachthemilestoneearlyinthecampaign. “IfIgetto350andwehavealosingseason,itdoesn’tmeananything,”admittedMcNulty.“Butifwe’redoingwellitbecomesaprettyspecialmoment.”

A1995graduateofUMassLowell,TaraConnersentersherfourthyearontheUMLstaff. Connersservedastheheadcoachat
EndicottCollegeforfiveyearsandhascoachedwithintheMassachu-settsJuniorOlympicprogramaswellasseveralareacampsandclinics. WhileatEndicott,ConnersledtheGullstotheirbestrecordinschoolhistory(21-4). AtUMassLowell,Connerswasatwo-yearcaptainandplayedanumberofpositions.Previously,shewasatwo-timeconferenceall-staratBillericaH.S. ConnersisanofficerontheBillericaPoliceforce,whereshecur-rentlyresides.
John Cody re-turnsforhis14thseasonwith theUMass Lowel lvol leybal l pro-gram, his 36thyearincoaching.
Cody spent 25yearsasthedirectoroftheMerrimackValleyJuniorOlympicVolleyballPro-gram,aninstructionalleaguewhichcompetesagainstotherclubteamsinNewEngland.Healsoservedasthe head coach atStonehamH.S.in1987-88andatHolyCross from1989-96.

ConferenceCoachoftheYear,McNultyinheritedthevolleyballprogramin1994followingatwo-yearheadcoachingstintatNortheastern.Afterpostinga29-39recordinherfirsttwoseasonswiththeRiverHawks,shehasguidedUMLtoa271-188clip(.590),includingeight20-winseasonsandtheprogram’sfirstsixNCAATournamentappearances(2000,2002-05,2009). Aculminationofallherwork,theRiverHawkscapturedtheprogram’sfirsteverNE-10TournamentChampionshipin2009.Inadditiontopostinga22-10record,McNultywas crownedas the conference’sCoachoftheYearwhiletakingtheprogramtoitssixthNCAATournament. McNulty also led theRiverHawks to secondplaceintheNE-10regularseasoninfourofthelastnineyears.The2003seasonwasespeciallysweetforMcNultyandtheRiverHawks,whohadgraduated70percentofitsoffenseanddefensewiththe2002squad(25-11),butposteda20-10recordandearnedtheirthirdNCAATournamentberthinfouryears. AtNortheastern,McNultyposteda29-29two-year clipwhich includeda16-10showing in1992.Thatyear,theHuskiesadvancedtotheNorthAtlanticConference(nowAmericaEast)Tournament. Afour-yearplayeratBostonCollege(Classof‘85),McNultyservedasteamcaptainasaseniorandwastherecipientoftheBCVarsityClubOutstandingSeniorAward.Upongraduation,McNultyservedasheadcoachofthegirls’teamatheralmamater,Bil-lericaHighSchool,wheresheledtheIndianstotheDivisionINorthSectionalfinalsandMerrimackValleyConference title twice.
